Do you protect your skin from the sun all year?

Or just when you are skiing, cruising or lazing on the beach soaking up the rays?

Protect against sun ageing and skin cancer

“Relaxing and uplifting as the warm sun is, unprotected exposure causes your skin to age rapidly and can trigger skin cancer,” explains Clinic Founder and anti-ageing skin expert Lorraine Scrivener.

Shielding your face, neck and hands from the harmful rays of the sun every day of the year is one of the most effective ways to preserve your skin’s youthful look.

With our damp climate it’s easy to be dismissive of skin cancer, yet The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) confirm skin cancer continues to rise in the UK with over 100,000 people newly diagnosed with the disease every year.

Malignant Melanoma, the most deadly form of the disease, is the fastest rising common cancer and causes over 2,000 deaths in the UK each year. Most cases of melanoma are curable if detected early enough, but if diagnosis is delayed and the cancer spreads then your chances of surviving are greatly reduced.

Finding sun protection that sits comfortably with your make up without being shiny and oily can be a challenge. “I’m never without Brush on Block (B.O.B for short!). It’s a broad spectrum SPF 30 natural, mineral powder sunscreen with no chemical sunscreen ingredients and its own self-dispensing brush. Being translucent and non-greasy it’s easy to wear under makeup or reapply over makeup. BOB’s safe for children and sensitive skin, is cruelty-free and vegan-friendly and it doesn’t have any parabens.”

Reduce the ageing effects of the sun on your skin

These are my top tips for being out in the sun:

1. Avoid the midday sun

If possible, avoid being out in the sun between 11am and 3pm.

2. SPF 30 minimum protection for anti-ageing

Wear SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen. For ease, nothing beats Colorescience Loose Mineral Sunscreen – my favourite pop-in-your-bag product. It’s a powder sunscreen which I liberally brush on (even over my make-up) to give a hint of sun-kissed colour plus SPF 30-50 protection. A light compact, it’s perfect for skiing, sports or when you’re relaxing outside. It also comes recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

3. Reapply sun protection regularly

Slather on plenty of suncream SPF 30+ before venturing out in the sun, and reapply assiduously every two hours, and particularly after swimming. AlumierMD Sheer Hydration SPF 40  is a silky, sheer physical sunscreen packed with free-radical-quenching antioxidants, is Paraben and Sulfate free and not tested on animals. Ideal for a languid day poolside.

4. Free UV app to avoid harmful rays

Check the UV index which shows the amount of UV radiation. It is usually shown on weather forecasts or you can download the World UV App here for free. Developed by the BAD and the Met Office, it is a free app which gives live UV ratings anywhere in the world, ensuring you and your family know when to protect yourself against harmful levels.

5. A protection cover-up

Cover yourself up with a T-shirt, hat or pair of 100% UV protection sunglasses, keep well hydrated and your skin moisturised.

6. Ease sunburn

Try to avoid burning the skin. If you do calm the skin with a damp towel for 15 minutes, or ideally take a cool shower or bath. Pat dry (don’t rub) with a towel to minimise irritation. Moisturise your skin frequently, drink plenty of water and resist the temptation to pop any blisters as this can damage the skin and lead to scarring.

7. Sunbeds seriously damage your skin

Avoid sun beds at all costs if you want your skin to retain a youthful glow.

“Everyone is different so book an in-depth consultation on preventing sun damage or to discuss treatment options to reduce the effects of the sun. These consultations are free so why not book a time that suits you at either of our London clinics in Kensington or Wimbledon?

I run through the advanced skin care treatments options and benefits available at Eden Skin Clinics in this earlier article,” says Lorraine.

Look out for these skin cancer indicators

The BAD advises you to keep an eye out for these possible signs:

  • A growth with a pearly rim surrounding a central crater, a bit like an upturned volcano
  • A mole that is crusty or scabbed, or red, itchy or inflamed
  • A mole that has got bigger and changed shape over time

You can find more detailed information on what to look for and self-examination here. Even though not all will be dangerous (and most aren’t), if you spot anything that looks unusual or out of the ordinary then have it checked out by a doctor.

Sunscreen protection know-how

“I use SPF 30 or higher on my face, neck and hands every day of the year and recommend clients to do the same,” advises Lorraine.

The labelling can be confusing on sun protection skin products so it pays to read it carefully. SPF is the Sun Protection Factor against UVB radiation. Quite simply the higher the number, the longer you can stay in the sun without burning. So, if you’re wearing SPF 30, you can stay in the sun 30 times longer than you could without any protection.

You also need to protect your skin against UVA rays. These are present even on cloudy days and age the skin by causing wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and some forms of skin cancer. The UVA rating is usually indicated by a number of stars on the bottle or a circle with UVA written inside it. Look for UVA rating of four or five stars for full protection.

Protect your hair when catching the rays

When protecting against the sun it’s easy to overlook our scalp and hair, explains Eleanor, Manager at TONI&GUY in Gloucester Road, Kensington.

“Protection isn’t just for those dreamy days on sun-drenched beaches. Daily exposure to sunshine in the UK can play havoc with your hair leaving it dry, brittle and damaged. Coloured hair is particularly vulnerable, with the sun causing colour fade to unprotected hair.

“For optimum protection and minimal damage cover up with a hat or scarf,” says Eleanor. “Not always a desirable option I know, so I advise my clients to use especially formulated sun protection products to guard against damaging UV rays. All label.m shampoos, conditioners and the Protein Spray contain our unique EnviroShield complex – a luxurious combination of Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, Barbados Cherry and powerful UV filters – to optimise shine and protect against heat styling, colour fade and UV rays.

In celebration of World Smile Day in 2018 we pledged to donate £50 to Operation Smile for each Dermapen micro-needling treatment we carried out in October and November.

Operation Smile is a fabulous local Wimbledon charity which provides thousands of safe surgeries each year for those born with cleft lip, cleft palate or other facial deformities in developing countries.

Boosting confidence and improving lives

“Feeling confident about your appearance makes everyone feel more positive,” explains Lorraine. “I know because my working life is spent helping people to improve their self-confidence through their appearance. So it really struck a chord when I learnt about the vital impact Wimbledon-based charity, Operation Smile, makes to people’s appearance and thus their lives.

“Talking to my team it was clear we all felt passionate about fundraising and our clients supported us brilliantly throughout. I’m thrilled to say we smashed our target raising enough money to fund 7 smile operations, so a huge personal thank you to everyone involved.

“And we’re not leaving it here. We intend to support, fundraise and work closely with such this amazing charity.”

Why Operation Smile?

Meet Faustina who lives in Ghana, a country with a deeply rooted stigma towards cleft lips.

For 17 years, Faustina has lived with the burden of her unrepaired cleft lip. “I can’t go anywhere because of my cleft,” she said. “I can’t attend school. I just spend my days helping my mother at home.”

When Faustina was born, doctors told her Father that surgery could fix her lip. However, the procedure couldn’t be performed at their district hospital, and it would be too expensive for him to afford.

Operation Smile, and their supporters, made it possible for Faustina to have the life-changing surgery. Now she can look forward to the future…

When she saw her reflection for the first time after surgery, her eyes were filled with tears of joy when she gazed at her face in the mirror.

Sarah Kosciukiewicz, Corporate Partnerships Manager at Operation Smile, said, “We’re very grateful for the generous support from Lorraine and Eden Skin Clinic who exceeded their fundraising target to help seven more children like Faustina receive the free surgery they deserve so they are not left to live their life in social isolation. The funds raised by Eden Skin Clinic will go directly towards helping to heal seven smiles for children like Faustina.”

Brilliant to be involved

“I’ve been a client of Eden Skin Clinic for some 2 years and have a range of skin treatments with them.

“My visits are always magical, the staff are so helpful and the welcome warm. I always look forward to my Dermapen micro-needling appointments which leave me feeling ‘wowtastic’ without feeling plastic! The treatments have tightened my skin, reduced my acne and pigmentations, and left my skin looking clear, radiant and smooth.

“So I loved it when Lorraine and her team supported Operation Smile with her Dermapen treatments – what an awesome cause – helping children build their self-confidence and feel-good factor by restoring their super sunshine smile.

“I understand Eden Skin Clinic have raised £1100, so proud of you ladies, well done!”

To celebrate #WorldSmileDay (5 October) Eden Skin Clinic is delighted to support Operation Smile – a fabulous Wimbledon based charity which provides thousands of safe surgeries each year for those born with cleft lip, cleft palate or other facial deformities in developing countries.

How we’re helping…

Each Operation Smile operation can cost £150 and takes just 45 minutes to surgically repair a child’s cleft lip.

So, for every Dermapen Micro-needling treatment we carry out in October and November, we’ll donate £50 to Operation Smile.

Our aim is to raise at least £1,000 which would help heal 6 smiles.

“Faustina is a typical example of someone who’s born disadvantaged because of her cleft condition,” Operation Smile volunteer surgeon Opoku said. “You can imagine how much stigmatization she’s had to deal with in the past, so for people like that, really, I’m grateful that we were able to reach her.”

When she saw her reflection for the first time after surgery, her eyes were filled with tears of joy when she gazed at her face in the mirror.

Clinic founder and leading skincare expert Lorraine Scrivener gives readers her tips on how to anti-age your body in the latest edition of Health & Wellbeing magazine.

Most of us tend to look after our face yet it’s easy to forget about our body. But from your head to your toes sneaky signs of aging can creep up anywhere. So look at the bigger picture and treat the whole body…

Cellulite

Bad news says Health & Wellbeing magazine. Cellulite gets worse with age. As oestrogen levels dip, circulation slows and this reduces new collagen production, which in turn decreases the breakdown of connective tissue.

The good news is that unsightly orange peel can be prevented and reduced if you know how.

Lorraine’s fix

First, eat well advises clinic-founder Lorraine. Processed and fatty foods, such as cheese, processed meats and foods, containing high amounts of salts and sugars, can all contribute to cellulite. Pay particular attention to nutritional information on food and avoid cellulite-causing troublemakers.

Secondly, she recommends body brushing to increase circulation to problem areas and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Sagging skin

Sagging skin around the knees and neck are a common sign of ageing. Sagging is caused by decreasing levels of collagen and elastin (which keep skin taut).

The result? Skin is a little less plump than it used to be. But, says Lorraine, Health & Wellbeing readers needn’t accept the laws of gravity, as there is a way to prevent skin from drooping.

Lorraine’s fix

It’s easy to neglect trouble zones. Apply all of your normal products (think: day creams and lotions) to your neck in exactly the same way as you would your entire body says Lorraine.

Knees can get very dry and dehydrated, so she suggests using a good scrub plus leg exercises to firm the thigh muscles, helping to lift the skin. Squats, lunges and deadlifts are ideal for toning the upper legs.

Looking for a little help? Both our Venus Freeze and Dermapen Micro-needling treatments can tighten skin in these often problematic areas.

Spider veins

True to their name, spider veins look like a web of red wiggly veins that can spread across the legs as you age. Also known as thread veins they are caused by dilated superficial blood vessels that sit close to the skin – and it could stop you from wearing the lovely summer skirt you’ve just bought!

Lorraine’s fix

Think ahead is her advice. Unfortunately there aren’t any at-home treatments, so prevent more spider veins from appearing by avoiding harsh scrubs and wipes. Lorraine also suggests avoiding food and drink that will make the skin excessively flush, such as spicy foods and alcohol.

Want to go pro? Lorraine tells readers that professional treatments do work and include advanced electrolysis, laser or intense pulse light. Learn more here.

Fine lines and wrinkles

The skin’s elasticity starts to reduce during our 30s. However, the rate at which we get fine lines and wrinkles can be decreased.

Lorraine’s fix

It’s never too late to try and improve or prevent fine lines says Lorraine. While there can be a genetic predisposition to this skin problem (so look to your parents for signs of early ageing), environmental factors such as sun exposure and the products you use on your skin can also play a role. Lorraine recommends readers use products containing retinal, or vitamin A.

“Retinals are scientifically proven to improve fine lines and wrinkles. Introduce a low percentage of retinal into your routine and gradually increase it once your skin has adjusted.”leading skincare specialist Lorraine Scrivener

Women’s Health magazine recently asked Eden Skin Clinic founder, Lorraine Scrivener, for her advice on turning 30.

The first signs of ageing with teenage spots

Once you hit 30 your hormone levels begin to reduce, and collagen and elastin production slows down so you see the first signs of sagging and ageing.  Fine lines appear around your eyes and frown lines become more noticeable. Lorraine explains, “Cell turnover becomes slower during your 30s, so your expression lines won’t bounce back quite like they did.”

Skin can also irritatingly become too oily says Lorraine, “As a result of slower cell turnover, your skin’s ability to fight inflammation is reduced, which could lead to breakouts or in some cases adult acne”.

Ditch the face wipes

If you loved the convenience of removing makeup with a face wipe in your 20s you need to change your beauty routine now – there’s a real difference between skincare in your 30s and 20s.

“Wipes are too abrasive for your skin in your thirties”, explains Lorraine. “They might also contain alcohol, to remove makeup quickly, which can disturb your skin’s natural barrier function, leading to sensitivity and dehydration”.

62% of women say their skin is reactive, irritable and intolerant, so choosing the right products is essential to maintain healthy skin.

La Roche Posay research

Micellar water

Lorraine recommends to Women Health readers that they use micellar water instead for cleansing in the morning.

“As you sleep, your skin goes through a renewal process, eliminating toxins and debris. This doesn’t warrant a whole face wash, but it does warrant a once over with a cotton pad and micellar water. Micelle molecules act as magnets, picking up stubborn sebum.”

Essential night skincare

A night cream is essential in your 30s to support your skin through its regeneration process and make it more efficient says Lorraine. “Start incorporating Vitamin A (also known as Retinol) into your night time ritual. This helps to stimulate collagen production and thicken the skin, helping to maintain its plumpness, as will peptides.”

Use a specialist eye cream

If you’re not using an eye cream, start now is Lorraine’s advice.  “The skin around the eye is the most sensitive on your face, so will be one of the first areas to show signs of ageing. Eye creams are specifically designed for this delicate area so a separate one is needed. “

Lorraine’s top products for skincare in your 30s:

  • Nano Eye Lift by Agera – designed specifically for the delicate eye area to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and help promote collagen production.
  • Ultimate Retinol Rejuvenator 35 by Agera – scientifically proven epidermal proliferation and skin smoothing agent to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Brush on Block – a convenient mineral sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection easy application with no greasy mess this hyo-allergenic product is perfect for reapplication on the go.

All available to purchase at Eden Skin Clinic.
