Q. How has ballroom dancing benefited your health?
Dancing is my salvation. Since I've started ballroom dance, I’ve lost weight and I feel better. I've been diabetic for about 4-5 years. I've tried many medications to help lower my sugar, but each dosage would slow me down. However, the physical activity of dancing four to eight hours a week for the past two and a half years, has lowered my diabetic sugar counts significantly. Just recently, my doctor has reduced my medication dosage because dance has brought down my levels naturally. By January, the doctor has considered taking me off my medication altogether!
Q. Have you had to make any changes to your lifestyle with ballroom dance? Of course, with any exercise, I've had to be careful with what I eat and my daily lifestyle. Nonetheless, I've never had to tell myself I'm "dieting," something I've never been able to truly commit myself to. When I know I have dance every week, it motivates me to eat properly and provide myself with the energy to fully gain the benefit of my two hour dance lessons a few times a week.
Q. How long have you been ballroom dancing?
I've been dancing ballet, jazz, and tap my whole life but dove into ballroom a little over two years ago.
Q. How did you get into ballroom? Prior to starting ballroom, I was working two jobs and not giving my health the time it needed. I was overworked and overstressed. One day, I noticed Jonathan dancing in a studio, when he pulled me onto the dance floor. I could feel my stresses leaving my body one by one. Each day dancing with him has been a wonderful experience, I've never looked back.
Q. How has this journey been for you physically, emotionally and mentally?
This experience has been life changing. Health wise, I feel more active and energetic. Emotionally, I feel younger, and I can do more when I play with my young grandkids. After a long time, I've felt so at peace. Many times, I will have had a rough week and my only focus is getting into the studio to dance. Dance With Me has been amazing in understanding this process.
Q. You recently competed at the Embassy Ball, tell us about your experience.
Oh! It was... enlightening. I've participated in other competitions and done exceptionally well, winning first place in 15 heats. The Embassy Ball definitely had its fair share of experienced and competitive dancers, which was a new experience for me. Overall, I'm so happy I did get to participate in it.
Q. Is there anything you would like to say about your overall journey of ballroom dancing in general?
Thank you to LA Ballroom Dance Studio for being so friendly and welcoming! Each moment in the studio is spectacularly beautiful!
