Find out if it’s the right time for your little one to get orthodontic treatment.

You’ve begun to notice that your child’s permanent teeth are starting to grow in a little crooked. Or maybe they are dealing with gaps between teeth or overcrowding. If so, then you may be wondering if it’s time to bring them into our office for an evaluation. Our Ashburn, VA, pediatric dentist Dr. Ajit Patel and our orthodontist Dr. Joseph Errera have teamed up to provide quality pediatric dentistry while also offering the orthodontic treatment your child needs for a healthier smile. So, could your child benefit from braces? Let’s find out.

There are many reasons your kid might need braces, whether they are dealing with gaps in their smile, crowding or a bad bite (often referred to as a malocclusion). Malocclusions occur when the top and bottom jaws do not properly align due to a difference in their sizes. A common malocclusion is an overbite or underbite.

In most cases, our Ashburn, VA, children’s dentist will notice issues early on when they start coming in for routine dental checkups every six months. When this happens we will have our orthodontist examine your child’s smile to determine if braces could help correct certain issues.

Of course, if you are new to our practice then you may be wondering when the best time would be to bring your child in for an orthodontic evaluation.  The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial evaluation at 7 years old since most permanent front teeth are erupting along with the six year molars.

Keep in mind that just because you are bringing your child in for an orthodontic evaluation doesn’t necessarily mean that we will immediately put braces on them. Sometimes we will just monitor your child’s smile to see if the issue is something that corrects itself or will eventually require an orthodontic intervention. However, coming in for an evaluation is truly the best way to know what’s going on for your child’s smile and whether braces could correct these issues early when they are often much easier to treat.

Do you want to schedule a complimentary orthodontic evaluation for your little one? If you are contemplating getting braces for your child in Ashburn, VA, it’s time to find out if this is the right way to improve the look and health of their smile. Call Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center today for a free orthodontic consultation.

Most teens balk at the idea of getting braces to correct bite and tooth alignment issues. At Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center in Ashburn, VA, pediatric dentist Dr. Ajit Patel and our orthodontist Dr. Joseph Errera offer Invisalign clear aligners, a quicker, easier, and discreet way to straighten smiles. Your child may qualify for this innovative orthodontic treatment.

The best age for orthodontics

The American Association of Orthodontists says that a child should receive an evaluation for braces no later than age seven. Done early, orthodontic examinations catch problems as they develop, avoiding issues such as improper jaw growth, oral trauma to protruding teeth, and the poor oral function and appearance problems caused by misaligned teeth. Additionally, young teeth and bone structure are easier to work with and manipulate. That's why dental professionals call orthodontics for children "interceptive care."

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic system which uses custom-made, clear plastic aligners instead of wires and brackets. Thin and practically invisible, the aligners come in pairs numbering 18 to 30 in all, and patients wear them 20 to 22 hours a day. Removable for special occasions, meals and brushing/flossing, the aligners are smooth and comfortable. Over course of nine to 18 months, they realign teeth plagued by a variety of alignment issues such as:

  • Protruding front teeth
  • Crowding
  • Gaps
  • Overbite
  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Tooth rotation and tooth tipping

Only metal braces can correct severe problems. However, Invisalign aligners, prescribed and maintained by the team at Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center, help many mild to moderate issues. Your child's orthodontist will determine if Invisalign is the right choice.

Is Invisalign OK for Kids?

The answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. Dr. Errera is the resident expert in orthodontics at Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center. Through oral exam and X-rays, he can tell if Invisalign could help your child. As a general rule, a youngster's teeth should be decay-free, and all the baby teeth should be gone. First molars and incisors should be in place.

Eruption tabs may be included in your child's aligners. These special tabs keep spaces open for yet to erupt adult teeth. Also, compliance tabs indicate if the patient is wearing the appliances for the prescribed amount of time, keeping treatment on track.
