When Michaelis Boyd were commissioned in to redesign The Marylebone Rooms at the stylish Marylebone Hotel, it was apparent from the start that lighting would play a key role in enhancing the space.  John Cullen Lighting were bought in to add both atmosphere and drama yet creating a flexible space for the numerous needs of the space.

Our Design Director Luke Thomas says “The brief was to create a discreet lighting solution to improve the experience of the hotel’s guests and enhance the glamorous and opulent interiors. We provided an end-to-end solution including design, supply of equipment and the lighting controls ensuring an easy one-stop service for the client.”

This was their first project with the hotel and the client had some detailed requirements for the colour and warmth of the light. The only way to guarantee success was to create practical demonstrations of the proposed lighting effect using various colour options for comment and sign off. The dramatically narrow 10° beam angle of the Polespring 50 was ideal for spotlighting onto the tables to create a sense of intimacy – an important factor for the client. Warm 2400K Contour HD24 LED strip in frosted extrusions was used to create soft lighting effects in the various wood finishes, to backlight the shelving unit and to give a sparkle to fluted glass details in a modern art deco style.

A John Cullen supplied Lutron Homeworks QS system gives the flexibility to switch between daytime scenes, which provide practical light for meetings and cleaning/maintenance, to low level late night scenes for when the space is transformed into an exclusive cocktail lounge. All the controls were commissioned by their in-house team as a collaboration between technical engineers and designers to achieve the perfect effect.

The end result was a newly designed meeting space a million miles away from the soulless, corporate rooms all too often found in urban hotels.

We are thrilled to share an exclusive preview of ‘Be, Well’ – an über unique construction designed for this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week.

The ‘Be, Well’ Pavilion sponsored by Haines Watts in partnership with architects WR-AP and supported by John Cullen Lighting, Joseph Ash Galvanising, Berry Systems, Lionweld Kennedy, and the Galvanizers Association, invites you to pause, reflect and share your thoughts in their well of reflection.

‘Be, Well’ is an investigation into the design potential of the long lifespan material that is galvanised steel – steel covered in zinc, extremely resistant to wear and tarnishing. Galvanised steel is usually used in either a unitarian or industrial manner can be showcased with finesse and elegant detailing to promote its innate aesthetic properties.

In an age where sustainability is on the agenda of all design disciplines, the pavilion looks to showcase the whole life longevity and potential beauty embodied in the galvanising process. The pavilion will take visitors on a journey from utilitarian building products through to bespoke architectural elements, all showcasing the detailed beauty of galvanising.

Our team of lighting designers led by Design Director Luke Thomas, created this contemporary lighting scheme, aiming to enhance the unique material used in this project and enhance its various forms. Floor grating was used as a wall panel  arranged in a grid format.  Lucca External will skim light over the panels creating a definition between light and shadow. The perforated galvanised steel panels will also be backlit with  our colour-changing LED contour strips.

The ‘Be, Well’ Pavilion will take you on a journey, beginning in a space surrounded by a fine filigree of elements that shine and refract, progressing to an enclosed construction where you connect with the materials and see them transform. Finally, you will move through to a portico inspired by the adjacent St. John’s Gate, housing a new Clerkenwell ‘Well’.

Visit us at Clerkenwell Design Week in St John’s Square between 21st and 23rd May.

Inspired by the Duchess of Cambridge, children’s play areas, natural habitats and the feel good benefits of gardening are leading themes jostling for attention at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. We are proud to yet again have partnered with the Wallgarden to illuminate their project based on the Main Avenue amongst the most luxurious gardens at the show.

Forget dollhouses, the Wallgarden, in partnership with R Moulding, have constructed a bespoke mini cottage scaled down to child sizes, making it a perfect playhouse.

Along with the cottage, Wallgarden partnered with the jeweller’s Pragnell to copy a facade of their signature shopfront.

The shop will be equipped Pragnell’s luxurious jewellery and lit with our Polespring 40 downlights and Contour LEDs washing over their signature Sanderson wallpaper.

To complete the look, distinguished landscape designer Sarah Eberle joined the project to create a wild flower meadow featuring a combination of our Carella candle lights, Kew spotlights and Hampton flood lights.

When it comes to choosing art for interiors, too often artwork is treated as an afterthought. When chosen thoughtfully, art has the ability to transform a space and infuse it with personality.

As our showroom turned into a modern art exhibition for the next two weeks, we invite you to visit and see the stunning work curated by Interior Designer Maurizio Pellizzoni.

Our exclusive display, courtesy of Maddox Gallery, features stunning contemporary artists such as Mr Brainwash, Kfir Moyal, Mila Alexander, Mike Dargas, The Connor Brothers and Michael Moebius. Visit us and experience modern art within a luxurious setting. Our skilled team of lighting designers will be there to advise you on the best art lighting techniques for your existing and future pieces. Whilst in the showroom, do not forget to ask our staff about an exclusive consultation session with Maddox Gallery.

On top of the art to make our customers experience the comfort of contemporary furniture, Poliform UK provided us with pieces from their best selling collection.

The Mad Joker – an armchair with a tall, enveloping backrest, which conveys a comfortable, reassuring sensation – is a real conversation starter. Accompanied by two Stanford armchairs, Baba, Soori and Mad Round Coffee Tables create the most stunning sitting area, looking just perfect in our light library.

The room set-up would not be complete without decorative lighting pieces, which were the courtesy of Italian lighting designers Luci Italiance, Evi Style and Morosini Lighting.

As this is a temporary display, we encourage you to visit our showroom during the next two weeks. Share your thoughts with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and don’t forget to tag @johncullenlighting, @mrpellizzoni and @maddoxgallery.
