We are so tired! It’s amazing how much work such a small space requires. But like when you’re mid-renovation project, we’ve hit that mega low point where you don’t think it could look any worse, but we’re through the other side and it’s finally starting to come together. It’s really hard to get decent progress shots as there just never seems time to clear the decks enough to take any, but you can check out @youngvanadventures‘ Stories on IG for plenty of snapshots and videos behind the scenes on the build. For now, I’m just going to list off the… View Post

I can’t believe it’s November since I last gave you an update on the progress of our VW T5 van conversion project. Although it looks like not a lot has changed since then, loads and loads has been going on behind the scenes, with the electrics being the main focus. Luckily Ben’s a trained electrical engineer, so he’s more than able to get his head around a project like this. For any van build enthusiasts out there we have a 115 Ahr leisure battery installed under the driver’s seat. A split charge relay charges the battery when we’re driving and… View Post

After the completely incredible Just So Festival being a firm fixture in our family calendar for the last five years, we were absolutely gutted when we realised we weren’t going to be able to make it there  this year (unless we sacrifice our summer adventure to France in the camper van, and I was tempted, believe me). Maybe it was fate because right at that moment, the fantastically talented event team behind Just So, Wild Rumpus, announced a brand new festival for 2018 called Timber, that promises to have the same small, community feel and creative approach. ‘Timber is an extraordinary new festival… View Post

I won’t be doing much cleaning over the bank holiday weekend *smug face*. Wanna know why? Because I’ve finally found something that’s helped me to keep on top of the endless housework that comes hand-in-hand with a busy family home with two young kids, a mud-loving puppy and a constantly-moulting cat. I’ve got to be honest, when the Roomba 966 – an all-singing, all-dancing robot vacuum cleaner – first arrived, I was cynical. It comes with a hefty price tag (retails at around £800), so it needed to be something pretty special to convince me it would make a worthwhile… View Post

While I had all the painting stuff out to paint the living room aquamarine, it seemed rude not to introduce that soft green colour to the bedroom, too, especially when I saw how fresh and calming it felt on the walls. We’ve used it on the wall that used to be a pale, soft grey and it has definitely brightened up the room. I bought an old battered wardrobe a few years ago at a house clearance warehouse with the intention of painting it, but it dropped to the bottom of our to-do list pretty quickly. Riding high on the… View Post

Just as quickly as I decided to paint our living room wall black, I opted to give it an update and repaint it in Aquamarine Light from Little Greene. As it so often is with me, it was a pretty spur-of-the-moment decision. The January days were feeling so long and dark, and the house, with its build-up of clutter and mess, wasn’t helping matters. I needed a total refresh, and in a bid to bring in as much light as possible I decided the black had to go, at least for now. I still love that shade of black and… View Post

So, as I mentioned briefly in yesterday’s post, voting for this year’s Amara Interior Blog Awards #IBA17 closes THIS FRIDAY at 5pm. As always, I have left it until the eleventh hour to beg for your votes, but I am nominated for Best Craft Blog and I would be really thrilled to make the final shortlist. In a bid to win you over, I thought I’d do a super-quick round-up of my five most popular craft posts over the last year. Here goes… I made these compact Plywood bedside shelves back in February for our guest bedroom and I have plans to make… View Post

This year was our fifth adventure with Just So. Half of me can’t fathom how quickly those years have flown by, the other half can’t imagine a year without the Just So Festival knitted into the fabric of our family life. Five years in, I know my way around, I recognise the same volunteers, the same festival goers, the same costumes. We’ve got our festival rhythm down pat, but that feeling of magic, of being swept up in a glorious weekend of pure joy, has never faded. I still have those skin-tingling moments when you suddenly look around you and… View Post

Happy new year! I finally took the Christmas tree down today, but as usual, I’ve left most of the fairy lights up around the house to cheer me up through the depths of winter. Now, I’m not a big one for resolutions (although I do wonder if I need to give myself a bit of a kick up the bum this year, so I have a few things I’m mulling over), but if there’s one thing to get me feeling positive about a new year, it’s the start of a new project. Since I re-learned to knit, I’ve been knitting… View Post

We have a new arrival in Casa Young! Allow me to introduce Lyra, our nine-week-old Hungarian Vizsla puppy, who joined us just a couple of weeks ago. She’s gorgeous, has ears that feel like velvet and loves cuddles. What’s not to love?! The decision to get a family dog has been nearly 20 years in the waiting, as Ben has wanted a dog ever since I first met him. Every so often he’d bring it up, but the conversation has been getting more and more frequent over the last couple of years. Then earlier this year I offered to dog-sit… View Post
