Say hello to summer! We’re so excited to finally welcome the warm weather. While you’re dusting off your sandals and bikini, take a moment to look at your beauty products. When the seasons change, so do the needs of your hair and skin. That means it’s time to make a few swaps!
Swap: Foundation for BB Cream
If you still want to even out your complexion but don’t want products sweating off your face, choose a BB cream or tinted moisturizer. It will help you get that “flawless” finish without feeling heavy and melting into creases. BB creams are also multi-functional products. Most of them include anti-aging, skin care ingredients like Vitamin A, E and C, as well as moisturizing elements like hyaluronic acid and glycerin.
Swap: Lip Gloss/Lipstick for Tinted Lip Balm
When it’s hot and sweaty outside, the last thing you want to worry about is super-pigmented matte lipstick. Applying and touching up lipstick throughout the day is a lot of maintenance. Not to mention it can easily smear with sweat. Lip gloss could be a better option, though many formulas are thick and sticky. For low-maintenance, healthy lips, opt for a tinted lip balm. It’ll add a touch of color while also nourishing your lips and even adding sun protection.
Swap: Smoothing Hair Cream for Dry Oil
Need to control that frizz? Dry oil tames hair without weighing it down like a cream smoothing product. Most hair creams include silicones, which can be heavy on the hair. When you’re already battling heat and/or humidity, you don’t need a thick product adding to your hair struggles. Whether you want to spray argan oil into your locks or feel like taking a little extra time to massage in coconut dry oil, there’s a formulation out there for you.
Swap: Moisturizer with SPF for Non-Greasy Sunscreen
Moisturizers with added SPF are great. However, they usually only include a low-grade SPF like 15 or 20. When the rays of the sun are the most intense, it’s time to start wearing actual sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Unlike days of the past, sunscreen now comes in lightweight, non-greasy formulas. You can wear it underneath your makeup and moisturizer to fully protect your skin from sunburn.
Swap: Thick, Rich Creams for Lightweight Moisturizers
During cold months there’s nothing like slathering a thick cream all over your dry skin. During summertime, you probably don’t need such a rich formulation. When you’re spending time outside and sweating more than usual, you don’t want a thick lotion making you feel even greasier. Ditch the thick cream and opt for a lightweight moisturizer or serum. They’ll give you the hydration you need without feeling thick and heavy on the skin.

If you’ve been thinking about growing out your hair for a while, summertime could be the perfect opportunity to do it. Long hair looks effortless and beachy. Some might even say it’s mermaid-like. The trick with lengthy, luscious locks is making sure your hair is healthy. Here are some simple tips you can follow!
Trim Your Hair
You’ve probably heard this tip about a dozen times. There’s a reason for that. Trimming your hair gets rid of split ends and damaged strands, which can encourage growth to happen faster. You don’t need to do this frequently, but you should try to get a healthy trim at least every three months.
Lots of Conditioner, Less Shampoo
Hair needs those natural oils in order to grow long and strong, so avoid over-washing your hair. However, you should continue to use conditioner in between washes, as it usually contains moisturizing and strengthening ingredients that nourish the hair. If you’re coloring and heat styling your hair, it’s going to be prone to breakage. That means your strands will become shorter. Conditioner can help repair damage by sealing hair cuticles and replenishing necessary proteins.
Use Hair Masks
Give your hair some intense nourishment every now and then with a hair mask. Masks are like normal conditioner taken to the next level. Not only does it add moisture and shine, but deep conditioning also helps hair’s elasticity. Improved elasticity means less breakage, which can help your hair grow long and healthy. Hair masks/deep conditioners should be added to damp hair, not soaking wet hair, and left on for about 10 minutes. This gives the oils a chance to penetrate the strands fully.
Get the Right Tools
Let’s start with the hairbrush. Choose something with natural bristles to help distribute the scalp’s natural oils throughout the hair. A boar bristle brush is a great option. Also, make sure you’re brushing gently to prevent breakage. When it comes to drying your hair, don’t wrap it up in a towel. Our hair is more fragile when it’s wet and the tough fibers in towels can cause it to break easily. Use an old T-shirt or microfiber hair towel instead, since these are made of gentler fabric. Finally, when you’re ready to hit the hay, opt for a silk or satin pillowcase. The soft material doesn’t create friction like normal cotton pillowcases. That means you’ll wake up with fewer tangles to worry about!
Alternate Your Hairstyle
Are you a frequent ponytail or topknot wearer? Think about changing things up sometimes. The tension caused by pulling your hair up day in and day out can cause breakage. Especially if you place your style in the same place on your head every day. Try changing the height of your pony every now and then or just wear your hair down when possible. It’ll help prevent damage and give you some diversity in your style!

Do you see yourself working at a spa in the future? As a dual licensed massage therapist and esthetician, you could become a well-rounded spa professional. Choosing dual licensure means widening your expertise. This way you can offer a broad range of spa services, ranging from chemical peels and waxing services to Swedish and deep tissue massage. We encourage anyone who’s interested in both massage therapy and esthiology to receive dual licensure at Douglas J Aveda Institute!
Expand the Possibilities
As a licensed esthetician/massage therapist, you can increase your job prospects in the beauty industry. Based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, estheticians have projected job growth of 14% between 2016 and 2026, while massage therapists’ job growth is at a whopping 26%. With these numbers in mind, think of the future possibilities you could have with a dual license! “[Massage and esthiology] are in high demand!” says Jocelyn Birchall, admissions director of Douglas J Aveda Institute. “An esthetician cannot do deep tissue massage but a massage therapist can! Massage can be very wearing on the body so being able to change it up and offer more services can give [help with] longevity.”
Learn Comprehensive Wellness
Imagine that you have a client looking for a full day of self-care. As a dual licensed professional, you can provide them with everything they need, whether it’s a deep tissue massage, relaxing facial or hair removal service. They won’t need to make appointments with multiple people because you can provide a wide range of spa treatments. “Salon owners are going to look at their resumes [and be impressed that] one person can do two jobs!” says Jocelyn. “Or if they have quiet time on their books they can offer other services that other employees might not be able to! They also learn more advanced skin in esthiology.”
By enrolling in both massage therapy and esthiology at Douglas J Aveda Institute, you could learn the following:
Facials and extractions
Ayurvedic massage technique
Customizing treatment plans
Social media networking
Resume and portfolio building
Help Others Feel Better
Being a licensed esthetician/massage therapist means you can connect with people on a daily basis. Massages and skin care treatments are small ways you can help improve someone’s overall wellbeing. The Aveda brand recognizes that total wellness comes from a balance of mind, body and spirit. You can use your knowledge to help others feel confident and relaxed, even if it’s just for a few hours.
Pursue Your Goals
As educators, we’re super excited that more students are becoming interested in dual licensure! At Douglas J Aveda Institute, we want our students to learn and evolve. To make this possible, we work hard to create a compassionate, welcoming environment. Kristalyn Goudy, a current esthiology student, is a great example of the growth and determination synonymous with our brand!
Kristalyn was always interested in skin care, but her career before attending beauty school was much different. She worked as a dispatch supervisor at a transportation company where she was in charge of supervising school bus drivers. Eventually, the desire to take care of her own skin and help others with their concerns lead her to pursue esthiology. “I wanted to be able to learn myself so [I could help] others with the same issues,” she says. “I started off doing my own facials at home. So I decided that I needed to learn more than just facials [but also needed to understand] the importance and benefits of [them].”
Finding a Support Network
When it came down to choosing a beauty school, Douglas J Aveda Institute was the obvious option. Based on our reputation, Kristalyn knew our curriculum could provide her with the tools she’d need for the future. After enrolling in the esthiology program, she realized what an incredible community we have. “I love the fact that everyone is so supportive of each other,” she says. “I’m six months pregnant and I must admit, it’s not easy coming in every day and going home exhausted. [But] the girls are so personable. They check on me and I check on them. And the instructors are just as caring and attentive.”
We believe that creating a family environment is key to students’ success. When you’re comfortable and can be yourself, it’s much easier to try new things and ask questions. Kristalyn has loved being able to practice facials on clients. Seeing them glow and smile when she’s finished makes all of the hard work worth it.
Kristalyn is looking forward to graduating and passing her state board exam. She also can’t wait to welcome a new baby into the world. “I want to learn a couple of advanced techniques like lashes and microblading before I have my baby,” she says. “Once I have my little one, I plan to work at a spa and gain experience. In the future, I plan to open my own skin spa. That is what this is really all for. To have my own [business].” The beauty industry is full of so many possibilities to anyone willing to put in the effort. That’s Kristalyn’s best advice to future students. Don’t ever give up. “If I can do this, so can you,” she says. “I have quit a few things in my life but I told myself that I can finish this.”

Becoming a successful stylist is about a lot more than just doing hair. At Douglas J Aveda Institute, we pride ourselves on students who have the knowledge to confidently take on the workforce. Since graduating from the cosmetology program at our East Lansing location in 2009, Kelly Schlicklin has done just that.
A Collegiate Background
Before she started at Douglas J Aveda Institute, Kelly was pursuing a business degree at Eastern Michigan University. While she had always loved beauty, her parents wanted her to get a college education. She played softball while attending college, which she loved, but due to surgeries, she was unable to keep playing. It was then that she started to rethink things. “I sort of just went to college because I didn’t know what to do,” she says. “I loved business but realized I wasn’t cut out for corporate America. I couldn’t sit in a cubicle all day.” After three and a half years of school, Kelly decided to quit and find a career she was passionate about.
What Douglas J Aveda Institute Did for Kelly
Within 20 minutes of touring our school, Kelly knew she wanted to be there. Our professionalism, career-focused curriculum, and dedication to local communities all stood out to her. She was also drawn to us because we are an Aveda school.
“Aveda has such a good background,” she says. “It’s nice to know that I would be getting the education and product training I needed down the road. I knew that no matter where I went in the world I could have a career because of the Aveda brand.”
During her time at Douglas J Aveda Institute, Kelly was given the tools and opportunities she needed to find her own success. She won the Beacon national student competition and was able to participate in the prestigious North American Hairstyling Awards while she was in school. “Douglas J Aveda Institute [not only] gave me all the tools I needed, but the option to continue learning,” she says. “They taught me you could go above and beyond just styling hair.”
Beauty Meets Business
Kelly’s knowledge of the beauty industry involves a lot more than just techniques and products. Her background in business brought skills to the table that many of her peers did not have. “To make money you need to understand the business of money,” she says. “People want to just do fun things [in beauty] but there are three aspects to hair styling: caring for people, technical skills and business savvy. All three need to be together to be successful.” A huge part of being a stylist is recommending products and teaching a client how to maintain their style. Kelly knows that a huge part of working in business is giving people the tools and information they need to succeed in their own world. In addition to understanding sales and client communication, her business education prepared her to communicate with industry leaders on a professional level.
The Science of Beauty
Most stylists know that beauty involves some science, though not many are quite as passionate about it as Kelly. “What was a real eye-opener for me is the anatomy behind our hair. [When you deal with hair], you’re dealing with DNA,” she says. “You can find out someone’s history from a strand of hair. I hold that with high respect.” Hair is a delicate, volatile substance. Taking the time to learn the science behind its make-up is essential to Kelly.
“We’re dealing with sensitive stuff, people get attached to their hair,” she says. “If you don’t understand that, you kind of lose the respect for what it really is.”
Kelly’s favorite part about beauty is caring for her clients. That’s why taking time on techniques and mastering concepts like color theory/science, face shape and hair genetics is so important to her.
Passion and drive are crucial if you want to succeed in the beauty industry. However, continuous learning is just as important.
“Be a sponge. Soak everything up,” Kelly says. “Apply the knowledge you have now and learn more. Don’t be so close-minded or confident in yourself that you lose the chance to learn. Always be open to knowledge.”
Kelly is currently using her knowledge of beauty, science, and business as a stylist at the Douglas J Salon in Wyoming, Michigan. As far as her future goes, she wants to continue learning and experimenting with beauty’s transformative power. She is even considering becoming a doctor of hair to pursue her love of science. The beauty industry is a wonderful place for experimentation, creativity, and growth. It’s a place to test the limits and try new things. “Failure will happen but success will happen more often,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to go to the extreme. Thinking that you can achieve greatness is the best attribute when going into beauty. Douglas J Aveda Institute gave that to me.”
Graduating from high school is a big deal. It’s time to think about what to do next and make big decisions that could impact your future. Applying to cosmetology school can be a great option if you want to work in the beauty industry. As you weigh your options for which school to attend, we’d suggest considering Douglas J Aveda Institute. Here are a few reasons why!
Prepare for Your Future
We run our student salon like a real salon because we want our students to be ready for the future. Our curriculum isn’t only focused on giving you enough information to pass a test. It’s about shaping you into a business-minded, confident beauty professional. To become an in-demand beauty professional, you need to know how to connect with guests on social media and in real life. The Douglas J Aveda Institute educators can teach you how to master both.
Learn With Modern Technology
It’s the digital age, so you better believe we’re teaching our students using current technology. We were one of the first beauty schools to give all of our students an iPad to use for learning. With their iPad, students have access to LearnAveda, a revolutionary, self-paced digital learning platform. This program allows students to view our entire curriculum from any location. That means you can learn on the go without worrying about heavy textbooks or notebooks!
Make a Difference
Do you like making others feel happy? As a beauty professional, you could do that every day. Beauty is a powerful thing. A student body of unique and talented individuals is what makes Douglas J Aveda Institute such a great place to be. When you combine people with different backgrounds, passions and skills, it creates a diverse educational experience for everyone. Vivian Gonzalez, a student from our Chicago campus, knows all about how empowering it is to be unique!
Finding Confidence in Cosmetology
Vivian grew up with a cosmetologist as a mother, so she’s been passionate about beauty since she was young. She found that not only is beauty a fun, creative outlet, it’s also a great way to gain self-confidence. “I had really bad acne [as a teen] and was really insecure,” she says. “Once I looked into skincare and taking care of myself, I realized I had a big passion for it.”
When Vivian decided to pursue cosmetology, she knew it had to be at Douglas J Aveda Institute. Our school resonated with her more than any other institution. Vivian lives in Indiana and takes two trains to get to school in Chicago. That’s how passionate she is about attending one of our campuses.
“[I love] their philosophy of green beauty and sustainability,” she says. “I fell in love with the holistic approach.”
Vivian’s Experience So Far
While studying cosmetology, Vivian has realized what a diverse and loving industry this is.“Everyone is so nice,” she says. “People want to help you grow and thrive.” She’s been inspired by many people here at our school. One of those was her former esthetics educator, Miss Lauren. “She had so much experience and taught me a lot about the real world. She was really passionate and inspired me to do my best.”
Circling back to her initial love of skin care, Vivian has fallen in love with performing skin analyses. This involves identifying different skin problems like dehydration or milia and developing a treatment plan. While she’s always been passionate about skin care, she never thought she’d actually be able to perform a skin analysis.
Vivian graduates from our cosmetology program on April 20th, 2019 and you better believe she has goals. “My short term goal is to find a job and get some experience in the industry,” she says. “My long term goal is to open my own spa and create a line of luxury skin care products. In the meantime, she’s focusing on preparing for her state board exam and getting all the knowledge she needs to be mentally and physically prepared for the real world.
For any future students, Vivian advises to always give 100% and never be afraid to ask questions. She also wants people to know how great it is to be different.
“As a person of color who’s also trans, it’s best to go into the world knowing you are different. Being different is empowering. Don’t be afraid to be you.”

At Douglas J Aveda Institute, we are always looking for ways to give back to our community. Our Grand Rapids location was lucky enough to participate in the Forever Home series, a continuing effort to spotlight children in Michigan’s foster care system. This worthy cause is committed to making sure that these kids can find a forever home they deserve. We are so grateful that through them our students and staff were able to meet the beautiful and talented Katlyn. Our stylists were able to give her some beauty advice and in return we got to hear more about her and her amazing personality. Read more to hear about our time with Katlyn.
A Budding Sense of Style
At 14 years old, Katlyn is just discovering her sense of fashion. Our stylists were able to help her unique style blossom by teaching her about some hair and makeup techniques. Telling her what shampoo they were using on her and why it was beneficial for her hair was just one beauty tip that Katlyn and our stylists were able to bond over. Seeing how Katlyn lit up while getting the pampering she deserves was another reminder to us why we love what we do!
A Creative Personality
Everyone knows that beauty takes a lot of creativity and that is something that Katlyn has an abundance of. Not only was she excited to learn more about the beauty industry but Katlyn also told our stylists how she’s already using her creativity in her everyday life. Katlyn loves learning something new, whether that’s something from her math and science classes at school or learning how to play a new instrument. We can’t help but admire her love of trying something new and our stylists were so excited to hear all about her experiences while they did her hair.
We loved finding out more about Katlyn and her determination to go after what she wants. She told us her dream of becoming a singer and the many instruments she’s learning to help that dream become a reality. The violin, guitar and drums are just a few of the instruments she enjoys creating music with. In addition to all the musical instruments she plays, Katlyn is also interested in playing sports and she currently plays for a volleyball team. We felt so honored to hear more about this amazing young woman and we are so inspired by what she’s accomplished so far.
Inspired by Katlyn?
Were you just as amazed with Katlyn as we were? If you want to get involved and meet amazing individuals like Katlyn, then you should check out our cosmetology program. Here, you’ll be able to combine your passions of beauty and creativity with helping others feel good.
