We make purchasing leather easy with our conversion calculator and other helpful resources on our website. Learn how you can find the information you need, when you need it, right at your fingertips.

Conversion Calculator

Arguably the most useful tool on our website is our conversion calculator. One of the most frequent questions we are asked is how to convert fabric yards to square footage. One 54″ fabric yard equals 18 square feet of leather. You may convert sizes easily by visiting the conversion calculator under the Tools heading on our website. In addition to converting yards to square feet, there is an option for converting square meters to square feet. We also have an option to convert meters to yards, which is helpful when ordering Garrett Wovens, Tubular Wovens, Welt Cord, or Rug Binding.

Hide Diagrams

Another question customers often ask is: what is the average hide size? Hide sizes and cutting yields vary per product. Most products are available in both whole and half hides. However, some products are half hides only, such as DiModa Cobra, DiModa Gatora, Jubilee, Jubilee Gem, and some Capelli Specialty. We sell other products as whole hides only, including Sheepskin, Glam Sheepskin, Capelli Natural, and Capelli Stenciled. For easy reference, we have hide diagrams of many of our products listed under the Tools heading. There are printable PDFs that show the average hide size with dimensions and average usable areas. It is important to remember that hide sizes vary and these are general guidelines to show average measurements.

Wall Applications Instructions

Inquiries regarding leather for wall applications have really increased and for good reason. We have seen gorgeous leather wall installations! We offer six different styles of wall applications and designers may choose from hundreds of color options. The most common question our customers have when considering wall applications is how are the products installed? Installation is easy, which is one of the reasons why our products are so popular. We list step-by-step installation instructions for each style, along with architectural drawings and specification guidelines. Printable PDFs are readily available under Tools and Wall Applications Information, so you can specify these products with confidence.

We linked up to three of our closest leather colors to match the original model colors. Simply click on the link and you will be able to request a sample from our catalog page.

Chair Chart

It is not always easy to estimate how much leather is required for different types of furniture. To help you get a general idea, we compiled a list of different styles of chairs and the approximate square footage required for upholstery. This helpful Chair Chart is under the Tools section of our website. As always, we strongly encourage you to consult with your upholsterer to determine the exact square footage required.

Leather rug binding gives area rugs a refined finished look. Area rugs with a leather border offer aesthetic beauty, as well as excellent resistance to wear. In fact, many leathers develop a rich patina over time and will outlast the rug itself.

How Rug Binding is Made

Rug Binding begins with full hides of genuine leather. First, we calculate how many hides are required to fill the order. After we pull the leather, we cut the hides into strips using our computerized cutting machine. Each hide is laid flat on the cutting bed and secured in place with plastic to prevent the hide from moving during cutting. Next, we collect all of the cut strips and move to assembly in our workroom. It is there where we then use non-toxic, GREENGUARD certified adhesive to glue the ends of the strips together. Seams occur approximately 60 to 80 inches apart, depending on the leather. We reinforce the seams with additional adhesive on the back of the leather for extra durability. Lastly, we roll the finished product and ship it accordingly. We are happy to ship orders directly to workrooms or to rug manufacturers.

We originally developed Avion for aircraft interiors. This soft leather has a uniform grain and a durable finish. It is ideal for high traffic areas. We introduced the collection with 20 colors based on recommendations from our customers and it quickly became a top-selling product. After just two years, we more than doubled the size of the collection by adding 30 more colors. Today, Avion continues to be a customer-favorite across multiple industries for numerous reasons.

The 20 original Avion colors

Extensive Color Options

Due to growing demand, we introduced 15 more colors this year.

The 15 NEW Avion Colors

Avion is now our largest leather collection with 80 different hues. All of the colors are based on customers’ requests and some of the colors are from previous custom orders. Since we added these custom colors to our collection, you don’t have to worry about long production lead times.  Now, you can receive leather right away, which saves precious time and money.

Fast Delivery

It is costly to have an aircraft grounded for an extended period of time. We understand the importance of shipping products quickly in order to meet tight production schedules and deadlines. In the fast-paced world of aviation, quick shipment is imperative. Previously, we treated hides one-at-a-time to pass aviation flammability requirements. Treating individual hides delays shipping because the hides have to fully dry before we can pack them. With Avion, we can ship flame treated leather immediately, without delays.

We treat all colors of Avion during the tanning process to meet FAA and international flammability specifications. This proactive manufacturing approach eliminates the wait for flame treated leather. In fact, Avion is part of our Guaranteed In Stock program. If you need leather quickly, look no further. We strengthened our reputation for going above and beyond for each and every customer by shipping “on demand”, without sacrificing quality.

Superior Quality and Durability

Avion is readily available to meet tight deadlines, while maintaining the highest quality standards. It is known for its soft hand, consistent grain, and durable finish and can withstand the demands of high traffic areas. These requirements are challenging to meet, especially for leather that is flame-treated. We originally worked with tanneries in Germany when we introduced Avion almost 20 years ago. Customers loved it and our supplier at the time had difficulty meeting the high demand. As a result, we moved production to Italy to uphold our high quality standards on a consistent basis.

Avion: Rouge, Wicker, Macadamia, and Otter

 Maximum Cutting Yields

Today, we continue to work with tanneries in Italy and use large European hides. Avion has the softness of a full grain with the consistency of an enhanced grain leather. The large hide sizes, combined with the consistent grain, results in maximum cutting yields. Customers have reported up to 90%+ cutting yields with Avion. Higher cutting yields means minimal waste and maximum value.

Avion is a top-selling product across multiple industries. It is an ideal leather for every application, especially high traffic areas. Customers use  Avion for hospitality, residential, and corporate designs, yacht and automotive interiors, and for wall applications.

Contact us today to receive a new brochure showing all 80 colors.

One way you can really impress your clients is to use leather for wall coverings and other vertical surfaces. Leather provides beautiful color and texture, added warmth, reduced noise, and exceptional durability. Previously, we published a step-by-step guide for our Wall Panels and Wall Tiles. With our Wall Panels and Wall Tiles, there are many ways to make each project unique with buttons, beveled edges, nail heads, and decorative stitching. Today, we’re going to review a few additional unique wall covering options that are sure to impress your clients.

Cast Panels

Like the Wall Panels we discussed in our last blog, Cast Panels are made with an MDF substrate. Cast Panels, however, are different because we combine bold lines and shadow play with a routed design on the surface. Cast Panels come in different designs and styles. You can mix and match panels with a “V” or “X” pattern to create a unique layout or to draw the eye in different directions. Choose from three sizes and hundreds of leather colors. Installation is easy. We include detailed instructions and all installation materials with every order.

Cast Panels

Pitched Panels

You may also add dimension to your vertical surfaces by using Pitched Panels. These lightweight, aluminum panels are fireproof to meet industry standards. Create added depth and intrigue by mixing and matching flat and pitched panels. Choose from three sizes and hundreds of leather colors.

Pitched Panels install easily with a vertical rail system. Simply secure the rails to the wall surface and hook the panels into the rail system. All installation materials and detailed instructions are included with every purchase.

Pitched Panels

Alpine Tiles

Alpine Tiles overlap to create a beautiful three dimensional pattern. The designers who fabricate these tiles were inspired by the Italian Alps. Hence, the name Alpine Tiles. Since their introduction, however, other designers have interpreted these unique wall coverings in many different ways for various projects. With literally hundreds of leather colors, Alpine Tiles can represent numerous themes, depending on the room setting and color palette. For example, Alpine Tiles in colors of blue, teal, and green may represent mermaid scales. Other colors may convey the idea of reptile skin. Our favorite interpretation for these tiles was the Georgia pine cone, a nod to the home of Microsoft’s Technology Center.

Alpine Tiles consist of leather adhered to fire-rated PVC backer. The flexible substrate allows for the tiles to be mounted on a slightly curved surface. Decorative stitching is also optional. Installation is easy. We include all installation materials and detailed instructions with every purchase.

Alpine Tiles | Microsoft Technology Center, Atlanta

How to Order

The process for ordering these three products is slightly different than ordering our standard Wall Panels and Wall Tiles. Once we receive all of the required information, we will calculate the number of panels or tiles needed and provide a CAD drawing of the layout for approval. We need the following information to provide a final layout and price for the project.

  • Dimensions of the vertical space
  • Style – Cast Panel, Pitched Panel, or Alpine Tile
  • Size – Choose size(s) for Cast Panel or Pitched Panel. Alpine Tiles are one size only
  • Leather – Choose leather product(s) and color(s)
  • Decorative Stitching  – Optional for Alpine Tiles. Choose thread color(s)

Again, installing all three of these types of wall coverings is easy. We include all installation materials and detailed instructions with every order for these products. Let us help you impress your clients. Contact us today to discuss your next project.

Do you specify wall applications for your clients? Have you considered using leather wall panels or wall tiles for a project, but reconsidered because you thought it would be too complicated? If so, you have come to the right place. We make ordering wall panels and wall tiles easy. Here is a step-by-step guide to making your next wall installation go smoothly.

Buckhead Tower | Cadence Angora and Caressa White Wall Panels | Designed by Niles Bolton Associates

Plan Ahead

Scheduling is one of the most important factors to keep in mind when specifying leather wall panels or wall tiles for your project. It is best to begin the planning stages as early as possible to leave ample time to consider all of your options, review quotes, receive payment, and allow sufficient time for production. One of the first questions we’ll ask is, what is your due date? We recommend contacting us at least six months prior to installation, so we can help you throughout the entire process, from start to finish. Depending on our production schedule, we might be able to complete your project in less time.

Determine the Surface Area

The second piece of information we’ll need is the dimensions of the vertical surface. Whether it is for an entire room, a single wall, or a small area, send us the final dimensions of the space. With this vital information, we will help you determine the number of panels or tiles required for your job. We provide initial estimated quotes for wall panel and wall tile projects based on overall square footage of the space.

Consider Your Options

This is where the fun begins. While it may seem overwhelming at first, we make the selection process easy. Here is a breakdown of your options. Feel free to mix and match styles and colors. For example, you may use both Flat and Padded Wall Panels within a space and incorporate different colors. Visit our Gallery for inspiration.

Style

It is important to use the correct terminology when discussing the different options for your project. Wall Panels are much thicker than Wall Tiles. The list below details the differences between the different styles.

  • Flat Wall Panels have leather fully wrapped and secured around 1/2 inch thick routed MDF substrate. Thickness is approximately 5/8 inch.
  • Padded Wall Panels have leather fully wrapped and secured around foam topped, routed MDF substrate.  Thickness is approximately 3/4 inch.
  • Woven Panels have Garrett Wovens® fully wrapped and secured around 1/2 inch routed MDF substrate. Thickness is approximately 5/8 inch.
  • Wall Tiles have leather adhered to recycled leather backer. Thickness is approximately 1/8 inch.

Flat Wall Panels | Padded Wall Panels | Woven Panels | Wall Tiles

Leather color
  • Refer to our color binder or drawer box set to select the leather and color of your choice. You have literally hundreds of color options. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different colors and textures.
Determine Your Budget

Once we know the square footage of the space, along with the style and color of your Wall Panels or Wall Tiles, we can provide you with an estimate. Pricing varies based on these factors. This is the minimum information we require to give you an idea of what the project may cost for budgeting purposes. Once we receive approval to move ahead with the project, we will work with you to finalize more details and provide an actual quote.

Finalize Design Details

Once the budget is approved and you have the green light to proceed, it’s time to finalize design details. Begin by choosing the shape(s) and size(s) for your Wall Panels or Wall Tiles and the layout for the space. Once the design is completed, send it to us for review. We will use your CAD drawing to confirm sizes and quantities required. If you are unable to provide us with a CAD drawing, we will provide one for you. At this time, we will provide a formal quote, detailing the exact sizes and quantities needed to complete the project.

Sizes and Shapes
  • 18″ x 18″
  • 12″ x 12″
  • 8″ x 8″
  • 4″ x 4″
  • 4″ x 8″ rectangle
  • 2″ x 10″ parallelogram
  • Custom sizes and shapes are available. Let us know what you have in mind. We can adjust the sizes accordingly to achieve the design you want.
Additional Options

We offer a number of enhancements to add to your Wall Panels or Wall Tiles.

  • Decorative stitching may be added to both Wall Tiles and Flat Wall Panels. Choose from 20 colors of Tex 210 Thread.
  • Beveled Edges are available for Flat Wall Panels.
  • Buttons may be added to Padded Wall Panels. We will cover the buttons in the leather of your choice.
  • Nailheads may be added to either Wall Panels or Wall Tiles. We offer a variety of colors including silver, gold, brass, and black.
  • Installation tools for both Wall Panels and Wall Tiles are available for your convenience.

Decorative Stitching | Beveled Edges | Buttons | Nailheads

Provide Final Approval and Deposit to Begin Production

The last step is final approval. We will provide a final CAD drawing and a formal quote with all of the details for your review. Once you approve both the final drawing and formal quote and we receive the deposit, we can begin production. All Wall Panels and Wall Tiles are made in the USA on a per order basis. Depending on the size and scope of the project, production usually takes between 6 to 12 weeks.

The Benefits of Leather Wall Applications

Leather wall panels and wall tiles are an elegant option for vertical applications. Whether for interior wall coverings, reception desks, or bars, leather provides beautiful color and texture, added warmth, reduced noise, and exceptional durability. We are here to help you every step of the way. Please contact us today to discuss your next vertical surface project.

Glittering pearl and metallic leather colors are in high fashion. They can be found in clothing, accessories, handbags, and furnishings. Designers often ask us what the differences are between these two types of leather. While both have a special sparkle to add some flair to your designs, they are very different.

Pearl Leather

Pearl leather has a softer look and more subtle sheen than metallic leather. To achieve the pearl look, most pearl leathers have a liquid topcoat sprayed on the surface of the hide. We may add a pearl appearance to any of our existing semi-aniline products, including full hides of Shagarrett, by using this method.

Rotary Spray Line - YouTube

In comparison, our Pearlessence leather has a specially formulated finish with a pearl additive. This combination pearl finish provides superior durability and increased water resistance. Pearlessence is available in full hide sizes averaging 55 to 60 square feet. It is suitable for any upholstery application, including high traffic areas. It is typically more durable than metallic leather.

Pearlessence: Copper, Silver, Gold, and Bronze

Metallic Leather

Metallic leather offers a bolder look and higher sheen with foil applications. There are many different styles of metallic leather, including foil transfer on suede, hair-on hides with foil, and full metallic leather.

One metallic trend is foil transfer on suede. Split suede is smaller than the more desirable grain layer. Split suede has a smoother surface, which makes it more difficult for the foil to adhere to the hide. As a result, foil transfer on suede tends to de-laminate and peel easily.

Another type of metallic leather is hair on hides. For example, we have different colors and styles of metallic hides in our Capelli Specialty collection. These hides consist of the fibrous grain layer, which allows the foil to adhere better for increased durability. They are also larger than suede. These hides are available in either whole or half hide sizes, depending on the pattern. We recommend Capelli Specialty for moderate to low traffic areas.

Capelli Specialty: Van Gogh Spiga Gold, Pandora Pearl, and Metallic Leopard

Finally, there’s full metallic leather. For example, our Jubilee collection is also made from the uppermost layer of the hide. Jubilee does not have a spray finish like Pearlessence. Instead, this leather has full foil coverage. After the hides are tanned and dyed, they receive a finishing basecoat as an adhesion resin. Then, we apply a foil application to the surface of the hides. Once the foil is secure in place, the final steps of production are milling and staking to increase softness and pliability. Due to the limited size of the foil, Jubilee is available in half hides only. We recommend Jubilee for most upholstery applications. It is a great option for outside seats and accent pieces, either smooth or embossed with a pattern.

Jubilee: Goldrush, Ultramarine, Pure Platinum, Black Diamond

Embossing

You may add texture to both Pearlessence and Jubilee collections with embossing. We have over 30 Impress patterns from which to choose. Impress patterns are available in half hides only.

Pearlessence Copper with Impress Seashells

In addition, Jubilee Gem is embossed metallic leather. Made in Italy, Jubilee Gem is readily available for immediate shipment. The hides have an elegant pebble pattern, which mimics the appearance of sparkling gemstones as light reflects off the surface. Jubilee Gem is also available in half hides only. We recommend it for most upholstery applications.

Jubilee Gem: Goldrush, Iced Champagne, Ganache, Rose Gold, and Pure Platinum

Leather cleaning and proper care are essential to keeping your leather looking its best for years, decades, and even for generations. While leather is well-known for its durability and longevity, it still requires proper care. For 30 years, we’ve answered numerous inquiries regarding leather cleaning and maintenance. The method for leather cleaning varies depending on the type of leather, amount of use, and extent of wear. Here are our top leather cleaning tips.

Maintain Your Leather With Simple Dusting

In general, leather is a low maintenance material. You should wipe your leather occasionally with a dry or slightly moist, soft, clean cloth to prevent dust particles and other airborne debris from accumulating on the surface. Simply moisten the cloth with a small amount of pure water. Never use furniture polish, ammonia based cleaners, or harsh soaps. These products may damage the finish on leather. For best results, we recommend 3-in-1 Leather Wipes. These are safe to use on both semi-aniline and pure aniline leather products.

Blot Liquid Spills Immediately

When spills do occur, time is of essence. It is best to act immediately and blot up excess liquid with a dry, clean cloth. If necessary, use Mild Cleanser to absorb the spill and clean the entire stain completely. It is best to let the wet area dry naturally. Do no use hair dryers or other direct sources of heat to dry the leather quickly, as this could cause further damage. You may use Mild Cleanser on both semi-aniline and pure aniline leather products.

If a spill is caused by butter, oil, or grease, do not use water or Mild Cleanser. Instead, use a dry cloth to absorb the excess grease. Leave the leather alone to allow the spill to dissipate into the leather naturally over a short period of time.

Clean Ink Marks As Soon As Possible

We are often asked about ink stains on leather. Again, when faced with an unwanted ink stain, it is important to act quickly. Use Ink Remover to remove the stain as soon as possible. Simply rub the Ink Remover stick over the stain to apply the ink remover. Allow the ink remover to sit for 30 to 60 seconds. Then take a dry, clean cloth to remove both the ink remover and the stain. Do not rub aggressively. Reapply ink remover, let sit, and gently rub off as needed until the stain is completely gone. Ink Remover works best when applied to the stain when the stain occurs. Permanent inks are not removable from leather.

Ink Remover - YouTube

Protect Your Leather Over Time

For best results, we recommend periodically applying protector to nourish your leather, retain its softness, and protect it from future stains. Our Leather Care Kit has everything you need for long term care, including cleaner, protector, ink remover, and detailed instructions.

Use Appropriate Products For Nubuck Leather

Nubuck leather is a special type of leather that requires different care. Nubuck leather is buffed to expose the fiber structure. Therefore, we do not recommend using 3-in-1 Leather Wipes, Mild Cleanser, or Ink Remover for nubuck products. Instead, we offer a Nubuck Care Kit, which has cleaner and protector specifically formulated for nubuck products. In addition, it includes a reviving sponge, which you may use to restore the nap of the leather.

Most leathers will age beautifully and develop a rich patina. Follow these simple care tips, and you’ll be able to enjoy your leather for years, as it improves over time.
