Acid doesn't necessarily scream "beneficial for the skin", or "au naturale" right?! Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient you may have heard of or seen listed on your natural skincare products, but what exactly is it and is it natural? Read on to find out why this acid might actually be a game changer for your skincare regime!
WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that can be found in the connective tissues of the body. It is thick and gel like and, when used in skincare products, usually comes from plants or through organic fermentation. As we age the hyaluronic acid decreases in the body which means having this acid in your skincare regime can really boost the appearance and hydration of your skin! Pretty cool right?!
Due its natural occurrence in the body is unlikely to cause any irritation or allergic reaction
Brightens complexion by boosting moisture in the skin
Can help to improve skin texture and tone by plumping skin with hydration
Promotes collagen synthesis

Salt is an incredibly rich source of minerals and an ingredient that has probably snuck into many of your favourite au naturale skincare products. But why? There a number of different types of salts, each with their own unique benefits which can support skin health in a variety of ways. Here are some of the ways salt can support healthy skin and the best ways to soak up the salty benefits.
What Salts Are We Referring To?
Mineral salts such as Dead Sea salt or Pink Himalayan salts are rich in magnesium and other minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, selenium and iodine. Magnesium is a mineral many people are deficient in and it is essential for nervous system health and relaxation. Water molecules are attracted to sodium and chloride meaning these salts can support skin hydration by binding with water and delivering moisture to skin cells.
Sea salt is naturally anti-inflammatory and antibiotic so great for use on inflamed skin conditions, cuts or blemishes.
Salt can also promote detoxification in the body by attracting toxins and drawing them out of the skin and from deeper in the body (a reason Epsom salt baths are so highly touted!)
Exfoliation to promote circulation, skin regeneration and to improve the overall appearance of skin
Supports hydration of skin cells
Rich in magnesium to promote relaxation and decrease tension, aches and pains in the body
Salt can also help to cleanse and deeply clean the skin to balance sebum production and help reduce breakouts
As a natural disinfectant, salt is often used in au naturale toothpastes as well to kill any bugs in the mouth and as a gentle abrasive to clean teeth

This natural toothpaste has no nasties (of course) and uses Sea Salt to clean teeth and to work against bad bacteria in the mouth. It also uses Ratanhia, Myrrh and Chestnut Bark to promote healthy gums, whiten teeth and to prevent plaque build up.
This shampoo uses sea salt to give hair volume and body. It also uses Green Tea to boost the scalp and hair follicle with antioxidants while Vitamin E and Wheat germ hydrate the hair, which will prevent breakage and ensure hair is looking as silky smooth as possible.
As we mature, our bodies become less efficient in producing collagen meaning its ability to bounce back and regenerate lessens and the prominence of lifelines and free radical damage increases. We think there is nothing more beautiful (or more a privilege) than growing to a ripe old age, however we also believe that we can slow the "signs" of ageing by choosing to live a healthy holistic lifestyle, including the products we allow our skin to absorb!
We’ve come to find some beautiful natural makeup products that dry and/or maturing skin will love! These products focus on bringing a radiant glow to the face and avoid any heavy powders or drying ingredients that may settle into fine lines on the face while working to cover, rather than enhance, the skin. Here are our top go-to’s to leave your skin looking as young as you feel!

In ancient Indian Ayurvedic practice copper water vessels are used to maintain optimal health. Copper drink bottles and homewares are becoming quite the trend not only for looking amazing but for the health benefits they can bring.
Ayurveda focuses on the balancing of doshas within the body. Each person has a distinct combination of vata, kapha and pitta doshas, which must be kept in balance to experience optimum health. Copper drink bottles allow copper to leach into the water leaving it positively charged and dosha balancing. Copper is an essential trace mineral that cannot be produced by the body and which has some seriously great health benefits.
Cleanse and detox the liver
Supports digestive health
Improves skin health
Boosts melanin production

Slows down ageing
Supports cardiovascular health

Organic certification is something increasingly important to look out for with many mainstream brands and products using words like “natural” and “organic” to jump on the green bandwagon. But can they make those claims without actually being organic? The sad truth is, yes they can. The beauty industry remains unregulated meaning brands can put whatever ingredients they like into a product and say anything about the product as there is NO GOVERNING BODY to question these claims. This is why organic certification is SO important.
Australian Certified Organic is a certification board that trace all ingredients back to their place of origin. This means checking that ingredients and products contain no:
Synthetic colouring agents
Petroleum derived products
Preservatives not derived from natural sources
The ACO’s process for certification is extensive and rigorous explained in detail here to ensure that any product with an ACO certification is truly organic.
September is Organic Awareness Month with the mission of educating and raising awareness about the importance of certification and truly understanding what ingredients are in our products and where they come from.
Here is a list of all ACO Certified Organic cosmetics brands that you can trust, we highly recommend supporting these brands for their commitment to only producing the highest quality, genuinely organic products.

Vitamin C may not sounds as exciting or groundbreaking as some of the superfood ingredients and herbs we talk about here on Depths. But the truth is- most of these superfoods are super because of their incredible Vitamin C content. Jojoba Oil has a very unique quality compared with products and oils from other plants- it is the CLOSEST oil to the natural sebum produced by our skin. This means that not only can Jojoba Oil penetrate the skin deeply to offer maximum moisture, it is the perfect oil for those with oily or congested skin who are concerned about overloading skin pores.
What is Jojoba Oil?
Jojoba Oil is made from crushing the bean of the Jojoba shrub. The oil created is fine and is identical in molecular structures to that of our skin’s natural sebum- amazing right?! This oil isn’t a regular star in organic skincare for nothing!
Benefits of Jojoba Oil:
Balances skin’s sebum production
Rich in Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids
Contains Vitamin A, D and E
Very gentle so perfect for those with sensitive or irritated skin
Provides deep moisture to the skin by being able to penetrate the deeper layers of our skin
Products: The Jojoba Company Jojoba Oil
This 100% pure Jojoba Oil is cold pressed and filtered meaning it is in its purest form and with an oil with the ability to penetrate so deeply into the skin it is so important that there are absolutely no nasties in there!
Pai Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator
The exfoliator uses Jojoba Beads to gently buff away any dead skin cells, dirt or grime without stripping the skin, leaving skin hydrated instead. The ‘Micro-Sphere’s’ used are perfectly round so won’t damage delicate facial skin.
Jojoba Oil can also do wonders for hair! Perfect for smoothing hair follicles for shiny, frizz free locks! This hair crème can be used as a leave in conditioner and heat protector which will leave your hair soft and smelling amazing.
It’s that time of the year again when pesky colds and flu start spreading and our immune systems might need an extra hand in protecting us against these nasties to ensure we are feeling our best throughout the winter season. There are a number of steps I take year round to support my body's immune and detoxification systems, depending on what I personally need at any given time, but here are just a few of my staples that I find are an amazing support, especially throughout winter.
It’s no secret that Turmeric is a favourite of mine, we have a whole blog post on its wonderful benefits HERE Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants to support your body in preventing and overcoming infection. Simply make a tea from freshly chopped Turmeric or use Turmeric powder in your morning bulletproof or smoothie or soups and curries for an added immunity boost.
Ginger aids digestion, relieves nausea, is anti-inflammatory and great for the immune system. I love chopping fresh, organic ginger in boiling water for a morning boost in the winter.

Oil of Oregano can greatly support respiratory illness and is also anti-fungal and rich in antioxidants to support immunity. A few drops of this oil taken daily throughout the winter will do your immune system a world of good.
Apple Cider Vinegar is rich in enzymes and proteins that support immunity and deotixifcation in the body. I love having a dash of ACV in my water in the morning to boost my digestive system and support my immune system in winter – add in some cayenne pepper too for an additional immune boost!
Detoxification is key to supporting healthy immune function and supporting our bodies to rid itself of toxins so that it can focus on working its absolute best! I love boosting my daily greens intake all year round but especially in winter to help this process.
WelleCo – The Super Elixir Alkalising Greens
This supplement is seriously amazing for your overall health packed with superfoods rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric, minerals and vitamins from natural wholefoods.
Herbal TeaEdible Beauty Tea No. 9 – Tulsi Immune Fire
This organic loose-leaf tea uses Tulsi, Elderberry and Yarrow to boost immunity, circulation and to help combat nasty bugs. Tulsi is a natural antibiotic, fungicide and disinfectant- the perfect natural support for colds and flu! Elderberry supports neutralising viruses and Yarrow is a natural decongestant. Ginger and Chilli also work to boost the immune system to fight and protect against bugs.
Getting enough shut-eye is hugely important in ensuring our bodies have time to heal, fight and protect and that our immune systems are working at their absolute best. So make sure you’re getting the right amount of sleep for your body and that you’re taking time to move your body, meditate and slow down so your adrenals and immune system can keep up with you.
