Change is on the horizon for Australian immigration, particularly for regional Australia. Two current regional visas will close and be replaced with two NEW regional provisional visas, available from 16th November 2019. A third permanent visa will also be available for holders of the new regional visas to transition to, providing they meet minimum income threshold requirements and comply with visa conditions.

A new Sponsored Parent (Temporary) 870 Visa will be open for sponsorship applications from 17th April 2019. It has been designed to provide parents with a new pathway to temporarily reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia. Regulations on the Sponsored Parent (Temporary) 870 Visa were released on 8th April 2019, including application charges and a minimum household income threshold.

Changes to Australia’s sponsored family visas are scheduled to commence on 17th April 2019. The new Migration Amendment (Family Violence and Other Measures) Bill was recently passed through Parliament. It will have a significant impact on whether an Australian Partner Visa application can be lodged when the applicant (the partner or spouse) is living in Australia.

Australia's government recently announced changes to the lists of skilled occupations for Australia's skilled visa programmes. These changes came into effect on 11 March 2019 and include occupations that will be:

  1. Added to the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL),

  2. Moved from the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) to the MLTSSL,

  3. Added to the Regional Occupations List (ROL), and;

  4. Removed from the STSOL.
