Life is A LOT easier if you have good gears that work together perfectly.

Owning an Insta360 cameras is a good start, next you just need to pair it with SD cards that made to be their destined mates.

Insta360 camera product lines are one of the best 360 cameras available in the market right now. Powerful cameras need powerful memory cards, but which one do you need? Let’s find the answer here!

They are so popular that people use these tiny 360 cameras in many occasions. Be it a cycling, running, surfing, skiing, snowboarding, you name it! One of the best video recorded by these Insta360 cameras is this AWESOME tiny planet angle.

Source: Youtube

Insta360 cameras let you record video in high definition, store them in tiny micro SD card in the unit. In this article, I will cover all technical details you need (or just want) to know about it step by step. Then, I will sum up all information and tell you which SD cards are the best to use with each of Insta360 camera model. Or, if you are in a hurry, here is the final verdict of this guide.

Data Rates

Data rates are a specification that tell you how fast can you transfer data from any electronic device to the other one. Technically, there are two units that are used widely in the IT world.

Mb/s (Lowercase B — Mega Bits Per Second)

Bits is mostly used when measuring in the factory, and displayed as product spec. It is mostly seen on WiFi and storage devices.

MB/s (Uppercase B — Mega Bytes Per Second)

Bytes is used in storage capacity and many OS interfaces. You might be familiar with this while copying files on Windows or Mac.

8Mb/s = 1 MB/s

These two units are not the same, and confusing a lot of people. However, in fact they are correlated. This is what you need to know before buying any MicroSD cards. I won’t go any more deep into this topic, since it takes a whole semester in computer science major just to learn only half of it. If you want to learn more, you can read further on Wikipedia.

OK, Let’s continue here. Since the majority of people are more familiar with MB/s. So, in this guide, I will use only MB/s as the unit here. If you have read on the product box or manufacturer website, and found that the spec is not even close to what is shown here, check the unit first.

SD Speed Classes & Data Rates

Speed class is a universal standard that divide all the SD cards in the market into each group by speed.

Data rate is basically how much data the camera needs to write to it’s internal memory card in one second. Technical unit of this rate is mb/s (Mega Bits Per Second), which is different to what we are used to: MB/s (Mega Bytes Per Second). I will cover about this different in the latter section.

According to Insta360.com, you basically needs a V30 class or above to use with any of the Insta360 camera models.

Source: sdcard.org

From the table, we can imply that Insta360 needs either a V30, U3, or anything that is 30MB/s and faster. This is crucial for choosing SD cards to use with Insta360 cameras.

You will facing countless problems if you are going for lower than recommended spec. Nobody doesn’t want that to happen, especially when you NEED to use it, so let’s buy the right ones from the beginning!

Official Insta 360 compatible micro SD memory Cards

The official manufacturer recommended micro SD cards are these Sandisk Extreme PRO.

Unfortunately, Insta360 only recommend Sandisk Extreme PRO, and Sandisk only make micro SD cards up to 128GB. If you need larger ones, you need to use other brands instead.

These are also considering OVERKILL because Insta360 only recommends these powerful cards to use with ALL of Insta360 cameras. To be honest, you don’t NEED to use 100 MB/s cards, but rather the ones that has enough speed for your camera model.

You may ask, so why Insta360 recommends these SD cards? To be honest, I don’t know why. But if I have to guess, it’s high probability that many new tech companies that has limited resource and they tend to put most of their resource into R&D and marketing. Compatibility testing and supporting are something cost a lot of time and therefore not high priority to do. So, many company ended up just recommend something 2x-3x higher than needed specs to just play safe. That’s just a guess.

Depends on your preferences, if you are:
  • Normal user who looking on the final answer: Don’t read further, the above 3 are the ONLY officially manufacturer recommended, and best to be used in any cases.
  • Tech Guy who knows about specs and willing to go out of any borders: Keep reading! There are more to go!
Insta360 Cameras Data Rates

OK, for tech guy or normal people who want to know more deep, let’s start with the data rates for each of Insta360 cameras here.

Model Max Resolution Max Data Rates Max Card Size
Insta360 ONE 4k (3840 x 1920) at 30fps 8.125 MB/s 128GB
Insta360 Air 2560 x 1280 at 30 fps 1.05 MB/s 128GB
Insta360 Nano 3040 x 1520 at 30 fps 2 MB/s 128GB
Insta360 Pro 8K (7680 x 3840) at 100fps 43.75 MB/s read below

Source: Insta360.com

Using the data from table above, one thing is that you don’t need a 100MB/s cards, even with the Pro only needs 43.75MB/s max. What you really need is memory cards that are just above the maximum data rates.

Again, it’s completely up to you. If you only want the officially recommended cards, stop reading further. There are only 3 cards recommended above.

Best Value Cards For All Insta360 Models (Except Pro)

Alternatively, you can still use memory cards from other brands that having the spec at least V30/U3/30MB/s. There are reports from many users on amazon that they can use other well-known brands without any problem at all.

It is completely up to you to use the official recommended or the alternative I provide.

You can check out each brand for more specific reviews.

Insta360 Pro

$3,499 — Available at Amazon.com

Insta360 Pro is considered the premium of 360 cameras. With it’s max resolution of 8K, it stays at the top of it’s competitors. The only down sides are you also need top quality desktop with software that can handle 8K videos, and they are all costly! Used only by pros who need top quality footage for his high end broadcasts. If you are not pros, it is strongly recommended to go for Insta360 ONE ($299) which is significantly more affordable instead.

This one expensive camera records H.264 videos at 43.75MB/s (350mb/s). With Insta’s minimum SD card speed (100MB/s), the data rate is more than enough with 2x extra breathing room.

With Insta360 Pro, you have 2 choices of Internal storage
  • MicroSD Card

However, when you connect both MicroSD card and a SSD drive together, the camera will choose to record video files into the SSD drive as default. Keep that in mind when you record!

Own a GoPro HERO 6 and looking to buy some micro SD cards for your new action camera? We have sum up all the important information and finally publish a list of best memory cards for GoPro HERO 6 here.

No surprise, the GoPro HERO 6 is basically one of the best action camera in the market where other competitors are no close while comparing the video quality.

Getting proper SD cards for your GoPro is something you shouldn’t look over.

Let’s get to the point, here are the best memory cards for GoPro HERO 6

If you need more in-depth details, or recommendations based on performance or budget, read further.

It’s All About Data Rates

All memory cards are not created equal. All the fancy names are created for marketing purposes, and I will tell you, nobody will be able to tell how different they are. On the other hand, specs are the only facts that tell us how each one performs. Geeks like us who love numbers are able to categorize them, and then there is how this guide came from.

We also believe that we should only choose SD cards from well-known brands with significantly less defection reports.

First Factor: Write Speed

Memory card write speed tells you how fast the camera writes data to the SD card. The more resolution, the more data needed to be written in one second. The more FPS (frame per second), the more data is written in one second.

GoPro HERO 6 maximum write speed is at 7.5MB/s, 9.75MB/s with Protune, according to GoPro.com.

Please note that Mbps (lowercase b) is Mega Bits Per Second. Many people confuse Bit and Byte, and we decide to use Mega Bytes Per Second in our write ups because it’s more familiar to most people.

You will only need memory cards that can handle the camera maximum write speed, and you are good to go. Having higher speed SD cards than the camera’s max data rate doesn’t mean that you will get higher quality videos. It just an extra resource that will never been used.

You don’t NEED to pay extra for faster cards that your camera can’t make use of it!

But, hell yeah, if you plan to use this memory card for other cameras as well, you can always buy the faster ones.
Second Factor: Read Speed

Memory card read speed tells you how fast the camera reads data from the SD card. It also affect how fast you transfer files from SD cards to your computer. However, this has nothing to do with mobile preview since the bottle neck is at Wi-Fi or Bluetooth anyway.

This feature is by far less important than write speed. You only need to have memory cards with enough read speed, and you will not have any problem at all.

Faster read speed will let you transfer files faster. It’s the optional quality of life.

These are the best performance SD cards for GoPro HERO 6.  All of these cards read and write speed are by far higher than the maximum data rate GoPro HERO 6 needs. That means you can also use these cards with other cameras with higher specs with no problem.
