Cal Fire-Butte County will be conducting a controlled burn Thursday of 27 acres along Cohasset Road, approximately 10 miles northeast of the community of Cohasset.

The burn will begin around 10 a.m.

Smoke will be highly visible in northern Butte County and eastern Tehama County.

On Friday, a controlled burn is planned in Oroville.

Chico >> Chico State University has a busy summer ahead with multiple construction and demolition projects in the coming months, including the removal of a campus building and several houses in the College Park Neighborhood.

The university will take down Siskiyou Hall in June to make way for the new physical sciences building scheduled for completion in 2019.

Some new estimates for population growth of California's counties and cities were released recently, and there's one big local surprise: The state reports Paradise is booming.

The Department of Finance released a report on growth from Jan. 1, 2017, to Jan. 1 2018, and said the town on the ridge is growing almost twice as fast as the state as a whole.

In his year-and-a-half as California's attorney general, Democrat Xavier Becerra has made a full-time job of fighting the Trump Administration, filing more than 30 lawsuits to defend the environment, immigrants, birth control access and more.

Which makes it odd that when Becerra's supporters bought TV time to air a campaign commercial for him, they chose the most Trump-boosting network around: Fox News.

Oroville >> An Oroville man accused of fatally striking a bicyclist with his pickup and fleeing the scene has been found guilty, according to court documents.

Butte County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Merrifield on Thursday found Anthony Abuanbar, 38, guilty of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the September death of 53-year-old Michael Cesspooch of Marysville, according to the documents.

Oroville >> An August trial has been scheduled for an Oroville man accused of accidentally shooting his friend to death during a night of partying and driving around Oroville, according to court documents.

Butte County Superior Court Judge Robert Glusman on Wednesday scheduled the trial for Noah Gonzales, 25, to begin Aug.

Chico >> Chico State University has received another recognition for its sustainability efforts, this time earning the highest score awarded to any CSU school.

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education awarded the university a gold rating for its overall sustainability efforts on campus with a score of 73.

Butte Creek Canyon will celebrate its heritage Sunday with two annual events.

First will be the Honey Run Covered Bridge 53rd annual pancake breakfast, 8-11 a.m. on the bridge. Breakfast is $8, or $5 for kids under 12.

Parking is free.

There will be raffle drawings and music by the Pub Scouts.
