I enjoy bringing things back to life by identifying the undermining factors, eradicating them and helping small businesses rekindle their vitality. In my search for fresh ways of bookkeeping & accounting I test new ideas on my own business. My search for easier, faster, accurate data processing has led me to technology driven bookkeeping and record keeping.
As a stay at home mum, starting a cloud bookkeeping business, has given me back so much more time for myself and my family.
And the great news is, anyone can learn to have their own home consulting, coaching, administration, bookkeeping or virtual assistant business just like I’ve created..
There will be scary moments as you become open to new ideas and beliefs, but it’s a journey of personal growth as well as essential for your financial freedom..
After a long career, I’ve embraced the idea it’s my duty to share the secrets to managing my own multi national 100% cloud bookkeeping and education business with entrepreneurial women, who are dissatisfied with their current lifestyle.
I’ve worked with hundreds of different companies ranging in size from payroll of 1 to payroll of 100.
Now I’ve documented and recorded the processes, distilled from my two decades experience, so you can get straight to the profits without the time consuming and frustrating trial and error.
In this episode we’ll discuss the exact steps to starting your own business and some of the tools we love.
I chose this topic today so you can:

3 Steps to Selling Your Knowledge
Step 1: Determine Your Price Offer
Ok so let’s start at the beginning. What will you sell and for how much? You could start with just selling an hour of your time or some other product you’ve already created. Whatever you do though, starting is the most important step. Visualise where you want to be in 12 months time and keep that as motivation. For help with your business plan and aligning what you offer with your lifestyle goals, watch our free business planning masterclass here.
Step 2: Let People Know Your Doors Are Open For Business And Start Building An Email List
OK let’s setup your first business page or website. If you’re just getting started, kick off with a Facebook business page and invite your friends and family to like your page! To learn how we batch up 30 days worth of posts in one day watch this mini masterclass. Using friendly tech tools like Planoly and Buffer can have you everywhere without spending hours every day on social media.
You’ll need to choose a name for your social media platforms. If you like things to be simple and tidy, try and find a handle that’s the same on all your platforms eg we have @bluecloudbookkeeping for both our Facebook and Instagram and Website and it’s also our business trading name.
Once you have some email addresses, you’ll need to store them all together in a safe place. We recommend starting with a MailChimp account. It’s free to get started and you can use their templates to make announcements and automated email sequences easily, without being a tech expert.
Mailchimp is great too, because you can connect your Mailchimp opt-in link with your Facebook page. That way your interested followers can join your email list directly from your Facebook page.
Step 3: Write and share your tips, tricks and shortcuts!
OK so now we’re going to cast a wide net to attract people to your landing page, but how???
First we give your followers some useful tips, tricks and shortcuts.
But please, stay away from detailed instructions. Details might make you look smart, but your customers just need simplicity. Plus just about everything is described in detail on the internet for free.
What they need to hear are your experiences, stories and how these changes made you feel and transform from blah to awesomeness.
But what if you don’t know what to talk about? I’ll share a couple of my go to back up plans when I’ve got blank paper staring back at me.
Visit www.answerthepublic.com and enter your area of knowledge. It’ll then give you some frequently searched questions on your topic.
Be inspired by the chapters inside one of your favourite books on the topic you’re discussing.
Look at your competitors blog and rewrite in your own words similar topics but take it from a 5 star post to a 7 star post. Add images, inspirational quotes and stories of your experiences.
Create an educational video and share it on YouTube or Facebook. The beauty of YouTube videos is they can work for you for free driving consistent traffic to your business page and they don’t need to be fancy. See here one of my early how to YouTube videos. Google “How To Apply For An ABN in Australia” Click on “Videos” and you might see this video I made appear at the no 1 position.
My top YouTube tips are to deliver the steps straight away and not waffle about yourself in the first 8 seconds. To have the name of the video title in the video itself, the video title and the video description. And finally to answer comments made on your video.
How was that? Not too scary. Chunking a big project into smaller steps can make light work of trying something new.

Have you felt pressured into hustling but want to love your work at your own pace? I don’t know about you, but I hate being rushed into anything. I like to notice what’s going on around me. I like to ask questions and learn new stuff from people who are accessible. The great news is, you can design a business model, that uses tech, so you can stop doing everything manually to the point of exhaustion.
Most of us have been brought up in the “you have to work hard” era. Where to make more profits employees needed to work quietly. They had to work without errors. They had to work physically faster. They had to follow the rules. They were not to use their creativity. They just had to get it done. We were educated to wear the uniform and only take directions from above.
The problem is if you go into entrepreneurship with these habits, your business won’t work. Entrepreneurs need to take a stand for what they believe in, not sit quietly waiting for permission. Entrepreneurs break the rules for their industry and are the leaders of innovation. Entrepreneurs use courage and automation so work is done faster. We are deep in the tech era. Machines can do tedious repetitive manual tasks faster than anyone. Creativity is essential for business. Customers want the human touch and want to know the face behind the brand. Finance and tax compliance is becoming more automated and legislation is now making it mandatory for Australian and New Zealand employers to record their payroll electronically. Using your phone or laptop to run your business isn’t just the cool thing to do, it’s how you stay competitive.
Others in your industry are 100% digital, have automated payment collection and invoicing, have apps tracking their bills and use paperless payroll to stay on top of their compliance responsibilities and this saves them time and money at the end of financial year.
Have you been burnt out in the past and are now looking for the path of least resistance?
If you’re like me, you may have followed the pattern, finish school, get a degree, join a firm, work long hours, rinse and repeat. Friday you’d finish the week with drinking and discussing red BMWs. Been there done that DGAF about having a red BMW anymore unlike my 21 year old self.
Life has taught me that what matters is being with the people you love most, doing what you enjoy doing, while contributing to a better future for everyone. If you have 10 minutes today, write on a piece of paper who you love spending time with. What do they love doing and what do you love doing. For me I love spending time with my husband and two sons. They love football & rugby so I go to football and rugby with them. I love going to the beach and going to coffee shops locally and overseas. If I’m not travelling I’ll go to my local beach or coffee shop with my sons and husband. It’s pretty simple to enjoy life if you know what you like doing. When it comes to leaving the world in a better state than I found it, we support World Vision Australia and generate resources for our Finance Squad Freebie library. Our free finance resources have been used by over 20,000 people in just the past couple of years and it just keeps growing. Everyone deserves to know how to make money and build a business they love.
I read somewhere that a physical object will give you pleasure for about 9 months. Have you noticed that something you really wanted to buy did that for you? I noticed this while living in Japan. While our possessions were in storage for a year in Australia, I really didn’t miss most of them. And when we returned to Australia, I felt sick at all the consumer possessions I’d accumulated. Our Japanese friends focused more on spending the weekend at the sauna/onsen, seeing festivals, eating out and wearing nice clothes than having big homes and fast cars. It was such a great way to live. When we returned to Australia I decided to sell a lot of the excess we had. After decluttering my physical surroundings I was able to declutter my money model.
Are you stuck trying all the things spending your energy in so many directions it’s exhausting you? I hear ya. When I started consulting I’d accept any type of business on any type of software in any suburb of Sydney. It was frenetic and dissatisfying. Unlike now I only offer a fixed price done for you monthly fee or a fixed price learn it yourself program. We only use the best tools for setting up the tech for passive income streams because if it’s not fun and easy I won’t want to stick with it.
I teach the digital money model that allows people to save time and spend more on what they love doing.
Are you investing in working in your zone of genius? All of us have something to offer other people. When you think about what you love doing, the things you’re good at and what people ask you to help them with, you’ll discover an overlap and this is your zone of genius. The business model you use to monetize your zone of genius will differ depending on the personality you have and the way you feel comfortable selling. If you’re an introvert you may prefer to sell online via and automated online membership or an online course. If you’re an extrovert you may enjoy doing face to face consulting or selling from stage. There are so many options to how you design the right business model that suits your unique strengths and preferences, it really becomes a journey to knowing yourself as a person as well as a business owner.
Are you ready to create your dream life without burning out? You already ready know the life you want and the dreams for yourself and your kids. It’s just a matter of taking the first step. If you’re ready to create the dream life without burning out then I can help. I’ll guide you through starting your own business, setting up the foundations for GST & payroll compliance in Australia and New Zealand and show you how to setup the tech for passive income from online courses and membership sites. So what is passive income?
Have you decided you want passive income streams because health wise you can’t work 40 hours a week anymore? Passive income was traditionally investing in property and shares that grew in value over time. Now it also includes having a business model that makes money for you 24/7.
Here are my ingredients for a digital passive income business model
You have a product or service that solves a problem for your ideal customer
You have automated billing, invoicing and payment collection
You have automated marketing advertising collecting leads and generating sales
You have a platform that stores your product/ service or membership
You earn money in the form of affiliate commission from business partners
You earn money from sponsors of your blog, podcast or website
You have referral money and commissions coming in from past clients and business partners who refer sales to you for a commission.
If this business model sounds up your alley or if you’ve been burnt out in the past and think business should be more aligned with your energy, then you’re invited to join our Business Growth Workshop. It’s completely free and is offered to give you more clarity towards the business model that would suit you and your preferences for selling.

Xero is literally the MOST powerful business platform to help you efficiently manage your business. BUT. Guessing your numbers with no accounting training behind you WON’T help you stay on top of your profits, get paid fast and keep suppliers and team happy which you oh-so-badly desire.
So what can a small business owner head high in paperwork do?
– How exactly can you skip the frustration that comes with lack of processes and simple routines?
– How do you STRATEGICALLY systemise your income processes so you can maintain steady stress free cash flow month to month?
– And how do you do your accounting right the first time so you can DOMINATE the boardroom, get more value from your accountant and spend less time paying bookkeepers to correct your paperwork errors over and over?
These are the exact questions I answer in Small Business Money Management, a simple yet strategic way for you to get on track your numbers with XERO, and stop wasting your time guessing the steps that just increase the mess for your accountant (who’s charging you hourly… eeeek!)
You’ll learn how to go from XERO newbie to board- room bad -ass.
The first step to finding your value driven purpose in life is to have the courage to question what you currently believe to be true. Our parents have passed on their beliefs to us and their parents passed on beliefs to them.
Sometimes it’s only through, travelling the world, meeting new people, and hearing different beliefs that we start to question our own beliefs in life.
So how does this impact on your life and your business? Massively.
If you believe something, that drives your thoughts and voice.
It’s only a matter of time that you’ll notice events to back up your beliefs.
For example, a few months ago my car needed to be at the mechanic for a few weeks and we started looking at buying a new car to replace it. I decided I wanted an electric car because I believed it’d save us money in the long run as well as align with my partners career in renewable energy. So we looked at some Nissan electric cars locally and online. The following week I was asking people at my gym if they liked their electric car. From that day on, I noticed so many more electric cars on the road and electric cars being recharged on the street. So many sightings I hadn’t had prior to my car going into the mechanics.
Was that a coincidence? No, it’s been discussed in great depth that our beliefs and thoughts drive how we feel and what we see. We are filtering to back up and justify our beliefs.
It’s like the story of the woman who cut the ends off her roast dinner every time she made a roast. Her daughter copied this action from her mother and then one day the granddaughter asked, “why did you cut the ends off your roast before putting it in the oven Grandma?” To which she answered, because the full size roast didn’t fit in the baking dish I had at the time.
Just because somethings always been done that way, doesn’t mean it’s the best way for you.
Working with small business owners, I come across out dated business habits and tools that are costing people time and money.
It’s super important today for us to stay on top of our beliefs and change our minds when our beliefs are no longer making us happy and fulfilled.
“I changed my mind.” It’s a powerful answer to explain why you no longer do things like that.
Recently a tradesman asked me to teach him how to setup and use XERO accounting software. One of the main issues upsetting him in his business was that it was taking him a long time to get paid. I asked him why he allowed his customers 50 day credit terms on the invoice and he said, people in his industry have always given until the 20th of the following month to pay their invoice. He believed this was true and so it was taking him sometimes 50 days or more to get paid.
While there are other small business owners who decided their payment terms were same day payment. They get paid on the same day they deliver their service. They believe they should be paid on the day they do the work.
Designing your business based on your beliefs can flow through to your satisfaction at work every day. Take the time to write down what you believe and then notice if that belief is helping your business or hindering your ability to grow. Really question if your belief is 100% true 100% of the time.
Our Small Business Money Management program is designed to update the habits of small business owners who are dissatisfied with their money flow, using award winning tech tools and simple steps laid in sequence.
Changing your mind around your beliefs can dramatically improve your quality of life and the growth of your business.
Nigella Express, Simplicious, Your Dinner Is Planned, The Green Grocers Diet…oh my! There’s so SO much I love about food and cookery books. I’m crazy about the way I use cookery books as a source of reading pleasure as well as practical solutions to that ominous question every night, “what’s for dinner?
My one true passion in life, is baking, as inherited watching my mum make profiteroles and custard creme, a Vietnamese sweet tradition.
Nowadays flicking through my cook book collection, for me, is a self pleasing escape I enjoy when I go down the #whatcanwebake rabbit hole with my kids. [Quietly encouraging them to request something I WANT to satisfy my sweet tooth without taking all the blame for the 9000 calories about to be greedily devoured!]
Honestly, there are days though when getting dinner ready makes me want to lay down and start sobbing. In those moments of #NotHappyJan the Your Dinner Is Planned weekly dinner plan is like a warm hug! When I consider how difficult it is to start meal planning on a budget in between 3pm when I collect the kids from school and 5.30pm when everyone starts raiding the pantry and eating bananas, opening the app is a no brainer!
There’s nothing like a hungry child to give you that boost you need to get dinner planned pronto.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN MEAL PLANNING
When meal planning on a budget I like to stick to a shopping list directly matched to recipes. It sounds so obvious, but this is the reason I was wasting money and food every week. The items in my shopping cart didn’t belong to any one meal. I think we can all admit to being guilty of a green slush forming in our crisper drawers, the main offender being spinach in my house.
I also buy the bulk of food on a per kilo price. Pre packaged and pre perpared foods can be up to $45 per kilo in price such as museli bars and snacks. One quick snack that won’t break the bank is hummus and carrot sticks.
1 tin chick peas
1 tbs peanut butter
Juice half lemon
Olive oil to reach desired consistency
I throw them all together into the processor and there you have a quick snack!
I also need a few fall back recipes when my kids are super hungry and need something fast. This involves Miso paste, which can seem quick expensive but a little goes a long way. For those times I give them my version of 2 minute noodles
packet udon noodles
1 litre water
1 tbsp Japanese miso paste
1 beef stock cube
Dash of sesame oil
Bring to the boil and simmer for 2 minutes.
Allow to cool slightly before serving.
HOW TO MEAL PLAN ON A BUDGET
Before I discovered Your Dinner Is Planned, I’d tried tagging recipes in books with post it notes and photographing ingredient lists and just winging a $250 grocery shop and hoping it somehow equated to 5 diners and 5 school lunches….
Most days I was so un-organised I’d buy my lunch at $14 per day on average and instead of having healthy after school snacks ready, I’d take the kids to sushi. It wasn’t until I audited my own food spending I realised with shock I’d been spending on average $80 per week on sushi. What with the mayonnaise options I was choosing, wasn’t really all that healthy in the end. On top of that I’d end up visiting the supermarket for dinner supplies sometimes 3 times a week. The time spent wandering the aisles waiting for divine inspiration was eating away at my ME time.
My go to shopping quick fix for school lunch supplies is
By chance I stumbled upon Jazzy, the founder of Your Dinner Is Planned, while attending a software training class. She was involved in a demonstration I was watching online. Afterwards I visited her website. It sounded too good to be true. The answers to all my end of day hunger woes. I hung on her every word and then within moments I was a happy customer of Your Dinner Is Planned … YAY I became hooked.
Instead of hoping my shopping trolley of randomness would create a meal I was able to trust Jazzy had the plan sorted and I’d flip open the YDIP app shopping list as I grabbed my shopping trolley.
Yes I could now smugly present a meal on the table that included multiple fresh herbs and vegetables and exotic (to me) ingredients occasionally, such as our newfound favourite sauce “chipotle sauce”.
Being an Australian I’d never come across this sauce before, a magically smoky spicy flavoured Mexican delight. To my astonishment the local supermarket stocked it! #winning Jim now has one bottle for his desk at work and I maintain my stash in our frig at home.
I’m def no expert when it comes to nutrition so I asked my friend Peter to contribute:
As a health and movement coach working with
thousands of clients across the globe common feedback I get is about lack of
time to cook meals and in particular the inability to plan healthy meals to get
the results my clients desire. This led me to design a program which includes
meal plans, shopping lists and tips which include simple, healthy meals that burn
Today’s meal tip comes from just that – ‘What to Cook When There’s Nothing in the House to Eat’? Often we have core ingredients in the
cupboard or fridge but after a long day at work you are not inspired to create,
So today’s meal tip is – Let’s make Breakfast for Dinner.
One simple hack for those wanting to be
efficient and pull together a simple meal is to prepare breakfast for dinner.
One of our communities favourite breakkie item is the egg as it’s a versatile
ingredient and is very good for the body.
Something we often eat in our house is
pancakes. The recipe we use is simply 1 banana and two eggs blended for 1 serve.
We add a teaspoon of psyllium husk which is a natural
thickener and adds texture. It’s proven to reduce constipation and studies have
shown when consumed with meals it increases fullness and
reduces appetite sensation, resulting
in weight loss.
My wife likes to flavor the pancakes with a tablespoon
of chocolate protein powder to turn them in to dessert pancakes. She adds some
beautiful stewed stone fruit or fresh, sliced strawberries and banana and
whalaa! Or if you’d prefer, eat them as
a savoury meal with some stirfried vegetables, some steamed greens or with some
delicious fresh fish.
Another favourite breakkie for dinner meal
is smashed avocado with a poached egg on wholemeal bread with tomatoes,
mushroom and bok choy sprinkled with Himalayan rock
salt and a squeeze of lemon. Sour dough bread is a healthier option and I’d
suggest using coconut oil to cook with. Coconut oil is
high in healthy saturated fats that have greater effects than most other oils in
our eating plans. These fats can boost fat burning and provide
your body and brain with quick energy. They also raise the
good HDL cholesterol in your blood, which is linked to
reduced heart disease risk.
Why Eggs? The real benefits of the egg is
the protein as it is an essential part of any eating plan. Today’s society
consumes too many carbohydrates and fats and not enough proteins. This has led
to an increase in unwanted body fat and related health problems.
Protein is essential for healthy cell
production, organ health, hair, skin and nails (not just muscles). Protein also
helps to make you feel fuller. It also helps to regulate the blood sugar
fluctuations that people get from eating too many refined carbohydrates.
Consequently, it’s very beneficial for
diabetics and anyone experiencing low energy, mood swings and depression. This
is especially important for helping children with behavioural disorders. Blood
sugar fluctuations are a major contributing factor to their mood swings.
Thanks for your time. Here is a simple dish
from the My Body Self Care program that everyone in the family will enjoy and
can be done in only 20 minutes.
Breakfast – BAKED BACON &
1 ½ rashers
Bacon – chopped finely
Capsicum – finely chopped
Button mushrooms or 2 medium mushrooms –
1 tbsp (15 ml)
1 tbsp (15 ml)
Tasty cheese – grated
1 tbsp (15 ml)
oven to 190C. Lightly oil 1 cup (250 ml) oven proof dish. Heat oil in a fry pan
and stir fry capsicum and bacon for approx. 1 minute. Add mushrooms and onion,
stirring until onion softens. Remove from heat and combine ½ cheese.
mixture into oven dish; carefully breaks eggs on top of mixture. Place in oven
and bake for 5 minutes. Sprinkle remaining cheese over eggs and bake for about
5 mins. If you like your eggs runny take out when white is set. Serve with a
sprinkle of parsley, salt and pepper to taste.
Your Dinner Is Planned makes life so much easier! Seriously, Jim and I love the variety and each night he asks, who’s this one? It’s a sort of game we have now at dinner, the answer is usually a Jazzy special or a Nigella classic. And should the nights’ dinner prep leave me less than inspired, I pass my iPhone to Jim to follow Jazzys directions. More than anything, Your Dinner Is Planned is forcing me to eat and serve more vegetables and less processed sugar filled foods to my family. Something I’m especially happy about.
Now by filling our tummies with more raw foods and nutritious meals, my health and strength and alertness during the day is perking right up!
My friend, and fellow mumpreneur, Suzanne Duncan Published author gave me a fab tip… “my approach to meal preparation is to plan on a Sunday for the following week and then cycle through the exact plan again the following week. Plan eat repeat and include left overs that can be used for lunches or for extra food for very hungry teenagers!!”
What about you? When it comes to meal planning, what are your favorite ways to stay on top of it all?
