The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body. The repetitive overhead motion when hitting the ball is highly unnatural and could exceed the limit of the joint. Around ⅔ of these injuries are caused by overuse, which means the joint has been repeatedly subjected to movements beyond its physiological capability. And while the physical activity itself already puts you at risk, you can still minimize it by following safety precautions.

What are the common injuries in tennis players?

 

1. Subacromial bursitis

This is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. It happens when there’s an inflammation of the large bursa located at the top of your shoulder. The bursa is a fluid-filled sac, which serves as a cushion in the joint to reduce the friction in the shoulder spaces. 

This condition is characterized by stiffness, tenderness and pain, especially when trying to reach your arm overhead. If it’s too severe, you may not be able to move your shoulder even slightly. 

2. Rotator cuff tears

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that provides strength and stability when moving your shoulder. Rotator cuff tears may happen as a result of the repetitive movement required when playing tennis, or a single traumatic event. 

This condition is characterized by a dull ache in your shoulder, which may be accompanied by weakness. The pain gets worse if you try to sleep on the affected side.

3. Glenoid labrum injury

This occurs when there’s a tear in the cartilage surrounding the socket in your shoulder. Some of the symptoms include pain, catching, grinding or locking sensation, weakness, and decreased range of motion. 

4. Shoulder dislocation

Whether it’s a partial, or complete dislocation, there will be instability and pain in your shoulder. It will be accompanied by bruising, deformity, weakness, numbness and swelling. 

5. Stress fracture

Depending on the severity, you may be left with permanent shoulder stiffness even after you have fully recovered. This could also affect your performance.

6. Muscle strain

Aside from the pain, redness, bruising and swelling, you may also be unable to move your shoulder at all. 

 

 

Home Management of Shoulder Injuries

 

1. Rest your affected shoulder to speed up the recovery process. You may be required by your physician to avoid playing tennis for a few weeks or months, depending on the severity of your injury.

2. Take non-steroidal anti-inflammatories for pain. Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Consult your doctor if the pain has not been reduced within a week.

3. Use a cold compress to help ease the pain and discomfort. You can simply use a bag of frozen corn, or peas and wrap it in cloth before putting it on your injured shoulder. You can do this several times a day, but make sure you don’t use it for more that15 minutes at a time.

4. Immobilization is also recommended aside from merely resting the affected area. In the case of some injuries, you will be required to wear a sling or brace.

5. With the help of a physical and an occupational therapist, you will have to perform strengthening and other rehabilitation exercises to further boost the muscle healing.

What is dehydration?

Dehydration transpires when you lose more fluid and electrolytes than you take in, and your body doesn’t have sufficient water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. Electrolytes are essential for our general health, as they are mineral compounds the body requires to regulate temperature and maintain a healthy fluid balance.

Dehydration may only induce minor symptoms, but it can also have a considerable effect on the body, especially for seniors and children. Severe dehydration in the elderly can be fatal and commonly leads to hospitalization. Those at the greatest risk of dehydration are individuals who do not drink a sufficient amount of water, or perspire frequently, or severely.

Dehydration can also occur as a side effect of medications, such as diuretics, and laxatives, or an effect of medical issues including diarrhea, vomiting, heat stroke, hyperglycemia, infections, or extreme workout.

There are three main types of dehydration:

 

  1. hypotonic (mostly loss of electrolytes) 
  2. hypertonic (mostly loss of water)
  3. isotonic (equal loss of water and electrolytes).  

The most common type of dehydration experienced by humans is isotonic.

As with most illnesses, prevention is the solution. Staying hydrated now is much simpler than treating dehydration later.

Effects of dehydration

Sufficient hydration plays a fundamental role in maintaining:

  • Circulation
  • Lubrication
  • Body temperature

  • Healthy ingestion and digestion
  • Processes to flush out the urinary tract, eyes, and other organs

The most common signs of dehydration may include:

  • Confusion
  • Difficulty walking

  • Failure to sweat or produce tears

  • Low blood pressure
  • Low urine production
  • Constipation

At about 5% to 6% water loss, a person experiences symptoms of increased fatigue, headaches, nausea, and paresthesias.

With 10% to 15% fluid loss, a person experiences symptoms of muscle cramping, dry and wrinkly skin, beginning of delirium, painful and/or reduced urine output, and a decline in eyesight. 

Losses of water greater than 15% are usually fatal.

You can usually reverse mild to moderate dehydration by drinking more fluids, but severe dehydration needs immediate medical treatment

What is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is one of the most common soft tissue conditions of the arm that affects 1-3%of American adults. It is caused by repetitive overuse movements of the arm and wrist, resulting in inflammation to the tendons of the elbow.

There are two techniques of performing this type of surgery:

  • Open surgery: The surgeon will make an incision in the palm of your hand, cutting the ligament free from the nerve.
  • Endoscopic surgery: The surgeon will use a telescopic device with a tiny camera to see into the affected area. Once it’s spotted, the surgeon will make one or two small incision in your hand or wrist, cutting the ligament.

Endoscopic surgery is less painful than open surgery and the recovery period is much shorter.

Before going through surgery, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits of the surgery  with your surgeon. Some of the possible risks are:

  • Infection in the wound area
  • Scarring
  • Incomplete cut to the ligament
  • Nerve and vascular injuries

During the recovery process, the ligament tissues slowly grow back creating more room for the nerve. The skin would usually heal in a few weeks, while the complete internal healing would take several months.

  • Wear appropriate gloves

Studies show that 60% of workers remove their protective gloves if they don’t provide enough dexterity for their hands –  they are leaving them vulnerable. Dexterity is important, especially when performing intricate task. If the glove doesn’t provide proper dexterity, you should look for one that offers the right combination of dexterity and protection to further prevent hand injury.  Aside from wearing the right gloves, it’s also important to always pay attention to where both of your hands are placed, especially for people who are navigating machinery.

  • Be aware  of pinch points hazards

It’s important to train yourself to recognize the pinch points hazards. The three kinds of hazards are:

  • Mechanical hazard – this kind of hazard is brought by some tools and machinery. If they are used incorrectly it may result in fingers getting caught, pinched, and crushed or getting wounded by the machine’s moving parts.
  • Contact hazard – this is mostly caused by sharp objects, debris, electrical current, chemicals and extreme hot or cold temperatures. Being in contact with such materials may result in a cut or a burn to your hands.
  • Personal hazard – this kind of hazard is related to wearing jewelry, loose clothing, improper usage of equipment, or defective equipment.

These three kinds hazards should be easily avoided! Don’t place your hands and fingers in such hazardous spots.

  • Inspect the tools before use

Before using a specific tool, check to see if it works well and if it’s safe to use. Tools that have loose or cracked handles are a frequent cause of hand and finger injury. Attempting to use defective tools is dangerous. ALWAYS put your safety first and use the right tool for the job.

  • Always be mindful when closing doors

Before closing the main door or a car door always make sure your hands or fingers are away from the edges. Fingers caught in a door can cause serious hand fractures, so always pay attention to details to prevent hand injuries from happening.    

  • Do not work with moving equipment

If there’s a way to stop the equipment from moving, properly do so. Working with moving equipment may result in traumatic hand injury.

Hand Pain

We have people who call and talk to us about their hand and wrist pain all the time and it’s usually been bothering them for a few months.  Sometimes it turns out that it’s more like a few years.

The pain or rather “achiness” can come and go and doesn’t tend to STOP them from doing anything but in the back of their mind, they admit it does worry them.

I had this one guy who works with his hands tell me that he just couldn’t remember anything happening but just started achy and then persisted and still hasn’t gone away.  He’s really worried because he works for himself.

Imagine….you use your hands for work…artist or musician…mostly work for yourself.  SO if your pain got worse….who could work for you?

No one.  You can’t call in sick.  There are no benefits to pull from. 

This artist told me it doesn’t stop him from doing anything but now that he’s worried and scared it could be worst.  It was a wake up call.  He doesn’t want the pain to get so bad that it stops him from working.  He doesn’t want to continue working out and lifting the way that he did before even though he loves doing Crossfit or some variation of it.

But guess what?  He called and rescheduled his appointment since he was starting to feel better.

Should I Wait?

He asked me….Should I Just wait because it’s starting to feel better?

My answer simply is NO.

Not because I need him as a client.

Truly because I’ve seen people wait. And wait.  Once it’s really bad, they want to rush in and get better in a visit.  That’s just not how the body works.

The hand and wrist didn’t just get better on it’s OWN. The pain got a little better because YOU decided to stop USING IT!  You literally stopped doing the things you want to do because you are worried and afraid it will get worse.

So what happens when you start to get more work?  And start doing more?  You never got to the root cause of why you had pain to start with.  Just getting to hand and wrist pain before it gets worse allows you to get rid of the problem FASTER which just saves you time and money.  Getting help now ensures that you get to the root cause of the hand and wrist pain so that you improve your chances of not having that problem come back.  And if it did, you would know what to do to nip it in the bud.

The bad perception about napping is now starting to change, seamlessly for a good reason. Having a little time out during the day has more health benefits than just simply giving an energy boost. Napping has been proven to provide a number of health advantages. As a matter of fact, some companies and business organizations have turned their conference rooms into sleeping rooms because they have realized that napping can help boost productivity.

But what exactly is a power nap? Miami occupational therapist, define a power nap as a 20-30 minute long day time sleep session. Here we explain why power naps are essential, and why you should start having them. Also, we will give you the interesting things you should know about power naps.

Different types of naps

There are different types of naps and that solely depends on what you want the nap to do for you.  The ideal nap happens between 1pm to 4pm, usually lasting for 10 to 30 minutes or an hour. Exceeding more than the allowed time may result in an unpleasant groggy feeling or sleep inertia. So, it’s best to be guided accordingly. Here are the ideal power nap durations:

  • 10-20 minute nap:

This type of nap gives quick boost and improves alertness. This is surely enough to get you back to work in a pinch.

  • 60-minute:

The benefits of a 60 minute nap are mostly for cognitive memory and processing. It will give you better ability to remember facts, places and people. But, you might experience some grogginess after it.

  • 90-minute:

This is considered to be a complete sleep cycle. It aids creativity, and emotional and procedural memory. But this kind of nap may lead to a slight amount of sleep inertia.

Our Miami occupational therapist recommends that when you nap, sit slightly upright, this is to avoid deep sleep. Dreaming during your nap time is a sign that you are sleep deprived.

Simple rules for napping:

You don’t want to end up groggy after taking a nap. Follow these simple rules for napping, so you’ll have a nap that will surely power you up.

  • Set your alarm:

A sweet duration for a nap is 20 to 30 minutes. This amount of time is adequate to make you feel alert, productive and creative.

  • Set your body to sleep fast:

Make use of s sleep mask, stay in a cool dark room that is free from distractions and put your phone on silent. All these will help setting your mind and body to fall asleep sleep fast.

  • Time your nap right:

An ideal time to take a nap is an hour or two after lunch because it is said that sugar levels and energy levels drop during those hours. Rather than having a cup of coffee, it is best to consider taking a nap. It would surely perk up your whole afternoon without having to break your night time sleep. If you intend to have a coffee, it’s better to drink one before your nap, so you wake up feeling its effects.  

  • Get back to your activity:

After the allotted time of your nap, you should get back to your usual activity. Turn on the lights, take a brisk walk, wash your face or do some stretching. This is to let your body know that your nap time is over.

Benefits of napping:

Power naps provide a number health benefits to our body and brain. NASA has also noticed its effects. They allowed their pilots to nap for 25 minutes each day and it resulted in better performance and alertness. There are more benefits that come with power naps:
