I’m Sarah Anne, plus size blogger from Toronto, Canada. Big Hips, Red Lips is all things plus size fashion, body positivity and more. With a natural flair for pin up and cheek bones to die for, Sarah is so much more than big hips and red lips!
A few years ago, I was totally bonkers for berets. I owned one in just about every colour, but quickly realized I had no real occasion or outfit to suit them. Now, berets are back in style and I’ve been kicking myself for giving my impressive collection away. So, I took to Amazon fashion to replenish my stock and found a few for an incredibly affordable price. My only major gripe about an old trend coming back in style is how ridiculously expensive it suddenly becomes. I wasn’t about to pay $20 per hat. Thank God for Amazon Fashion!
While shopping, I decided to snag some clothes because well, that’s just who I am. Amazon fashion can be really scary to buy from but also a great resource for hidden gems. So long as you know how to search for what you’re specifically looking for, read the reviews and compare prices, its a goldmine.
As you can probably guess, I found this gem of a dress in my search. Believe it or not, I’ve been on a hunt for a dress just like this for awhile. I’m a sucker for a good collar, as you can probably tell. It took me all of 5 seconds to hit “add to cart” after getting the all clear from reading reviews.
I’ve mentioned this many times before, but I’m a huge fan of adding pops of colour to black & white ensembles. I already knew how I was going to accomplish that when this dress arrived. Red, white and black are such a classic combo and I knew I couldn’t go wrong. As you can see, I was right.
Ps, the quality of this dress is significantly nicer than I expected. The fabric is comfortable on the body, as well as slightly stretchy. I felt extremely comfortable in it at a size 18-20. I picked it up in the largest size available. Happy shopping!
Maybe you already know this, but I have a hard time styling purple. I literally have no idea why, but my brain just can’t compute the right way to put it into an outfit. However, when I spotted this Curvy Sense duster, I felt very compelled to give it a whirl. As it turns out, I might not be as hard as I anticipated. Additionally, it’s no different than styling other pastels. Who woulda thunk it?
I opted for a more casual ensemble this time around, even though I’m itching to use my duster with a fancier outfit. I knew I wanted most of the focus on the cardigan, so I kept my accessories and clothing choices toned down. Purple and gold made for a lovely colour combination, so I kept that my running theme throughout the whole look.
Would you like to see my revisit styling this duster in the future? Also, if you have your own tips for styling with a purple piece, please do let me know in the comments below!
Do you ever spend days planning an outfit in your mind…. or is that just me? That’s precisely what I did for a solid week (or two?) with this little number. I’ve had my heart set on styling my Be Nice sweater in an actual outfit since my Galentine’s Day themed photoshoot. Thankfully, the whole look translated perfectly in real life!
As I mentioned above, I’ve already featured Bando’s “Be Nice” sweater on my blog not long ago. They have quickly become one of my favourite places to shop, seeing as so much of their aesthetic fits my own. Whether I’m looking for an adorable statement top, or some cute accessories (ie: my bag), I know Bando will always have exactly what I’m looking for!
In terms of fit, I haven’t had an issue with sizing yet. Currently, I’ve tried a variety of tops, sweaters and a varsity style jacket and I’ve felt they were comfortable on my body. Typically, I’ll wear an XL-XXL and I’ve been a-ok! I doubt I’ve had any luck with bottoms though, so if you’re about my size or larger, I’d suggest staying away.
I’m back with another business appropriate outfit today! You guys loved my approach to plus size fashion workwear, so I figured I’d revisit the idea. As I mentioned, my work day looks a little different but I’ve always felt that being in an office space shouldn’t limit your creativity with fashion. Sometimes, its just adding bold accessories or adding some colour. Workwear doesn’t have to always be drab, mundane or boring.
As per my last outfit, black and white is the easiest colour combo to play up. Since I knew my mauve heels would go with my pants beautifully, I decided to accent my outfit with a muted colour. You don’t always have to do a big pop of colour like I did last time. Something more subtle can bring character just as much.
I’ve had these pants (leggings?) for awhile now, but even I run into roadblocks with styling garments sometimes. My friend Allie wears fancy pants all the time, and I’ll damn well admit that I’m jealous of her ability to effortlessly wear them. I’ve felt a little inspired to tackle them again, especially now that our weather is warming up. How did I do?
Ps, the blouse fits me perfectly at a size 18, as do the pants. ELOQUII typically fits me well at my usual size, so I wouldn’t suggest sizing up or down on either. If you couldn’t spot, the leggings have plenty of stretch and they’re super high waisted which makes for a very comfortable fit.
My day on the job might look a little different than a lot of people. Working for myself often means staying indoors, most times I’m wearing my “day time pjs” and I seldom get to stretch my office apparel muscles. Sometimes though, I like to work at a quiet coffee shop. Its pretty important to get outside when so much of your job requires you stay indoors and away from people. However, a few weeks ago, I made my way to Toronto for a full work day with my pal Erica and I took the opportunity to dress the part. Ps, she took these photos!
I’ve been really into combining black and white lately, which is a huge leap from my usual colour infested outfits. I couldn’t stay entirely away from colour though! I popped on my Society+ vest and took a good outfit to perfect. I don’t know about you, but this whole outfit is really working for me.
I could imagine myself wearing this to work on any given day. Its professional, commanding and still very much falls in line with my typical style. I’m digging trying to create more professional looks, since its so different from my usual approach to fashion. What are your thoughts? Would you like to see more outfits like this one?
Oof, its good to be back! I was having major issues with my domain for a few days and I’ve finally ironed that out. If you haven’t noticed, we’re now officially parked at TonsaBlush.com! I’m slowly moving towards rebranding completely to Tonsa Blush, and tackling my domain was one of the biggest steps. Everything will automatically redirect to the new domain if you’re trying to access BHRL.com!
Now that I’ve covered the logistics, let’s talk fashion! Valentine’s might have come and gone, but no so in my heart. My dear friend (and sometimes photographer) Chloe and I spent a very fancy Galentine’s day at local high tea. We’ve been talking about going for ages, and Galentine’s seemed like the perfect opportunity. If you’ve never been to high tea, I highly suggest it! The whole experience was magical, relaxing and I felt very regal the whole time.
As per usual, I had planned my outfit way ahead of time. One doesn’t simply go to high tea, you need to become high tea! Although we were definitely the most overdressed, I wouldn’t have toned it down for anything.
Unique Vintage created the most darling Valentine’s day collection and I just knew I wanted to wear something from the line. I settled on the heart printed high neck dress, which seemed exceptionally fitting for the occasion. Paired with a petticoat and my dramatically oversized, heart shape purse, the look came together! Ps, if you’d like to know a little bit more about the fit, check out my Unique Vintage haul.
Happy Galentine’s day from my gals to yours! If you’re unfamiliar with the term, you’ve probably been living under a rock, but I’ll explain it anyway. Galentine’s was brought to us by the one and only Leslie Knope of Parks & Rec. Its a day to celebrate our platonic lady friends and to show them how much they mean to us. Today, I’m celebrating not only my gals in the photos above, but all of my powerful female friends. I have found so much strength, wisdom and support through the bonds I’ve made with the women in my life. I owe them just about everything, and I don’t know where I’d be without them. You matter more to me than I could ever explain. Please take a moment to check out Allie, Erica and Chloe’s instagram pages!
I’d also like to thank Ban.do for partnering with us for this photoshoot. We’re all huge Ban.do fans, and we couldn’t have been more delighted to work with them. 99.9% of the props and clothing in this photoshoot came from Ban.do but I’ll be sure to link them all below. Follow the cut to see the rest of the photos AND find links to everything we’re wearing and using in the photoshoot. With all that being said, HAPPY GALENTINE’S!
Hi my loves! Its been too long since I’ve put together an OoTD for the blog, and I feel almost out of practice. Strange how I can spend a solid 5-7 years developing my style, only to “lose it” in a matter of 2 weeks. With that being said, I’m having fun putting together Valentine’s themed outfits. I can’t get enough of this holiday!
I wanted to do put together something a little sophisticated, but still obviously Valentine’s Day themed. I had plans to head to my local coffee shop for work, and I knew I wanted to dress up to motivate myself (spoiler alert: it didn’t work). My beauty themed blouse from Unique Vintage happens to be one of my favourite “professional with a twist” pieces, and this peplum skirt complimented it perfectly. Ps, do we miss the peplum trend? I was always a fan, and that feeling came rushing back when I slipped into my skirt.
LOVE is in the air, my dears and I’m soaking it all up. If you didn’t know, Valentine’s day is my absolute favourite holiday. Yes, thats right, I like it more than Christmas and its mostly because of all the cute, heart themed stuff that hits the selves. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find the best places to find thee best V-day themed pieces and I figured some of you out there would appreciate a break down as well. So, without further ado, here’s 12 places to shop this Valentine’s day!
Modcloth: Go figure I’d start with Modcloth, right? They’re always so great with executing novelty themed pieces and Valentine’s is simply no excuse. So many of my must have Valentine’s Day pieces are on this site alone. Whether you’re looking for a heart printed dress, or kitchy kitchen items, Modcloth’s got you covered!
Unique Vintage: Another absolute favourite year ’round but they sure do know how to do Valentine’s day right! I know I can always count on Unique Vintage to turn out some of the cutest retro inspired V-day pieces, and boy do I ever look forward to them. I was lucky enough to haul a bunch of pieces from UV’s Valentine’s collection, so keep an eye out on my channel for my little review!
Yandy: Of course, I couldn’t go without mentioning some lingerie! Even for the single people out there, I still think a lot of us want to look and feel sexy in some lingerie this time of year. So why not treat yourself to something sexy but also affordable? That’s why I love Yandy, because they combine the two so well. I mean heck, who doesn’t want to unwrap some lingerie on or off the body?
Ban.do: If you haven’t already heard of Ban.do, prepare to fall in love. Ban.do is most known for their stationary but they have some of the cutest clothing and accessories I’ve come across. As expected, they have done Valentine’s Day perfectly. Check out that “Strong Female Lead” top and the “Be Nice” tote. SO cute, so perfect for the big day!
Forever 21: Although lately I’m been on the fence with Forever 21, I still think they do a great novelty product line. I found some mighty cute Valetine’s Day pieces and for the time being, everything is 50% off! I’m not sure when the sale will end, but take advantage while you can. As for me, I’m grabbing that “Moody” top asap!
Torrid: Good ole Torrid, always coming to save the day! I know I can always count on one of my fav plus size stores to deliver the V-day goods. Whether you’re shopping for lingerie, accessories or clothing, Torrid has you covered. Ps, there isn’t a dedicated “Valentine’s day” section but if you search “hearts”, you’ll find the pieces I listed above. Pps, I filmed a haul featuring some of the pieces I listed above, so check it out if you want me little review on how they fit and more!
Eloquii: If you know me, you know I love Eloquii. As per usual, they offer a sophisticated take on Valentine’s Day attire. I’m such a huge fan of their unique take on just about everything they do, and thankfully Eloquii’s Valentine’s collection has my heart, too! Ps, did you know Eloquii released a lingerie collection? I was lucky enough to get my hands on a few pieces and they are just as classic and stunning as the rest of their clothing!
Lindy Bop: If you’re looking for that vintage inspired, affordable, Valentine’s ensemble, look no further than Lindy Bop. I genuinely always look forward to Lindy Bop’s release of Valentine’s Day clothing every single year. Even though we’re seeing a lot less heart printed items this time around, there are still so many adorable pieces I can’t wait to own. They also go up to a 6x (4x in US sizes), which is incredible and rare for vintage inspired clothing!
Adorned by Chi: Even though Adorned by Chi doesn’t have a dedicated Valentine’s Day line, I still wanted to mention them anyway. You can see above that a lot of the pastels and general aesthetic of the clothing and accessories fit my ideal Valentine’s Day aesthetic. I’ve been such a long time lurker, and I think this year I’ll become a first time customer. Ps, they go up to a 5x in most tops, so dig right in!
Society Plus: I’m just smitten with Society Plus, so I knew I’d have to keep a lookout for their Valentine’s day line. Society Plus has so many perfect date night looks that I’m dying to wear this holiday. Protip: Wear the red tutu as a petticoat to add an extra something to your V-day ensemble!
Amazon: I know that Amazon can be sort of overwhelming to navigate, but they have some treasures to find. So long as you search terms like “hearts”, “valentine’s” and related keywords, you can find what you’re looking for. Check out the gorgeous earrings, adorable sweater and bag, and beret I found just by dedicated some time to browsing. Ps, I have the heart sweater and it fits me in an XL!
Boohoo: Last but certainly not least it Boohoo. I know I can always count on them for an edgier approach to anything I’m in the market for. Personally, I’m eying everything above but I’d do terrible things for that “honey” sweater. Boohoo constantly has sales on their clothing, so I suggest keeping an eye out on the website!
I hope you liked like my list of places to shop this Valentine’s day. Of course, there are many more shops to check out, but maybe I’ll revisit this list again before the season is over. With that being said, happy spending!
I’m back (sort of)!!! I’ve been fighting off the flu so its been kinda hard to do any work, to say the least. Thankfully, I still had these photos laying around on my memory card and I figured I’d take this opportunity to post them.
You guys have asked me for my more casual looks, and for my own sanity, I’m going to start obliging. I’m not always overdone, perfectly executed Sarah Anne and the pressure to do so has really been depleting me of my energy and drive. Thus, I have decided 2018 will consist of a more realistic approach to fashion. What are your thoughts? (more photos & outfit details after the jump)
You’ll find me mostly in leggings these days as the weather dips below 0c again and the snow covers everything. Also, big chunky sweaters have been my life saver. On a less cold day, I’d wear this sweater as more of a dress because, guess what, life is about risks!
I call this my “business bitch” look; professional and powerful. Heels give me an extra kick in my step and demand attention when you walk into a room. The faux fur scarf is luxurious as hell, but also comfortable and warm. Last night not least, there’s something about having my hair pulled back that completes the look for me. If I wasn’t trying to keep this blog PG, I’d just name it my “business bitch” look all together.
