Today we took a simple piece of MDF, cut it into a large circle, and created this beautiful DIY Modern Clock. We partnered with Ace and used their high quality, gorgeous paint to give our clock a stunning look. Watch our VIDEO below to see how we cut a circle out of a piece of MDF board/wood and made this clock!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
  • MDF board - Ours was 1/2" thick and 2' x 2' to begin with.
  • Clock Mechanism - Ours was designed for up to a 40" clock.
  • Clock Hands - Search the internet and find a style you love.
  • Paint + Primer in One - Clark + Kensington from Ace is extremely high quality. It's very thick and durable. Our color is called Charcoal Pencil 34A-5 and it's drop dead gorgeous!
  • Compass - We created our own by finding the center of the board, screwing in a screw right in the middle, tying string around the screw, and connecting the other end of the string to a pencil.
  • Reciprocating Saw - There are many ways you can cut a circle out of wood or MDF, and we chose to use a reciprocating saw by following our pencil markings.
  • Orbital Sander - to smooth out the edges
  • Wall Mounting Hardware - Find a sturdy hook so you can hang this beauty up.
  • Needle Nose Pliers and Open End Wrench - These tools came in handy when putting the clock hands on.

Before You Go To The Store:
I love shopping online to save time, and Ace has made paint shopping online so easy and informative. The Paint Studio is a one stop shop for paint inspiration, helpful video tutorials, and tools to narrow down your color! You can even upload a photo of your room and "try on" different colors. If you're like me and get stuck choosing the perfect color, you'll want to check out this site before you go to the store.

Isn't this color just beautiful? It's called Charcoal Pencil 34A-5 if you missed it. I love how it looks with the gold clock hands. This Clark + Kensington paint is exclusive to Ace Hardware. Not only is the color perfect, but this particular paint is very durable, stain resistant, easy to wash, and goes on smooth.

Here's a tip you may not know about Ace. If you forget something at the store, you can call them up, order it over the phone, and they will deliver it to your door with no delivery fee! Isn't that incredible? I can't tell you how many times I've gone to the store, went home, started the project, and realized I needed something else and had to run back to the store. Ace really goes the extra mile to make their customers happy.

Something else I really love about Ace is that it's smaller than other retailers. There is a home town feel with their friendly and knowledgeable employees, and the store is easy to navigate which saves the shopper a lot of time. We have simply loved working with Ace on this project and we can't recommend them enough. Find a store near you, roll up your sleeves, and create!

Check out our DIY video of this project below:

Clark + Kensington Paint from Ace, has done it again!  This time, we have taken this durable, and beautiful paint to the outdoors.  We were so happy to discover that Clark + Kensington has an exterior paint that is not only durable, but was rated BEST exterior paint in a 2018 issue of a popular consumer review magazine.

I have been wanting to add a ladder herb box to my garden for a couple of years now.  When I found a local handyman who built these beauties, I could hardly contain my excitement.  I knew that a little paint from Ace would preserve and beautify this cedar herb ladder for years to come.

In fact when things were said and done, I found myself the proud owner of not one, but two of these lovely ladders.

When visiting our local Ace, I went straight to the paint counter in search of the perfect paint for this project.  The paint expert behind the counter didn't hesitate for a second when he recommended Clark + Kensington's exterior paint for my project.  He explained how the paint would be thick, almost like pudding, but that I would be able to apply it with ease.  This thickness of paint would be the very thing that helps it withstand the elements.  He was so knowledgable and kind.  There is no doubt that Ace has their costumers' best interest in mind, and are willing to go the extra mile.

When trying to decide on the color that would look beautiful in my garden,  I came across this gorgeously neutral color, called Smokey Taupe (N-C6).  I thought it would blend seamlessly into the garden, while displaying my growing herbs.

Painting these boxes was so incredibly quick and easy.  The paint, although thick like pudding, went on like butter.  It dried quickly and evenly.  I only needed to paint two coats.   The finish is so smooth and is absolutely stunning.  I love how in different light the color seems to shift and change ever so slightly.  It really was a perfect color choice.

I think that these painted herb ladder boxes, with the help of Ace's Clark + Kensington's paint, make my little garden look so charming and complete.

Did you know that there are over 4,000 Ace stores worldwide?  If you are interested in their exclusive and incredible Clark + Kensington paint, you are sure to find an Ace near you.  And if you don't have an Ace near you, check out ThePaintStudio.com, where you can find all the brands you know and love.

Thanks to Ace, we we inspired and empowered to transform these plain, natural wood stools.  We are so grateful for Ace's support and sponsorship for this post.

Knowing our children would be using these stools, we needed to find a paint that was durable, stain resistant, and had excellent washability.  Clark & Kensington Paint, which is sold exclusively at Ace, fit all of those criteria, and on top of that had so many beautiful colors to choose from.  Ace only carries the best of the best, and we knew that this paint would withstand the test of time, as well as our children's feet.

Ace has anything and everything that you need to conquer this DIY.  While we were there, we picked up some painters tape, and paintbrushes to get the job done.  It was certainly a no hassle experience. On top of that, the sales associate who specifically helped us select and mix our paint was so incredibly helpful and knowledgable.  We could certainly tell that Ace wants to go the extra mile for their costumer.

We ended up choosing three gorgeous shades of green to transform our plain stools.  Juniper Tree (28B-7), Soothing Eucalyptus (26B-6), and Mountain Greenery (28B-5) were the winners.

What do you think?  If you are interested in what Ace has to offer, it is a comfort to know that there are over 4,000 stores around the world to help you accomplish your goals.  If you want to see firsthand how we transformed these step stools check out our video below!

At long last, the much anticipated Redwood Pergola, featuring Humboldt Redwood is finished.  To check out our first post on this project click HERE!  The weather here in Utah has been nice and wet, which is perfect for May flowers, but tough for Pergola building.  But we persevered, and the results are incredible.  This gorgeous DIY Pergola, will no doubt stand the test of time.

If you want to see a the time-lapse video over on our youtube channel, click below!

It's amazing to think that the above Pergola, made from this beautiful and sustainable redwood, started out like this.  It's all about the #RedwoodDIY.

There was a lot of work that went into this project, from designing the pergola to fit my brother's patio perfectly on the Humboldt website, to making the cuts, sanding and finally getting everything up.

But the results, speak volumes. I think my brother would agree that it was well worth the incredible amount of work it took to create.

Redwood's rich, warm color and beauty creates this breathtaking first impression.  My brother's backyard certainly has got that wow factor, now.  Along with that wow factor, this charming pergola blends in beautifully into the landscape creating a peaceful and natural outdoor living space.

I think I know where we should celebrate Memorial Day this year.  Time to fire up the grill under this beauty.

Our brother recently bought a new home, and discovered that his deck, which was made of plastic composite, had completely rotted.  It was perfect timing when Humboldt Redwood contacted us, and wanted us to build something beautiful with one of nature’s strongest and most durable building materials.  Redwood is much lighter in weight than plastic composite and tropical hardwoods, redwood can be easily cut, sawed, and drilled with regular woodworking tools, making it an ideal material for this seasons DIY projects.  It is the perfect solution to sprucing up my brother's backyard now that he had to get rid of his old deck.  Thank heavens redwood is naturally resistant to insects and decay, and resists warping and splitting.  His new pergola will stand the test of time and will leave a breathtaking first impression for years to come.

With the help of Humboldt Redwood, our brother designed this pergola, which will fit perfectly in his backyard.

It’s all about #RedwoodDIY! Whether you’re building a deck or accenting the interior of a home, few products have the warmth, character, durability and comfort of sustainability harvested Humboldt Redwood.

This is the beautiful redwood provided by Humboldt Redwood.

We are excited to get going on this DIY.  It is sure to be a beautiful pergola that will make our brother's backyard a place we will all want to be!

And for your viewing pleasure, here is the before of the beautiful redwood, and his soon to be pergola.

We needed a very long, custom curtain rod (15 feet to be exact) for our family room. We decided to make our own out of 3/4" black steel pipe which can be found at the hardware store. We broke it down into 3 sections . One section over each window so we could work with it in our space. This DIY curtain rod is very sturdy, beautiful, easy to put together, and it gives the room an industrial, modern feel. Watch the video below to see how we made this awesome, custom, 15 foot curtain rod.

After our 18 month collaboration and partnership with AutoSource, Taj and I decided to bite the bullet and purchase our new-to-us car.  Because of the awesome relationship with AutoSource that we formed through our partnership, we didn't want to turn in the keys, but decided instead to keep them.

The car buying process really was as wonderful as they say.  We got a screaming deal on our beautiful car.  Thanks to Curtis Vowles, our amazing sales consultant, we felt completely taken care.  We left the lot having saved a chunk of change, about 25% off of MSRP.  Before we left the lot, they washed as well as detailed the car, and did 151 point inspection to ensure the car was completely ready to go.  We are beyond thrilled with our purchase from AutoSource, and highly recommend them for your car buying needs.

DIY Dave made this girls' Valentines Day boxes this year - dad WIN! He did such a great job!

THE UNICORN VALENTINE'S DAY BOX

To make the unicorn, we used a cereal box, covered it in white paper, printed the eyes (google unicorn eyes), added yarn and braided it, and the horn was just rolled up paper covered in pink satin ribbon. A few other details were drawn on and colored in. We love how this turned out!

THE GUITAR VALENTINE'S DAY BOX

The guitar was a little more intricate, but the time put in paid off! You can use our DIY Piñata tutorial for basic instructions on how to create and cut out any object using cardboard.

DIY LEGO Batman Pinata - YouTube

We drew the shape on cardboard, cut out the pieces, taped it all together, covered it in white paper, taped over the sides with blue painters tape to hide imperfections. We added a cute strap and drew on the details. For the turning pegs we used wall anchors (for a screw).

And this was the easiest box of all, haha! We just cut a hole in the top of a LEGO box. He was so happy with it, and we were glad we didn't have to create something else. Whew! I'm just happy he kept his LEGO boxes from Christmas.

THE LEGO VALENTINE'S DAY BOX

Happy Valentine's DAY!
