Art In Wax is the online presence for Artist Hazel Rayfield. She is an Encaustic Hot wax artist based in Southend on the South East Coast of England, with a passion for painting in wax. Follow this blog for all my miniature art collections and dolls houses.
I have been very busy painting and realised that I haven’t blogged in a while so this post is a little catch and viewing of some of my recent pieces of miniature art.
I’ve been having fun experimenting with my Dolls House paintings and Collectible miniature art, my mannequin style pieces, some of which are referred to as my “Dressing Room” Collection have been especially well received and have been very popular in both 1:12th scale and ACEO size, these shown below are the ones currently available in my Etsy store, the pastel dresses in the dressing room, the bridal gown boudoir are toy dolls house size and “Starlet” is 3.5 x 2.5 inches so Art Card .
The most recent of the paintings shown below, finished today are the two Street Scene pictures, the Café scene is in a black frame 3×4 inches, some of my paintings this size appear in dolls houses as a statement piece but equally they are popular as a way to own a piece of miniature art. The other street Scene is a smaller piece just 2 x 1 3/4 inches which has a florist and dress shop in a courtyard.
I hope you like these new pieces and please remember if you would like to see more of my latest miniature paintings why not check out my Facebook page …….
I noticed today my Miniature Art Etsy store display has changed.
Etsy have been rolling out changes over the past few months and this is how my items are looking today.
Descriptions and paintings information is now on the side instead of underneath the photographs and there is now more information available.
I’m in the process of updating my listing so they have the best for keywords etc as Etsy search is very important and I need to fine tune my online presence with the changes, but my store is open as normal.
Shopping for Miniature and Dollhouse Collectible Art
Nothing much has changed for shoppers. All items are available! Just watch out to the side for more information including size and terms etc.
My store accepts both PayPal and Etsy pay payment options. Etsy pay allows payment with not need for a pay pal account as they take most major cards.
Inside The Gallery this morning….
A new art exhibition…… “Mannequin” the video below shows what I’ve been painting recently.
The Gallery is my 1:12th scale Art gallery which today has on display my latest collection of dolls house paintings. These miniature paintings are based on the theme of mannequin dressed with Vintage style lingerie….. there is also a dress painting which ties to the theme as a Dressing Room perhaps a ladies maid getting the dresses ready or it could be a dress shop.

If you have read my blog before you will know I am an Encaustic artist with a passion for painting in hot wax paint….. especially in miniature
I paint using branded wax medium which I melt and paint with using a collection of heat tools. These range from specialist encaustic irons and stylus heat tools, with various nibs and tips some of which my husband has adapted the tips of so I can paint tiny. I also use a hot plate and craft heat gun, all of which go into the creating my paintings in varying ways.

New Miniature Art In Wax Dolls House Paintings – Period Style !
“The Lady In The Sitting Room”
This new piece of my miniature art for a dollhouse has a lady of a period (you decide) with her sewing and her aspidistra planter on the table by the fire place, this is definitely the Lady of the house’s Room with her pink drapes at the window.
I have layered this painting on a rustic painted card for an antique look and it is for sale in a wood frame, the frame is handmade, especially for my art, bespoke in fact by a uk craftsman. Size 2 x 2 1/2 inches overall when framed. The frame is front loading so the painting is stuck in.
A Miniature Challenge
My husband likes to challenge me ….
And after recently seeing my miniature sewing machine painting said “you could do a spinning wheel “ so I thought why not I’ll give it a go !!! This what I’ve come up with…….
“The Cat In The Spinning Room”
A period style scene with a cat in the foreground and a lady using a spinning wheel in the background, this tiny painting has lots of details and is very much a new style for my miniature art. I felt this painting needed a more ornate frame so it is for sale in the gold effect frame, which is a Streets Ahead miniature. Overall size including the frame is 2 1/2 x 2 inches approx.
Buying These Paintings
These two miniature paintings are currently ( at the time of writing) listed for sale in my Etsy online store.
I ship worldwide from Southend-on-Sea, England, in fact my art is currently in 16 countries on 4 continents as far as I know ….. which I am very proud of and have to pinch myself when I think about it !!
A collector of my miniature art, who is a dolls house collector and miniaturist contacted me a short while ago as she was starting her latest project, a miniature 1:12th scale haberdashery, come dress shop, come Ladies boutique, in a vintage period style, and she asked me to paint some specific pieces of miniature art for her new project.
Commissioned to paint for a themed property
So I have been commissioned to paint for this interesting project and I’m having a lot of fun painting in the theme, with an open brief my imagination and Wax has been flowing.
I have worked with Tricia before on her Dance Studio and she has quite a collection of my miniature Art In Wax. These are some of the paintings for her haberdashery store, which is now underway, the building shell of the shop can be seen in the picture above, once the property is complete I am hoping Tricia will let us see the finished shop, with all it’s Art In Wax on display.
The mannequin dress painted panels are 13 cm high and will be mounted in the wall. The panels tie in with the set of four miniature pieces each with the project theme, period style dresses, sewing, threads, wool and yarn. All these pieces are painted in Encaustic paint on specialist gloss card which is cream in colour. The most recent piece, finished this week is the antique style sewing machine and and basket of fabric painting.
The two mixed media advertising style plaques, are unusual and a unique challenge of their own.
Mixed Media Miniature Art In Wax
This painting style like a sign, plaque or advertisement works great as a miniature for a dollhouse size shop. Giving a very unique and personal feel to the art. I have in the past painted in this style for property signs and personalised art.
The paintings are a combination of ink and encaustic Wax paint. I used my computer and printed the ink lettering into a semi sheen (and semi absorbent) card support then wax painted over the printing, this seals the print into the painting and then I paint the picture. Only the text is printed.
Commission A Piece Of Dolls House Art.
Commissioning a piece of my art is easy …. so why not Contact me and have a painting commissioned for your dolls house or miniature property.
I do like to try new subjects and over the past week I have been playing around with ideas on the theme of including a birdcage into my paintings, birdcages are popular topics for paintings and home decor.
If you follow my blog or Facebook page you will know I am an artist with a passion for painting in encaustic wax paint and in miniature which is a challenge at times but great fun…… my point however is that I’m an eclectic artist, yes I love to paint flowers, landscapes, seascapes but I also like to challenge myself or be challenged by other subjects.
I hope you like these new pieces of my art, all original as always.
Blossom settings with the birdcage in the trees, flowers in a shabby chic style and a butterfly appears in one, and of course there had to be a fairy …… and she has let the bird out of the cage !!
Edit : the two blossom birdcage paintings are now sold, I showed them on facebook this afternoon and they are off to Wales to a collector tomorrow.
