Most travellers who visit Africa are drawn to the abundant wildlife and great weather. As a leading safari destination, you can find everything from romantic retreats, malaria-free family lodges, the Big Five and another intriguing feature that attracts visitors – a gourmet food quest. One of South Africa’s best safari secrets is the mouth-watering cuisine prepared by some of the top chefs in the world and one of our most favourite gourmet safari destinations has to be – Royal Malewane.

Enjoy a lazy afternoon on your private deck with fragrant coffee or a signature cocktail. Or make your way down to the boma for a candle-lit feast served up under the night sky. The culinary adventure that awaits at the Royal Malewane that will be equally as memorable as your game-drive or walking safari.

Here’s a sneak peek of what your average day will look like:

If you’re looking for a splendid English breakfast to accompany the exquisite bush setting, the smell of hot muffins, freshly-baked scones served with raw honey will awaken your every sense. Served next to a crackling fire, tantalise your taste-buds while coffee brews and take in the vast expanse around you.

After your game drive, waiting for you back at the lodge is a gourmet lunch prepared in their very own kosher kitchen. Feel every bit on vacation as you indulge under the Jackalberry trees on the wooden deck.

And if you aren’t ready to head inside yet, dinner is served outside in a traditional boma bush setting. The magic belongs to Chef John Jackson’s who will prepare sweet Mozambique crab and Karoo lamb, or tender venison fillet cooked with homemade berry preserves.

And if you think all the fuss is in the dining setting, Royal Malewane holds the sought-after Chaîne des Rôtisseurs award in its trophy case.

But your taste-buds have one more surprise for the day! As you head back to your suite to clock out, you’ll find a single exotic fruit and a handwritten note and poem on your pillow to send you off into safari slumber. From the large jugs of freshly blended chilled papino, mango or strawberry juice you wake up to the sweet taste you’re left with before retiring, you will surely succumb to the seductions of Royal Malewane’s delicacies.

John Jackson is a name behind some of South Africa’s most sought after restaurants, and after 20 years of delivering a royal culinary experience, his blends, pairings and technique show as much care and attention as does guides on game drives.

While your heart takes flight, the delicious food and warm hospitality will ground you, especially paired with the expertly chosen Royal Malewane house wines. Need we say more…

Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. – Chief Seattle

Singita’s accommodation collection is one of our absolute favourites and encompasses over a dozen properties scattered across four different countries – South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Rwanda, and all their properties are going green. With the purpose of travel ever-changing and travellers wanting to give back to communities and enjoy the luxuries of travel without the immense human-impact on land and environments – accommodations are helping them plan sustainable escapes to 5-star retreats without having to compromise on any amenities. Singita has found innovative ways to reduce their footprint by integrating green-practices from the kitchen to guest rooms that won’t harm the beautiful landscapes and wildlife you come to see. It’s the little things that count…

At Singita, they believe that sustainability is an ongoing journey of continuous awareness, improvement, and thoughtful, appropriate adaptation to the changing contexts in which we find ourselves. Reducing their overall use of plastic has been a key objective for the past few years.

We commend them for the incredible efforts they have made recently to be more environmentally friendly. Here are a few of the things they’ve done:

Singita Lodges and Camps

One of Singita’s greatest accomplishments is reducing plastic water bottles by 90% which has saved the equivalent of 127,000 1ℓ plastic bottles from the waste stream. Instead, guests are given reusable glass or stainless steel bottles filled with filtered water which they are encouraged to take with them as they continue on their travels or return home.

In addition, plastic straws have been completely eliminated from use, preventing these non-biodegradable items from finding their way to our landfills and oceans.

Their lodges and camps also provide soft drinks in their minibars in tin or glass and milk is provided in quaint old-school glass bottle.

Singita Sweni

At Singita Sweni Lodge they are experimenting with a bean-to-cup coffee machine that will eliminate coffee ‘pod’ waste. Where Nespresso pods are used, the used pods are sent back to Johannesburg for recycling. The long-term plan is to eventually move away from coffee pods entirely.

Singita Kitchens

For years, Singita has been trying to make their kitchens eco-friendly. They started paying attention to how much cling film their kitchens were using and found alternative ways to store and protect food. The takeaway containers used for our guests’ off-site picnic lunches have been redesigned as well as the dining room condiments. This process is an ongoing one as our chefs continuously engage with their suppliers to reduce plastic and Styrofoam packaging.

Packaging

Last year, the Style, Design & Procurement division implemented a sustainable and reusable crate system which eliminated the use of plastic bubble wrap. Items sent further afield are packed and sealed with gummed paper tape instead of the standard plastic tape.

The Spa

The spa range has shifted to Terres D’Afrique; a more sustainable, locally-produced brand which avoids plastic and uses glass and aluminium packaging for its products.

The Room

The in-suite amenities are from another local range called Malee which uses refillable metal or glass containers for shampoo, conditioner, body wash and moisturiser. Even the complimentary toothbrush is made from bamboo, the cotton buds are fully biodegradable and other small items are plastic free and, where applicable, stored in a corn-starch rather than plastic wrapper. Clean laundry is returned to guests wrapped in paper or in a reusable box, and the in-suite bin liners are brown paper bags.

These simple alternatives to using environmentally-damaging single-use materials play an important role in reducing humans negative impact on the Earth and form part of global efforts to end plastic pollution.
At Singita, it is their goal for everything to circulate back into the ecosystem, the same way that it does in nature. Whether it is at Boulders Lodge, Faru Faru, the new Kwitonda Lodge or any other, enjoy guilt-free time in Africa without compromising on the lush interiors, exquisite spa treatments or room amenities.

If you’ve been dreaming of a bespoke family safari but are worried about malaria – we’ve got just the thing for you here.

Make time for new memories, adventures and excitement while disconnecting from the world and succumb to Africa’s beauty. Let its magic engulf you while maintaining an indulgent level of sumptuous luxury as well as peace of mind that it’s safe for the whole family.

We recommend the below two luxury malaria-free getaways at some of the world’s most widely recognised premier safari destinations – Madikwe and Marataba.

Madikwe and Marataba are completely safe for young children. Both areas are malaria-free safari regions and by far the premier luxury safari camps for families with exceptional children’s programmes amidst gorgeous wilderness and opulent accommodation. Specially equipped and staffed to delight the modern family with adventure and fun in complete safety and extravagance.

Madikwe is a 50 minute charter flight or 4-5 hour drive from Johannesburg and lies on the edge of the Kalahari and Botswana borders. Madikwe Safari Lodge, Madikwe Hills and Jamala Madikwe are such lodges who have become synonymous with luxury and attention to detail.

Incredible Game Viewing

Madikwe Private Game Reserve has become world famous for its Lion and (highly endangered) African Wild Dog viewing. What’s more because Madikwe’s terrain is a unique mix of savannah and semi-arid desert the diverse safari experience allows visitors the chance to view the ever-renowned Big 5 as well as a number of rare desert adapted species.

In the more recent years the Leopard viewing has improved tremendously at Madikwe. Due to the semi-arid nature of the terrain, the visibility in the reserve is good and the quality of game viewing is further ensured as the game rangers are able to drive the safari 4×4 vehicles off road for closer viewing.

A trip to Madikwe is perfectly complimented by a couple days in Cape Town or even some down time on a tropical beach in northern Mozambique!

Marataba Safari Lodge is perfect for a quick escape to the bush and more importantly, malaria-free. Enjoy private, luxury accommodation with absolutely delightful and warm staff. Marataba Safari Lodge is a mere four hours North-West of Johannesburg. Resting at the sleepy foothills of the magnificent Waterberg mountain range, you will find an absolutely magical retreat. Combining luxury, adventure, and the best of Africa’s delights, Marataba Safari Lodge truly has it all.

An idyllic location

Set against the backdrop of the spectacular Waterberg Mountains, Marataba Safari Lodge is the ideal location for an intimate escape with your loved ones. Marataba will no doubt go above and beyond any of your wildest dreams. The staff at Marataba take the utmost care to make sure that your escape is as intimate as can be – from the surprise lantern-lit boma dinners, and the hot bubble baths, to the complimentary massages and the sunset boat cruises! A sense of calm and quiet overcomes you while you soak in the picturesque surroundings. Feel your soul filling with peace and joy while you admire the sights and sounds of the surrounding landscape and its exquisite wildlife. Breathe in the fresh air, and marvel at the gorgeous, glowing African sunsets…

Delightfully African

Marataba Safari Lodge appeals to the African adventurer that lies in all of us. The captivating pink-orange sunsets; the lush, green bushveld; and the abundant game all make for an exciting African escapade. What could be more thrilling than spotting a leopard hunting at dusk, or lions feeding on a kudu? Watch the elephants drinking peacefully at the waterhole and the hippos lazing about in the cool waters. And, we have good news for bird-lovers—Marataba is an absolute bird-lover’s paradise! It is abundant with yellow-billed hornbills, grey go-away birds, and crimson-breasted shrikes. It’s always a treat to see the striking woodland kingfisher as well as the colourful malachite kingfisher, and the whydah birds are particularly mesmerising to watch with their spectacularly long, dancing tails. To name only a few species of the many that awaits you.

After a fun-filled day of game drives and walks, you can relax by the poolside with your family and admire the gorgeous surroundings!

As a wine enthusiast himself, our director, John Holley recently visited South Africa’s most visited wine valley – Franschhoek. He and his family spent time at Leeu Estate, Waterford Estate, Delaire Graff and many other heavenly spots.

After a delightful few days spent in this quaint village John has shared some of his exquisite pictures with us and penned some highlights and tips for you below. Make sure you make note of these for your next trip to Franschhoek!

Travel Tips:

  • La Cotte Farm

La Cotte Farm is uniquely situated a stone’s throw from the charming village of Franschhoek. “Both the farmhouse and little cottages are fantastic options and an easy stroll to town.”

  • Leeu Estate

“Leeu Estates is a phenomenal experience! It boasts one of the best gardens and has incredible statues on display. I love that they are pushing South African art.”

Start your day with a tasting on the estate and then stroll into the gardens and enjoy a relaxed afternoon picnic. It’s a sensational experience! The Leeu Estates picnic is a must if you have time in Franschhoek and must be booked 48 hours in advance.”

“The estate is really exceptional and your stay will be magical.”

  • Delaire Graff

Delaire Graff Cellar has been making world-class wines since 2008. The flagship Cabernet Franc is the estate’s bestseller and a must-taste. Delaire Restaurant has a world-class team of gifted chefs and sommeliers to take you on a culinary joyride. Savour the food as each plate is served with the utmost care and teeming with fresh ingredients, picked daily from the farms very own vegetable garden.

“This winery really does boast the best views of the Franschhoek valley and will no doubt leave you wishing you could stay longer!”

  • Safari Waterford Estate

Taste a bottle of Kevin Arnold Shiraz, planted on the rockiest sandstone slopes of Waterford Estate. This complex array of red and dark fruit flavours pairs well with lean red meats. Or book a wine drive safari, which takes you through the 120-hectare Estate on the beautiful slopes of the Helderberg Mountain by a safari-type vehicle. This unique 3-hour trip allows the chance to taste award-winning Estate wines amongst the vineyards of their origin, and you will be expertly guided through all the aspects of what makes this area so biologically diverse and viticulturally unique.

“I cannot recommend the Waterford Wine Safari highly enough. The owner and wine maker Kevin Arnold is a good friend. They take a drive in an open “safari” vehicle around the estate and try the wines in the fields at the actual vines at lovely settings. It’s unique and magical. Anyone doing a day tour or time in the winelands HAS to do the Waterford Wine Safari. This is beautifully complimented by their wine and chocolate tasting! Just brilliant! Their wine is also some of the best in the Winelands and really should be tasted.”

A few more tips:

  • If you’re visiting the winelands during peak season, make your dinner reservations 6 months in advance as getting into restaurants can be tricky!
  • Visit Big Dog Café for the best coffee in Franschhoek and a delicious piece of cake too!
  • If you’re on a romantic getaway, or simply have a weakness for beautiful sunsets, visit Dieu Donne- whose wine tasting setup is phenomenal or Franschhoek Pass Winery. Both have lovely Cap Classiques – perfect for that crimson sunset!
  • Le Lude also have a great Cap Classique.
  • Add Babylonstoren to your must-visit list! The gardens are exquisite and they have a fantastic Chardonnay.
  • Take in everything the Franschhoek has to offer, from five-star accommodation, delectable food and great wine to the magical red-orange sunsets and the wonderful people.

Scroll down and let John’s pictures transport you to the picturesque Franschhoek Valley even for a few brief moments. For more on Franschhoek and the Cape Winelands click here.

July’s tour of the month is the ultimate East African safari getaway that offers wildlife enthusiasts the perfect opportunity to dine with giraffes. Experience everything Kenya has to offer, including the absolute abundance of the Masai Mara and added magical ocean bliss for those more inclined to enjoy sand and sea.

We love Julia’s Magical East African Adventure because it combines East Africa’s charm and culture at its finest. Visit five unparalleled luxury destinations that include the absolute abundance and magic of the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Zanzibar all in one.

“An undeniable favourite of mine is the safari experiences found in both Kenya and Tanzania, the place I now call home.” Julia Fryer, Director – Iconic Africa. “My favourite tour is a combination of Giraffe Manor in Nairobi for a night and then onto one of the incredible camps in the Mara where you get to observe the migration in absolute awe. Having been a horse-safari-guide living in the Mara for extended periods, I can undoubtedly say that one will battle to ever experience the genuine, wild bush experiences like you do in East Africa. What stands out for me is the vast expanse of green grasslands, space for your soul to expand, game as far as the eye can see, starry nights, crossing the Mara river on horseback (and having to navigate inquisitive hippos), gigantic banks of dark, thunder clouds, escaping flash floods and the cacophony of beetles singing their sunset tunes.”

Itinerary

Day 1: Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor is an exclusive boutique hotel, set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in Nairobi. As one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings, Giraffe Manor has extraordinary appeal, that extends back to the 1930s when European visitors first flocked to East Africa to enjoy safaris. With its stately façade, elegant interior, verdant green gardens, sunny terraces and delightful courtyards, guests often remark that it’s like walking into the film Out of Africa. Not to mention the herd of resident Rothschild giraffe who may visit morning and evening, sometimes poking their long necks into the windows, to say hi before retreating to their forest sanctuary.

Day 2 – 5: &Beyond Bateleur

&Beyond Bateleur

On the edge of the Mara Triangle, beneath the Olooloolo Escarpment, Swahili for “zigzag,” lies a lush, magical oasis of giant fig and wild ebony trees that is home to an intimate, colonial, Kenyan escape. Bateleur is a sanctuary of comfort, shade, coolness and luxury, a welcome retreat from the heat and wide-open spaces of the surrounding savannah.

Accommodation: Bateleur Camp

Day 6-8: Angama Mara

Angama Mara

Perched on the edge of Africa’s Great Rift Valley is a lodge that comes as close to heaven on earth, as possible. Angama Mara, Swahili for “suspended in mid air” boasts the best views in the Masai Mara. A place that constantly takes your breath away, where happiness reigns and peace is all encompassing, where you literally stand on the edge of the world. Owner managed and run by the reputable Fitzgerald family, Angama Mara is the ultimate African safari destination.

Day 9 – 11: Singita Faru Faru

Singita Faru Faru

Situated in the western corridor of the legendary Serengeti, Singita Faru Faru boasts its own beach and natural waterhole. Beyond that is the Grumeti River and the riverine woodland that surrounds it, home to a host of Africa’s most majestic creatures. Singita Faru Faru really is something else, it is the ultimate in classic safari lodges, set in one of the most exquisite locations, boasting incredible game experiences and the very best East African hospitality. Here you don’t even need to leave the lodge, due to the waterhole the safari comes to you.

Day 12 – 14: &Beyond Mnemba Island

&Beyond Mnemba Island

Just off Zanzibar’s north-eastern tip, resting on a secluded island, you will find Mnemba Island Lodge – Africa’s most exclusive beach lodge. Famous for its astounding coral reefs and its esteemed reputation for being one of the most amorous ocean destinations in the world, Mnemba Island Lodge is the perfect romantic getaway. With its rustic charm and its gorgeous ocean views, Mnemba will not disappoint!

This tour has been compiled especially for you by our very own East Africa specialist and combines only the very best in East African hospitality, classic safari experiences, sumptuous luxury and unbelievable wildlife encounters. For more please enquire here.

Three-time award winner of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World; Specialty Lodging in Maasai Mara National Reserve; and TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, this unique camp is your very own suite in the heart of the African bushveld. Stunning silhouettes and sunsets will steal your heart and the endless plains boasting an absolute abundance of wildlife will keep you mesmerised from the time you arrive until you return back to the Mara.

We love that this camp is steeped in history, rich in culture and at one with the environment!

Set on the very outskirts of the Masai Mara and on the edge of the Mara North Conservancy is this unbelievable luxury safari hideout. At Mara expeditions camp you immediately become an intrepid explorer, with so much to investigate, to learn and to enjoy. The never-ending plains become your playground and the big-hearted, ever-smiling, genuine African staff… your friends. Mara Expeditions Camp has been built on a small bend in the Ntiakitiak River where the dese riverine forest meets the golden plains. It’s a place where lion calls dominate the nights and the sounds of hippos snorting accompany each day. It’s the ultimate in African safari immersion.

Place of learning

The Masai Mara is a powerful place in Africa where you will learn many life lessons that could change the way you view the world forever. The Mara Expeditions staff will do everything possible to ensure that you make the most of and get the most of this exquisite landscape. The guides are exceptional, the game viewing second to none and the ability to connect with the African bushveld unparalleled. Every direction you look the game is aplenty. From Thompson’s gazelle, to Grant’s gazelle, zebra, to wildebeest there is an absolute abundance of plains game! Not to mention the majestic predators including lion, leopard and cheetah that lie hidden, waiting for the right time to pounce. So much excitement, so much adventure and so much beauty all in one place!

An ancient, intimate escape

Mara Expeditions is a small and intimate camp, perfect for a romantic safari getaway or a quiet family retreat. Steeped in history and African colonial culture there is tangible air of yesteryear. Authentic in every way with every single detail considered the camp’s five custom-designed tents are a treat for all the senses. The atmosphere is one of warmth, luxury and a palpable passion for Africa. Set in amongst the forest canopy each suite boasts every indulgent amenity you could possibly wish for. Eclectically yet colonially designed, the sense of adventure and exploration comes across in all the intricate furnishings such as brass chandeliers, old Indian campaign chests, rich leather furniture and soft cottons. Essentially the guest services, facilities and overall experience are only the very highest standards that Great Plains has become renowned for. Sip on that ice-cold Pimms and lemonade, relax and watch as the sun slowly sinks down over the shining savannah and listen as day turns to night around you.

The pinnacle of eco-tourism and sustainable conservation

The camp is temporary, transient and constructed in the spirit of mobility and non-permanence with the wilderness’s best interest at heart. In essence, Mara Expedition Camp can be completely removed and the area returned to the state in which it was found and perhaps even better. All construction is “green,” all energy solar and everything possible recycled.
