Hey, it’s me, Karena!

Three years ago today, our family packed up all of our belongings and relocated to our new home in Stony Plain, Alberta.  It also happens to be when I really started to get this small business off the ground!  I had officially (for tax purposes) started my business January 1st of 2016.  However, we moved here May 3rd and this is what I consider to be the anniversary of Everlast Photography!  So, as of today, Everlast Photography is 3 years old! Woohoo!

I have learned and grown so much over the last three years. And, I have met some of the most wonderful clients! I am so grateful for each and every client I have met and who has chosen me to capture their family’s most special moments! And, a big thank you to all for supporting my small business and in-turn, our family!

In the past three years, my business has grown and so has my art. I can see, with each portrait session, small changes and small improvements that have accumulated into big changes and big improvements! I have invested in my education multiple times in an effort to advance my skills and to be able of offer my wonderful clients my best. I am also fortunate that I’ve been able to invest is some of the best equipment so that I can make sure every photograph I produce is of the highest quality. I’ve spent hours and hours (and a few dollars) searching out the world’s best printers and craftsmen so that I am confident I am offering the best prints possible to my clients. I am proud of where I’ve taken this small business in the last three years.

I have also made the greatest friends! The Edmonton photography community has been so open and welcoming. I have gained some real honest friends that I can count on and rely on and who can rely on me when needed. It’s such a great feeling! I remember being apprehensive about moving to Parkland County because I really didn’t know many people. I had one friend in Edmonton and my Mother and Father-in-Law lived in Stony Plain. So, I count myself lucky that this quiet and introverted mom of two was able to make connections and build friendships in a relatively short amount of time. I am so lucky to have met the right people at the right time and to be welcomed into their circles.

Since we relocated, we have moved once more and settled in Spruce Grove. We found our perfect home here and are very happy to raise our family here! This community is small but busy and very connected. I love being in a smaller sized community but also being so close to Edmonton. It’s a short drive to the mall or to my favourite fabric store - the best of both worlds! I do photograph in my home studio a lot, but I still offer studio sessions in Edmonton and St. Albert. So, it’s easy for me (and clients) to choose the best location.

As I look back, I am really happy with where we’ve come from and where we are now, as a family. And, I am really happy with the direction my business is going. I am so grateful every day that I get to call this my job! And, I know that wouldn’t be possible without the love and support of everyone around me. Thank you for supporting my business! Even just reading this blog post or liking a photo on social media is a big support for small businesses like mine and it means the world to me that you care!

I can’t wait to see where Everlast Photography is three years from now!

Karena

Melia’s mom had contacted me a couple months before Melia’s first birthday to book her milestone portraits. I was SO excited as I had photographed their family for Melia’s newborn portraits and their images turned out so lovely! I have a few absolute favourites from that session you can check out here (including a beautiful wedding gown photo)!

She knew exactly what she wanted - a tea party themed portrait session. Melia’s mom had a beautiful tea set ready to go. We talked back and forth on her outfit styling for the session and I think what was selected turned out beautifully! I love the vintage style of the white dress and am absolutely smitten with the blue floral print of the other!

As you can image, it can be challenging to direct a one year old for this style of portraits. After only a few moments, it is time to wander and explore the park! But, we had a few tricks up our sleeves and were able to achieve these beautiful images and more for her session!

I am so grateful to have been able to photograph Melia for this incredible first year milestone and to have provided these images there she and her family can look back on years from now.

If you’d like to schedule your own milestone session for your child, please contact me and we can start planning all of the details! Feel free to call 587-357-9738.

Late this summer, a friend (who happens to also be a photographer) and I got together to photograph our sons in a vintage inspired lifestyle photo session. We chose a beautiful location local to Edmonton - Lake Chickakoo.

My friend, Jenny, and I went shopping weeks in advance to try to find special clothing for our boys (first stop, WEM!). We shared text messages back and forth with our prop finds. I’ll have to give credit to Jenny for most of the work though! She knew exactly where to look!

Eventually, the day came and met up at lake and headed down the trail to our spot. If you’ve been to this area, you know it can be busy with hikers, runners, dog lovers, and even horseback riders! It wasn’t too busy this day, but the boys were happy to entertain those passing by.

We sure had our hands full photographing these two toddlers! We each had double duty with photographing as well as mothering! I’m sure you can imagine us running back and forth and trying to grab their attention, if even just for a moment. Luckily, we also had an extra helping hand from Jenny’s husband, Tom. Thank you Tom!

The boys were so sweet though! They were so happy to play with one another, help each other, share and explore together. It was heartwarming to be able to capture these moments, as a photographer, but more-so as a mother. I know my little boy is growing up fast these days, and it makes me so happy to have captured some of his curiosity, love for play and outdoors, and his kind and loving heart.

I know, not long from now, I’ll look back on these photos with so much love and warmth, remembering when he was three years old. These will surely be some of my lifetime favourite photographs!

If you’d like to see Jenny’s beautiful work, please visit here.

I have recently began accepting more sessions in my clients’ homes. These sessions are referred to as “Lifestyle” sessions by photographers, but I’ve heard others refer to them as documentary, journalistic, un-posed, and intimate. All of these terms describe these relaxed, relationship focused sessions very well! I am so happy I’ve been able to take on this style of work going forward. It definitely speaks to my heart and I love that the images showcase baby in their home.

As you can see below, there is some light posing, but I like refer to this as more of a guided look. Rather than me posing everyone completely, as I do in studio; I see how you do things naturally with little direction and then I might adjust a hand placement or angle slightly for better lighting. I am also able to achieve similar looks to my studio portraits, as shown in the black and white photo beneath. This is am image I love to capture in studio. It totally connects the family and is sooooo sweet!! But, in this session, I was able to recreate this same image using the beautiful family’s window!

We also make sure to incorporate sentimental items from the home and can also use home furnishings to add to our session! In this case, Mom and Dad had a gorgeous duvet cover that I loved and we used this to frame their little one, creating a wall-worthy portrait!

Being in the comfort of your own home allows for a lot of baby snuggles and it also allows for intimate nursing time with babe. If comfortable, I am happy to capture nursing moments for families as this is such an important and special stage with little ones. As you can see, this girl was so happy and content with Mom and Dad throughout our one hour session.

Thank you to my amazing clients for allowing me to photograph their growing family in their beautiful home! I loved every minute of this session and am happy to have provided these photographs for your family!!

If you’re interested in a session with Everlast Photography, I’d be happy to chat with you. Let’s get the conversation started! Please contact me here.

Introducing baby Lara! She is such a sweetheart! I had a great time designing this extra simple newborn portrait session with Lara’s mom. She wanted greys and whites for this session with minimal textures or accessories. I love the way this style turned out for her newborn session.

It’s so hard to choose a favourite, but I really love the images with Mom and Dad! What about you?

If you’d like to chat about customizing your own newborn portrait session, feel free to contact me here.

Months ago, I put out a call to work with someone who had a personal story they wanted to be told through photography. It was open to anyone. That call put me in touch with this beautiful soul, Martine. I won’t share all of the details of her story here, because it is personal. But, I hope that the image above speaks to its viewers. I hope this photograph translates into a story about her life that is interpreted in an honest way.

I will share that Martine is wearing her custom wedding gown on the left. She had it made for her through a boutique store she found on Etsy (but you can find her shop here). The outfit on the right is more representative on Martine’s earlier years and her style at that time.

The remaining photographs shared here are others we captured during the session. I hope you enjoy them all! And, I hope to be able to offer another portrait session like this in the coming year.

Happy New Year!

I had the pleasure of photographing this family of three near their home in downtown Edmonton. They had wanted to capture their family portraits in an urban style with different neighbourhood locations that they frequent as a family.

We planned the session near sunset so we could get some beautiful golden light but also early enough that we didn’t interrupt their son’s sleep schedule. We all know how important that is!

First we stopped at a nearby waterpark and had some fun there playing and watching the puppies run. Then we moved along and found a colourful backdrop for photos with mom and dad. Afterward, we walked to another treed area close by and then found yet another beautiful mural to use for portraits! Loved the colours and textures in that one especially!

This family was so much fun to work with and I had a great time finding different, new-to-me spots in the city to use as our backdrop. I loved getting little giggles out of their sweet little boy and I loved the connection between mom and dad! It was a really nice evening to be photographing.

If you’d like to book your family portraits, feel free to contact me or call 587-357-9738 to chat.

Portrait sessions like this one with Mom and Baby really make my heart sing!! Leaving the studio props set aside and just focusing on these two and their connection with a simple backdrop is all that is really needed for timeless, classic portraits.

These photos show off all of the love and beauty of this mommy-daughter bond. It was my absolute pleasure to photograph this session and create these photographs for this family to have. I really am so grateful every day that I am able to create art like this. And, I am so thankful that my clients choose to hang art in their homes that features their family and their most special moments.

It was such a wonderful time photographing these two expectant parents for their maternity session! They had told me they wanted their session to be outdoors and I knew a location we could use that would be perfect. We met at Lake Chickakoo which is just west of Edmonton. I love this location because it is versatile and provides several different backdrops for clients’ sessions. Even though it is a fairly popular place for runners and families, we can always find great spots for portraits.

I love the soft colours Brooke and Dalton chose to wear for their session and I am in love with the lace robe and floral crown mama brought too! These colours and textures really make these portraits pop! And, the beautiful light that nature provided us that day really made for some beautiful shots as well.

If you’re interested in planning your own custom portraits with me, contact me today through the contact page or feel free to call me at 587-357-9738.
