For our last couples photo shoot, we ventured into a magical forest where you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale. We love discovering wonderful locations and were delighted to find this one not too far from home. There were giant birds nests scattered around, some were large enough to sit in. The trees towered overhead, allowing soft, filtered light to flow through and illuminate the forest. It was another perfect location for our lovely couple, Jess and Dan.
Outdoor Couples Photography around Melbourne
The day couldn’t have turned out more perfectly. It was a sunny twenty six degrees, which meant that Jess could wear a floaty summery dress. We chose red as it was a great contrast to the forest colours. Dan was styled smart-casual in a navy suit with and shirt. White would have also been beautiful as well, but we’re sure we’ll be back there with a bride and groom. This forest would be a perfect location for a summer wedding.
Outdoor photography is our specialty. We just love capturing our couples in natural light, with nature as the backdrop. Armed with just our cameras and a reflector to assist us with lighting, we created some fairytale-like images of our couple which we’re sure they will love.
Not only do we create gorgeous photos for you to cherish, we can also help you with styling and choosing the right location which will make your photos turn out that much more special. Call us or email us to discuss a special photo shoot for you and your loved one.
We love taking portraits and are always looking for ways to refine our photography skills. This involves going out there for some personal creative time with our models and finding ways to take the best images. Posing our subjects and knowing their best angles is an important part of photo taking. Having a beautiful model in front of our lenses does not mean that we’re guaranteed a great picture. We still have the job of directing them to do what is needed for the look that we’re trying to achieve. This helps tremendously when it comes to directing our clients, who aren’t models, on their photo shoots.
Fine Art Photography
Fine art photography in Melbourne is something which we’re always aiming to produce consistently. Creating mood-filled images which evoke emotion is what excites us. Needless to say, when we discovered the Petzval Art Series lenses, we were super excited. These lenses were just what we needed to make our images that much more special. They’re not for everyone. Some photographers really dislike them. Sharpness is not a selling point for these lenses. They produce dreamy photos with amazing background radial blur.
Petzval lenses – Lomography
Our first purchase was the Petzval 85mm 2.2 lens. It’s a portrait lens, much cheaper than our 85mm 1.2 lens but it produces some special shots. For this shoot, I styled my model up in a gorgeous white (bridal-like) dress. We headed off to a spot at Ruffey Lake Park, which is close to where we are located. We’ve shot at this location a couple of times previously, but never in spring before. The place looked magical with all the white spring flowers around. Ideally, we would have liked some blossoms as a backdrop but the rain had ruined them that week. The white flowers (I think they’re from the Snow Drops variety) worked just fine.
The Petzval 85mm 2.2 lens gives a much gentler radial blur compared to our new 58mm 1.9 lens. You do need very steady hands to get anything sharp with this lens and the right background is required and foreground is not necessary for the dreamy effect. I’ve used this lens in bright sunshine, in overcast weather and with the sunset behind my model. Bright sunshine is probably my least favourite light situation when it comes to using this lens. This Petzval 85mm produces amazing lens flare at sunset. The background swirl is lovely for an artistic portrait.
This photo shoot with is just divine. It’s a scene which we’d be happy to take a couple for a photo shoot who want something amongst nature. The rock face make the scene seem like it’s somewhere in the wilderness but it’s actually very close to a densely populated area so it’s going to appeal to those who don’t want to travel far. There’s so many other lovely spots surrounding this area if we were wanting a bit of variety.
Hope you enjoy these images as much as we do. Maybe they inspire you to get out there to get creative. Maybe you might want to contact us to discuss your own magical photo session with us.
We’re always striving to take our photography to the next level. With photography, it’s easy to get lost amongst the pack and produce similar shots to what everyone else is producing. It’s not enough for us to produce the best photos which our clients have seen of themselves, we want to create some magic which takes their breath away – without too much use of photoshop to create them! We want to be known as fine art photographers in Melbourne. We want to be amongst the best. This was a challenge to which we gave some serious thought, resulting in our recent purchases of the Lomography Art Series lenses.
We’ve always loved the film look. There’s even a film camera sitting in our office with rolls of film, ready to go! Unfortunately, we haven’t taken it out for a photoshoot yet. It’s too easy just to pick up our digital cameras and apply a film filter to our shots to give us the look we’re after. Still, a film filter applied to the photos was just not creating that magic we were after. After seeing some recent works from one of our favourite photographers (Emily Soto) using the Lomography Petzval 85mm 2.2 Art Series lens, we decided that that was the direction which we wanted to go as well.
What is Lomography ?
The Lomographic Society was founded in Austria in the early nineties. They came up with the type of photography which is known as Lomography, after experimenting with a cheap Russian toy camera which produced photos with soft focus, vignetting and high contrast. Lomography is gaining popularity and is considered an art movement. The Lomography Society have created a website where you can satisfy all your Lomography needs, from purchasing a camera to sharing your creativity.
The Not-So-Sharp Kids on the Block
Our first purchase was the Petzval 85mm 2.2 lens. This lens creates some amazing background blur when taking portraits. When shooting towards a sunset, this lens also produces some amazing lens flare! The magic we were after was finally there. Our portraits were becoming dreamier and more fine-art. It’s tricky to achieve much sharpness with this lens, but the soft focus which comes from it is what makes this lens so special. For sharper portraits without the swirly background, we will still pull out our Canon 85mm 1.2 lens.
Fine Art Photographers in Melbourne
This Petzval 85mm 2.2 Art Lens was so impressive that it made us want more. More blur, more swirly background – something which is hard to replicate in photoshop. Luckily for us, Lomography was producing all these wonderful lenses for us to play with. We promptly ordered a Petzval 58mm 1.9 and the Achromat 2.9 lens via Kickstarter. It was a long 3 month wait for these beauties to arrive as they were in the process of being manufactured. We were one of the first in Australia to receive a copy. They were worth the wait!
Location, Location, Location – Cherry Blossoms
For their first outing, we headed down to Red Hill Cherry Farm which promised an orchard full of blossoms for us to enjoy. The rain came down just as we arrived at the farm for our pre-booked time at the orchard. We had this trip planned a few weeks in advance and decided to head down there, rain or shine. After an approximate 30 minute wait, the rain eased just enough for us to venture into the orchard. It was quite a muddy trudge through the orchard, in white shoes and a white dress.
We noticed some ladies turning up in heels, probably hoping to get lovely photos of themselves amongst the blossoms! The rain continued to fall, making it very hard to shoot as these lenses are not water resistant! When it finally cleared, we spent some time shooting. The more we shot, the more we loved these lenses.
Creating Magic – Fine Art Wedding Photography
Let’s see when we can take these great lenses out to a wedding – we will need a bit more time for our shots. Maybe not ideal for a fast paced wedding but a wedding pre shoot will be ideal.
There’s so much learning to be done when using these lenses. Yes, it’s not as straight-forward as pointing the camera and shooting. Thought must be given to location, light and styling if you want to produce the best images possible. These lenses require some stable hands or a tripod if you want to achieve some sharpness. As mentioned before, it’s all about the dreamy photos that these lenses can produce. The photos which are produced by them are definitely of the fine art kind.
With a lot of practise, we’re going to make a lot of magical images which will leave a lasting memory. Hope our images inspire you to go a little arty with your photography. Maybe you want some magical images of yourself and your loved ones. Give us a call to chat about it.
Photographing couples is something we love to do, telling their love story in images for them to cherish. Each time they gaze upon their beautiful images, they will remember how they felt about each other at that time or their images may act as a reminder to keep the love flowing.
Photographing a couple is really relaxed and fun. We get lots of men who are anxious about posing for photos. The stress is quashed by allowing each couple to just be them! There will be some direction from us in what to do, but nothing which isn’t fun or out of your comfort zone! Take our lovely couple, Ben and Michelle, for example. These two were asked to be a couple who were in love. Some basic dancing skills came in handy (but not necessary), adding a point of difference to their love story photo shoot. The rest just came naturally.
Couples Photography in Melbourne
Ben and Michelle are a real couple. They’ve been together for a few years now and are proud parents of a parrot, a cat and a dog. They are both busy photographers and haven’t got any great photos of themselves together. Fortunately for them, they knew who to go to to rectify that!
It was a warm day in the middle of Autumn. Overcast weather at sunset gave us soft light to shoot with the sun making an appearance to light up Michelle’s amazing red hair! We chose parklands close by as it had large open spaces as well as some fallen tree trunks which made great photo scenes.
We also offer our couples styling advice. Michelle’s fair skin and blazing red hair looked fantastic in the black floral maxi dress. The dress was dramatic, moving as she strode along and twirled beautifully when dancing. For Ben, smart casual was the brief. You can’t go wrong with jeans and a white shirt. The brown suede shoes lifted the look.
