Fun Play Ideas to Beat the Winter Boredom

Do you live somewhere that it gets cold in the winter?  We live in Maine and it gets cold, REALLY COLD!  If you are from a warm climate and think that 40 degrees is cold – come visit us on a brisk January day when it is 0 out with a windchill of -20.  Some days its to cold to go outside other than to get straight in the car (that I started with remote start from inside the house).  Luckily my kids LOVE playing outside in the snow so on days that it is nice enough for them to be outside they will go out.  But on those days that they can’t play outside – boredom sets in fast.  I’ve come up with a list of Fun Play Ideas to Beat the Winter Boredom that goes beyond video games to allow your kids an opportunity to be creative!

So by default – if my kids are inside these are there go to activities:

    • Video Games (we have a Nintendo Switch that they would play all day if we let them)
    • Play with their Tablets
    • Read
    • Fight
    • Build with LEGOs

    • Play with Sands Alive (or Playdoh)
    • Complain that they have nothing to do
    • Watch TV
    • Fight
    • Play board games
    • Play with the dog
    • Fight
    • Ask me what they can do
Why is Play so Important?

Why should kids experience different kinds of play instead of the same old thing all the time?  Watch the video below from The Genius of Play to hear their explanation.

If you have fallen into a rut and your kids are always doing the same thing or don’t really play at all take a peek at the fun activity we did recently.

Winter Invitation to Create

Gather up a bunch of supplies – this is whatever you have in the house.  For our activity I gathered winter the following themed items:

  • Pom Poms
  • Craft Sticks
  • Tinsel
  • Crinkled Paper
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Tissue Paper

  • Colored paper (multiple colors)
  • Kwik Stix (or any paint)
  • Chalk
  • Winter stickers
  • Glue
  • Glue Stick
  • Glitter Glue
  • Scissors

You can get out anything you want – you can have a theme or not – it could be as simple as a cardboard box, scissors, markers and tape.  Once you have gathered your supplies put them all together – call the kids and tell them they can make anything they want with the supplies.  Sit back and watch your kids minds work!

  • My daughter immediately set out to create paper snowflakes – she made three before deciding to try something new.  My son started painting with the Kwik Stix and made an outdoor scene of our house – he used glue to add some of the other elements to create icicles hanging from the roof just like we have outside our house right now.
  • Next my son glued three different sized pom poms together to create a snowman.  Finally he glued four popsicle sticks to create a picture frame.
  • My daughter used her scrap paper to create a snowflake ornament and to attach her snowflakes together.  She also used the glitter glue to decorate her snowflakes so they would shine.

It was exciting to watch my kids be creative and to watch to see what they would think of next.  All told with the simple materials I found around the house they created 5 different art projects.  The best thing about it was I didn’t have to tell them what to do – I just sat back and helped if they needed me.

Find some of the other fun ways we have played during the winter below.

***I am a Oriental Trading Brand Ambassador – I received free product in exchange for review.  All opinions are my own***

Host a Gingerbread Cookie Themed Playdate

I love Gingerbread men!  I’m not sure I’ve told you all of my great love – I have a completely Gingerbread themed tree, my entire kitchen is decorated in Gingerbread men and so is the majority of my living room.  It’s such a problem that my tree is almost overflowing because I can’t resist buying new ornaments each year (and people give them to me as well).  So I digress…each year I try to instill (my husband would say force) my love of gingerbread men on my children and nieces and nephews by hosting a cookie cake decorating party.  This year I decided to take it up a notch and get a bunch of Gingerbread themed items to really make the party more festive.

The weekend before our cookie decorating party we went to New Hampshire with our family.  Since all six kids were together we took the opportunity to make their super cute Gingerbread House placemats (they are out of stock currently but these Gingerbread House Sticker Scenes are really cute too!).  They also got another chance to drink out of their super cute Gingerbread Boy and Girl mugs (and with 12 a box these are super cost effective for classroom parties too!)  I figured since we always eat one of the cookie cakes at the party we needed to have some cute Gingerbread themed dessert plates and these definitely fit the bill!

The Gingerbread House Placemat set has enough materials to make 12 placemats – and boy does it have a ton of stickers!  The kids couldn’t have used them all if they tried!  They all might have used maybe a third of the stickers they could have and their placemats were still beautiful.

We had a lot of fun getting ready for our party and at the party – check out my daughter’s finished cookie cake below!  If you want to have your own cookie decorating party I have instructions on my other post.

If you are looking to find a perfect party theme make sure you check out Oriental Trading – they always have what I’m looking for (and usually more!)

Free to Create with Open Ended Art

Do your kids love to create?  Do you secretly (or maybe not so secretly) stress about the mess they are going to make every time you get the art supplies out?  I will admit I definitely have the tendency to skip doing an art project if I think it will get to messy – especially when we don’t have a lot of time.  I have found one company that makes art supplies I LOVE!  The Pencil Grip, Inc created Kwik Stix (see my review here).  Now they have introduced Thin Stix and Magic Stix and I was super excited to test out the new products.  Enter a way to allow your kids to be Free to Create with Open Ended Art.  Put out the supplies and let them get creative!  Read to the end of this post for a chance to enter a Giveaway to win some of these awesome products!

I decided to let Buddy test out the supplies while his sister was gone on a playdate.  He had used the Kwik Stix before so he knew what he was doing right away.  I gave him paper and let him get to it.  He was super impressed with the fact that the Magic Stix won’t dry out for 7 days with the cap off (I also think that is pretty cool!) – it’s fun to hear what your kids think of things once they start reading and forming their own opinions.  I like the plastic case the markers come in and that they are washable – 6 year old boys can end up with marker in weird places!  The colors were vibrant and the marker was perfectly sized for his little hands.  Since there was no white marker (as there typically aren’t) he was off to the Thin Stix to complete his picture.

My kids already know and love Kwik Stix and were excited to use the new Thin  Stix version.  I love that Kwik Stix are solid tempera paint – this means you have all the flexibility of paint with way less mess.  My kids are older now than the first time we tested Kwik Stix and I trust them more with independent projects.  With Kwik Stix I love knowing that I can walk out of the room and not wonder what is happening and/or ending up painted by accident (the dog?!?).  We keep our Kwik Stix in the kids art storage that has art supplies available that they can use anytime.

Would I recommend Kwik Stix products?  DEFINITELY!  They are great for art projects, posters, and much more.  My kids love them and I love that!  Pull out the Kwik Stix today (or order some to put under the tree) and let your kids get creative with open ended art.  You never know what they will come up with!
