Copen Local Base Kamakura A HIP LIFESTYLE CAFE Copen Local Base Kamakura is a lovely cafe with a beach vibe. (Kamakura in Japan is near the coast.) Its location is a 4-minute walk from the Kamakura station. To me it is not an ordinary cafe. I find it unique because the cafe provides educational and socializing aspect to visitors whether they share interests in cars or not. Copen Local Base has a Copen convertible displayed for fans as well as those who are regular cafe customers. This showroom type of cafe was created by Daihatsu Car Company. It is a place where locals can hang out and socialize while they are provided with information on Copen. The concept for Copen Local Base is a life style shop that gives roots to the community by educating the people through Copen cars. Not only does Copen Local Base allow automobile fans to […]

Kamakura City ☆ Japan Kamakura is a city South West of Tokyo with many temples and shrines, and a beach vibe. This lovely coastal city has become my children’s favorite destination during our trip back to Japan in the summer. In Kamakura you see traditional Japanese architecture coexist with modern stylish buildings. The city lies on the coast facing the Pacific Ocean and many of its beaches are surfers’ hangouts. It is a great place for a short get away from Tokyo since it only takes about an hour from the central Tokyo by train, Shonan Shinjuku Line. You will find Kamakura much more relaxing, lush, and traditional than it is in Tokyo. The photos I have taken and posted on this post were all taken and edited with a VSCO Cam on my iPhone. I left my big DSLR in the U.S. and I do wish I brought it […]

Accidentally Homeschooling I have been homeschooling my pre-k son. I say “accidentally” because it wasn’t in my plan to homeschool him. In fact, I was preparing to send him to a preschool. We live in the area where almost all preschool aged children especially at his age (as far as I know) go to a preschool. “Accidentally homeschooling” because if we didn’t move back to the D.C. metropolitan area in the last year of my son’s preschool, I probably would have not chosen this path. In expat life it’s not uncommon to fall into a situation accidentally. Expat Life & Pre-School Overseas My son attended a local Montessori preschool in Mumbai, India for a year and a half starting at the age of 3. After school, he often had a play date. Sometimes I took him to a play date and many other times, play dates were conducted by nannies. […]

The Yayoi Kusama Exhibit The Kusama Exhibit at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. which started in February 2017 became quite a sensation in Washington, D.C. After having visited the Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors Exhibit at Hirshhorn Museum in person, I would say that it was out of this world experience to me. I found very helpful to know about the Kusama exhibit before going there because it is a very different museum experience from the usual ones. My two friends who had already gone to the exhibit and inspired me to go helped me prepare by teaching me some facts and details about the exhibit before I headed to the museum. About Yayoi Kusama The avant-garde artist and writer, Yayoi Kusama, was born in Nagano, Japan. She was born to an affluent family, but had a traumatic childhood due to her father’s extra-marital relationships and her mother’s abusive behavior […]

Dermatitis & Change In Environment An international move takes a toll on expats’ health causing a strain on their physical and emotional state induced by stress of transition. A drastic change in environments can trigger health issues. For instance, introducing ourselves to new household products and cosmetics overseas (and even back home) can cause dermatitis for those who are sensitive to chemicals. That is what happened to me. I have been suffering from contact dermatitis on my face especially on my eyelids and forehead since my family and I moved back to the United States from overseas in July, 2016. A couple of months after my dermatitis had started and the rash had become aggravated, I saw two dermatologists. Unfortunately both of the visits ended in vain. They neither helped me with a solution to the issue nor gave me any directions to seek. A half year later, my issue […]

Cherry Blossoms in Washington, D.C. 2017 These are cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. photographed on March 13, 2017. In the morning I read on the news that a snow storm, Stella, was approaching the northeast coast of the United States and the cold spell could possibly damage the cherry blossoms. I was worried that many cherry blossoms may not bloom this year. I also learned that some have already bloomed, so I decided on a whim to explore a bit around Tidal Basin to check them out with my son. Since my son who is pre-school age is homeschooled this year (this is a whole another topic), it allowed me to do something spontaneous like this. When I approached Tidal Basin, I could tell that it was way before the peak bloom. However, I did see some that have bloomed. These are one of the few cherry blossom trees that […]

BUYING A HOME SITE UNSEEN Buying a home without seeing the actual property comes with a risk and is not ideal, let alone a huge commitment. Nevertheless, it is a choice that some people end up making because of their circumstances. Some expats, for example, buy a home site unseen when they are still living overseas so that they would secure a home to move into and a school to enroll their children on time, and start the process of the transition. It was mere a year ago or so when my husband and I made a final decision to buy our current home. We literally put on an offer during our vacation in Sri Lanka. It was a surreal experience and felt just like an online shopping. The difference was that there was no return policy. It was our first time to be a home buyer. Needless to say […]

LEATHER BAGS IN DHARAVI BY LEATHER FIELD If you are looking for a shop to have leather bags made, I highly recommend Leather Field. Leather Field is a shop in Dharavi, Mumbai that specializes in order made items such as purses, jackets, wallets, and so forth. According to the shopkeeper, Leather Field owns its workshop where their craftsmen work directly for them. I found that this system enables Leather Field to control product quality and prices better as opposed to some shops which seem to outsource their orders to independent workshops. What I loved about Leather Field was that they were always professional, punctual and reliable. Punctuality was not always seen at Famous Sales Leather Boutique that I previously used for making a few leather bag. The quality of craftsmanship at Leather Field was higher than the other shop I mentioned. Therefore, I started ordering from Leather Field in the […]

DILKHUSH SPECIAL SCHOOL Dilkhush Special School is a school for children with intellectual challenges and special needs age from 6 to 18. The school was opened by the sisters of Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1971. It is located in Juhu, Mumbai near the Juhu Beach. Dilkhush Special School is the very first and only school existed in Mumbai for the children with special needs at the time of its opening. The first time I learned about Dilkhush was through my Japanese friends because the school and the church have fostered a relationship with a Japanese community in Mumbai for some time. I believe that this relationship started because of a Japanese sister, Keiko, also known as Sister Asunta in her church community. Sister Keiko was one of the sisters who helped make Dilkhush Special School. If you would like to know more about the school, please […]

Modern Rustic Indian Design Home This modern rustic Indian design home was the last home that I got to shoot before leaving Mumbai, India in June, 2016. This gorgeous home belongs to my American friend, Anne and her family, that I had a chance to know in my last year. The photo shoot took place about a month before my departure. I wanted to edit and post these photos on my blog sooner, but the big move took over my life. Then the transitional stage between Mumbai and my current home in Northern Virginia totally dominated my time. I am very excited to be able to present Anne’s home finally on my blog. It has been in my mind for too long. I met Anne shortly after having returned to the school year in 2015 after our second summer break in Mumbai. I remember spotting her because I liked the […]
