Dancing has many psychological and physical benefits, but one of the best benefits is the stress relief it provides. When most people think of the benefits of dancing, they often think of the physical benefits. Dancing is, frankly, one of the best forms of exercise you can do, and it has helped many people lose weight and reach their fitness goals. However, the benefits of dancing don’t stop there. In addition to the physical benefits of dance, there are also many psychological benefits, including stress relief. In our last blog, we talked about the consequences of chronic stress, and once you understand how detrimental chronic stress can be, finding an effective way to relieve it becomes essential. Here are a few of the ways that ballroom dancing, as well as other forms of dancing, can help to relieve your stress: #1. Dancing releases feel-good hormones. In our last blog, we talked a lot about the stress hormone, cortisol, and the effects it can have on your body, mind and emotions in the long-term. When you dance, it prompts the release of hormones, serotonin and endorphins, that make you feel good. #2. Dancing helps to flush the body of toxins. Not only do the hormones that get released when you dance help you to feel really good, but they also help to flush out cortisol and other damaging chemicals that can build up inside of you when you are under chronic stress. #3. Dancing increases the mind-body connection. When you dance, you are basically meditating as you move. Meditation isn’t about chanting or breathing in a specific way, it’s about finding a deeper connection with your body and looking inward. Dancing helps us to do that by helping you become more aware of exactly how your own individual body copes with stress, such as muscle tension, headaches, etc. #4. Dancing gives you something else to focus on. One of the most difficult aspects of stress is that, when you are stressed about a particular issue, you are likely to spend much of your time dwelling on it, which can quickly lead to a downward spiral of stress. Luckily, dancing gives you a welcome distraction. Ballroom dancing, for instance, requires attention to detail, and when you are focused on your dance moves, you won’t have to focus on whatever is stressing you out. #5. Dancines allows you to express yourself. Stress can build up inside of us overtime, and many of us don’t have a good outlet for expressing just how stressed we are feeling, particularly with the “buck-up” attitude many people have here in the United States. Dancing is a form of self expression like nothing else, and while you may not feel like you can get whatever is stressing you off of your chest by talking to someone, dancing is an outlet that can help you effectively blow off some steam. Chronic stress is a problem for many adults in the United States, and if you are looking for an effective way to relieve your stress, sign up for classes with Arthur Murray Dance Centers today!
