When you’re ready to make the leap into the world of small business ownership, one of the most difficult decisions you’ll make is choosing what kind of business is right for you. Whether it’s building a business from the ground up, opening a franchise or buying an existing business, follow these seven steps to make sure it’s the right choice for you.

Step 1: Make a list of must haves

Create three to five specific goals that will be core to your future company and your happiness as a business owner. Instead of saying “I need to enjoy what I’m doing,” list specific rules that any business you own MUST have. These rules should be unbreakable and non-negotiable.

HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES:

  • My business must be a sale sand marketing-driven business — that’s what I do best.
  • I need to be able to spend part of my day outside.
  • Working remotely needs to be an option so I can continue to travel.
Step 2: Focus on the Profit not the Product

Whatever it is that you do best — whether it be sales, marketing or operations — should be the driving factor in the revenue of any business you consider. If you enjoy the work you’re doing, the product or service your business provides becomes less important. You should fall in love with the lifestyle of your new business and your new role, not solely the product or service you’re selling.

FOR EXAMPLE, if you love sales, opening a well established sandwich shop may not be the best choice for you. — even if the subs are delicious!

Step 3: Pick a Starting Point

Does the thought of building your own business from the ground up energize you or exhaust you? Would you have more fun purchasing an existing business or franchise and working to improve it? Both are fulfilling, exciting routes to take, but the key is deciding what works best for you.

Buying an existing business allows you to analyze how the business has performed thus far and make enhancements to improve its long-term worth. Buying a franchise provides an established business model, which many small business owners find helpful.

Step 4: Search Business Directories

If you decide starting a business from the ground up isn’t the right choice for you, there are several other business opportunities available, from signing on with a franchise to buying an existing business. The internet has many resources, but when looking to buy an existing business it always makes sense to work with a qualified business broker.

GFS: Tell us a bit about your background and how you got started with HomeWell.

LY: I have a diverse healthcare background. I got my start in healthcare working for one of the nation’s largest durable medical equipment (DME) companies in the country. Working here, I fell in love with the patients and the stories that they told when they would come into the store. The relationships I built with the patients were inspiring as it helped me to realize the impact senior care has on combating isolation, depression and loneliness – conditions that often lead to the exacerbation of many disease processes.

My transition from DME led to skilled home health services for a start-up company. During my tenure, I played pivotal roles in both sales and operations, including quadrupling the business in the first year, expanding the company to multiple locations, and diversifying the service offering to include non-skilled services. I went on to lead several skilled and non-skilled service start-ups that eventually led me to HomeWell Senior Care.

I joined the HomeWell team in June of 2011, working directly for the founder, and had my hands in many areas of the organization, including: training, development, sales and operations. I was promoted to CEO in 2014 and have used my experience to develop and lead the processes we use today to educate, onboard, and support our new and existing franchise owners.

GFS: What makes an At-Home Senior care franchise a good investment?

LY: The senior care industry is thriving. 10,000 baby boomers will turn 65 each day over the next 15 years, fueling the aging population and creating high-demand for franchises like HomeWell. We’re already seeing 40% of adults ages 65+ need assistance with daily living activities. This leads to an estimated $522 billion a year spent by family and friends to provide informal care for aging Americans. Additionally, home care offers a much lower barrier to entry than other industries, and a much higher return on a single unit. In fact, according to the Home Care Pulse Annual Home Care Benchmarking study, the average home care agency brings in $1.6 million a year in annual gross revenue.

GFS: Is there any particular background or skill set that you look for in potential franchise candidates?

LY: Our successful franchisees have been from a variety of backgrounds; however, we believe there are certain skills that prove to be beneficial when running a HomeWell agency. We find our most successful owners have business management experience, resiliency and a focus on execution. It’s also interesting to note that some of our most successful owners have no previous health care experience. We believe if they possess the right skills for business ownership, we can teach them the industry.

GFS: How long does it take for someone to get there location up and running after signing a franchise agreement?

LY: HomeWell is committed to providing our franchise owners with the tools and information needed to succeed from the start. During the initial months, our owners receive dedicated support from the Opening Services, Training, and Support teams. These teams guide our owners through important tasks needed to establish their business, gain industry knowledge, and prepare for a successful business opening. Our goal is to not only help our owners set expectations and begin navigating the journey into new business ownership, but to launch quickly and effectively with decreased days to the dollar. Our pre-opening support is divided into three key phases:

1. Pre-Training: Support with completing the tasks necessary to start a HomeWell franchise and receiving foundational home care and industry training

2. Core Training: Five days of onsite comprehensive training that includes topics such as: the Franchisor/Franchisee relationship, an industry overview, HomeWell differentiators, navigating the health care maze, business ownership, management and organizational structure, talent management, care management, and sales and marketing.

3. Post-Training: Focus on getting our owners ready for launch.

Throughout the Pre- and Post-Training programs, our owners receive individual weekly support calls, group webinars and online training modules that educate on key topics relevant to running a home care agency.

In addition to our upfront training, our owners receive significant support during the launch phase of their business and throughout their life as a HomeWell franchisee. This support includes five days of onsite support during an owner’s first year of business and seven weeks of robust B2B sales account education and coaching.

GFS: What is the outlook for the senior care industry, and where do you see HomeWell’s position in this market?

LY: The outlook for the senior care industry is very promising. We are seeing demand grow exponentially year-over-year and revenues for the global home health sector are projected to grow to $300 billion by 2020. HomeWell specifically is poised to meet this demand and our brand is positioned well for growth.
