For centuries hammams (loosely translated from Arabic as “spreader of warmth”) have played a significant role in Moroccan culture. Hammams, serails, and rhassouls are all different types of steam rooms or baths used by Moroccans for their traditional cleansing rituals. At least once a week Moroccans visit a hammam to have an Arabian body treatment that involves steaming, scrubbing, and massaging the skin until it is smooth and glowing. In other parts of the world, hammams are also known as Turkish Baths, Roman Baths, Moroccan Steam Rooms or Moroccan Saunas.
Hammam Ritual History
A venerated Moroccan tradition, the hammam ritual spa treatment has endured for centuries and even today thousands of Moroccans still uphold the tradition of cleansing their bodies while socializing and joining in the local gossip. A traditional hammam consists of multiple dry and steam rooms for cleansing the body by another person according to an ancient ritual.
The first public bathhouse was created more than 2,000 years ago by the Roman Empire to encourage their citizens to keep themselves clean and practice good hygiene. The idea soon caught on and Morroco was the first to adopt the practice and turn it into a community ritual. Since religion forms an important part of Moroccan culture, the first hammams were built near prayer houses and it became almost mandatory to visit the hammam before prayer.
Basic Principles of the Hammam Ritual
The principles of the Hamman ritual requires the body to be cleansed from head to toe. In ancient times a visit to the baths started before the cleansing journey as the essential products like the black soap and kessa glove used for exfoliating the skin, and the massage oil first had to be purchased at the souk (market). Today all the essential materials are included in the experience for your convenience and enjoyment.
As the popularity of the hammams grew in popularity they became a gathering point where people from all social classes met to discuss anything they found interesting and share the latest gossip. The hammam became deeply rooted in the lives of everyone as the central place where important decisions were made like business deals or arranged marriages. Men and women bathed separately and bathers who partook of the purifying rituals were entirely naked. An attendant called a Tellak doused the bathers with water and applied the traditional black soap to the skin to soften before exfoliating with a kessa glove. Sometimes cleansing rituals are done in a community hammam by friends who cleanse each other.
Recent day hammams sometimes allow mixed genders and visitors wear bathing apparel. The conversation consists mostly of light chit chat more than deep conversation. Hammam rituals at famous hotels and spas closely follow the cleansing principles of the ancient tradition. The black soap, La Sultane de Saba, is the same traditional black cleansing soap made in those days from olive oil and crushed olives and infused with eucalyptus for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties and a deep cleanse. The main difference is that the experience is more private, or sometimes shared with a friend. After the ritual, a glass of Moroccan tea is served to restore the fluid balance of the body.
A traditional Moroccan hammam always has the following basic layout:
– A dry hot room to prepare for the cleansing journey of body and soul and get the body accustomed to the heat.
– A steam room to encourage perspiration and sweat out the impurities in the body.
– A bathing room where the traditional hammam ritual treatment will be performed.
– A massage room for a relaxing oil massage.
– A restroom to relax and enjoy a cup of mint tea and allow the body to cool down.
The Hammam Ritual
When visiting a hammam, expect to spend at least two to three hours indulging your senses and your body in the experience of the ultimate cleansing of body and mind by trained staff.
After being doused with warm water, the ritual starts with an attendant applying a layer of black soap to your entire body to soften the skin and prepare it for exfoliation. You are left in a steam room for about five to ten minutes before being scrubbed all over with a special kessa glove, literally scraping off the top layer of the skin. You will be amazed at the amount of dead skin that comes off during the treatment.
The exfoliation is followed by lots of water, either poured over with a bucket by the attendant or with a shower to rinse off all the soap and dead skin.
A purifying rhassoul mask is applied to absorb impurities from the skin and at the same time feed the epidermis with essential minerals. A period of time is spent in the steam room to facilitate the purging of toxins from the skin and the absorption of the minerals.
In luxurious hammams, the session will end with an invigorating massage with Argan oil to relax the body and remove stress from the mind. The Argan oil will rehydrate the skin, leaving it as soft as a baby’s and glowing all over.
After the ritual, you will be wrapped in a warm blanket and taken to the rest room where you will be given a cup of traditional Moroccan mint tea and left to rest in peace. Many visitors drop off to sleep afterward and the staff will gently wake you after an appropriate time.
In western cultures, some people wear bathing suits, sandals, and a bathrobe to make them feel more comfortable. Most modern facilities will provide the necessary apparel as well as special hammam sandals.
In a traditional hammam women were naked and because wasting water in those days was an offense, they brought their own buckets of water to rinse their bodies. Today rinsing is done under cascades of water in shower rooms. Talking in a traditional hammam was welcomed, but today a low pitched voice is appreciated to keep the atmosphere relatively quiet.
Ending the Ritual in Style
In the most luxurious hammams, they offer sandalwood aromatherapy while relaxing in the restroom. A royal massage with Argan oil will end the ritual in style and relax you completely.
A hammam ritual is suitable for everyone but, like all heat treatments, it is not recommended for pregnant women or people suffering from high blood pressure.
Achieving the goal of glowing skin for women is not achievable without changing your lifestyle. Glowing skin is not an overnight phenomenon that you are going to apply a cream or solution to your skin and you are going to have a smooth and healthy skin in the morning. With so many products available in the market which claim to create a glow on your skin it becomes quite tough for women to choose the best one for them. Before actually going in for a product one needs to have a look at the reviews of organic products in Australia to make sure they are using the right products.
Glowing skin is not only a result of the various creams, lotions and beauty products that are applied from the outside. One needs to get ample of sleep, have a good diet and protect the skin from the environment especially the sun which sucks out the suppleness and starts the onset of wrinkles and aging symptoms in human beings.
Cleaning the skin via natural organic methods
Keeping the skin clean from the outside is an important task to help keep the pores open in order to help the skin breathe. Inorganic products available across the shelf will clean the skin beyond doubt but they are going to take away the moisture and suppleness of the skin exposing the underlying cells and tissues to deteriorate in the long run. Using natural cleansing agents like yoghurt which can be applied at the end of the day in a small quantity (2 teaspoons) and washed away is surely going to help. Tomatoes, papaya, strawberries, gram flour (used in ancient times according to Ayurveda) are natural, organic and easily available cleansing agents that do not compromise on the suppleness of the skin.
Face packs that you need to apply to get a beautiful glowing skin
Face packs are available in abundance in the market. Unless a face pack has been labelled as organic with a certification from a certification agency you are surely applying a few harmful chemicals to your face. There are a few readymade face packs, available across the counter which have undergone stringent testing and certified as organic face packs that should be used to keep up with your organic skin care regimen. However if you are one of those who will go in for an extra effort to get the best results then you need to prepare the face packs at home. A papaya face pack with a bit of rose water is going to give your skin that extra glow you have been yearning for. Banana with yoghurt and honey is going to provide that extra shine and suppleness just in time for that social do you have been planning to go. A tomato face pack with a tinge of sugar is surely going to add to the glow you have been looking forward.
Food you need to ingest for Glowing Skin
Having fast food will surely create havoc to your skin’s underlying structure. If you are a fast food lover and cannot resist the temptation make sure to add a bit of discipline to your life and balance it with fresh fruits and vegetables that will add to the glow of your skin. Avocados are considered as the best fruits for skin care since they are laden with antioxidants like lutein and beta carotene. Having avocados regularly in sufficient quantities is surely going to add to the glow and keep the skin hydrated. Vitamin C can be a big reason for glow on people’s face. Oranges not only add glow to the skin but also help keep a myriad of skin problems at bay. Pumpkin, carrots, potatoes, kale, papaya and spinach are few of the eatables that you need to include in your diet so as to help the skin to grow from inside.
Natural and organic skin care regimen has picked momentum
Organic methods to enrich the texture of human skin has picked up pace during the past few years. The ingredients were always present in skin care products that were used before the advent of synthetic skin care products. Due to aggressive advertising and fast results inorganic and synthetic skin care products gained momentum which pushed the organic and natural products into the backseat. However Organic products have stood the test of time and undergo stringent checks before actually hitting the shelf. This is one big reason why people have started going back to organic skin care products and methods.
Skincare has always been a priority for image conscious people. This desire to look appealing has been engrained into the human psyche ever since we developed methods of increasing our aesthetic appeal. Then, with the progression of cosmetic science, skincare has advanced by leaps and bounds, to the point where age-defying products are now available, and more effective versions of those are currently under development.
Ancient Skincare Tips That Are Still Viable Today
Skincare: Then VS Now
One aspect of skincare then versus now, is the increase in synthetic compounds in beauty treatments. Natural ingredients, which were all that the ancient humans had, were being neglected in favor of synthetic chemicals and products which, although effective, were not viable in the long term. Many people often ask does proactiv really work?
Ancient Skincare Practices
Following were some of the most common skincare practices for people of ancient civilizations.
Usage of oils and cream-based emulsions for moisturizing and skin-softening.
Clay and earthy materials for cleansing as well as exfoliating skin. The abrasive grains in these materials would eat away at the top layer of skin, revealing the healthy skin underneath.
Usage of organic pigments to add color to cheeks and other areas of the face.
Using animal dung as an all-round beauty treatment. Admittedly, this does not sound too appetizing, and we’re all lucky that this practice is not en vogue still!
Modern Skincare Practices
Now, following are some modern skincare practices which are prevalent, and being advanced, today.
Usage of synthetic peptides and brightening compounds to lighten the skin and prevent blemishes.
Naturally derived chemical compounds, used in conjunction with synthetic solutions, to aid with preventing and removing wrinkles from face.
Usage of relaxants to prevent facial muscle activation, to further prevent wrinkles and fine lines.
Usage of toxic compounds to get fuller and tighter skin.
Right off the bat, it is easier to see how and why the older skincare practices had, and still have, more viability, as compared to modern methods. The use of organic compounds and natural ingredients yields much better long term results and is generally safer.
To that end, following are some tried and tested skincare methods of old, that you can still use today, to brilliant effect. These methods will not only have your skin looking better, for longer, they will not cost you an arm and a leg either!
Sea Salt and Cream Mixture for Skin Cleansing and Softening
This beauty treatment comes all the way from Japan, where the Geisha (courtesans) would use it as a massaging scrub. This particular treatment is only applicable if you can source pure sea salt, with no additives, and pure whipped cream. Rest assured that your skin will thank you for it by being softer and more vibrant than ever before.
Green tea is among the very finest antioxidant and cleansing agents, having roots in the Far East, where people defied age like nobody’s business, and still continue to do so. Green tea has several extremely beneficial properties, among which are the internal cleansing and detoxifying of the body, as well as elimination of free radicals, which are the root cause of inflammation.
In addition to that, green tea is known as the premier acne relieving solution, due to its antioxidant content, which is higher than black tea and among the highest in the nutrient world. There are several ways to consume green tea, and the best way is up to your taste. If you are looking for drastic skin cleansing and toning, try drinking Matcha, which is a concentrated form of green tea.
A single egg (organic) has all the proteins, minerals and vitamins that your skin needs to stay healthy and vibrant. While it may be less than appetizing, applying a whole egg to your face will nourish it deeply, providing all the vital nutrients, as well as some extra Vitamin D, further protecting the skin.
Collagen replenishment is a specialty of egg, and if you want to maintain the elasticity and tightness of your skin, apply a whole egg daily to a cleansed face. You will not be disappointed!
Are you tired of using the chemical cleansers on your skin and want to switch over to the more real and natural cleansers that people since the ancient times have been using. It is really important to keep your skin clean and free from all the dirt and pollution that your skin goes through every day. The cleansers which we will suggest here today have a mention in the Ayurveda and have been in practice since ancient times. These not only cures the skin problems but also fights skin infections and some diseases. The most important and good parts of milk is that it the most easily available, suits most skin type and is a great natural cleanser. You just have to mix i.e. add a pinch of salt to say about 5-6 table spoons of milk. Then take a cotton ball, dip it in the solution, soak it and start putting it on your skin. Put it on your face and neck, keep it like that for about 2 minutes and then rinse it of in circular motion. Milk has properties which will clear your skin, remove dead cells and you will be able to instantly notice a glow on your face, which by the way would be really pleasing.
It is a really effective face cleanser. It has anti-bacterial, probiotic, and anti-infective properties which guarantees a healthier skin for your face. It is very gentle on your face and cleans all the dirt easily and is not like the hard chemical cleansers. Further due to its properties it does not drain your face of oil which is healthy for your skin. You can apply it directly on your face or you can mix it with milk in the ration of 4:1 and then put it on your face. What more is that it even leaves your skin soft. Keep it for half a minute and then wash your face like you just put some soap on your face in.
Cucumber has skin tightening and cleansing properties. You can cut cucumber into slices and help it cleanse your skin. But I would suggest take some peeled cucumber make its juice, pour in some curd into that juice that you made of cucumber. Mix them and apply them to your face and neck only to wash it after sometime. Mix the two in the right quantity, say for example: one peeled cucumber juice should be mixed with 2-3 table spoons of curd. This is another great face cleansing pack which has the potential of freeing you from all the chemical and foam based cleansing products that not only cost your pocket but are also harsh on your skin.
GRAM FLOUR AND TURMERIC:
Gram flour has natural skin lightening properties i.e. it helps lighten tan and dark patches. As for it being a cleanser, it has been used like that for centuries now as it removes excess oil from the skin and leaves the skin softer and fairer. Not just that it also fights pimples.
For putting it on you need to first mix 2 tablespoons of gram flour, with 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and milk. Make the solution that thick that it doesn’t run off your skin. Then when it’s done, put it on your face and neck. Keep it like that for about 20 seconds and then rinse off and wash it like your clean your face with a soap. This remedy is particularly suitable and beneficial for oily skin types.
Eating healthy is not just subjected to your body but also your nails. One of the most common reason for breakage of nails is lack of vitamin B and biotin. In order to keep your nails healthy, eat biotin and vit B rich food items such as tomatoes, whole grains, nuts etc.
Keep them clean:
The first and foremost thing to do is to keep your nails clean. Our hands go on to various places and often while washing our hands, we tend to miss on cleaning the nails. So, every time you wash your hand remind yourself of cleaning your nails as well.
Let your nails rest from time to time:
Just like how you play with online bingo bonus no deposit to relax yourself, your nails need that break too. Your nails need to breathe, so its best if you let them rest from time to time. You can also use nourishing oils such as olive oil or almond oil to make them stronger and softer at the same time.
With these tips, you can take care of your nails with the most minimal effort.
Acne can be a distressing skin condition, that occurs when dead skin cells and oil clog the skin’s pores, causing the growth of bacteria. Symptoms include the formation of pustules, pimples, as well as blackheads and whiteheads. These can cause significant discomfort, redness, and inflammation on the skin’s surface. Fortunately, there is a range of simple treatments that may prove effective for acne treatment and symptom relief.
Oxytetracycline is one of the most popular treatments for acne, belonging to a class of antibiotics known as the tetracyclines. It works by targeting and killing the bacteria that infect the skin, as well as reducing the area infected. Unrelated to penicillin, it is prescribed by doctors and may take up to 6 weeks for oxytetracycline to be effective.
Benzoyl peroxide is the active agent in gels, lotions, and creams that are applied to the skin. It works by reducing bacteria on the infected skin surface and also can relieve inflammation. For acne treatment, it is applied once or twice a day, ideally 20 minutes after washing affected areas, and is often recommended in combination with oral antibiotics such as oxytetracycline.
Derived from vitamin A, retinoids work by gently exfoliating dead skin cells from the skin’s surface and unplugging blocked hair follicles. A 6-week course is usually recommended for effective results, especially when combined with topical antibiotics.
This can be used as an alternative to retinoids or benzoyl peroxide if they cause skin irritation, and it is available in gels and creams. It works by killing bacteria and reducing the dead skin cells that cause blockage of the pores.
Nutrition may have an important role in acne treatment, particularly by avoiding foods that cause spikes in insulin production. Excess insulin in the blood can trigger overproduction of oil by the oil glands, causing blockages in the skin’s pores. Avoiding foods such as white bread and white rice, and eating foods rich in zinc, antioxidants, and vitamins A and E, can promote healthier skin. The types of foods recommended include complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, legumes, and fresh fruit. Unprocessed vegetables like sweet potatoes, spinach and carrots are rich in zinc, while blueberries, turkey, and whole wheat bread contain skin-friendly vitamins A and E with antioxidant properties.
A range of essential oils has antibacterial and disinfectant properties, the most popular of which include Tea Tree, Lavender, and Basil. Both Tea Tree and Lavender can be applied directly to the affected areas by dabbing the skin using cotton pads. Lavender also has analgesic properties and may be helpful for relieving soreness and inflammation. Although Basil should not be applied directly to the skin, facial steaming may be a soothing treatment. Simply add 2-3 drops of Basil essential oil to a bowl or pot of boiled water, putting the face to the rising steam at an appropriate distance. The steaming process fights the bacteria by opening the pores so the skin can absorb the essential oil’s antibacterial properties.
