Finding a Way to Open the Door that’s Closed and Slammed Shut Shop on Ebay Being a Black entrepreneur comes with a whole additional set of challenges. We don’t often have the access to the corporate decision-makers like our white counterparts do and we have to be excellent at selling our own brands because nobody else is going to have the passion. We also have to be OUTRAGEOUSLY creative if we are going to succeed. We’re are dealing with people who don’t deal with us when it comes to business and they don’t often use us as a part of their teams. To that end these days those concepts are changing as a corporation that sells to the masses is looked down upon if they don’t have diversity. For many, the safest bet is a black woman in the upper management positions because black men are still looked at as ‘threats.’ But at least the door is opening for black women and they certainly deserve those positions. Where does that leave the black male entrepreneur? It’s an incredible struggle but it is easier for gay black men to have doors open. GBM’s are not seen as much of a threat or as “angry” as straight black men. Finally, there is often a problem with us dealing with each other, as a whole, in the community when it comes to black business so the lack of support is at times overwhelming.. There are black people at corporations who could open doors for us but for whatever reason, refuse, many times for petty reasons or they may just believe if they can’t have it we cant either, it’s just the often overshadowing lack of respect for black business not just from white people but from black people too. The question becomes how do you motivate yourself and become successful with so many challenges? Think do and be BIGGER and BETTER. I have gotten a LOT of inspiration from some of the most unlikely places … movies. Here are my favorites that have contributed to my success in business. Enjoy The Matrix (original) 1999   Your Greatest Enemy and Friend … is YOU I have probably seen The Matrix (original version) 20 times over the last 19 years. There are SO many incredible messages in this movie not just for the entrepreneur but about life. I told another friend who also loves the movie as much as I do, and is an entrepreneur that this is damn near a cult movie for entrepreneurs. At least those who get it. Everything about this movie was stellar to the ones that followed especially the cast. The movie is about an extremely bored tech employee who is living beneath his potential. He circumvents his boredom by hacking computer systems and selling the information illegally and he goes to a job he hates each day. His life is forever changed when his computer alerts him to an opportunity to do what he has been dreaming about forever, to meet Morpheus. The original Oracle, played by Gloria Foster was in the first two movies but the legendary actress died from complications of Diabetes before the third movie could be completed and she was replaced. What black entrepreneur could not relate to her character in the first movie? We’ve seen this woman growing up hundreds of times. The best exchange between her and Neo? In the kitchen in the projects: “Don’t worry about the vase.” Neo, “What vase?” He turns and knocks it over, “That one” He apologizes profusely for breaking it and she says “I said don’t worry about it” then she says “What’s really going to bake your noodle is would you have broken it if I hadn’t said anything? Entrepreneur lesson? Do we think for ourselves are we controlled by the thoughts of others if they determine who we are how will we ever know our full potential? One of the other favorite scenes is when Neo is in the car and Trinity is trying to remove the bug from his navel but Switch offers a negative response and tells him “It’s our way of the highway.” Neo is about to walk away from an opportunity when Trinity interrupts and says “You’ve been down that road before, you know where it begins and where it ends.” Neo looks at the road and decides he wants something more out of life and stays. If you have not seen the movie see it but in the end, Neo discovers the person he was looking for to change his life … was him. The Founder – 2016   Do you want to work yourself to death or build a legacy that Outlives You? Unfortunately, the movie flopped but this is an EXCELLENT movie for ALL entrepreneurs new and old to see. Ray Kroc is a frustrated milkshake machine salesman who feels over the hill at 52. He has had many ideas over the years and has repeatedly failed at trying his luck as an entrepreneur. He comes across a hamburger show owner who wants to order 9 of his machines in California and he thinks it’s a joke since he has not been able to sell any of his machines. He drives down to meet the owners to take the machines and he is floored at the great concept the owners have with people waiting in line to get their burgers and the precise way the burgers are made. The owners who are also older are tired and settled are extremely strategic in running the one operation but Ray sees something much bigger. I won’t give you all the details but I will say that Ray had something the brothers didn’t have VISION. They wanted to die running the one shop but Ray saw the potential for a huge franchise. In the end, Ray ended up owning the McDonald’s brand to the brother’s chagrin but when you see what he was up against you actually root for him. SEE

MBDA to Award More Than $11 Million For Innovative Proposals Shop on Ebay Agency Releases FY 2018 Broad Agency Announcement, Funding Grants for Minority Business Development WASHINGTON (June 12, 2018) —Today, the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) within the Department of Commerce launched a search for innovative ideas to benefit minority-owned businesses, from projects that increase access to capital to resources that increase disaster preparedness and relief. MBDA’s Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) is designed to solicit proposals that will positively impact minority-owned businesses and the communities they serve. MBDA expects to award up to $11.65 million in grants to fund and implement innovative projects across the country. “Under the Trump Administration, the economy has seen unparalleled expansion while unemployment has fallen to the lowest level in nearly 50 years,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “Minority business enterprises play a key role in our expanding economy as they not only provide over seven million jobs in the United States but also contribute billions to the national GDP.” The BAA is open to for-profit entities (including but not limited to sole-proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability companies and corporations), non-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, commercial organizations, individuals, state and local government entities, or Indian Tribal governments. “We are excited to begin this year’s application process and look forward to receiving the proposals,” said Acting National Director Edith McCloud. “Minority-owned businesses contribute greatly to our economy, and through the BAA, we can work to meet the needs of this community with the ultimate goals of continued expansion, growth and job creation.” The focal points of the BAAs are aligned with the Agency’s key priorities in support of minority-owned businesses. Priorities include: Access to Capital American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian Entities and/or Initiatives Aquaculture Disaster Readiness Disaster Recovery Entrepreneurship Education Program for Formerly Incarcerated Persons Global Minority Women Economic Empowerment Initiative Historically Black Colleges & Universities Initiative Inclusive Infrastructure Initiative Research Space Commerce Sustainable Business Model Technology Transfer and Commercialization Virtual Business Centers New this year, MBDA included BAA categories for formerly incarcerated persons and research projects to quantify and address the needs and challenges of minority-owned businesses. Recognizing the critical role of entrepreneurship in reducing recidivism and unemployment for released prisoners, the Agency saw an opportunity to support the Department of Commerce’s efforts to reduce crime, enhance public safety and improve the lives of all Americans through educational entrepreneurship programs. Two pre-application teleconferences to educate potential applicants about the federal funding opportunity announcement are scheduled for June 18 and 21, 2018 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm Eastern Time. MBDA encourages applicants to attend at least one of the pre-application teleconferences. The deadline to submit completed applications for the broad agency announcement is 11:59 pm Eastern Time on July 11, 2018. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications as soon as possible to receive funding for Fiscal Year 2018. For more information and to register for a pre-application teleconference visit https://www.mbda.gov/page/2018-mbda-broad-agency-announcement or https://www.mbda.gov/.
