May 4th ~ 11th

…and when the tension receded there was calm, the calm that is called before the storm, but is in reality the foundation of a human life, waiting for us between the steps of our march to our mortality, when we are compelled to pause and not act but be. ~ Mohsin Hamid

On May 15th, Uranus will return to the sign of Taurus for the first time in 84 years. For the 7 years that it is in the sign of Taurus it shakes up society on some of its most fundamental levels: its politics, its economy, and those things that sustain our lives. When Uranus first enters Taurus in May, it will do so with a bang: with an exact square to Mars just entering the Uranian sign of Aquarius. Mars/Uranus weather is unpredictable, explosive and combustible. And this will only be the 1st of 3 Mars/Uranus squares before the Summer ends. Uranus is pretty much in your face any way, and really doesn’t need any explosive entrances. Yet, astrologers sit here with bated breath waiting to see what will unfold: a sudden crisis in the economy? a long overdue shift in the tectonic plates? a radical and revolutionary insurrection? something blows up?

The thing is, with Uranus, things tend to be pretty unpredictable. And although we may not have all the answers yet, one thing we do know about the transits of Uranus in Taurus, and that is that the changes that do occur during these years, are not only radical (and at times revolutionary), but tend to have longevity, with ramifications that last for decades.

Usually as we approach the dark of the Moon, we are given space to tie things up, and wind things down. And that is pretty much the way this week begins as we settle into Taurus, seeking peace, calm and serenity. Letting go. Deep inspiration and meaningful experiences can be had if we are willing to turn down the noise and allow ourselves to connect with something more meaningful. Make the most of this time to do so. We will need that space to assimilate, heal and prepare ourselves for the activity that is about to unleash itself by the end of next week, when Mercury also joins the Mars/Uranus picture in anticipation of all of the excitement to come.

Mars/Uranus has something of a bad rap. It’s that whole explosive thing. Not only with actual explosions, but also with explosive tempers, crazy weather patterns, impulsive actions. These two can get into a lot of trouble when they hang out together. However, there are some really good things that Mars/Uranus can be good for, such as:

  • New challenges that require new solutions: leading to inventive and ingenious ways of approaching old problems.
  • Mars in Aquarius combined with Uranus is a call for freedom and can lead to revolutionary changes. Things that we previously may have tolerated, will be less tolerable when these two meet, leading us to take the initiative to make radical changes in our lives.
  • The courage to go in a new direction. Mars is pioneering and courageous, and Uranus inspires us to try new things, and discover new and better ways of doing things. If you have been in a rut, Uranus in Taurus is here to help get you out of that rut.
  • Authenticity. If you’ve been a stickler for following the rules, and going along with what is expected of you, especially at the expense of your own true nature, Mars/Uranus is daring us to have the courage to be our own authentic selves, following our own unique path, even if it means bucking convention.

For the week of May 4th thru the 11th, be sure to read your Rising Sign as well:

Aries

Just when you think you are out of the danger field, all sorts of other annoyances seem to crop up this week. It could even feel like someone is trying to manipulate you, or force you into submission. Realize that there is no use in trying to convince people to see things your way. You may be compelled to face a painful truth or situation that simply cannot be avoided one way or another. If you focus too much on what is not working out, you will only find yourself flustered, resentful and angry when all is said and done. Instead take that same energy and use it in a positive way: tackle a problem that requires your full attention: focus, concentrate, and analyze. It will soon become evident where adjustments and changes need to be made later on. In the mean time, throw yourself into a project with abandon, and focus your energy there.

Taurus

What this week is good for: imagination, dreams, deep spiritual reveries. It is also good for immersing yourself in beautiful and bucolic surroundings. What it is not so good for are practical considerations, particularly around finances. There may even be some confusion afoot. Sometimes it can’t be helped, but try not to take on too many obligations this week, as you might find yourself overwhelmed. There is a lot to take into consideration, and as Uranus is poised to enter your sign later this month, there will be many a Taurus considering making some radical changes in their lives. One way to start, is to think about what it would mean for you to live a more authentic life and lifestyle. You may raise a few eyebrows for starters.

Gemini

With Mercury square Pluto this week you could find yourself drawn into un-winnable arguments or situations that are probably not even worth the time or effort they take. The only good that may come out of this is that it gives you the opportunity to reexamine your ideas. In fact, one way to positively use this transit is through the honest analysis of a problem or situation. It is also good for tackling any project that requires a great deal of focus and concentration. You may also find that this is probably a better week to work on your own, depending on your own cognizance, rather than collaborating with others, who apparently are too bossy for their own good, any way.

Cancer

Usually the days after the Full Moon allow us to retreat and go within. And that may be true for at least the earlier part of the week. But as we reach the waning quarter Moon (late Monday, early Tuesday) although you will be aiming to wind things up, there may be a bit to more going on than anticipated. Not necessarily in a bad way. Perhaps some sort of celebration? A party? Some sort of resolution that opens up all sorts of new doors? Look for opportunities to settle any disagreements with others. Not doing so now, will only lead to resentment later on. Sometimes it’s better to just let some things go (no matter how difficult that may be), rather than saying something you might later regret.

Leo

Meaningful experiences can be had this weekend, if you are able to shut out the usual noise, and turn your attention towards something that feeds both your heart and soul. Perhaps a little bit of an escape from your everyday life is being called for. This can bring you the energy you need to reinvigorate your soul and your outlook on life. This will be true even if you are inclined to over do things, or take on more than you bargain for. A little diversion now and then is not only harmless, but can also give you the courage and hope to reinvest in yourself. A sense of empowerment arises when you find your place in the scheme of things, and feel like you have some sort of control over the destiny of your life.

Virgo

With Mercury square Pluto this week you could find yourself drawn into un-winnable arguments or situations that are probably not even worth the time or effort they take. The only good that may come out of this is that it gives you the opportunity to reexamine your ideas. In fact, one way to positively use this transit is through the honest analysis of a problem or situation. It is also good for tackling any project that requires a great deal of focus and concentration. However, one thing to learn is how important it is for everyone to be more conscious about what they say, and how they say it, in order not to get wrangled into any potentially negative exchanges. Place the focus on compassionate understanding, and opportunities to heal over any rifts, and mend broken bridges if at all possible. It will also bring a deeper sense of control over the destiny of your life.

Libra

It will be hard to stay focused for a good part of the week, mostly due to distractions that make it more difficult to keep up with your usual routine. Sometimes, rather than fighting it, it’s easier to just give in. That may be easier said than done, if you have a job to do. But it might be useful to take time out for reverie, for dreaming, or more creative pastimes. If nothing else, allow yourself to be fascinated. And if you have a way to channel some of that dreaming reverie, all the better. There could be a little edginess with partners. This can be avoided by not allowing yourself to be drawn into any negative comments or manipulative behaviors that lead nowhere. One thing you could focus on, is some project in or around the house that you’ve been meaning or needing to tackle. Just realize you’re probably going to have to take care of it yourself.

Scorpio

You may be wondering when things will finally begin to settle down. After a few intense weeks, you now could have the opportunity to let loose and enjoy yourself for a few days. At times it could feel like you are over-doing it, but a little festivity is being called for. For now this is a blessing. If you are feeling over-committed, temper it with a bit of self-restraint and all should bode well. In some way your vision for the future is being tapped into. Allow that Big Vision to grow for now. There’s no telling where it will take you from here. Something interesting this way comes. It could be quite sudden and unexpected, but it could also open up your life and your perspective in unusual ways.

Sagittarius

If you are feeling a little over-extended by mid-week, realize that it is probably for a good cause. Nonetheless it could feel like there is not enough hours in the day to get to everything that needs doing. Not to mention all the distractions that keep cropping up. And you can only be in so many places at once. Temper any over-enthusiasm with a grain of sobriety and you’ll not only make it through the week unscathed, but will probably reap a few benefits as well. Could be that a new vision for the future is trying to emerge. It may feel daunting at first, and there may be a few things that still need to be worked out, but it is worth taking an objective look at, nonetheless.

Capricorn

Your competitive streak has been strong lately, so it will be difficult to avoid being drawn into situations where you feel like you are needing to defend yourself. Realize that people may be pushing your buttons unconsciously, and not necessarily doing it on purpose. These are most likely people who know you so well, that they are more than familiar with just how to push those sensitive buttons. Especially the ones that really hurt. Rather than wasting energy defending yourself, channel some of it into something more creative, or where you can see some positive results for all of your efforts. A sense of empowerment arises when we find our own place in the scheme of things, and are allowed to take control over the destiny of our own lives, in our own way.

Aquarius

The 3rd quarter Moon of the month is usually a time to dial down and conserve energy. However this waning quarter Moon on Monday (or Tuesday) has your number, and there probably won’t be the usual opportunities to unwind. You might want to try and do all that unwinding earlier in the week. However, what the dark of the Moon does bring this month, are opportunities to unwind in other ways: perhaps in a more convivial manner. A Sun/Jupiter opposition this week is great for parties and a bit of carrying on. It gives you the courage to push yourself a little more than you normally would. However it can also inflate egos and expectations, opening the door to the possibility of taking on way more than you had anticipated. Therefore temper any grand plans with some reasonable sobriety, and all should go well.

Pisces

Use the early part of the week to rest up and recharge your batteries. You will need the extra fuel for later on in the week, when you will be feeling a bit more stretched beyond your capacity. Deep inspiration and meaningful experiences can be had if you are willing to turn down the noise and allow yourself to connect with your inner muse. This can be something creative, spiritual or merely sublime. The key is to wind down in a purposeful way, as much as is possible, for later in the week, you are going to find your dance card a little full. This may find you traveling, or commuting, or running about a bit. The end result is positive, and perhaps even celebratory, however plans should probably be tempered with a reasonable amount of sobriety.

April 27th ~ May 4th

This is its work upon the things ye see,

The unseen things are more; men’s hearts and minds,

The thoughts of peoples and their ways and wills,

Those, too, the great Law binds.

Such is the Law which moves to righteousness,

Which none at last can turn aside or stay;

The heart of it is Love, the end of it Is Peace and Consummation sweet. Obey!

~ Edwin Arnold (The Light of Asia)

When we think of the Law of Karma, we often think in terms of retribution: “this is our punishment for the wrongs we’ve done, or that is what we deserve.” But it is much more complex than some sort of universal lord of judgment and revenge, weighing out our just desserts. This idea of retribution perhaps arose out of the concept that we attract what we sow: “See yonder fields! The sesamum was sesamum, the corn was corn. The Silence and the Darkness knew! So is a man’s fate born.” But it is neither Good, nor is it Bad. It merely is. Jung is quoted as saying: Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it fate. So it is that the majority of our actions are done unconsciously based on certain ideas and habits that we have cultivated. Therefore, why not cultivate better, kinder, more altruistic habits?

With the recent retrograde station of Pluto, and coming off the end of the Mars/Pluto conjunction, we may be all pondering the meaning of life, and all of its seemingly unfathomable mysteries. Mars and Pluto are the co-rulers of the sign of Scorpio, the sign of the Full Moon on Sunday (or Monday, depending on where you live). Mars/Pluto conjunctions are often treacherous, difficult and un-nerving. We may ask, Why does it seem that the innocent too often suffer without cause? And Why is there so much suffering at all? Where is the justice in all that? In Scorpio we are reminded that there are layers upon layers, lives upon lives, depths that are unseen. In lifetime upon lifetime added all together, there is nothing that we have not done, seen, experienced. We all have the capacity for any and all types of karma to ripen given the right conditions, so long as we traverse this Samsaric world. All the more reason to have compassion and understanding for one another as we navigate our lives.

Therefore, instead of planting seeds of anger, revenge or greed; why not plant seeds of kindness, charity, peace, patience and empathy. Those are the sorts of seeds that need cultivating. The more seeds of righteousness we sow, the happier and healthier the planet, and all the beings on it, will be. The Full Moon is exactly sextile Saturn, letting us know that there is an underlying order and plan: that things are as they should be. And it is also reminding us that we can also make it better. Scorpio is a sign of purification, of transformation and growth. Where we are is the result of certain causes and conditions previously set in motion. Where we will be is according to causes and conditions being created now. And so we as individuals, and as a collective consciousness, have the capacity to ever evolve and grow. And that too is part of the plan.

May 1st marks the Solar annual festival of Beltane. It is one of the cross quarter Solar festivals half way between the Aries Equinox, and the Cancer Solstice. (Although it is celebrated on May 1st, the actual astrological date is closer to May 4th.) This day is a celebration of new life emerging: young people dancing around a maypole, of flowers blooming, and birds hatching out of their eggs, and life just bursting from out of the womb. Spring fever, fecundity, reproduction, the meeting of the Green Man and the Maiden, are all celebrated on this day. It was considered a time of purification and transition.

The Queen of the May is the Goddess of the Flowers, Flora, the fertile young Maiden of the Earth. And so we honor the May Queen at this cross quarter of the year, with milk and honey, maypoles and flowers to let us know that Summer is well nigh. Spring has come, the land is fertile, the trees and flowers are blossoming with life. All hail Flora, the Goddess of the Spring.

The above image of “Flora” (as well as last week’s image “Demeter Mourning for Persephone”) is from the original painting of that name, by Evelyn de Morgan.

For the week of April 27th thru May 4th, be sure to read your Rising Sign as well:

Aries

Now that Mars has finally made its way past Pluto, it will soon become evident what needs to be fixed, what needs to further change, and what needs to be adjusted to. And there will be plenty of time for that in the upcoming months. In the mean time, this Full Moon can be quite revelatory. What you realize, or discover, in the light of this Moon will help you to reconfirm what your true priorities are. And once you have these priorities straightened out, it is up to you to figure out how you can reassess your current goals, making sure they are realistically achievable, and whether or not they are in alignment with your primary concerns.

Taurus

Full Moons can be times of realization, discovery, or disclosure, but they can also be times for culmination and closure. The Full Moon on Sunday will be especially relevant to those Taureans born between April 26th and May 2nd, or who have 6-13º of Taurus Rising. It brings into relief what is yours, vs. what belongs to others; what are your priorities, vs. the priorities of others; and trying to negotiate some sort of balance and compromise between these. After all the starts and stops of the previous several weeks, this is a good week to either cut back, or establish more practical and achievable goals that you know you can work with going forward.

Gemini

One of the things that this Full Moon can bring is some sort of closure, so that you can finally establish more manageable goals and priorities in your daily life. It will probably be helpful to try to establish some sort of routine in your daily life. This will help you to become more grounded, find your footing and reestablish your priorities. The Scorpio Full Moon brings an opportunity to release any old energy that we’ve been holding on to. It’s about purification and healing and release. It clears the field to allow us to create new plans and goals in our lives. See what long and short term projects or goals you would like to see accomplished over the week ahead.

Cancer

The Full Moon in Scorpio can be deeply emotional, but it can also be very cathartic. This is something of a romantic Moon for Cancer, where feelings are able to rise to the surface. That romantic feeling can also be channeled through some sort of creative project, or through some other heart-felt and expressive activity. This is also a good week to realistically reassess your relationships with others: who you want to be in your life for the long haul; and those that are not so particularly healthy, and might be holding you back. This is a week to take a practical and realistic look around you, in order to decide who or what you would want to commit yourself to in the foreseeable future.

Leo

This is a good week to take a practical and realistic look around yourself. It’s time to ground ourselves. One way to do so, is by creating realistic goals for yourself that you know you can achieve. This could either be a health goal, or goals having to do with work. Many a Leo may be reassessing these areas of their lives. Finding a project that requires a great deal of organization and self-discipline could prove to be rewarding right now. But if it proves to be much more difficult than you previously anticipated, it may need to be reconsidered. This is a period of reassessment. And what comes out in the light of this Full Moon could be difficult, but also enlightening at the same time.

Virgo

We are all being asked to regroup this week and regain our footing. It could feel a little emotional or even hectic around the Full Moon itself. But it could also prove to be tremendously revealing and insightful. Most importantly this Full Moon allows us to get our priorities straightened out, and streamline our lives in order to make room for those things that matter the most. What feels most reassuring about this period of time is the feeling that things are finally looking like they are all coming together, allowing you to organize your life and be able to create a plan for the foreseeable future.

Libra

Pain and loss seem to have entered into the most intimate areas of our lives of so many people these days. It is hard to avoid. Or at least it feels like that. One of the things that can happen at these times, especially in light of the upcoming Full Moon, are truly what the most important priorities in your life are. What, or who, really matters when all is said and done. As a consequence it would not be surprising to reassess what you spend your valuable time and resources on. All those little petty things that we worry about in our lives, are really not of very much consequence in the long term. It’s the people and things that make your life meaningful that truly count.

Scorpio

There is a Full Moon in Scorpio this Sunday, that will resonate most strongly with those Scorpios who are born between October 30th and November 5th, or have 6-13º of Scorpio rising. On the surface what this Full Moon is about is navigating between those things over which you do have control, and those you don’t; finding some sort of compromise between your needs and the needs of others. But beneath the surface there are deep emotions coming to the surface that need to be acknowledged, released and purified in order to regain your footing. There has been an incredible amount of intensity these days, and it would be really helpful for everyone to establish some stability in their lives before moving forward again.

Sagittarius

Full Moons can be times of culmination, disclosure and release. If you are needing some closure in some area of your life, this could bring you the opportunity to do so. Scorpio Moons are also deeply emotional Moons, filled with a sense of nostalgia for what once was. Full Moons can also be quite revealing. And it is not unusual for things that were previously hidden to come out into the light. The other things that can come out of this Full Moon are what your true priorities are, or at the very least, should be. You might want to ask yourself how you want to spend your valuable resources and time, and what you want to spend them on.

Capricorn

In Taurus season we are all given something of a reality check, as we get back to prioritizing those things that are most important to us. Through the light of the Full Moon in Scorpio, we are being shown what needs to be eliminated, purified or healed in order for us to move forward. Use the Full Moon energy to ground you physically, and energetically. Be honest with yourself about those things that bring you strength and encourage you to grow, and those things that are holding you back. If you need to set appropriate boundaries and limits. So be it. Things are going to be on your terms for now. You are discovering strengths you never knew you had.

Aquarius

The Full Moon in Scorpio is about releasing, discovering and uncovering things that you’ve been trying to hold on to, protect or shield for some time. This could be something from the past, something related to your home, and where you live, or whom you live with, or family. There is a rightness about this. And an understanding that in order to grow, and move on, the world needs to continually evolve and change. That sometimes you need to let go. And as one door is closing, another will open. Knowing this can bring a surge of renewal, as well as a stronger sense of purpose and direction. Seek stability, and surround yourself with those who emotionally get you, and whom you know you can rely on. The rest will fall into place.

Pisces

After many weeks of incongruity, it could begin to feel like everything is finally beginning to fall into place and make sense. There is a rhyme and reason for it all. And that ability to release and have closure allows you to not only put some things to rest, but to also think in terms of what you need to plan from here on going forward. Full Moons can bring a crisis in consciousness, as your beliefs and understanding of the world is being put to the test. And as your heart and your instincts wage battle with what you rationally know to be true. Once stability is finally achieved, then you can relax into the understanding that everything is all right with the world.

April 20th ~ 27th

We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned… so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come. ~ Joseph Campbell

This past week we saw a lot of astrological activity: Mercury’s station Direct, Saturn’s station Retrograde, and Chiron’s ingress into Aries. This week we have Pluto’s annual station Retrograde on April 22nd. Both Saturn and Pluto are stationing retrograde in the same sign of Capricorn, putting a tremendous amount of emphasis in this area of our lives. Capricorn rules the structures that sustain us, including the brick and mortar structures such as roads, and bridges and buildings; but also those things that make sure our lives are running well: which includes government, leadership, and the rule of Law. Mountains are also ruled by Capricorn: firm structures that are long-lasting and grounding, the bones in our body, our knees, that which survives, things that are old, weathered, traditional, either worn down or honed and polished by the winds of time.

Planets are even stronger when they station. And Pluto is even more so this year with Mars conjunct Pluto (exact 4/26) for the rest of the month of April. There is something deeply symbolic here, especially with the ingress of Chiron, that feels like a shedding, an ending, perhaps even a feeling that something must be destroyed, in order for a new order to be able to unfold. And as Pluto stations retrograde he is going to reveal those things that are undermining those critical structures in our lives, and thereby also undermining our strength, stability and sustainability. The power of Pluto is internalized when it is retrograde, asking us to purge, purify and eliminate that which is old, decayed, no longer supporting us, and may in fact be preventing us from growing, evolving and taking full control over the destiny of our lives.

When Pluto stations, he digs down deep, unearthing that which has been hidden below the surface. What he discloses are things that we had buried away in some dark hole somewhere, hoping that they would not resurface again. These may involve feelings of dread, the fear of disclosure, shame or self-doubt and blame. These are also the very things that need digging up, because if they are allowed to continue to fester below the surface, they will only continue to erode and weaken our well-being, creating sinkholes of despair when they finally collapse. So no matter how dark and unappealing these putrid pockets are, as they are disclosed, they can no longer be ignored or avoided. It is time to mend, rebuild, and shore up what can be saved; and allow what needs to depart to do so. This then opens the way for a new life to unfold.

Mars/Pluto energy is a force to be reckoned with. It can even feel destructive, oppressive, or like we are being forced, controlled or manipulated to do things against our will. Or that we are having to contend with powerful forces beyond our control. It can feel ruthless or even cruel. However, this same energy can be channeled constructively, even in the face of these powerful and overwhelming odds, for rebirthing, rebuilding, rehabilitating; and purifying. Mars/Pluto also brings us the strength, determination and courage to do this intensely hard work. And as both Mars and Pluto are also in a positive and creative sextile to Jupiter, there are huge benefits and rewards to be gained from moving through whatever pain or challenges we are confronted with; facing our fears; and doing the hard work.

Pluto has to do with our relationship to power: who has the power; how that power is obtained and held; how we feel about those in power; how we feel about having power ourselves; and also about being able to discriminate between those things over which we do have control and power over, and those things which we simply do not. Pluto has domain over things that appear to consume us, such as sexuality, compulsion, obsession, addiction, and the cycles of birth, death and rebirth. Often what prevents us from feeling our own power are deeply ingrained wounds and fears that are the results of trauma or experiences from ages past. Pluto also brings us the opportunity to get at the root of these old wounds, to purify, eliminate and heal. And that is our job during the half of the year that Pluto is retrograde.

There are other things hidden deep down in the bowels of the earth and our subconscious that are actually quite valuable. Treasures of unequal beauty and resilience, honed by external pressures and the breadth of time into something inexplicably beautiful and even magical. And those are the rewards that are being promised as we dare to go deep down into Pluto’s lair with the courage of Mars at our side. Pluto is the alchemist, capable of converting lead into gold; carbon into diamonds; experience into revelation. Pluto is also the phoenix, emerging from out of the fire, renewed, reborn and fully transformed. And so we can also meet the alchemist and the phoenix during the retrograde phase of Pluto which lasts until September 30th, but it is up to each of us to embark on this journey through our own power, through our own volition and determination.

For the week of April 20th thru the 27th, be sure to read your Rising Sign as well:

Aries

Now that Chiron is in your sign, you will feel the call to honor your own boundaries. You are being reminded of the importance of self-care, self-protection and self-healing. That, combined with an approaching Mars/Pluto conjunction will keep you on guard, and ready to defend, battle and take on all challenges to do so… even the most formidable ones. Aries will be a force to be reckoned with. And with Mercury now direct in your sign, you are trying to make sense of where you are, and where you want to be going from here. You may feel a bit conflicted this week between short term plans, and long-term obligations. Wait it out before making any major decisions. Chances are you are needing to pay attention to what is right in front of you, and having to put some things on hold in the mean time. With Saturn now retrograde, and Pluto stationing retrograde a lot of emphasis is being placed on future goals, and the direction that your life is taking. These are both reminders that ultimately you are the one writing the story of your life.

Taurus

We are moving into Taurus season this week, as the Sun once again shifts signs. Taurus rules growing things: plants, trees, the children of the Earth. It’s time to ground ourselves and feel gratitude for what we have. By mid-week your ruling planet, Venus, will also be shifting signs, from quiet Taurus into more gregarious Gemini. Gemini draws people together. This week Taurus is being given the opportunity to offer the chalice of peace, as we will be feeling more sensitive to issues of self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. Greater wholeness can be achieved this week by accepting and appreciating the differences in others, and what these differences have to teach us. And as Pluto shifts in his lair this week, you are reminded of how the way you view the world has been gradually shifting as well. And right now, this includes the role that you see yourself playing in the world. Many a Taurus is needing to redefine what that looks like right now.

Gemini

By mid-week, Venus will enter your sign, bringing a sense of peace, comradery, and mutual understanding. This will be most welcome after a week of feeling at odds with others, where communications have been cautious, difficult and scripted. As a result, it could feel like you are still in the throes of the recent Mercury retrograde, as your life is still riddled with delays, and obstacles. It could also feel like there are conflicting obligations, between what you need to be focusing on now, and where you would much rather be. In the mean time, focus on what is directly in front of you. Many of the things that have been on your mind, whatever distractions there are, have been on weighty and profound subjects. The Pluto stationing retrograde will just add an even deeper level, as you strive for understanding. So thank goodness, and welcome to Venus, who helps to change the narrative, and set a kinder and lighter tone moving forward.

Cancer

The recent New Moon might have brought a few twists and turns for Cancer, especially if you are setting your sights on a new direction. And despite some immediate delays and obstacles, you may finally feel like you can start to create some sort of plan with confidence. Getting others to agree or be on the same page, may be the one prevailing obstacle. It could be that you are dealing with some very strong-willed and persuasive individuals. It might be wise to pause and step back, if that is the case. Especially if you feel that you are being forced to do something against your will. Don’t lose sight of your own convictions and beliefs, and allow your own conscience and experience to be your guide. There is much that you can learn through your relationships with others, not the least of which is learning how to trust your own instincts and sense of integrity.

Leo

The New Moon on the 15th, may have brought a few realizations in its wake, along with a few shifts and turns in the direction that you see yourself moving in the foreseeable future. Life is not without its immediate concerns, however. And these may continue to weigh on your throughout the week. But, with the Sun now moving into Taurus, it is time to ground yourself, and feel gratitude for what you have. It is time to wind down the energy and think in terms of what is practically achievable, but also reminding yourself of the importance of needing to stop and smell the roses. Think like a hobbit. In Taurus season we seek peace, contentment, good food and nourishment. There is a profound and therapeutic relationship between the mind and body. All the more so with Pluto stationing retrograde this week. Pay attention to how your state of mind impacts on your health and sense of well-being. It may give you the courage to unearth, and work on, any underlying wounds and clogged channels that need releasing and healing.

Virgo

There is probably much weighing on your mind this week. This may render some uncommunicative and withdrawn for now as you sort things out. That’s okay. There probably is a bit to be sorted out. What this week is good for: concentrating on a project that requires your full focus and attention. It can also help you to reestablish limits and boundaries as needed. And as Pluto stations retrograde this week it is showing us where we need to heal and transform ourselves. Pluto is also showing you how. There is something to be said for finding a medium through which you can transform and heal your psyche and your soul. One way is through some sort of creative process. It doesn’t matter the medium: it can be anything from needlepoint, gardening, cooking, decorating, dancing… in some way you are being asked to touch your heart and soul; and in doing so relieve yourself of the residue of any emotional baggage that you’re still carrying around with you.

Libra

By mid-week it will come as something of a relief when your ruling planet, Venus, enters the sign of Gemini. Much of the load that you’ve been carrying around with you will feel like it is lifting. But until then, and even after, use the intensity of focus, to concentrate on immediate tasks and responsibilities. They may be hard, and communications guarded, but if anyone can navigate through these difficult times with grace and diplomacy, it’s Libra. As Venus enters Gemini, you will find that your diplomatic skills will only be enhanced: understanding that we may not all come from the same perspective or place; but that healing and greater wholeness can be achieved by accepting and appreciating the differences in others, and what these have to teach you. There is so much being brought to the surface as Pluto stations retrograde this week. Look for opportunities to either mend or repair bridges that previously seemed insurmountable, within the home or family, or with those who are closest to you. It will be both challenging, and rewarding, at the same time, as a phase of life is coming to closure, while allowing others to open up.

Scorpio

Communications and conversations are laden with intensity these days. All the more so, now that Pluto is stationing retrograde, along with Saturn. This tends to put the focus within, and bring greater depth to your thought and understanding. This has been intensified by your ruling planet Mars being in the cross hairs of these strong and transformative planets. Conversations may be hard. And it could feel like you are needing to defend yourself. But what you learn can also be tremendously insightful and healing as well. It takes great courage to defend and honor truth. Superficial platitudes will not suffice right now. And you will find, that now that Pluto is retrograde, that you will not cease in your efforts, until you have learned everything that you need to know.

Sagittarius

The Pluto station is digging in deep this week. For Sagittarius this has a lot to do with money and property and wealth, and your relationship to these things. Perhaps much of this has already been resolved, but each time Pluto stations, it takes you a little deeper. At the root of ownership, and wealth, and your attitudes towards these are even deeper priorities. In most societies it is the person who has the most stuff who has the power and calls the shots. But ultimately there are deeper truths and priorities that have less to do with material things. This can include things like getting over hangups about ownership, or fears about never having enough. But it is also about fully appreciating yourself, your own self worth, and your ability to compete on your own terms without having to prove yourself to anyone. Money can open up a lot of doors in life, but it is not the end all secret to happiness. As Coco Chanel once said, There are people who have money and people who are rich. And one doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the other.

Capricorn

There is so much to ponder this week, it can leave one absolutely speechless. In many ways it has been feeling like it is time to redefine your life: who you are; what you represent; what goals you wish to set for yourself. If your life has become stagnant in any way, you are going to be getting to the bottom of that, and exploring what it is that is keeping you from growing and evolving, and being the master of your own life and destiny. A lot of personal soul searching can take place over the next week that can be pretty revealing. Especially if you are willing, honest and courageous enough to acknowledge those things in your life that you have outgrown, no longer need, and are just holding you back. Some ruthless personal house cleaning is being called for here. It’s time to take back your life.

Aquarius

After what may feel like a series of twists and turns for this that and the other one, we enter a period that could, on the one hand, feel like a wait and see period. You may find it difficult to get things done, or make necessary connections. Delays and obstacles prevail. Pluto stationing retrograde is drawing you back into the past, not just for the wonderment and revelation of it all, but to help to resolve and release old issues that have never been resolved. They have been lingering like old wraiths with no purpose, or place to go. This is about the end of an era. It makes no sense to cling and hold on to what once was. Those old landmarks will no longer suffice. It is time for you to clear the field, so that newer and better seeds can be planted in the future.

Pisces

The courage of your convictions allows you to take on even the most formidable of obstacles and adversaries this week. As a reminder: with your ruling planet Jupiter also retrograde, as it is for the next several months, we are all made that much more aware of unethical behaviors. This will help you to separate the chaff from the wheat. But it also helps to reconfirm what your own moral and ethical standards are, and how you can best bring yourself and your aspirations more in alignment with these. And it also helps to confirm those things, groups, and movements that you don’t want to align yourself with. Pluto is pointing you in the direction of realizing that you can transform your life and your hopes for the future. What it all gets down to, is constantly orienting yourself towards what is the greatest good and your highest purpose.

April 13th ~ 20th

As you move outside of your comfort zone, what was once the unknown and frightening becomes your new normal. ~ Robin S. Sharma

As we move through this week, there are a few shifts coming up, perhaps a few realizations, perhaps a few surprises. Usually we all give a great sigh of relief when Mercury stations Direct, as it will on the 15th. But there is so much more going on at the same time, we may not even have a moment to breathe before we realize we are moving beyond our comfort zone, and into uncharted territory. The idea of a New Normal, has been bandied about quite a bit over the past year. There may be a few more twists to contend with over the next several weeks. This week may bring us a glimpse of what that new trend may look like.

When Mercury does station and appear to move direct again, this often accompanies another mental shift, helping to reorient our perspective. Those seeds that were being planted during the retrograde phase are now just beginning to germinate and grow. It’s time to put all the pieces together, as more information is coming to light. It will now become more apparent as to what you need to do, and time will begin to even out to allow you to do that.

You may think therefore that you can begin to make long term plans once again. But due to an influx of Uranian energy coming up, there’s no telling where we will all be by the time the Summer is out. But for now, we can begin to at least plan for today. Something that Mercury has been defying us to do during its retrograde phase.

The New Moon on the 15th could bring some surprises, but it should also bring a great deal of clarity and light. Not only is Mercury stationing Direct again, but the New Moon is also applying to a conjunction to illuminating, but unpredictable Uranus. It is also leaving behind a square to Pluto, which can make us feel as if we are being given permission to release oppressive and debilitating circumstances, and move in a new direction. Sometimes this can merely mean the realization that we don’t have to keep doing things, the way we have in the past. That there are other ways of doing things. The New Moon is in the sign of Aries, a sign of New Beginnings in general. And like pioneers embarking on a new journey, we are reorienting ourselves to what appears to be a new normal ahead.

Chiron entering Aries on the 17th brings the courage and initiative and motivation to set appropriate boundaries (with others, with yourself, in your life) which may have become eroded over the past 7 years that Chiron was in Pisces. This is about self-care and self-healing and self-protection. All the more so now that Saturn is stationing Retrograde this week, and heading back to square Chiron later on this year. Saturn will be retrograde from April 17th thru September 6th this year, which also gives us permission to set limitations and boundaries. It’s about cutting back, simplifying and saying No when you need to. It can also feel like you are being denied something when Saturn stations retrograde. Separations and endings are not unheard of at this time.

Saturn retrograde can feel like we are needing to take a few steps back before we can go forward again. As a result goals can be put on hold, or we are having to revisit people, places and situations that we thought we had dealt with a long time ago. This can be because of unfinished business that needs taking care of, but sometimes it’s just about revisiting history, and getting a firmer grasp on where you came from, and who you are. Retrograde periods in general allow us to process, assimilate and review.

The Saturn retrograde period can be good for internalizing some of the more positive traits of Saturn, such as self-discipline, reliability, self-restraint, organization, strategy, attention to detail and self-respect. It is also a good time to cull out the negative traits of Saturn such as fear, guilt, avoidance, the need to always be in control, the need to always be right, and stagnation. In this way, we are developing more skillful means for navigating the world.

For the week of April 13th thru the 20th, be sure to read your Rising Sign as well:

Aries

There is a New Moon in your sign this weekend, highlighting unpredictable but revelatory Uranus, which has been traveling in your sign for the past 7 years. New Moons are times of new beginnings, all the more so in your own sign of Aries. In the light of Uranus, realizations can occur, new directions taken. This should be especially so with Mercury stationing direct as well on Sunday. In some way you are being asked to embrace that which is original, authentic and honest about yourself so that you can grow in some sort of extraordinary way. With Saturn also stationing this week, you will be reevaluating all of your goals and plans for the future. In the mean time, this week you will find yourself motivated by doing what is best for the greater good of all concerned.

Taurus

Your ruling planet stands at the leading edge of a cradle of planets, where comfort, kindness and the motivation to be of service to others takes precedence. You may find it difficult to get things done as Venus approaches its opposition to good-time Jupiter, but the optimism and good cheer that it brings could do much to raise one’s spirits, heal the soul, deepen relationships, and recharge your batteries. Your desire for peace, beauty and affection is stronger than usual these days. Allow yourself to indulge that when and where you can. Your charming and gentle nature, may find you graciously basking as the center of attention this week.

Gemini

For Gemini, the New Moon in Aries is a wishing moon, making it an ideal time to sow positive intentions and affirmations. It is particularly so, as this Moon is conjunct illuminating and alternative Uranus, awakening you to a more ideal way of life and living. Whenever Uranus is involved, we are being asked to be willing to step outside of our comfort zone in some way. By considering new ideas, you open yourself up to possibility. There is a suggestion here of looking for new avenues of inspiration that can bring you more in alignment with your highest ideals and aspirations. On top of this, your ruling planet, Mercury is also stationing Direct the same day as the New Moon, shifting awareness along with your perspective. As Saturn stations retrograde this week, endings can ensue. We are also being given permission to retreat from obligations or agreements that prove to be more costly, too time consuming, or more trouble than they are worth.

Cancer

There is a New Moon this weekend, and new moons are always associated with new beginnings. This may be especially so with this one, as it is conjunct illuminating and alternative Uranus. If you have been considering any sort of creative changes in your work, or your plans for the future, this is a good Moon to work with. It could be that you might even consider questioning the current status quo, recognizing that there are other alternatives and possibilities. This will feel especially so with Mercury also stationing direct on the same day as the New Moon. Uranus is asking all of us in some department of our lives to embrace the changes that have already been made, those that are in the process of occurring, and those that we may want to make in the future. Ultimately, the end result will be a new-found sense of freedom and possibility.

Leo

What may have seemed insurmountable and oppressive last week is being greeted with a new-found sense of freedom and deliverance riding on the New Moon this weekend. There can be an element of the unexpected when the New Moon meets Uranus in this way. Uranus can be good, bad, fun or annoying, but a lot will depend on how flexible you are willing to be. One thing Uranus can bring is an opportunity to view the world in a whole new way. So release the bow lines, and allow yourself to leave the safety of the shore. There’s no telling where this voyage will bring you. As Saturn also stations retrograde this week, you may wish to pull back and reassess a health (or work) situation. This could prove to be an excellent time for any physical rehabilitation, or program to make yourself sounder and stronger. Saturn also gives you permission to back out of obligations or work that proves to be more involved than you had previously thought. But try not to take on any new obligations until after Saturn is direct again in September (if it can be at all helped).

Virgo

The New Moon in Aries can sometimes be shocking in and of itself. This one is more so because of its conjunction to unpredictable but illuminating Uranus. Something may come to a swift conclusion, opening the door to newer and possibly more creative possibilities. If you have been thinking about making any changes, this is a good Moon to work with. Changes initiated at this time will help to free up your life in some way. Uranus can be revealing. All the more so with your ruler, Mercury, also finally stationing Direct the same day as the New Moon. This could feel a bit like a light shining in the darkness. Even in and through the darkest of places one can gain realization and understanding.

Libra

Your ruling planet, Venus, stands at the vanguard of a soulful yet supportive cradle of planets this week. Much of the emphasis will be on: How can I best be a support to others; and What sacrifices am I willing to make, in order to be in service to the highest good, and for the greatest benefit of all concerned? Relationships with family members, although stressed this week, can also be deepened through shared experiences and concerns. With Saturn stationing retrograde this week, there could be someone in your care, who unable to care for themselves, may need more help. Do realize though that taking on the care of others, could prove to be more complicated than had been originally anticipated. However, since the key for Libra is to make your foundation, your home, your tribe, more grounded and stronger than it has been in the past, there may be opportunities to address lingering problems and issues that undermine that strength.

Scorpio

It could feel a little like you are in the eye of the storm this coming week, betwixt and between some hard decisions, and feeling like you are being forced into a corner later on in the month. Make the most of this time to rest up. You may find that other people’s concerns and needs will take priority, as you put aside some of your own needs in the mean time. But after this you are going to have to start thinking about freeing up some of your daily obligations and responsibilities, if only for your own peace of mind and well-being. Saturn retrograde is giving you the opportunity to reassess where you have not set enough boundaries with yourself and others, especially where it concerns time management. There are also some warnings here about an abundance of paperwork or red tape which could feel rather oppressive, and filled with an endless array of details. Take care of each task as it arrives. One task at a time; one day at a time.

Sagittarius

In this space between time, it could feel a bit like we are all being cradled and protected in the eye of the storm. We know what has already happened, and we know that there are things that are impending, but in the mean time we also have this network of support that will carry us over the threshold of change and uncertainty. And you will need all the support you can get with Saturn stationing this week. It could feel like the wolf is howling at the door. A sudden loss of funds could leave you feeling exhausted and bewildered. Try to simplify your financial situation as much as possible. Downsize and create a plan you can live with. This is not a time to take on new financial obligations, or take on more debt, as it would prove to be difficult to pay off later. You will find that you have enough financial obligations on your plate as it is. What this time is good for: saving and building up equity and worth, rather than spending.

Capricorn

Capricorn will be particularly sensitive to the stations of Saturn, as it is your ruling planet. These retrograde phases which last almost 5 months each year are times to redefine and reassess your boundaries and limits. This includes allowing yourself to back out of obligations that prove to be much more than you bargained for, and recommitting to those that you want to see through to completion. What Saturn retro periods are good for, is developing and cultivating the positive attributes of Saturn, such as self-discipline, organization, and self-respect; while working through any self-limiting Saturnian qualities such as fear, avoidance and procrastination. In the mean time, there are some strong and supportive aspects that dare to guide you through these potentially changeable and unpredictable times.

Aquarius

As Saturn stations this week, this initiates a season of endings in which you are releasing many things from the previous cycle of your life, in preparation for a new one that will be emerging a few years down the road. This could feel like you are taking a ride down memory lane, as you will be compelled to address many of those people, issues, or situations that you thought long buried and dealt with in the past. Whatever has not been totally put to rest, will reemerge, compelling you to let go and release those things that are holding you back, and preventing you from growing. Saturn is currently in Capricorn, a sign of retreat and withdrawal for Aquarius, so that it would not be unusual for you to contemplate moving on, retiring, or leaving a current situation. In turn, the New Moon is opening you up to new possibilities, new experiences, that could literally change your whole perspective.

Pisces

If anyone gets the true meaning of compassion, it’s Pisces: the desire to alleviate the suffering in the world. At this point we’re all needing some Pisces in our lives to embrace us in a cradle of understanding and compassion. You will find yourself motivated to serve the greater good, to do what is best, to be of kind service. Don’t forget to bestow some of that compassion on yourself: find moments of silence, retreat, self-care, time in nature. This is the eye in the storm, when we all need a bit of comfort and solace to restore our batteries. With Saturn currently in Capricorn, many a Pisces is wondering: What is my next step? Where am I going to go from here? But when Saturn stations retrograde, as it will this week, it could feel like you are needing to take two steps back before you can take another forward. The next several months are a time to figure out what your true hopes and aspirations are; and what they are not.

April 6th ~ 13th

Well I don’t know what will happen now; we’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life ~ longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And so I’m happy tonight; I’m not worried abut anything; I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. April 3, 1968

These words spoken above by Martin Luther King, Jr. just one day before his assassination, were not only prescient, but majestic and profound. The words of a great man, and a great leader with the conviction of his beliefs. And so we celebrate this week the Jupiter sextile Pluto transit, the transit of greatness, endowed with the power of Truth and Justice.

Some how we’ve managed to make it through the past few weeks relatively unscathed, as Mars made its way past Saturn, and into the abyss between the hard place of Saturn that only just passed, and the tragic darkness of Pluto at the end of the month. We will be reminded that we are not out of the woods yet, as the sun squares Pluto mid-week, highlighted by the 3rd quarter Moon on Sunday. Otherwise, there is smooth sailing aloft the Jupiter/Pluto tides, as we coast in on the last leg of the Mercury Retrograde phase this week. It is a darkening Moon, and we are being asked to process what we have learned. In the last quarter Moon we are also being asked to focus on self-care and to be able to discriminate between those things we can do something about, and those that we simply cannot. In the words of the 8th century Buddhist master, Shantideva: “If something can be done about the situation, what need is there for worry? And if nothing can be done about it, what use is there for being worried?”

The Jupiter/Pluto sextile becomes exact again on April 14th, and with this cycle we are being asked to connect with our own core truths, beliefs and sense of justice. While Jupiter is retrograde, as it is now, we often become aware of the unethical behaviors of others, and the injustices that occur in the world. And this may certainly be true. But at these times, it is not just about holding those in power accountable for their moral and ethical decisions, it’s also about the way we use our own power, and our own resources for the greater good. W may ask ourselves at this time, are we truly living up to our own moral standards?

The sextile this year is advising us to evolve, reevaluate and reexamine many things that we previously took for granted. Jupiter is in the sign of Scorpio, a sign that is co-ruled by Pluto, giving it a double Scorpio significance. The sign Scorpio is about transformation, growth, rehabilitation, rebuilding, and rebirthing. It concerns itself with issues surround birth, death and rebirth, as well as issues surrounding power, and those who hold power. And when Jupiter is in Scorpio it can also be associated with major philosophical, financial or political shifts that can impact society on a large scale.

Jupiter/Pluto can also bring us guidance when we need it. This can be in the form of practical advice, or information. But it can also be about connecting with our own inner guides and conscience. It is at these times that we might ask ourselves, (and fill in whatever great leader or teacher you resonate with): What would Jesus/Buddha/Gandhi do? What does it mean for you to live up to your own highest ethical and moral standards? What does it mean for you to be in service to the great good? What does it mean to do the right thing?

Dr. King once said that the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice. It bends towards justice, but here is the thing: it does not bend on its own. It bends because each of us in our own ways put our hand on that arc and we bend it in the direction of justice.” ~ Barack Obama
