The Many Types and Forms of Licorice

Licorice can be found in many forms. Licorice root is available as an extract, powder, chewable tablets, or even in its natural root form. There are also multiple types of licorice root found all over the world. Glycyrrhiza uralensis is a variety of licorice native to Eastern Asia. For many of us, the winter brings cracked knuckles and hopelessly dry skin. Now that the weather has officially turned towards summer, our skin faces an entirely different set of challenges to stay healthy and beautiful.

There are several simple and easy ways to care for your skin during the hot summer months. Today, we will review some of these tips and discuss how you can implement them into your daily skincare routine.

1. The Importance of Sunscreen for Skin Health

There is no one tip more important for summer skin care than proper sun protection. The American Cancer Society recommends the following to stay safe year round:

  • Cover skin when possible. The best defense against harmful UV rays is avoiding direct exposure by wearing protective clothing, headwear, and sunglasses.
  • Stay in the shade when possible. This is particularly true in the summer around midday, when sun exposure is most dangerous.
  • Stay away from artificial tanning methods such as tanning beds or sunlamps.

Panax ginseng, more commonly known as ginseng, is a perennial plant indigenous to many regions of East Asia. North American ginseng, also most commonly referred to simply as ginseng, is indigenous to North America, but is also grown domestically in China.

These two plants have been used as ingredients in traditional medicines for millennia by both ancient Chinese and by Native Americans. Today, ginseng is recognized the world over for its many health benefits as a dietary supplement as a topical ingredient.

History of Ginseng Cultivation

The history of ginseng cultivation is really a story of two cultures: North American and Siberian. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has sought out ginseng for thousands of years due to its many uses in the diet, as a medicine, and as a topical. Native Americans also used ginseng for medical purposes as it grew abundantly. It was not until the 1700s that the Western world truly began seeing botanical supplements such as ginseng as marketable.

Ginseng is now widely cultivated all over the world. Ginseng farmers generally fall into one of four categories:

  • Wild ginseng collectors: This type of collection is heavily regulated to protect natural ginseng populations.
  • Wild-simulated ginseng growers: a type of farming in which ginseng plants are grown in a “simulated” wild environment.
  • Woods cultivated ginseng growers: farms which are located in “natural” locations.
  • Cultivated ginseng growers: ginseng grown using modern farming methods.
Wild Ginseng vs. Domesticated Ginseng

Wild and domesticated ginseng plants are quite different — resulting in two distinct end products. According to American Ginseng Pharm, China is now the world’s leading producer of domesticated ginseng.

Wild ginseng roots show visible growth rings, longer roots, and have a more striking color. They also have a greater variance in appearance, extending in all different directions as they naturally grow. Wild ginseng roots are smaller and more nutrient rich.

Cultivated ginseng roots are lighter in color, but larger in size. They have a more uniform appearance with fewer visible growth rings. Wild-simulated ginseng often falls in between these two categories, with growers trying to emulate the natural environment and growth patterns of wild ginseng as much as possible.

Anti-aging skincare products have long been the holy grail of the beauty industry. After all, there is no stopping father time — and with time comes the aging process. Unfortunately, the majority of anti-aging products on the market are either ineffective or limited in their efficacy. This ineffectiveness is primarily due to the ingredients used and the methods by which they are manufactured.

This is not to say that all anti-aging products are ineffective. The fact remains that a flooded market still contains high-quality anti-aging skincare products if you know where to look.

How do Anti-Aging Products Work?

To understand how anti-aging products work, we must first define what “anti-aging” means. The traditional watermark for anti-aging is to make skin look younger by reducing wrinkles, tightening loose skin, smoothing out discolorations, reducing erythema (redness of the skin) and achieving a more even texture. Needless to say, that is a lot of work for a single product.

Anti-aging products are generally effective at treating one or two of these issues, if any. A recent study concluded that an inexpensive moisturizer did better at making skin appear visibly younger than an eye cream which cost nearly 15 times the price. This goes to show that expensive does not equal effective when it comes to skincare.

Most anti-aging serums and creams are ineffective due to a lack of potent active ingredients which directly impact the ways in which skin shows its age. As we will discuss below — merely having active ingredients on the label does not make a strong anti-aging product. The concentration of active ingredients, source of active ingredients, and method of manufacture all play a key role.

Acne breakouts are one of the top skincare concerns for many of us. Waking up to the morning to a new pimple or red skin is never a good feeling.

Breakouts are caused by skin becoming clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and/or other irritants. The root cause of acne can be widespread, but the methods by which we can prevent breakouts remain largely the same.

So how can we avoid breakouts? Today, we will explore six (6) ways to keep skin healthy all while avoiding the dreaded acne breakout.

Daily Cleansing Routine for Acne Free Skin

At a high level, acne is caused by clogged hair follicles. Oil, dirt, and dead skin cells can accumulate on the skin, causing irritation, which leads to accumulation of bacteria and inflammation. The best and most direct solution for acne is to implement a daily cleansing routine. WebMD recommends washing the skin one (1) to two (2) times daily — no more.

Without cleansing skin daily, your skin may become oily and clogged with irritants, pollutions or just dead skin. Cleansing the skin more than twice daily can dry skin out and/or cause greater irritation. Exfoliating products such as charcoal sponges should be used with great care as acne prone skin may be sensitive.

Simple Skincare Regimens Reduce Breakout Risks

The modern mindset is often to throw as many solutions as possible towards a problem. When it comes to avoiding breakouts, this might include several different acne products, cleansers, and more. The fact remains that a simple skincare routine is best for your health.

Different skincare products often have multiple active ingredients. These active ingredients may interact with one another in a negative way, effectively increasing your chance for breakouts, and weakening of the skin barrier. UV Rays Can Damage Skin and Cause Breakouts

Prolonged sun exposure can cause skin to become irritated and inflamed. When combined with a propensity to breakout, this can cause a handful of skin related issues. Many common acne products also may increase sun sensitivity. Many acne products contains salicylic acid can triggers burning or stinging sensation in a sunburnt skin.

Acne sufferers may be tempted to avoid sunscreen use due to its potential to make skin oily. This is not an advisable decision. Instead, always apply broad spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from more serious health issues such as melanoma. Try looking for non-comedogenic products to avoid breakouts.

If you are taking acne medication, you may want to speak to your doctor about sun safety. He or she might recommend staying out of the sun or a certain type of sunscreen to keep your skin protected and clear of breakouts.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient form of healing and medicinal practice which dates back an estimated 2,500 years. TCM is based around the concept of qi, which is the essential energy existing within all living things.

There are millions upon millions of people who continue to use TCM for holistic health to this day. In our modern world based on technology and research, this begs the question: how does Traditional Chinese Medicine stack up?

Today, we will be defining Traditional Chinese Medicine, reviewing some research on the efficacy of TCM practices, discussing when and who should consider TCM, and how to choose the best TCM practitioners and products.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

As mentioned in the introduction, TCM in centered on treating the body’s qi, or life energy. Many adherents believe that qi flows through the human body and is responsible for their emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.



It is important to understand that trying to define TCM is a difficult task. Ancient Chinese Medicine has been evolving and branching off for millennia. Ask any two TCM practitioners the same question, and you might get two different answers.

The key difference in philosophy between Western medicine and TCM is symptom treatment vs. holistic approach to health. Western medicine is primarily focused on diagnosis and treatment. TCM takes a more holistic approach, “treating” individuals’ overall health in an effort to prevent illnesses in the first place.

Scientific Research on TCM Efficacy

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, there are three well-researched areas of Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Chinese herbal remedies are one of the pillars of TCM. Countless herbs and herbal blends have been studied “for many medical problems, including stroke, heart disease, mental disorders, and respiratory diseases (such as bronchitis and the common cold).” Unfortunately, low quality testing has yielded inconclusive results in this area. Users should be careful to only trust reputable sources of TCM herbal products.

Chinese acupuncture has shown more concrete results. Studies suggest that professionally administered acupuncture may be effective in reducing pain and lowering the frequency, duration, and intensity of certain types of headaches.

Tai Chi is an ancient martial art which has developed into a low impact, stress relieving activity. Much like yoga, Tai Chi has been proven to reduce stress, improve balance, reduce pain, and several other benefits.

Should I Consider Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Most medical professionals agree that TCM is generally safe when administered by an experienced professional. However, it is certainly not for everyone. Consider asking the following questions before seeing a TCM specialist:

  • Do I have a diagnosed acute illness or injury? Individuals with serious, acute physical ailments like cancer or a broken bone should opt for traditional, western medicine for their primary care.
  • Are my symptoms lingering without any definitive cause? TCM is ideal for nagging chronic problems, particularly when traditional medicine has failed. Western medicine has even shifted towards TCM ideals for prevention, stress reduction, and holistic methodologies. One major reason that TCM works well for chronic medical issues is that TCM adopts a holistic approach.
  • Am I looking to improve overall health or deal with a specific issue? Holistic health has a litany of benefits which can dramatically improve our lives. TCM is great for preventing future illnesses by improving overall health.
  • Is my health compromised due to a current condition? This can include women who are pregnant, the elderly, young children, or those who are currently being treated for other conditions. These individuals should at a minimum consult with their physician before considering TCM.
Not all TCM Practices are Equally Effective

Just as there are good doctors and bad doctors, good lawyers and bad lawyers, there are certainly good TCM practitioners and bad TCM practitioners. In reality, most TCM professionals will fall somewhere in between. We recommend finding a Traditional Chinese Medical practitioner who is experienced, reputable, and preferably has a modern medical background as well.

It is important to understand that “non-traditional” treatments do not go through the same FDA approvals as most modern medical treatments. That is why it is vital to find a reputable practice before jumping into TCM.

The same goes for East Asian products such as beauty products. There are thousands of products on the market which are either ineffective or unsafe for use. On the flip side, there are plenty of TCM skincare and beauty products which have undergone rigorous testing to deliver high quality, affordable products which are safe and easy to use.
