We are delighted to announce the launch of Epicor iScala 3.2 , taking the software a step further on its evolutionary path. In upgrading iScala, we have been driven by three key ambitions, namely to:

  • Extend global compliance
  • Expand core experiences
  • New mobile capabilities

So, what does this mean in practice? Users who upgrade to iScala 3.2 will enjoy, among other enhancements:

  • An even better user experience, with changes that include a home screen you can customise, enhanced search facilities and the ability to use several windows in a single logon
  • Easier partial and automated journal posting
  • A range of extended accounting capabilities, such as tax exemption in advanced invoices and specific national reporting formats
  • Extended facilities for global business, such as scope to set the currency exchange rate date and save exchange rates in orders, even better support for reporting requirements in specific territories
  • Better warehouse and materials management capabilities
  • Extended mobile functionality; multiple users on a single device, ability to suspend work and save temporary changes, mobile warehouse management, sales and customer service enhancements
  • Support for GDPR, security, and audits
The launch of this upgrade is particularly timely, given the arrival of some major changes to business practice, notably the GDPR becoming enforceable in Europe in 2018. The latest version also acknowledges key drivers in modern business that include the continuing growth of mobile, the requirement to optimise cross-border provision and transactions, and the need to quickly and easily search and access specific information in an increasingly complex environment. As current users know, iScala is a well-established, constantly upgraded, highly efficient and wide-ranging enterprise resource planning (ERP) software solution. It collates important information from all areas of a business, in all disciplines and territories, and synthesises them in a way that makes business easier and more streamlined, and optimises your company's growth potential.

Having been the ERP software of choice for many businesses since the 1990s, iScala is constantly updated so that it remains fit to serve the needs of modern businesses.

If you would like to take advantage of this upgrade, please speak to us  as soon as possible, and maximise the many benefits of your iScala software package.

As retailers move, almost en masse, to implement omnichannel functionality (e.g., ship to home/return to store, online order/in-store pickup, anytime/anywhere access to inventory) in an effort to effectively meet the rising demands of customers, the movement has significant implications for distributors. A recent study by global consultant Oliver Wyman comments on the phenomenon, particularly the impact of eCommerce:

The online channel is becoming increasingly important in B2B transactions: while it represents a $700 billion business in the U.S. today, it is set to top $1.2 trillion by 2020. More important, Amazon and Amazon-like offerings have led B2B customers to expect the same experience from their distributors as when shopping online. B2B customers are expecting more and more to be able to discover, buy, receive, and return products seamlessly across multiple channels: in short, they want to fully benefit from the omnichannel experience.
For distributors, this creates challenges and opportunities. While product manufacturers and online distributors can bypass distributors and go direct to customers, traditional distributors can leverage their unique strength in the supply chain to grow, and to reinvent their businesses and relationships, in order to become platforms or marketplaces for customers.

While challenging to traditional distribution operations, this market shift to a customer-centric model represents an opportunity for distributors. A recent study by Morar Consulting shows that high-growth distributors are focusing on the "external opportunities" that omnichannel is opening up, and that these opportunities are driven through digital properties such as eCommerce and mobile sales tools. Among other important findings in that research:

  • Seventy percent of distributors saw the ability to adapt to evolving customer needs as critical for business growth.
  • High-growth companies are more than two times likely than low-growth companies to see strategic planning for growth as important.
  • Eighty-six percent of high-growth companies believe they are well placed to respond to growth opportunities compared to only 43 percent of low-growth companies. The top consideration distributors cited as important for overcoming business growth challenges: better technology.

The Wyman study recommends two steps that distributors should take to survive and thrive in the omnichannel world: one, use agile approaches to IT and business; two, focus on areas that help drive customer-centric operations. On the second point, they call out four key areas to concentrate on:

  • Change how you think about designing your network and fulfilling orders.
  • Consider a variety of options for last mile and delivery.
  • Aggressively integrate upstream and downstream to lower total cost in the value chain.
  • Build and partner for the right technology capabilities.

All these steps point to a cultural element as well: the ability to embrace change, not resist it. The Morar study showed that high-growth companies were 55 percent more likely than low-growth companies to prefer constant innovation to business stability. This is one reason high-growth organizations invest in solutions such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems that provide the visibility and agility to quickly respond to changing market demands and constantly rising customer expectations in the omnichannel ecosystem. To become a high-growth company, distributors need to invest in technologies that boost productivity and increase their teams’ capacity, allowing them to scale while maintaining cost control.

Aberdeen points distributors towards three requirements of a supply chain optimized for the omnichannel approach to market:

  • Clean up inventory data sets to gain actionable insight into customer preferences that affect your supply chain.
  • Bolster your packing and shipping capabilities to meet demand for minimal delivery times.
  • Adopt measurement tools to track improvements in finished goods turns, carrying costs, and service levels.

These, too, call for investing in a responsive IT infrastructure.

How We Can Help
For distributors adjusting to the omnichannel ecosystem—and looking to leverage their participation in it to competitive advantage—Epicor has a number of tools that can be of real benefit:
Epicor Commerce Connect (ECC) provides the tools necessary to deliver a rich customer experience across your organization’s omnichannel, from quote to fulfillment and beyond. Benefits include:

  • Fully integrated ERP and eCommerce
  • A single database to simplify platform management
  • Around-the-clock service to all trading partners with real-time access to account and product information

Further, the Epicor ERP platform supports mobile and cloud developments, while Epicor Social Enterprise (ESE) heralds a new generation of business collaboration, and leverages the benefits of Microsoft Windows 10. By providing a platform that encourages the sharing and sourcing of information, ESE is designed to change corporate cultures and drive efficiency and innovation on a whole new scale.

As noted in a Forbes column, "From the customer’s perspective, there is only a single, technology-enabled channel that brings together all touchpoints. While channel conflict is still one of marketers’ top concerns, it is little more than an illusion for companies who have achieved levels of success with their omnichannel digital transformation initiatives."

As your organization moves toward that transformation, we can help speed and ease your journey.

Simplicity seems to be the holy grail of enterprise software these days. It’s no wonder with the rising levels of complexity in the global, digital economy. Streamlining and automation of business processes modeled by enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems should reduce that complexity and yet the ever-present demand for more – more features, more options, more access, more mobility, more technology – conspire against the desire for simplicity. A lot of software vendors today go to market with the message of "simple" but few (if any) can rival Epicor in its quest to provide ease of use, ease of upgrading, ease of access, ease of deployment, and ease of learning… while also becoming a company that is increasingly easy to do business with.

Yes, the Epicor mission is "ease of everything" and it has made very significant progress on its journey, and has plans to do much more.

Easy To Use
According to Joe Cowan, president and CEO of Epicor, "What we’ve got to do is look at everything the customer does and understand how to make it simpler to do." When it comes to making the software itself easy to use, Mint Jutras has long recognized that "ease of use" means different things to different people. So every year we ask the survey participants of our annual Enterprise Solution Studies to select what they feel are the top three most important aspects of ease of use. The aggregated answers tell us only a part of the story. For the past several years we’ve started comparing answers across three different “generations." While all generations agree on some aspects, in others, we find some significant differences (Figure 1), making the job of delivering "easy to use" all that much more challenging.
Efficiency (minimizing the time to complete tasks) is clearly a priority for all. But the different generations have different views on how to achieve that goal:

  • Baby Boomers value intuitive navigation, while it would appear that Millennials simply take it for granted. They grew up playing electronic games and using mobile apps for which a user manual would be a foreign concept.
  • Baby Boomers like to operate from a central point of command, while Millennials are more adept at jumping around.
  • Millenials like "pretty," as evidenced by placing more value on a visually appealing user interface. And they want it their way – more highly customizable. Baby Boomers apparently are more willing to sacrifice form for function.
  • And Gen X, with the largest representation in our sample, appear to be (appropriately enough) somewhere in between.

So where do Epicor customers fit in terms of perceptions of ease of use? The priorities of all respondents (its prospects) and its customers are both important to Epicor decision-making. We were fortunate to have almost 80 Epicor customers participate in our survey this year. Clearly Epicor customers lean more toward the practical aspect of user experience (Figure 2). Epicor customers place a higher value on the efficiency factors: minimizing time to complete tasks, easily and naturally. While intuitive navigation is right up near the top of the list, the emphasis on simply getting the job done places a very high priority on fit and function, which requires continuous innovation.

Features and functions are very important in order to make a solution easy to use without invasive customizations that create barriers to further innovation. But don’t forget the second most important aspect of ease of use (to Epicor customers) was intuitive navigation. For this, you need a modern user interface.

The different Epicor products are at different stages of development, but one thing you can be sure of is that Epicor is developing new user experiences (UX). The next release (10.2) of Epicor ERP for example will include a new role-based and personalized "Home Page." It will have a whole new look that is clean and bright, but more importantly, will make decision makers better informed and more productive. It will feature active tiles that will present key metrics that change as you watch - live. You can configure your own "data discovery” through a variety of different presentation styles including ordinary charts, and also maps of just about anything ranging from your own warehouse to maps of the world.

Say you are looking for inventory on hand. You can look at it in normal bar or line chart form in aggregate, or you can see it on a map of your warehouse. And this is not just static data. You can look at it as of a point in time, looking back or looking forward. By dragging your mouse across the date, you see it in a format that appears like time-lapse photography. Need more detail? Click on a bin for details.

To really appreciate this new UX, you indeed need to experience it. Ask for a demo and press your Epicor representative for estimated delivery for the product you either run now or are considering. We think you will be impressed. We think it will make your life easier. But you need to be the judge.

In today’s economy no business is immune to the opportunities, impacts, and challenges of business beyond geographic boundaries. Epicor products are used in 100+ countries around the world where we have been enabling our customers to do business for 45 years. We know how hard compliance is globally with legislation changing constantly, so no matter how widely your business is distributed, our global business management tools are designed to meet the most complex of regulations.

In my previous article , I spoke about compliance and what this means. Compliance is hard and it is getting tougher, but our goal is to demystify this and make it simpler.

We have totally re-thought the creation and management of global solutions by replacing the traditional concept of ERP design with a series of interlocking global engines that allow the configuration of how and where transactions are posted, how tax is calculated, how currency is handled, and how ERP data is stored.

Just looking at the United States, there were over 16,000 different tax changes in 2016. This is further exacerbated when you consider that the number of global tax changes in 2016 was nearer double that number.

Reporting legislation is constantly evolving and many tax authorities around the world are beginning to require comprehensive data submissions on a regular basis. There is also an increasing requirement for companies to provide real-time reporting of transactions in addition to existing periodic submissions. A growing number of countries are adopting comprehensive electronic reporting and eInvoicing requirements.

Adoption of eInvoicing has gone from 59 countries in 2011 expected to reach over 100 countries by the end of 2017. This is expected to affect over 14 million companies in Europe alone.

The introduction of a goods and services tax (GST) regime in India not only saw changes to the way tax is calculated but also how this is reported. India has now introduced nine new electronic reports as part of the GSTR1 report set. Poland introduced their own variation of the single audit file for taxation (SAF-T) reports earlier this year, requiring companies to submit five new electronic reports known locally as JPK files.

The proliferation of electronic reporting around the globe continues to put pressure on organizations and their ERP systems at an exponential rate. We understand the challenges in remaining compliant and what it takes to meet these ever changing reporting regulations.

Both Epicor ERP and iScala now feature powerful electronic compliance engines allowing us, our partners, and even our customers, to develop solutions supporting complex, government mandated electronic and printed formats for reporting of fiscal compliance easily without needing to change application code.

The electronic compliance engine and associated capabilities allow content to be delivered dynamically as and when needed. This means that Epicor ERP and iScala users are ready for the challenges compliance may through up today, tomorrow or in the future.

In recent years, cloud-based applications have exploded in availability, acceptance, and use.

The value and potential of cloud-based applications is being realized by businesses around the world. IT spending is undergoing a major shift from traditional sources, such as direct server and software license purchases, into cloud computing. The amount of money spent on cloud services in 2016 grew 25% over 2015 to $148 billion, and that will grow to $216 billion in the year 2020, according to a recent report released by Gartner.

The cloud opens up new capabilities and accelerates innovation. Subscribers demand increased levels of service, scalability, and financial agility. The cloud brings an opportunity for companies to focus on driving their business forward, knowing that their enterprise applications are always on, always accessible, and always up to date.

Unrivalled deployment choice
Our approach to the cloud is unique. We offer three distinct cloud deployment options for Epicor ERP, including multi-tenancy, single tenancy, and a game-changing dedicated tenancy model that offers much of the cost savings of multi-tenancy with the isolation and flexibility of single tenancy. We also offer the exact same applications on premises. This provides our customers with unrivalled levels of choice and flexibility on a platform that is designed for their industry, making us unique.

The Epicor ERP multitenant cloud offering provides economy of scale, good for the cost-conscious. Our single-tenant cloud deployment is designed for companies that demand very high levels of isolation and customization capabilities. At Epicor Insights 2017 in Nashville, Epicor announced  a new and unique offering called "Dedicated Tenancy." This approach is 100% cloud, offering the cost savings and security of multi-tenancy, combined with the freedom and flexibility of single-tenancy for other elements.

Dedicated tenant cloud provides customers with an isolated database on shared infrastructure. This allows higher levels of advanced customization and subscribers have the ability to defer new version and release updates for a limited time meaning they have increased control. This allows subscribers unrivalled levels of flexibility without forsaking the benefits of the cloud.

Dedicated tenancy was launched for both Epicor ERP and Prophet 21. These are purpose-built, cloud-ready solutions. These platforms continue to leverage our deep industry experience  while helping customers focus on their core competencies and grow their businesses profitably.

Using the cloud as a technology enabler
Along with the unique deployment choice offerings, we leverage federated cloud services to help existing customers move to the latest release of Epicor ERP deployed in the cloud or on-premises.

How ERP Can Help Fuel Your Growth

Business growth is a complex path that's both full of promise and fraught with challenge. Recent global research commissioned by Epicor and conducted by MORAR Consulting shows that while growth is a top objective that manufacturers expect to achieve, they're concerned about their ability to manage it. They know that they need to grow in order to keep up with customer and market demands and stay ahead of their competitors. However, they also know that growth presents serious risks that many organizations aren't prepared to handle.

Meanwhile, the research also shows that the right technology is a key enabler of growth. So the question that should be on every business owner's mind is this: if you plan to grow or want to prepare for unplanned growth (as every organization would be wise to do), are you equipped with the appropriate technology to succeed?

Leveraging the power of ERP solutions to help you grow

Epicor iScala Wins Gold in Best in Biz Awards 2018 International

I'm delighted to announce that our business management software solution, Epicor iScala, has been named the gold winner in the Enterprise Product of the Year, Software category at this year's Best in Biz Awards. These awards claim to be 'the only independent global business awards programme judged each year by prominent editors and reporters from top-tier publications from around the world'.

I'm delighted to announce that our business management software solution, Epicor iScala, has been named the gold winner in the Enterprise Product of the Year, Software category at this year's Best in Biz Awards. These awards claim to be 'the only independent global business awards programme judged each year by prominent editors and reporters from top-tier publications from around the world'.

iScala was commended for helping businesses tackle growth in the context of an ever-changing global compliance landscape.  Some pretty major changes to the latest version of iScala in the last year have meant that customers worldwide are being supported to innovate, grow their business, and improve efficiency.

That's no mean feat. Research shows that last year 39% of global businesses found growth challenging, a figure that has since risen further to 45%.  So, growth is becoming harder than ever for businesses to achieve, and this is even more the case in the context of ever-changing global compliance requirements.

Key challenges that iScala has been recognised for helping its customers overcome include:

Growth requires access to business data
Each iScala user now has a home screen tailored to their specific needs and business functions, giving users easy access to the information they need every day.

A lack of innovation can hold businesses back
For businesses that want to innovate, the latest version underpins new ways of working with its mobile and automation capabilities. For example, the mobile warehouse app (available on Android and iOS) automates and simplifies key day-to-day operations, such as checking barcodes and recording stock-taking activities from a mobile device.

Everyday tasks take up too much time
iScala helps businesses improve efficiency and reduce time spent on every day. For example, it helps businesses save crucial financial management time by copying general ledger transactions, thereby limiting the number of repetitive entries finance teams otherwise have to make during book-entry processes.  Key functional data entry programmes are also consolidated into one single collapsible form so that users can quickly look up the supplier/customer or inventory/asset details of every order.

Meeting multiple local compliance requirements
New capabilities in the iScala Electronic Compliance Platform help businesses deliver country-specific reporting and filing, and structured output reports. The platform also simplifies cross-currency supplier payments, and assists with relevant customer declaration information where, for example, import VAT needs to be reported to the authorities.

Developed by the experts here at Epicor, iScala helps customers implement effective governance, mitigate risk, and improve controls in order to help them grow their businesses.

i  The research was conducted by Morar Consulting on behalf of Epicor Software Corporation in November 2017 and November 2016. The research questioned around 2,500 business decision makers and employees in businesses across the globe, about their growth performance in the last 12 months.

Epicor solutions are designed around the unique operational needs of manufacturers and are available in the cloud or on premises. Customers can better manage complexity and focus on core growth activities.

Unlocking the true value of ERP

The term enterprise resource planning (ERP) has always been synonymous with efficiency, clarity and a smarter way of working. But in today's on-demand environment, businesses need to unlock the true value of their ERP platform in order to build competitiveness and continue to grow.

The term enterprise resource planning (ERP) has always been synonymous with efficiency, clarity and a smarter way of working. But in today's on-demand environment, businesses need to unlock the true value of their ERP platform in order to build competitiveness and continue to grow.

What started as a transaction-based tool designed to integrate and automate back office processes and disparate silos of information, ERP is today the backbone of successful organizations. But many companies are still just scratching the surface of what it can offer. With quick, informed decisions now at the heart of business growth, it is more important than ever for organizations to make the right decisions first time. This can only be done by having access to the right information, in the right way at the right time. ERP can help by turning mountains of business data into insightful information.

As our own research recently discovered, despite these technological advances many employees are still being asked to make uninformed decisions on a regular basis, having to rely on gut feel. Now, we believe that gut feel will always play a part in making sound decisions but actionable insight can amplify confidence and accelerate action. Having an ERP solution which can uncover and provide this information is therefore no longer a tactical consideration, but a strategic necessity when building an agile and responsive business.

New technologies such as social and mobile are continuing to unlock new sources of value that can be realised with ERP. In addition to the traditional benefits gained from process efficiency and the adoption of best practices, ERP is now enabling and enhancing decision making and collaboration across the extended supply chain. Embracing these new technologies and ways of communicating is the fastest way for organizations to become more agile and increasingly competitive.

To ensure that all businesses are able to unlock these new sources of value, ERP vendors such as us, must achieve two objectives. Firstly, to keep up with innovations and drive incremental advances to our solutions, but more importantly to re-define what ERP is or should be and how it meets the need of the business now and in the future. It's this second objective that takes the industry on a new journey, one that seeks to fundamentally shift the future position of ERP within the organization.

Trailblazing UK merchants use BisTrack to power their businesses

The BisTrack-using merchants identified by BMJ as 'trailblazers' turnover between £21 and £152 million. They employ between 366 and 2,300 staff and include general merchant operations as well as timber and plumbing specialists. What they do have in common is a commitment to maximising the use of their ERP solution and to get the very best value out of it.

Builders Merchants Journal (BMJ) recently published its annual 'Trailblazers' supplement, a dedicated analysis of trading trends among the top merchant businesses in the UK.

This year's supplement analysed the performance of 42 merchants and produced a series of league tables including turnover, gross profit, gross margin, turnover growth, stockturn, sales per head and return on capital. Not surprisingly it was the national groups who topped the tables for turnover and gross profit. But, by multiplying three of the ratios together - year on year sales growth, stockturn and operating margin - the BMJ team create their 'BMJ Index' based on the ratios they feel are the most important and which produces a league table of 'overall competitiveness'. Interestingly when performance is analysed in this way it's the independents that top the table!

Could it be a coincidence that nearly half of the independent merchants included in the BMJ Index this year use Epicor BisTrack to power their business? We don't think so. All of these 'trailblazing' merchants took the decision to implement BisTrack only after very careful consideration about what they wanted from an ERP system and undertaking comparisons with other solutions on the market. Some have been using BisTrack since the software was first developed for the UK market 12 years ago. Many have contributed to the development of new modules and played a truly pioneering role as the software has evolved into what it is today - a powerful but truly scalable and highly flexible solution.

Bart Murphy, Operations Manager at MP Moran (no. 3 in the BMJ Index and 14 places ahead of the nearest national!), said that BisTrack gives the company total visibility and allows them to monitor and report on everything in the system. Mark Atkinson, the IT director at JT Atkinson, (no. 14 in the Index) said BisTrack makes an impact on everything they do and, five years after implementation, he has no doubt he made the right ERP choice.
