Drivers who regularly battle winter weather and slippery road conditions will eventually find themselves in a precarious position where they lose control of their vehicle. Slipping on icy roads is inevitable, even when driving slowly and the best thing that drivers can do is not panic. Learn more about how to correct a skid safely below.

[Read More: Always keep these items in your car in case of emergency]

Slippery Roads? Don’t Panic: 3 Tips for Correcting a Skid Don’t Brake

Many people’s first instinct is to hit the brakes when they start sliding or losing control. However, that could cause an even larger loss of control potentially leading the car into a different lane or even into the ditch. If possible, it’s best to just ride out the slide until the vehicle regains traction at which time you can pump the brakes if needed. If you must hit the brakes, pump them gently rather than keeping the brakes pressed firmly all the way down.

Don’t Overcorrect

When drivers start to panic, they often make sharp movements that jerk the vehicle into a spin. If your vehicle has started to fishtail or move out of its lane, you can slowly and gently steer it back into place. If your vehicle starts to spin, steer into the direction of the slide which should help you stay facing forward. If you notice that your vehicle is sliding in the opposite direction as before, you are likely overcorrecting and you should turn your wheel less.

Wait It Out

Other than steering gently into the direction of the skid if your vehicle starts to spin, there isn’t much else you can do but wait it out and see if you regain traction. Gently steer to avoid crossing into oncoming lanes and to avoid hitting another vehicle. It’s better to slide into the shoulder or even into a ditch assuming you are on flat ground than to end up in the opposite lane where you could be hit by a passing vehicle.

The best defense for safe winter driving is to slow your speed. Even though it’s impossible to avoid slipping and sliding entirely, any skids you do face will be much easier to control if your vehicle is moving slower and keeping a safe following distance.

Two Mazda Models, the compact 2019 Mazda CX-5 and mid-size 2019 Mazda CX-9, were recognized by Car and Driver on their annual 10 Best Trucks and SUVs list. See what Car and Driver highlighted about each of the Mazda models below.

[Read More: 2019 Mazda CX-5 Secures IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Rating]

Best Compact SUV Category: 2019 Mazda CX-5

“The Mazda CX-5 provides luxury-grade interior refinement at solidly nonluxury prices; ride and handling that feel sized up from a Miata, rather than dumbed down for mass-market appeal; and an exterior that bucks the boxy conventions of its segment in favor of something significantly more elegant. But most of all, there’s the sense that the CX-5 was designed for people like us – people who love to drive,” noted Car and Driver.

Best Mid-Size SUV Category: 2019 Mazda CX-9

“Nothing in this class can match the CX-9’s dynamic competence. It’s not even close, friends. If you need a three-row SUV, you will not find a better-driving, more satisfying one than the Mazda CX-9. Period. Take a gander at the flowing curves and taut lines of the CX-9. Inspect its tasteful adornment. Inside, you will find one of the most handsome arrangements of materials in the segment. A mass-market family vehicle needn’t look and feel like a plastic storage bin. And you need not pilot a rudderless barge down the shipping lanes of middle age,” noted Car and Driver.

The 2019 Mazda CX-5 and 2019 Mazda CX-9 lineups are available for car shoppers to see in person at the Bill Gatton Mazda dealership in Johnson City, TN.

Find out why your Smart City Brake Support light is on

It is always concerning when lights illuminate inside of your vehicle. Many warning lights mean you need vehicle maintenance. Contrastingly, the Smart City Brake Support warning light coming on may just mean you need to clean your vehicle’s exterior. So, what does it mean when the Smart City Support light is illuminated? Read on to find out possible reasons why your Smart City Brake Support light is illuminated.

Why does the Smart City Brake Support light illuminate?

There are a few different reasons that your Smart City Brake Support light can illuminate. Most of them are not worrisome. For starters, it may just light up during rain. This is because your vehicle can detect when your windshield is difficult to look through. Such as when it is covered in fog or rain. To combat this, simply turn on your wipers and defrost-setting.

Furthermore, the light may remain on if your windshield and front grille emblem are dirty. If they don’t turn off after using your wipers and defroster, simply do more to clear your windshield and check your front grille emblem for snow, ice, or dirt. If none of the above works, then it is time to take your vehicle in for a professional inspection. You can schedule an appointment with our professional service team to get your vehicle in the clear.
