When Should You Avoid Ginger? Find out!

Hello All!!!!

Ginger is an answer to a lot of ailments like colds, cough, or digestive problems. However, it has cons also that are not known to many people. It may be hailed in Ayurveda but even this natural form of medication can be a health hazard for people who have certain health conditions. If you have any of the following conditions, you should stop eating ginger right away!

1) Underweight

Ginger is effective in weight loss and that is why many people drink ginger tea to slim down a bit. Ginger helps regulate digestive enzymes in the stomach and reduces appetite. This way you eat less and lose weight. However, what about those who are already way too lean? Those who are underweight with a low BMI can face a lot of issues when they eat ginger. They can face appetite loss, loss of hair, and deficiency of certain vitamins. Some women may even have irregular periods. Those of you who want to gain weight should always try to avoid ginger. I know these kinds of people are rather less in count but they do exist and we should think of them too, right?

2) Blood disorders

Next up are people with blood disorders. Have you heard about one disorder called Haemophilia? It is a rare blood disorder that prevents the blood from clotting. Though blood clots are risky at times they are still required for the well being of your body. When you lose the ability to clot, there can be a lot of bleeding even due to a minor cut or injury.

Ginger is recommended to those who want to improve their blood circulation but it is strict no-no for those who have Haemophilia as they can suffer from severe haemorrhage because of an increase in blood circulation. Ginger is also known to interact with certain life-saving medicines. So, it is better that you talk to your doctor.

3) Pregnancy

Consuming ginger helps pregnant women ease symptoms like weakness and morning sickness. However, the consumption should stop with the initial weeks of pregnancy as ginger is not to be consumed during the last trimester. The reason behind this is that it induces premature contractions and may cause early labour pains which are not good!

4) Individuals on medication

Ginger should be strictly avoided by those who are on medication for high blood pressure and diabetes. Anti-cougulant drugs, beta-blockers and insulin doses when combined with ginger can be harmful. Ginger is a blood thinner by nature and it helps lower blood pressure. These properties can interfere with the mentioned medicines.

How to find a replacement for ginger?

Now coming to food, a lot of people love eating spicy stuff. If you love the zingy flavour of ginger, you can try adding sweet peppers, red paprika and cayenne peppers instead of ginger to your food. These ingredients will definitely help you get the desired zing.

I hope you found this post on when and why you should avoid ginger useful!

Things To Understand Before Going Gluten Free

Hello All!!!

You will find a lot of people in your social circle who have gone gluten free. Some of them might be suffering from a medical ailment and must have been advised to stop consuming gluten. And then there is the other group of people who have given away gluten to clear their brain fog, to increase energy or to lose weight. Research does not have much to say about these claims. Therefore, if you are going gluten free, please read this post and find out what dieticians have to say.

1) What is the real reason to avoid gluten?

There is a need to avoid gluten only if you are gluten intolerant. Evidence related to gluten sensitivity is mixed as patients who say that they have this condition usually don’t display an immunological response to gluten. The real problem can be IBS or some sort of gastrointestinal disorder. It is therefore essential to talk to your doctor about it.

2) Why is it challenging to go gluten free?

It can be challenging to avoid gluten as many foods have traces of gluten in them. It does not stop with wheat, barley and rye. The list includes spices, soups in cans, vodka, beer, soya sauce, cold cuts, sausages, dairy-free yoghurts, ice-cream, and energy bars. Therefore, by choosing to go gluten free, your diet gets very restrictive.

3) Gluten-free alternatives may not be healthy

You must be aware that the grocery store has a lot of gluten-free alternatives to offer such as gluten-free breads, cookies and the like. Those with celiac disease might feel happy on spotting these but the harsh reality is that these foods are highly processed and have a lot of added sugar, salt and fat. It is better to opt for foods that are naturally gluten-free.

4) Going gluten free does not mean that you can’t eat grains

If you go gluten free, there are several grains that you can consume and they are,

  • Amaranth
  • Buckwheat
  • Corn
  • Millet
  • Rice/wild rice
  • Sorghum
  • Quinoa
  • Oats (check if they have been contaminated with wheat while getting processed)

All the above are great sources of fibre and should be a part of your diet.

5) Giving up gluten may lead to weight gain

Those who think that by giving up gluten you will lose weight, you may be wrong. There are chances of putting on weight. This is because avoiding your favourite foods will make you binge on them later. Another reason of weight gain is the increased intake of fat and protein and both of them lack fibre.

6) Avoiding gluten is not a cure for your ailment

Gluten will not cause inflammation if you are not gluten intolerant. This has nothing to do with your skin problems, tiredness or inability to lose weight.

7) Avoiding gluten might make you feel tired and miss out on nutrients

Going gluten free will make you feel tired as whole grains are a great source of energy and a diet that does not include them is not balanced. You may also have nutrient deficiencies.

If have to go gluten free, you must add gluten-free gains and foods rich in probiotics to your diet.

Take home message

A gluten-free diet is only for someone who has gluten intolerance.

Find out What to Eat on a Low Residue Diet!

Hello All!!

You must be aware of the fact that not all diets are meant for weight loss. One such diet is the low residue diet which is prescribed for a number of health conditions and illnesses. The low residue diet helps in reducing the burden on your bowels by letting them work in a relaxed manner.

The diet is usually meant for the acute stages of gastrointestinal illnesses such as the following:

  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Diverticulitis
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Ulcerative colitis

According to the diet, you have to consume food that can be easily and completely digested. In a low residue diet, the fibre intake is less than 10 to 15 g a day. The reason behind this is that food high in fibre content makes the digestive system work harder and leaves a lot of residue.

Foods that you can consume on a low residue diet

1) Dairy, eggs, oils and fats

You are allowed to consume not more than 2 cups of milk. Other dairy products have to be consumed in moderation. You can drink lactose-free milk, almond milk, rice and soya milk. Eggs are also allowed in this diet. When it comes to oils and fats, you can use vegetable oils and mayo.

2) Veggies and fruits

You should only eat cooked veggies without their peels or seeds. The same goes for fruits. You can consume vegetable and fruit juice without the pulp. The best fruits for you are ripe bananas, honeydew melons and cantaloupes.

3) Cereals

You need to fill your bowl with refined cereals that are cooked. They need to be made out of wheat, corn and rice. You need to stay away from bran, oatmeal, granola and the ones containing dried foods and nuts in them. Those on a low-residue diet should consume refined wheat and stick to white rice instead of brown rice.

4) Non-veg food

Meats that are allowed in the low residue diet are the tender cuts of poultry, pork, lamb, fish and beef. In the seafood category, it is advised to consume clams and oysters. Whenever you eat meat and fish, you should have it stewed, creamed, broiled or roasted.

5) Cheese

Cheese lovers need not worry as those on a low-residue diet can easily include cheese in their meals. You can go in for cheddar cheese, American cheese, jack or Swiss cheese. The list also includes cottage cheese and cream cheese.

6) Sweets and desserts

You can add plain puddings, custard, plain cakes, pies and cookies to your diet. The only thing you need to be careful about when on a low residue diet is that your dessert should not contain any nuts or fruits. Fruit juice lollies and sherbet are also allowed. This means that those with a sweet tooth can also follow this diet happily.

Other foods that are allowed in a low-residue diet

  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Spices
  • Aerated beverages
  • Strained soups
  • Honey
  • Jelly

There is a conflict of opinion when it comes to beverages like tea and coffee. While one medical centre says that coffee and tea should not be consumed, there are others that allow it. If you are not too sure about it, you can check with your doctor to find out if you can drink tea or coffee.

Bad Habits That Are Harming Your Health

Hello All!!

Are you aware that some habits of yours are harming your health in many ways? You may not realize but your habits can be bad and they can lead to health issues like heart diseases, sleeping disorders and stress.

Check out the 10 bad habits that are harming your health

1) Smoking and nicotine addiction

It may seem cool and swanky but smoking cigarettes is detrimental to health. It is well known that cigarette smoking causes cancer but not everyone knows that nicotine leads to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. If you smoke, you better kick the habit as soon as possible.

2) Skipping meals

Life is busy and everyone is on the go. This makes some people skip the important meals of the day such as breakfast or lunch every day. You should know that breakfast should not be skipped at any cost. If you do so, it is time to get rid of the habit.

3) Overeating

Overeating is as bad as skipping the important meals of the day. Those who are foodies and love to eat while watching TV or reading a book are in trouble as this habit will lead to obesity. If you don’t want to be called a couch potato, it is advised that you stop eating unnecessarily.

4) Not eating a balanced diet

Do you eat only what is tasty and interesting? Are your meals not well-balanced? This is not right. You need to consume a balanced diet that has carbs, fat, protein, along with minerals and vitamins.

5) Being inactive

If you want to have a healthy body as well as mind, you need to be physically active too as eating healthy alone won’t do. Physical inactivity can cause heart diseases and arthritis, obesity and cholesterol issues.

6) Skimping on sleep

In order to keep your sleep cycle normal, you have to sleep for a good 7 to 8 hours every night. You should not barter for sleep for anything on this planet! Improper sleep can lead to a lot of health issues.

7) Using gadgets before going to bed

If you want to get a relaxed sleep, you have to stop using mobiles and tabs just before going to bed. Chuck the habit of watching videos and movies just before falling asleep as it can disrupt your sleep. You can instead read a book (physical one!).

8) Too much consumption of alcohol

Excessive consumption of alcohol will make you get excited and that is not right when you are about to drive. Similarly, it also affects your sleep. Therefore, you need to consume alcohol within limits.

9) Taking too much stress

Stress causes fatigue, eating and sleeping disorders. Hence, you need to know how to handle stress so that it does not affect your health.

10) Not giving yourself some ‘Me time’

You need to take time off from the humdrum of life. Excess of work will only lead to psychological problems. Hence, it is advised that you pursue your hobbies.

Avoid the above bad habits and lead a healthy and fulfilling life!

Find Out Ablout The Two Types of Stress and Ways of Managing Them

Hello All!!!

‘De-stress’, we get to hear this term too often. Everyone wants to unwind and get rid of stress but you should be aware of the fact that not every stress is the same. Stress is seen most often in a negative light and while it does hamper our ability to eat properly and enjoy life, you should not be demonizing it. The fact is that stress can be classified into two categories and they are as follows:

  • Negative stress
  • Positive stress

Both of them affect our body but in two different ways. Here are both the types of stress and ways of managing them,

How does negative stress affect your brain?

Negative stress is the overwhelming kind of stress that arises when things are not in your control and are not taking you to the purpose of your life. This kind of a stress hampers your mind’s ability to function, your moods and decision making along with forcing a part of the brain to get into a frenzied state. Due to stress, the brain releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol that cause long-term and short-term damage to your health.

How does positive stress affect your brain?

In our lives, we set certain purposes or goals for ourselves and that brings in good stress. This is a kind of stress that has positive end results but there are always chances of opposition when you tread on the path. This kind of stress is within our control and gives us the liberty to set our goals.

Example of positive stress

A classic example of positive stress is taking up an educational course. At the end of it, new doors will get opened but the journey itself will be stressful at times as you have deadlines to meet and prepare for your exams.

The way positive stress affects your brain and hormones is completely different from negative stress. Positive stress makes your brain strong and improves neuro-connections and reduces inflammation. It can, in fact, be helpful in protecting your brain health in the long term.

Ways to handle stress better

First of all you need to learn to categorize your stress instead of dumping it all in one category. You need to work towards reducing negative stress and increase the positive one. Check out the 5 steps for stress management:

1) Identify the stress – Write it down and find out the cause of the stress.

2) Classify it – Find out if it is positive stress or negative stress

3) Choose your priorities – Decide on what is within your control and what is not. It will help you in getting things sorted out.

4) Reduce negative stress – Find out how negative stress can be alleviated. Is your work life uncomfortable or are you in a toxic relationship? Explore everything and try to remove the stress triggers.

5) Increase positive stress

You can add positive stress to your life by reading a book or learning new stuff every now and then. Challenge your mind and take your mind and body to the next level. Decide on your goals in life and create mini goals to reach there.

Take home message

Positive stress protects your brain and negative stress damages it. It might be difficult avoid negative stress but it can always be managed.

Hope you now you know the Two Types of Stress and Ways of Managing Them!

The favourite time pass of most people is to snack especially when they don’t have anything constructive to do. As a result, you end up piling on kilos! So, the next time you are bored, reach out for smart snacks that are both low in calories and filling!

1) Chopped veggies

Always be prepared as hunger can strike anytime! If you have already chopped veggies and stored them in the fridge, you are sorted. They are filling, low in calories and quite nutritious. If you have a dip along, you can munch on the veggies happily. This way you will spend your free time in getting healthy! Choose the veggies that you love the most and make a healthy salad out of it. Be careful with the dressing, it is better to make it on your own with lemon juice, some salt and a bit of pepper.

The best high-volume snack award goes to popcorn! However, you need to be careful while choosing your popcorn. You have to say no to ones that have loads of butter. Go in for home-popped popcorn as you will know what has been added to it. All you need to do is put corn kernels in a cooker, close the lid flip-side up and switch on the flame. Your pop corn will start popping! Sprinkle some salt and pepper and munch on your bowl of low calorie popcorn.

3) Fresh fruit

Fresh fruit has 3 amazing attributes – It’s natural, healthy and delicious. When you are hungry you can grab an apple, chop it and enjoy it with a dash of lime! Grapes and berries like raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are fun to eat. You can have litchis, mangoes, watermelon, muskmelon and many other kinds of fruits. There are so many fruits that I can fill the entire page with the names and still not finish the list! Fresh fruit are your go-to foods when you are craving something sweet!

If you don’t know what freeze-dried fruit is, don’t worry, it is mainly dehydrated fruit that doesn’t lose its shape. The only thing is that its moisture is removed. Dried fruit gets shriveled but freeze-dried fruit does not. Whenever hunger strikes, you can reach out to some crunchy freeze-dried fruits. They are yummy and perfect when you want to treat yourself with something healthy. So, please do have some freeze-dried fruit at home.

5) Sprout chaat

Keep sprouted moong dal in your fridge so that whenever you feeling like munching on something you can quickly chop tomatoes, onions and add some sprouts. You can add salt, pepper and chaat masala as per your liking. This is a cool way to ensure that you don’t gobble down too many calories and also get the needed nutrients in the right amount.

Now do you know what to eat when you are bored?

Ways To Shrink Pores

Hello All!!!

Do you have open pores on your face? You must be obviously worried about them! However, don’t go in for skin care products claiming to shrink your pores as it is a big fat lie! The size of your pores is based on genes but there is something you can do to reduce their appearance.

Skin pores increase in size as you get older or when filled with impurities. Here is what you need to do to make the pores appear smaller in size. And don’t worry as it is all natural!

1) Clay masks

Clay masks are well known for their ability to pull out toxins and other harmful stuff from your skin. You should definitely apply a clay mask once in a week. What can be better than good old multani mitti or fuller’s earth? So, mom and dadi were right when they asked you to apply a multani mitti face pack every week!

Once the clay dries up naturally on your skin, you can remoisten it with a warm washcloth. This way the clay will not dry your skin out. You can add a bit of chandan (sandalwood) and turmeric to the face pack too but please ensure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients. You can even do a patch test before going ahead.

2) Fruit acid masks

Fruit acids masks are also helpful in renewing your skin and getting rid of impurities that lead to open pores. However, they can be a costly affair. So, here is how you can make fruit acid masks all by yourself from natural ingredients at home.

You need fruit acid so it is better to choose fruits that have more acid like citrus fruits and berries. Take half a strawberry, one slice of tomato, two pieces of grapes and mash them all in a ceramic bowl. To that add one teaspoon of milk powder and some water. Apply this to your face and wash it off after 30 seconds as it can irritate skin otherwise. Make sure that you do a patch test before applying it on your face and not exceed 30 seconds as this mask has fruit acids.

3) Lymph drainage

With regular lymph drainage, you skin will turn clear, bright and free of blackheads. When facial circulation is not proper, it can lead to clogged pores and not many know about it. You should give yourself a facial massage at least once or twice a week for proper lymph drainage. It is free of cost and will take only a few minutes of your time.

4) Switch to products that don’t clog pores

Coconut oil and thick balms are a no-no for certain skin types as they are comedogenic or in simple terms ‘pore-clogging’. Search for skincare products that say that they are light and non-comedogenic.

Follow the above habits to shrink pores and they will appear as if they have reduced in size even when they actually haven’t. Remove makeup before going to bed and let your skin breathe!

Vitamin Supplements Not To Be Consumed Without Consulting The Doctor

Hello All!!!

Time and again you are reminded of consuming healthy and nutrient rich foods so that your body gets enough vitamins and minerals. There is no doubt about the fact that your body needs vitamins to function right. However, consuming vitamin supplements without consulting the doctor is not advisable. Vitamin supplements when consumed in excess and without prescription can do harm than good.

Here are 5 vitamin supplements not to be consumed unless and until prescribed by a doctor.

1) Vitamin A

This vitamin is a powerful antioxidant that has a pivotal role in maintaining healthy vision and in the upkeep of neurological health. It has been found that an excess consumption of vitamin A can lead to lung cancer in those who smoke. Apart from that, excess of vitamin A can damage the liver. The right thing to do is to add natural sources of the vitamin in your diet. You need to include carrots, sweet potatoes and other tropical fruits in your meals.

2) Vitamin B6

To maintain a healthy energy level and improve immunity you need vitamin B6. However, overdoing it can be detrimental. Consuming more than 100 mg of it in a day can result in nerve damage, nausea, skin lesions, heartburn and sun sensitivity. Instead of gobbling down vitamin B6 pills, you should include pistachios, potatoes and avocado in your diet. Even fish is a great source of this vitamin.

3) Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a well known and powerful antioxidant just like vitamin A. It helps in boosting one’s immunity and is found in abundance in fruits and veggies. However, an excess consumption can lead to kidney stones. So, instead of vitamin C pills you can consume vitamin C-rich fruits like oranges, tomatoes, kiwi, strawberries and papayas.

4) Vitamin E

According to research form a prestigious University, the risk of death is higher in those who consume supplements of vitamin E. There is also an increased risk of heart failure and cancer. The best way out is to consume foods rich in the vitamin and they include spinach, pumpkins and almonds.

5) Multivitamin supplements

Multivitamins are most often over publicized by pharmaceutical companies. Even you might feel that by just popping in one pill you can meet all your vitamin needs but this is not true! According to studies, the tall claims made by pharma companies are never met by their product. It is just like throwing the money down the drain. Supplementing with too much of vitamins can adversely affect your health. So, the next time you see an advertisement of a multivitamin supplement claiming to prevent diseases, and make you feel energetic, don’t believe it.

Your doctor always knows better, so consume vitamin supplements only when the doctor prescribes it. Stick to natural foods for your vitamin needs. It is best advised that you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables to get the maximum amount of vitamins naturally.
