Check out these creative ways to add light to a dark apartment.

If your apartment doesn’t get enough natural light, it can make your home feel too dark and have an effect on your mood. However, there are plenty of ways to add more light to a dim apartment to make your place feel brighter and happier! Continue reading for a few creative ways to add more light to your unit.

Overhead Lights

While your apartment likely came with light fixtures and ceiling fan lights already installed, they often provide insufficient light for an entire room. If possible, swap your overhead lighting out for fixtures you prefer or with stronger lightbulbs- just be sure to check with your landlord or property manager first! You may be surprised what a new LED lightbulb can do to add light to the room.

Mirrors

If your living room or bedroom has windows, then you are bound to get some sunlight during the day. Mirrors are a great way to reflect sunlight and make a room feel much larger and illuminated! Hang mirrors, glass doors, or other metal items across from your windows to bounce the light and make the room feel bigger and brighter.

Festive Lights

Don’t overlook the power of festive lights! Hanging up a strand of fairy lights over your bed or couch is an easy and affordable way to add ambiance and a different type of lighting to your apartment. These lights are often softer or colorful and are perfect for turning on once the sun goes down to provide a calming vibe to your space.

Under Cabinet Lighting

Lighting is especially important in the kitchen, as you need to have good vision when chopping ingredients and cooking meals on the stove. While you probably don’t have extra room on your countertops for a large lamp, you can easily add under cabinet lighting to provide light exactly where you need it! These lights can usually be held in place with Velcro or command strips so they are easy to install and won’t damage the rental’s cabinets.

Keep these 4 important tips in mind when having a party using apartment amenities.

If you want to have a party with a large group of people, you may find that your apartment is too small for the guest list. However, if you live in an apartment complex, you may be lucky enough to have access to amenities! If your complex offers event spaces or the ability to book a private party at the pool, be sure to keep these four important things in mind.

Reserve In Advance

When using apartment amenities, you must be accommodating and reserve the space well in advance. Decide where is the best place to host your party, whether it is an outdoor area or in an event space within your complex. Ask about the reservation options and any rental fees or agreements, and be sure to leave plenty of time to allow your complex to prepare and schedule the event.

Restrictions

Since you are renting a space for a party, it’s essential to know about any restrictions ahead of time. For example, the event space will likely have a limit as to how many people it can hold, alcohol restrictions, and how late you can stay in the room. Ask about all of these considerations before the day of your party to ensure that everyone is on the same page and you follow the rules!

Be Considerate

Remember that you are renting a public area- it’s essential to be considerate of others around you. Your party will likely be in an area close to other units and neighbors, so you must do your best to keep the noise levels down. While most people won’t have an issue with a quiet birthday dinner, you don’t want to be keeping neighbors up late at night with music and loud guests.

Simple Decorations

If you plan to decorate the room for your party, ask about what is and isn’t acceptable beforehand. If you are allowed to hang decorations on the wall and make the party festive, be sure to keep it simple. The setup and take down process should be quick and quiet, as you don’t want to be popping balloons at midnight. When throwing a party in a common space, be considerate and remember that less decor is better!

Learn how to find the right unit in your apartment complex.

Once you find an apartment complex or building that you love, the next step is finding the best unit to live in. While you may feel like you have to grab the first unit you see, don’t be afraid to ask if there are any other units in the building! You may find a unit that is closer to the amenities you love, in a quieter location, or gets more sunlight. Continue reading to learn how to find the right unit in your apartment complex.

Sunlight

Do you want a unit that faces the sunrise, or are you a late sleeper that doesn’t want to be woken up every morning but the sunshine? This is something you should ask when touring an apartment complex, as you can ask the leasing agent or landlord which side of the building receives the most sunlight. While some people love to keep their blinds open and get as much natural light as possible, others may work night shifts and want their apartment to be darker during the day.

Noise Levels

How much do you value peace and quiet? If you’re not in your apartment much or don’t mind hearing people outside, then you may not care where your unit is located. However, if you go to bed early and do not want any outside noises, think about the location and if it is near the main road or outdoor amenities, such as a playground. Also, the higher floors in apartment buildings are typically the quietest, as they don’t get as much noise from the street or neighbors above their unit.

Access To Amenities

Many apartment complexes come with various amenities, such as a fitness center, pool, gaming room, tennis courts, and more. Depending on your lifestyle, you may want a unit that is very close to certain amenities, or as far away as possible from the resources. For example, being close to the gym could be great for those who don’t want to travel far to get in a quick workout, but being right next to the fitness center could be noisy. Take into account the busyness of the pathways outside the unit, and ask the leasing agent if there is a unit available that is not on such a busy walkway.

Learn a few important tips for summer apartment hunting.

Apartment hunting in the summer has its pros and cons, as there are more rentals on the market, but there is also more competition. Summer is the best time to move for many people as they can plan time off, so it’s essential to be prepared to ensure you don’t lose an apartment to another renter! Continue reading for a few tips to know before apartment hunting this summer.

Come Prepared

While you may be able to take your time touring apartments during the rest of the year, apartments will go very quickly in the summer months. When the market is hot, you want to go to each tour with the proper documents needed in order to fill out an application. Gathering all the documents you need to rent a unit, including your proof of identity and income, reference contacts, and credit score can give you an advantage over others who want the same place. Also, be sure to save enough to have your security deposit and first month’s rent ready to go.

Weekdays

Apartment hunting is always busy, but the weekends will be the busiest for showings. If you can take an hour on your lunch break at work to schedule a tour, this will be very beneficial in the long run. You are more likely to have a one-on-one meeting with the landlord, rather than touring the unit with a group of potential renters.

Beware The Challenges

While summer is a great rental season, it doesn’t mean that it is the best time for the renter. Fall and winter move-in dates will offer more savings for renters, as there are fewer apartments available. Since so many people are looking for apartments in the summer months, you won’t find any discounts or deals, and the affordable places will go very fast. It’s a good idea to start early and reach out to apartment complexes in May so they can contact you as soon as there is a summer opening. A simple email or phone call may be all it takes to help secure your new dream home!

Check out these tips for eliminating pollen from your apartment.

With spring comes beautiful weather, but it also brings seasonal allergies. Whether you’re inside or outside, pollens and allergens can cause headaches, runny noses, and itchy, watery eyes. Your apartment should be your safe space, and the last thing you want is to have pollen fill your home! Continue reading for four tips on how to eliminate pollen from your apartment.

Change Clothes

The clothes you wear can have all types of allergens on them, especially if you were outside for a long time. To avoid spreading pollen on your couch, bed, and other areas of your apartment, change into a different pair of “indoor clothes” as soon as you get home. Be sure to put the worn clothes in a laundry bin, and wash them within a few days.

Wash Your Hair

If you shower in the mornings, consider making a switch for the spring season to avoid bringing allergens into your home. Just like your clothing, your hair can hold allergens if you were outside, and pollen can be transmitted from your hair to your pillow at night. You don’t want to breathe in allergens as you sleep, so try to wash your hair at night more often, and wash your pillowcase regularly.

Groom Pets

Your pet’s habits will play a significant role in the amount of pollen in your apartment. If you have a dog and take him/her outside multiple times a day, they are very likely to bring in pollen that is attached to their fur. Be sure to groom them regularly in an area close to your front door, then vacuum up anything that falls on your floor. If you have a cat, keep him or her inside as much as possible to avoid tracking allergens into your home.

Deep Clean

A clean apartment is a healthy apartment! If you suffer from allergies, it’s important to clean your apartment often to get rid of all the dust and pollen that builds up over time. It’s also crucial to keep cockroaches out, as their droppings are one of the most dominant allergens found in the home. Keep your kitchen and bathroom clean, fix water leaks, and seal up any cracks and holes to keep insects away.

Check out the answers to the top questions that renters ask.

Moving into your first apartment is a big step, and you probably have a lot of questions! Every renter will have questions throughout their rental journey. Continue reading for a few of the top three questions that renters ask and the answers.

What Do I Bring For An Apartment Tour?

Touring apartments is a vital part of the apartment search process, as it’s critical to see the building in person before signing a lease. Pictures don’t show everything, and you want to have a good feel for the unit, and take a good look at the appliances, flooring, water pressure, and more. It’s always smart to check out a few apartments if possible, as it can’t hurt to have a few options, especially if one apartment is taken before you can apply. When preparing for a tour, be sure to bring everything you usually have in your wallet- your ID being the most important. You can also bring a list of particular questions that you have about the unit, so you don’t forget- such as questions about laundry, trash, the square footage, neighbors, etc. You never know if you will love an apartment at first sight, so also bring a form of payment if you would like to fill out an application.

What Does It Mean To Break The Lease?

You may have heard of the term “breaking the lease” and think that it means you can move out anytime you like, but this is not true. A lease is a binding agreement, so be sure to read it over carefully and decide if a year-long lease will work for you. Breaking the lease often comes with consequences, usually in the form of paying for a few months’ rent in order to legally break the lease.

What Kind Of Pets Can I Have In My Apartment?

Every apartment will have different rules about pets, so be sure to ask this question very early on! Some units allow all animals, some allow cats and no dogs, and some will only allow dogs that are under a certain weight. It completely depends on the management of the apartment community, so be sure to have all of the information about pet restrictions before signing a lease. If you have a different type of pet, such as a guinea pig or turtle, it’s best to ask the landlord or property manager about the specific policy on your animal. You should expect to pay some sort of pet-fee or deposit to keep your pet in your unit.

Check out our guide to cleaning your apartment when moving in or out.

Whether you are getting ready to move into a new apartment or move out of your current place, you must think about a very important factor: cleaning! When moving out, it’s essential to give your apartment a deep clean for the new tenants, but you must also take the time to clean when moving into your new home. Continue reading for a guide on cleaning your apartment when moving in or out!

Moving In

While it’d be great to move into a brand new apartment, odds are that you will likely be moving into a unit that someone has just moved out of. Cleaning on moving day may not be your first priority, as you want to get your items into the apartment as quickly as possible, but when boxes and furniture fill every room, it makes it hard to sweep and dust off surfaces. Take the time to do a quick cleanse of the empty apartment by following this checklist:

  • Vacuum carpets
  • Lightly wipe down surfaces
  • Clean bathtub, sink, and toilet
  • Windex windows and mirrors
  • Check vents and air filter
  • Clean the refrigerator and freezer

Hopefully, the previous tenants thoroughly cleaned the unit before moving out, and this will be a quick process. You’ll feel much better about moving your items into a freshly cleaned place, and can continue to clean at your own pace.

Moving Out

When moving out, it’s even more crucial to clean your apartment, as a very messy unit may result in not getting your full security deposit back. Remember that new tenants are taking over your space, and you want to give them a clean slate with no issues. As you pack and begin to move out, follow this checklist:

  • Vacuum/clean carpets
  • Check for potential stains on carpeting and flooring and remove as best as possible
  • Remove all nails and hanging strips from the walls
  • Remove scuffs from the wall and hardwood
  • Take out any food and trash from the apartment
  • Do a move out inspection with your landlord to discuss any potential damages

Remember that your apartment is a temporary home, and when it’s time for you to move out, someone else will be enjoying the unit. If you treat your apartment like home and clean it thoroughly, you shouldn’t have any problems!

Check out our guide on what to buy new or used for your apartment.

Moving into your first apartment can feel a bit overwhelming, and finding furniture for every room can get expensive. However, there are plenty of items you can buy used from a thrift store or consignment store to save a lot of money. Continue reading for a guide on what to buy used, and what items you should only buy new for your apartment.

Buy Used: Most Furniture

With so much access to used furniture, it doesn’t make sense to purchase all of your items at retail price. Shop around at your local consignment stores or online at various websites to find items such as a bed frame, coffee table, kitchen table, vanity, TV stand, and more. You may be surprised to find a great deal on pieces that are barely used! Thrift stores and antique stores are also full of great artwork, so keep an eye out for a piece that you really love. The only used furniture you should stay away from is anything upholstered, as it could contain particles you may be allergic to.

Buy New: Cookware

It’s important to buy new cookware for your kitchen, as you want to know the origin of the piece to ensure it is clean. You can find sets of pots and pans at discount stores if you are on a budget, and should be able to find a very affordable price for new items.

Buy Used: Lighting

Lighting is very important for an apartment, and you can find some great pieces at a garage sale or flea market. Look for antique lamps that catch your eye and will add a pop of color or personality to your space. Even if the lamp doesn’t look like anything special, remember that it is very easy to transform it will some paint and a new lamp shade for a very low cost!

Buy New: Certain Appliances

While you can buy a few appliances used, such as a toaster, microwave, or Keirug coffee machine, but there are certain appliances that need to be purchased new. Cleaning tools, such as vacuums, should be new, as they will lose suction power over time and not work as well. Blenders can also become dull over time, so it is worth it to spend a little more on a new model.

Check out these three tips for working from home in a small apartment.

Working from home comes with many advantages, but it is also can be difficult when living in a small apartment. It’s essential to have a designated workspace to be as productive as possible when working from the comfort of your home. Continue reading for a few simple tips on how to decorate a small apartment for work-from-home success!

Dedicated Office Space

The most important step is to have a desk or work area that allows you to get your home done efficiently. Some people may use their kitchen table or vanity, but it’s best to have a desk that is only used for work. Don’t make the mistake of sitting on the couch or staying in bed- you won’t be as productive, and it will be difficult to make the switch from “work” to “home” when your work day is over. Even in a small apartment, all you need is a simple desk and chair to give yourself a proper workspace.

Natural Light

Lighting is so important for productivity and overall wellbeing. If your desk is in a dark corner of a room, you will quickly feel the negative effects of staying inside all day in the dark. Try to place your desk as close to a window as possible to soak in the sunshine, and take your breaks outside on the porch or deck or by taking a short walk. Research has shown that regular access to natural light during the day leads to better sleep and improve quality of life, so it’s very important to make an effort to get some sun!

Personal Touches

Just like a deck in an office building, decorate your work area with a few personal touches! It can really make a difference when you have items on your desk that bring you joy, such as inspiring artwork, photos, fresh plants, and visually appealing storage and organization tools. It’s also essential to make your desk comfortable enough to sit in all day, so invest in a quality chair and a sturdy desk that will last a long time.
