When it comes to acne, I’m no stranger. I struggled with acne in high school, university, and Naturopathic Medical school. Acne affects people of all ages. Approximately 80% of people are affected by acne at some point in their lifetime. It develops when sebum and dead skin cells block hair follicles. Like me, most acne sufferers are willing to try anything. I used Proactiv for a long time (along with antibiotics and other acne medications). While these treatments helped for a short while, the acne always came back (with a vengeance). I knew I was masking a deeper underlying issue, so eventually I went to see a Naturopathic Doctor. My ND put me on a cleanse, cleaned up my diet, and helped re-balance my gut flora with probiotics. Cleaning up my diet was the hardest. I repeatedly heard from dermatologists that acne had nothing to do with food. Boy were they wrong! My acne had EVERYTHING to do with what I was eating. A diet high in sugar and fast food can trigger gut inflammation, which can lead to skin inflammation. I had inflammation because I was living off sugary treats, burgers, fries, and Diet Coke. My diet was awful. […]

If you’re thinking about doing a detox, I hope you know that there is ZERO scientific evidence supporting detox. Scientists often say … “There’s no such thing as ‘detoxing’. In medical terms, it’s a nonsense.” Yes, you read that correctly. IT’S A NONSENSE. For those of you who don’t know me, I carry over 20 years of experience in the health and fitness industry and I’m so proud to say that I’m a detox advocate, even though many scientists claim ‘detoxing’ is a hoax. In just a few seconds, I’m going to tell you why toxins are a very real problem and 5 simple ways to reduce toxins. Even though there aren’t any double-blind, placebo controlled studies on herbal detoxing, there are PLENTY (in fact hundreds) of papers supporting the use of cleansing herbs. Many health problems we commonly see today are actually due to toxicity in the body, such as; Weight Gain Acne and Eczema Fatigue Digestive Disorders (e.g. gas/bloating/constipation) Poor Concentration or Brain Fog And there are many more symptoms which I didn’t list. As you can see, toxins make us sick. Concerned? You should be. Toxins are everywhere and an enormous amount of chemicals have been released […]

The holidays are here and many of us have been overindulging in foods that we love. From mom’s famous potatoes to desserts loaded with sugar, saying ‘no thanks’ is unlikely this time of year. Overindulging in foods that are not part of your typical diet can lead to uncomfortable symptoms like smelly gas. Although we look forward to the holidays, many of us dread the heavy feeling in our gut post-holiday feasts. The good news is that there are natural supplements to support healthier digestion and reduce smelly gas. Today I’m sharing my top 3 supplements to keep your gut happy this Christmas season. Smelly Gas Supplement #1 – Probiotic While many people know that taking probiotics is a good idea with antibiotics, few realize how amazing these gut bugs can be for digestion. Consider taking a probiotic supplement to help with the digestion of food and reduce smelly gas. Probiotic supplements come in a range of doses from 1 billion up to 100 billion. Since this time of year, our digestive system needs all the help it can get, consider for a high potency probiotic supplement that has 50 billion (or more) live bacteria per capsule. Probiotics help maintain healthy gut […]

Detox teas are hot! And why wouldn’t they be? In today’s fast-paced world, we are all seeking easy ways to detox. Gone are the days of coffee enemas, lemonade fasts, and chalky shakes. Detoxing must fit into a busy lifestyle. Otherwise, people just won’t cleanse. Although detox teas are on trend, they are not new. They’ve been around since ancient times. With just two cups of tea per day — consumed in the morning and evening — detox teas claim to reduce bloating, combat fatigue, and help with weight loss. Are detox teas as good as they seem? Are they even safe? Celebrity endorsements, user testimonials, and astonishing before/after photos posted all over the Internet are convincing. These endorsements have spiked great interest in this fresh way of detoxing. But can tea really do all of this? There’s no denying that tea offers a multitude of health benefits. The polyphenols found in green tea offer a host of positive benefits. They can address fatty liver and assist with weight loss.1 Let’s take a look at common ingredients found in detox teas. Evening blends often contain ingredients such as ginger, peppermint, and fennel. These ease digestion and help minimize belly bloat. A morning cup typically […]

So you’ve been trying to eat well and find healthier options. You’re cooking at home and side stepping the sodium, fat, and calories found in many restaurant foods. But let’s face it – you’re tired of cutting veggies and toiling away over the stove. You want to go out and enjoy a tasty meal that somebody else cooks for you! And there’s nothing wrong with that… But, eating out can either make or break your health efforts. What you choose from the menu and how often you eat out matters. Here are tips to help you find healthier options at your favorite restaurant. 1) Think about selecting a few small dishes instead of one heavy meal. If you cobble together a fruit plate with a soup or salad, you have nothing to worry about. Try to order soup that isn’t overly creamy or heavy. The clearer the soup, like miso or vegetable, the better. And, let your server know ahead of time that you don’t want any bread brought to the table. When it’s sitting in front of you, it’s just way too tempting. 2) If you order a full meal, take home the leftovers. Why not opt for healthier […]

Wondering what is flooding the internet these days? You guessed right. A ton of cleansing myths. CLEANSING MYTHS – #1: There is no need for cleansing since the liver easily detoxifies toxins from food, alcohol, and the environment. TRUTH: During ancient times, this may have been true. However, in the last 50 years, the worldwide production of chemicals surpassed 80,000. Combined with greater than before demands of our fast-paced lifestyle, the liver’s job of detoxification is far from easy. What forces the liver to work 24/7? Endotoxins (created by a person’s own body) Exotoxins such as POPs (persistent organic pollutants) Heavy metals Xenoestrogens CLEANSING MYTHS – #2: Abdominal cramping and severe diarrhea are common side-effects on a cleanse. TRUTH: Uncomfortable side-effects like abdominal cramping and diarrhea can happen with aggressive cleansing programs that use harsh laxative ingredients. My advice? Consider the following, which can minimize cleansing reactions. 1. A fibre supplement made up of 50% soluble and 50% insoluble fibre may help absorb toxins which can be eliminated via stool. 2. Adequate water may help reduce headaches and gently move the bowels. 3. Specific herbal ingredients, such as triphala, may be used to cleanse the bowels. In clinical practice, I […]

As you may know, constipation is a common health problem. Consuming low-quality foods contributes to a rise in digestive issues like IBS, gas/bloating and constipation. For optimal health and to prevent colon cancer, it’s important to have at least one bowel movement per day. Some health experts say 3 bowel movements per day is ideal. If you struggle with uncomfortable straining, partial elimination and dry stools, a lack of water and insufficient fibre may be to blame. A lack of fibre can lead to a build-up of undigested foods in our intestines, putrefying and becoming toxic over time. Sadly, most Canadians fall short of the 30-40 grams of daily fibre that they need. They also consume too much coffee and dehydrating beverages due to a high-stress lifestyle. To prevent constipation, stay hydrated and choose foods that provide both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre absorbs excess cholesterol and toxins. On the other hand, insoluble fibre scours the intestinal tract to keep it clean. In my clinical practice, I encourage a variety of fibre-rich foods in the diet such as: kidney beans quinoa prunes avocados (13 grams of fibre) pears (5 grams of fibre) lentils (6 grams of fibre in ½ cup) Naturopathic […]

After a long, cold winter, chances are you have overindulged. Are you considering Spring cleansing? There’s no need to get down on yourself or feel guilty for eating dishes you couldn’t resist. After all, the holidays are all about family festivities, which almost always involves good food. And lots of it! Now that you’ve enjoyed a few months of warm apple pie, hot chocolate and Netflix, it’s time to press the reset button. Spring is an excellent season for a cleansing program, especially if your liver has been working overtime these past few months. Not only can Spring cleansing help get rid of the holiday bloat, it’s an excellent way to get back into a healthy routine. With seasonal shifts, our bodies need gentle cleansing – not the kind that involves drinking lemon water with maple syrup. By gentle, I mean using natural, organic herbs and eating a variety of delicious, nourishing whole foods. When the right herbs are combined with specific foods, our body’s natural cleansing abilities are awakened. All you have to do to support the detoxification process is provide your body with vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants. In other words, as long as you prepare cleanse-friendly meals and […]
