A Wollaton woman who has bipolar disorder is using her experience to help others suffering with mental health problems.

Rachel Monk, who also has Asperger syndrome, volunteers as an occupational therapist assistant at Highbury Hospital, which is managed by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The 34-year-old was diagnosed with bipolar II – a condition which causes hypomania (a mild form of mania) – three-and-a-half years ago.

Rachel, who worked as a healthcare assistant in adult mental health services at the time, had a breakdown and spent three months in hospital.

She said: “I knew when I started working in mental health when I was 19 that I had something else going on with the Asperger’s, but I didn’t feel up to going to see anyone about it.
