Bentota – Sun and the Sand

Down 60-65 km from Colombo along the southward coastline lies tis beautiful beach infested city. Clusters of tourist lodges amidst star graded hotels afford the visitors ample choice of staying that are pampered by many water-sport cum leisure activities. To add lustre to the long stretch of a sandy shore is the lagoon and a river that runs almost parallel to the sea with only a thin strip of land separating them at one point. Thus the golden sandy beach is well exploited as a travellers’ haven. Being somewhere in the centre between the Metro Colombo and the southern city of Gale, the location virtually becomes the ideal midway transit to break journey even for a few hours.

The entire beach are could be safe for swimming and other recreation such as wind-surfing, diving, boating etc. They are tailored for entire families and not only for the daring. The Bentota River that ends as a Lagoon provide these thrills and that’s what makes the destination a much sought for tourists spot.  Talking about scuba diving, this is one of the locations where a trained team of PADI (Professional Association of Trained Instructors) are in operation. They coach the visitors in this activity to make their stay proactive in water. Ever engaged in deep-sea fishing? If not, here it is for an adventurous ride in the calm waters off shore.

Boat rides too are a popular attraction as they take the visitors along the river and into the lagoon and back. Scenic ambience with coconut palms and clear blue sky above aided by a calm breeze enhance the experience that would linger for years in one’s mind. But then, what is a tour without sumptuous delicious meals? Being near the sea, Bentota revellers do find the seafood extravaganza at every stop be it a small restaurant or a super grade hotel. And they are well monitored for quality, healthy servings. Ayurvedic services are also available in many places in the whereabouts of Bentota and this completes a well-deserved holiday or leisure itinerary.

Not to be outdone by the Sun and the Sand, the lagoon is smart enough to offer its thrills in the form of small cruiser rides. Having come along the river, the travellers are treated to many small islets within the lagoon to view mangroves that host many aquatic birds such as herons and cormorants. Kingfishers with delightful colours too inhabit them while amphibians such as monitors and crocodiles mooch around. Beneath the water you could see large and long roots of trees. Cruises could be for between 3 to 5 hours to get the maximum.

Bentota is also reckoned for Turtle Hatcheries which are meant for conserving these endangered species and their eggs having salvaged from the fishermen who inadvertently catch them with fishes. Once weaned they are released back into the ocean and they virtually return to the beach for to lay their offspring, it is discovered. Hence, it is a great service towards ecology by the Bentota folk. It is thus noted that Bentota is no ordinary coastal city but much more for a tourist.

Most popular place in Sri Lanka – Galle

This southern port city in Sri Lanka has an indelible historical significance just like the other major cities on the Island. Just about 72 miles along the coast downwards from Colombo, Galle evokes an interest on the colonial occupation of yore especially the Dutch period. Whether architecture, culture or religion the foreign reign though not to be relished in today’s mind-set, it did leave behind traits and legacies that bear a mutual respect and pride both by the foreigners as well as the locals.
One of the prime features in this port city is the Dutch Fort overlooking the Ocean and perched on a higher ground. Within this as the name implies are the buildings for many purposes of the Hollanders’ architecture and structural patterns even after almost 375 years. Some of them are of the English style houses and verandas to remind us about the colonial import. They are preserved not as antique remnants but utilized for many purposes even now. The lighthouse in its enclosure has been the beacon for many a ship that pass through this tip as there were no other guiding lights for the vessels in the open sea. Well-fortified, the ramification served as a safe and secure protective area during wars.

Beside this, the Galle harbour is a strategic berthing port for ships that sail across from east to west and vice versa, generally the cargo vessels. Fishery activities also thrive alongside. However, there are many such fisherman’s hyperactivity are to be found along the coastline from Galle in both directions towards other southern cities as well as up towards Colombo. And all these are now popular spots for the tourists.
Beach resorts are plenty and they cater to various activities. During the last decade or so much focus has been on the Dolphin and Whale watching form Mirissa (a few km form Galle). There are certain months where you can view in close proximity, these sea creatures of delight. Launches and specially designed and equipped boats will transport the visitors to make the visit enriching. Similarly, for aqua sports such as scuba diving snorkelling or windsurfing Hikkaduwa beach (up towards Colombo) will satiate any such who are inclined to indulge.
Apart, Galle also preserves many religious and culturally important sites. Temples and museums would take a traveller through the timeline of history and its significant landmarks. Many eminent scholars and statesmen of Sri Lanka were born here. History also elicits how the colonial races and the local inhabitants lived and ruled in harmony without eradicating any of the cherished values. Tours to wildlife sanctuaries and nature reserves can be organized form this town as an extension segment.
Galle also came to limelight due to the Cricked Stadium built for International matches. The stadium was affected somewhat by the devastating Tsunami 12 years ago but since then, has regained its prominence. There is no dearth for tourists’ lodges and star hotels in the region as the demand is such and is expected to soar higher in the imminent future. Do be passionate about the local dishes along with the other International cuisine while touring to this beautiful southern port city.

Ella

Could be the tiniest hotspot for tourism in Sri Lanka that woos them providing a minuscule pleasure for the eyes and leisure for the being wherever you stay and wherever you turn therefrom. The local dialect derivative of the name simply means waterfall but the place is far beyond it in that the natural environs near and far from it is absolutely mesmerizing! The gaps between mountains afar and in close proximity are much talked about as the splendor view with the expanse of the sky as the backdrop blue and grey colour ranges amidst these truly astound the beholders. As it is so, many places of stays for travellers are perched on strategic locations.

Ella is en route to Badulla, another important city up the hills but much lower than Nuwara Eliya and only a hundred feet above that of Kandy in elevation. It is situated between Bandarawela, a calm and green town in the plateau and Badulla. Climatically it is much warmer than the Tea Kingdom but yet the green surrounding, hills and waterfalls always exude with pleasant coolness. Generally the English refer to their dual weather change, hot n the day and cold in the night during summer. Obviously beautiful, the town though small, is the point of origin for many curious excursions particularly for treks up on mountain slopes.

Two such popular spots are the Bambaragala peak and the Ravana falls. While the former is climbed for the gorgeous 3600 view atop, one of the best in Sri Lanka. But on a hot day it is better to wear safety gear to combat the heat. The latter is supposed to be the widest waterfall in the Island but it is famed because of the legend that Ravana kept Sita, Ram’s wife after he abducted her, according to the Hindu myth namely Ramayana. Hence, the caves where she was hidden supposedly are known as named Ravana Ella Caves. Myths and Legends have made Sri Lankan mountains, caves, rivers and temples rather famous and historically important. The others are the Little Adam’s Peak and the Ella Rock, which too entice a trekker. Adjoining waterfalls are never to be missed for refreshing baths!

Then there is another fascinating piece of engineering skills by the British i.e. the Demodera Rail loop, a few km form Ella towards Badulla. Folktale in the area says that the idea birthed from the Turban of a tea estate supervisor, the twist and turn that is. An aerial view could explain why it is such a mastery. The train route comes over a tunnel that is burrowed thorough the mountain, and enters the tunnel underneath with an oval shaped track. Needless to say that the journey during those few minutes will be rather slow-paced while the passengers are treated with a breath-taking awe. What’s more? It moves on a 9-arched bridge! All these excitement is only 218 km form Colombo on a direct train journey to Badulla and could take only half-a-day.

Apart, Ella is more popular for backpackers as the lodges and motels are nestled in between trekking spots. The area is being developed further for such tourism with adequate supply of boarding conveniences and culinary delights. Rainfall could be higher during the latter part of the year and if it does not bother, Ella is a year-around ideal tourist destination among the hills.
