Valid

Kristen and Loïc are from two different worlds, she’s a Canadian living in Kuwait, he’s from France. Their relationship has taken them many places, from North America to Europe and beyond.  Each of their relationship milestones take place in different countries, so it’s fitting that they get married in Canada… a country neither of them currently reside.

Of course, planning a wedding from across the world — particularly with families in two different countries — was not going to be an easy task. But this couple pulled it off beautifully, creating a ceremony that honoured their interests, their families and their love for one another.

They started with a simple, nature-inspired colour palette: greens and browns in honour of Loïc’s love of the outdoors, and blues that reminded Kristen of the summers she spent picking blueberries with her family in Ottawa. Mismatched furniture and dinnerware added to the rustic, all-natural feeling of the evening and added a little quirky charm! Even the couple’s wedding bands were a nod to the nature theme, as they were made from Loïc’s grandparents’ rings and an antler he’d received as a gift from his grandfather.

After the ceremony, the couple opened the reception with their first dance as husband and wife. They danced to an acoustic rendition of “How Sweet It Is” by Wire and Wood — a song that sounds perfect for these two, given how sweet and kind they are! While planning this wedding may have taken a lot of hard work, it was clear that Kristen and Loïc were enjoying every moment together.

There are ] SO MANY beautiful venues and locations to get married in Vancouver, BC that it was difficult to make this list. The following list reflects my favourite venues to shoot at, purely from a photography perspective. For me, an ideal wedding takes place at the same location – ceremony, portraits and reception on the same grounds. Without travel time, I have more time to shoot.

Check out Part One – read about some very unique locations.

Best wedding locations in Vancouver, BC for Photographers Hycroft Manor

The University Women’s Club of Vancouver’s Hycroft Manor is one of my favourite places to shoot because of  the classic and romantic shooting locations. There are staircases that look centuries old, romanesque gardens, 50 foot high ivy covered columns and a multi-wing traditionally decorated house to shoot throughout – each room has it’s own style and unique decorations. Recent Wedding: https://www.carolinephotography.ca/hycroft-manor-wedding-vancouver/

    UBC Botanical Gardens

UBC Botanical Gardens features a thick green covered arbour that wedding guests can enjoy dinner under. An adjourning grassy area is perfect for the dance floor, ceremony and rain tent. The photographer has use of the gardens for the wedding photos, including the lush tropical areas. I really like the walk into the reception and ceremony area – the guests walk through the Asian gardens and through a moon gate tunnel into the BC rainforest. Also the gardens have golf carts to help you bring all your lighting equipment. Recent wedding at UBC Botanical Gardens: https://www.carolinephotography.ca/ubc-botanical-garden-wedding/

    Rowenas Inn on the Lake

One of my favourite venues… Rowena’s Inn on the Lake gives guests and family members a relaxing vacation on a peaceful golf course. The heritage house had many classic rooms to shoot in and the guest got to mingle by the pool with mountains  in the distance.

    Grouse Mountain

Grouse Mountain is the perfect wedding venue for all the hikers and Grouse Grinders out there that met each other through an outdoor meetup. The background for the wedding has the gondola, mountains and city and the photo opportunities and locations are endless. I love Grouse Mountain for weddings because the guests get to watch the unbelievable sunset during dinner and speeches. Also, the unique transportation up the gondola is pretty spectacular as well!

    Backyard Weddings

My favourite weddings are backyard weddings.  I know some venues aren’t available to the public, however there are some really beautiful houses on AirBNB available for smaller weddings. I like backyard weddings because it reminds me of my own families weddings… My mom spends hours making sure the backyard garden is pretty, all the guys in the family come over and help put up the tent and lights and decorations and we sit down to a catered BBQ with a homemade cake for dessert, dancing and celebrating under the open night sky. It’s really unique to have a location that is personal to the wedding couple, and I also love it when the ceremony and reception take place in one location.

The wedding shown in the photos is in a heritage house in South Granville and the photos were done around the neighbourhood.

Tips for shooting details – Use the bridesmaids dresses as a background

I usually use the bridesmaids dress as a background to shoot the details on. Final result

It works great because the bridesmaids dresses are the colour(s) of the wedding and normally have great texture and ribbons that you can also use in the collage. You can also use the bridesmaids dress or brides dress or veil to shoot details individually, like the shoes, and I really like using buttons to prop up the rings!

Hana’s enthusiasm for the wedding was contagious and I found myself anticipating her Hycroft Manor wedding months in advance. I loved hearing about all her beautiful Juliette veil, multiple dresses and unique etsy vendors. Hana picked the perfect venue at Hycroft Manor to match her graceful style, this venue is rich with history and romance. Every inch of this place was a dream to shoot in, from the vine covered statues, time-worn stone staircases to the  beautiful decorated interior. In addition to these marvellous details and stunning location, the bride had vegan options for every course for the dinner – the vegan coconut milk pana cotta was unreal!

The wedding was planned by the bride and groom and Coordinator by Clair Hsieh.  The whole day took place at the University Women’s Club of Vancouver at Hycroft Manor with event Manager Rebekah Snelling. The charismatic Officiant was Marilyn Knipp from  Young, Hip & Married. Both of the brides dresses were designed and made by Tatiana Filat at Lidia’s Boutique and the stunning Juliette Veil was from Etsy seller Sibo Designs.  The bride and groom had a stunning first dance choreographed by Delphine Leroux at First Dance Vancouver,  the evening photo booth and DJ was provided by the multi talented Dynamic Weddings.

Renee and Pre got married at Stonefields Estate in Ottawa, Ontario. These two had a lot going on in the past year… a cross-country move, new puppy, first house purchase and a baby boy on the way! They still had time to plan this classy barn wedding complete with chandeliers, a Daalarna Couture gown and tear filled speeches. The bride and groom chose chose Stonefields Estate, on the outskirts of Ottawa, to host their wedding because Ottawa is where they first met.  Read their Ottawa love story here.

Renee and Pre met online and both were nervous for their first meet up. Renee was quite late and right before Pre was about to leave, she walked in, flustered about not being able to find parking. Pre, as usual, was early. Despite their differences in punctuality, both of them knew it was the last first date they would ever be on.

One of my favourite parts of this wedding was the speeches. Renee had everyone in the barn tearing up as she barely made it through between chest heaving sobs. The MC for the evening was the bride’s dad, who kept everyone entertained with lots of embarrassing childhood stories. Both the bride and groom were loved by many, with the groom’s family and friends from all over the world attending, including parents from Vancouver and a special Aunt from South Africa.

One of my favourite things about living in Vancouver is the city’s proximity to nature, and its extended seasons. We have multiple inner city beaches, stunning vies of the mountains and within 20 minutes you can be in hiking in the middle of some of the worlds most beautiful forests. This quintessential Vancouver engagement session took place is late November, and started at the couples home and we made our way to third beach in Stanley Park.
