Make things easier for yourself (and your neighbors) by remembering to keep your noise levels appropriate.

Living alongside other families has a whole host of benefits that come from living somewhere with a sense of community. One downside is that every so often, one person’s enjoyment may infringe on another person’s comfort—that’s right, we’re talking about noise levels. If you’ve ever lived next to a noisy neighbor, you know how frustrating it can be. If you’re the noisy neighbor yourself, maybe you’ll learn a thing or two! Let’s take a look at how you can keep your noise levels from getting out of control and how to navigate noise issues that you may experience with your own neighbors.

Keeping Your Sound Levels Reasonable

When it comes to maintaining good sound levels, remember that the responsibility is placed on you to be considerate of the people around you. That means that keeping the basics in mind, like the time of day and how loud you’re listening to music, in the back of your mind. Things happen and we sometimes make mistakes in not realizing how loud we’re being, but nonetheless, it’s important that you do everything in your power to keep the noise reasonable. There’s a few tips and tricks to help mitigate the problem, like installing thicker curtains or putting down some throw rugs, but generally you want to avoid watching loud TV, listening to loud music, or having loud conversations late at night.

Talk to Each Other

If you’re experiencing issues with your neighbor being too loud or you’re worried that you may be the loud neighbor yourself, try talking it over. Noise complaints rarely result in things like eviction because it’s generally such an easy thing to resolve amicably. In most cases, it happens as a result of one party not even realizing how loud they’re being. Take the initiative and double check that you’re not causing any issues for your neighbors by popping by, saying hello, and checking in on them.

Where Does it Go From There?

If possible, it’s best to come to a solution that incorporates both parties and doesn’t escalate at all. If you’ve tried talking to your neighbor in the past but noise continues to be a problem, let your landlord or leasing agency know so they can step in and become involved. No one wants the problem to go too far and all parties have incentives to peacefully solve the problem.

Before you rush into getting a pet for your apartment, make sure you’re following the right steps and are properly prepared.

Having a pet in your apartment is a great way to give yourself some extra comfort and have something to really look forward to when you get home. With that in mind, having a pet isn’t always right for apartment dwellers: if you don’t have enough space, room for a larger dog may not be available, or you may live with someone who is allergic, or your apartment complex may not even allow pets. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t get a pet if you live in an apartment, just that it’s important to be aware of all of the considerations. Let’s take a look at everything you ought to know before getting a pet for your apartment.

What Does Your Apartment Allow?

First and foremost, before asking anything else, it’s important that you know whether or not you’re even allowed to have a pet. Different landlords and leasing agencies will all have different policies regarding what kinds of animals are allowed, what sizes of animals are acceptable, and even what kinds of breeds are allowed. It’s important to make sure that your pet meets whatever requirements exist and that if there’s a pet fee in place, you and the property owner have communicated about how that will be paid. Here at the Apartments of Wildewood, we request that you speak to a manager before getting a pet for approval so we can all be on the same page.

What About Anyone You Live With?

If you have family members or roommates, it’s important to be on the same page about getting a pet. Animals have a whole lot of needs—from a financial standpoint to required attention and things like getting walked or being played with. It’s no fun having an understimulated pet who ends up acting out as a result. Everyone in your apartment should feel comfortable with a pet and not have any allergies that could cause problems.

Is Having a Pet Right For Your Situation?

Do you have time to take care of a pet? Do you plan on being able to own a pet for the duration of its life? It’s not a good idea to adopt a pet that you plan on not being able to keep so it’s important to be sure that you’re in a financial and life position to be able to. Giving adequate attention to your pet is critical as well as being able to afford regular vet visits, food, and toys!

Are you hosting guests in your apartment for the holiday season? Make sure to follow these tips.

It’s the time for holidays and that means hosting guests for many of us. However, having guests stay with you if you’re in a smaller apartment can sometimes be stressful, as you want to all cohabitate without tripping over one another. Sure, you may not have the luxury of a dedicated guest room, but there are still plenty of ways to make your loved ones feel at home. Get yourself ready for the holiday season—and the guests that may come with it—by following these three tips for accommodating guests in an apartment.

1. Find Sleeping Space

First and foremost, you need somewhere for them to sleep. Having a dedicated guest bed is the easiest way to do this, but a pull-out sofa, or even regular sofa, are other common options. You may also want to look into air mattresses. These can be easily stored away when not in use and are surprisingly comfortable, not to mention they aren’t nearly as expensive as they once were and can be found for fairly reasonable prices online. If none of these are an option or you’re just hosting multiple guests, finding the softest floor and making it softer via extra blankets and cushions is a great last resort for very temporary guests.

2. Make Sure You Have Room For Their Belongings

Remember: guests come along with baggage. That means you need to have adequate space for them to put their luggage, as you don’t want to force them to have to walk out to the car every morning for a fresh pair of clothes. Before guests arrive, remember to clear some space for their bags. This can be a dedicated table or shelf, or even just a space beneath a table, but make sure you’ve cleared some room for their bags to go that is still easily accessible to them and doesn’t require them to enter your own bedroom or something like that.

3. Throw In Some Extras

It’s always wise to keep some extra toiletries around in case you have guests over. This means keeping a spare bottle of shampoo, body soap, toothpaste, and even a few extra toothbrushes is a good idea. People often forget these things and having them on-hand shows that you’re a quality host. Lastly, remember to keep fresh towels in your apartment—many people forego putting towels in their luggage because they take up so much room but still need one once they arrive.

It’s official: it’s cold outside! Make sure your apartment is nice and warm for the upcoming holidays with these tips.

Cold weather is starting to really set in, and if you’re anything like us, there are few things more frustrating than coming home out of the cold weather only to find that your apartment isn’t as warm and toasty as you expected. Thankfully, with just a few decor tips, you can ensure that your apartment is the warm, cozy home you’ve always wanted—particularly during the winter. Before the weather really gets cold, try out these decorating tips to keep your apartment at an ideal temperature and make you look forward to coming home after a day in the cold!

Cozy Entertaining Spaces

After walking through the snow to get to your apartment, there’s nothing more relaxing than coming home to a warm couch covered in thick blankets so you can lay down and watch a film. Check around for some plush blankets that are perfect for throwing down on your sofa and adding an extra layer. Keeping even more blankets thrown over the backs of chairs is a great winter aesthetic, as well, and means you have another layer of warmth on hand for when things get really chilly!

Warm Up Your Floors

Let’s face it: no one wants to have to deal with cold floors. Tile in your bathroom or hardwood in your living spaces may have huge benefits year round, but one drawback is that they don’t retain heat very well at all. In your living room and bedrooms, try adding an extra throw rug to keep your feet from freezing. Bathrooms can benefit massively from thicker bath mats which offer you a chance to dry off after a shower without having to worry about freezing cold tiles.

Prevent Drafts

Cold air seeping into your apartment is only inevitable, but there are a few trick you can employ to reduce the effect. Hanging fabrics against your walls can be a great way to add a touch of design to a space, but it also helps in keeping your apartment insulated. You can also hang up thicker wool curtains around windows, which prevents cold air from getting in nearly as much and goes a long way in making your apartment stay nice and toasty this winter.

Trying to prepare the perfect Thanksgiving dinner in your apartment? Give these tips a shot and see how it goes!

Thanksgiving is just about upon us which is fantastic news for those of us who like to kick back with some family members, catch up on each other’s lives, and enjoy some great food along the way. However, there’s also a good amount of stress that can come with prepping for the holiday, especially if you feel constrained by a smaller apartment space. With the right planning and the right guest list, there’s really nothing to worry about. Try sticking to these five steps to plan the perfect Thanksgiving dinner in your apartment this holiday season.

1. Plan It Out

If you leave every decision until last minute, you’ll find yourself more stressed than you need to be. Put together a list of what kinds of food you want to cook so you can figure out a solid shopping list and make sure you get everything you want. Take inventory and double check that you have all the plates, utensils, chairs, etc. that are important to have on hand.

2. Ready Your Apartment

Take some time to rearrange furniture and make sure all your walkways are clear. If you’re hosting dinner in a small space, try to move some things out temporarily to open up the room. Take the time to clean your fridge out and do some clutter reduction in your kitchen so things move smoothly when you need to cook.

3. Get Ready For Dinner

Speaking of when you need to cook, it’s always wise to do as much prep work as you can. If you’re making turkey, just remember that it will end up using your oven for just about the whole day, so if you have any other dishes that need to be made in the oven, it’s good to make them beforehand and then just reheat them. Alternatively, make dishes that can be made entirely on the stovetop.

4. Clean in Increments

Instead of taking on all the cleaning at once, try to clean as you go. When you put down decorations, pick up some trash. When you’re cooking and spill something, clean it up right away. By taking things as they come, you get far less overwhelmed.

5. Final Touches

Add a bit of flair to your apartment to make it stand out! Simply by putting down a centerpiece, adding a wreath to your front door, or lighting a few decorative candles, you can really create the perfect Thanksgiving dinner party.

Struggling with clutter in your apartment? Give these tips a shot to get your life in order again.

Apartment renters are typically unified in their belief that apartments are beneficial because of a number of hot issues: you don’t need to worry about maintenance, you can interface with a local community easier, you have access to valuable amenities, and so on. While these benefits are undeniable, so is the fact that apartments just don’t and can’t offer the same space as large single family homes. For many, that’s not a drawback, and for many more, that means keeping your possessions to the essentials. If you’re concerned with your apartment being filled by clutter, try following these three steps to keep your space feeling clean.

1. Cutting Down On Clutter

Do you ever come home and think, “I just own too many things,” because you aren’t alone in that sentiment. Many people these days are realizing the value in heading towards a more minimalist lifestyle and making reasonable cutbacks in their physical possessions. If you want to take a look at what you own, try laying out everything in your closet and deciding what you really need. Box up what you don’t need and try to donate it to someone who does. Losing sight of what’s important can result in us piling up our pointless possessions, so it’s nice to take the time every once in a while to properly assess that.

2. Maximize On Existing Storage

If you already own suitcases, there’s no need to leave them as empty storage for the majority of the year when you aren’t on vacation. Instead, consider storing those seasonal clothes that you don’t have a place for otherwise in your unused suitcases. This is a big help in keeping your apartment free from seasonal clothing clutter and also giving some more utility to the otherwise wasted space that suitcases can generate.

3. Introducing New Clutter-Free Solutions

Does your apartment have a clutter problem in terms of your clothes, books, or other material possessions, but feels empty in terms of furniture? Consider investing in a nightstand for storing a few of those books, a wardrobe for your clothes, or even a platform bed that you can put whatever you’d like under. Much of what goes into having a clutter-free apartment boils down to having the right furniture.

Apartments and townhomes are often the perfect place for families to grow and live.

Many people tend to think of rental properties as ideal for younger families, couples, or even college students trying to get their footing in the world. While it’s true that renting an apartment or townhome often makes sense for these demographics, it’s also the case that these kinds of dwellings really work for all kinds of families. Apartments and townhomes are fantastic for a range of families and have some big benefits that may be unexpected.

1. Communities Benefit Families

Apartments and townhomes are both places that, by definition, require you to be close to your neighbors. For some people, the thought of having to share walls with other people might be unappealing, but this can actually be a huge part in incubating a sense of community. It gives children an opportunity to socialize and make friends within their own neighborhoods as well as giving parents the ability to easily integrate into a community, learn more about where they live, and work to improve things for everyone.

2. Less Maintenance, More Time For Family

In a rental, you don’t have to worry about doing regular maintenance work. For a family with children, this can be especially beneficial as you just may not have the time to fix a toilet or showerhead yourself when something goes wrong. When you’re concerned about going to work to pay bills all while managing being a good parent, not having to worry about the sudden expense of something breaking can be a huge benefit.

3. Take Advantage of Recreational Perks

Many of these communities come with amazing amenities that can really change how your family interacts with one another. For example, the Apartments of Wildewood have an on-site fitness center, a clubhouse, two pools, and more. Living in a community where you don’t need to constantly worry over whether or not your children are safe and being able to enjoy the benefits of renting is a great comfort for families.

Get your apartment living room organized right and it will completely change how you live.

The layout of a room isn’t purely a matter of aesthetics. A lot of what goes into arranging a room is centered around accessibility and functionality. Because living rooms are such a heavily used space in an apartment, it’s important that you arrange things in such a way that promotes good traffic flow and makes your space beautiful-yet-functional. Let’s take a look at four ideas to keep in mind when you go to arrange the furniture in your apartment living room.

1. Using Rugs

An area rug can add a splash of color to a living room and act as a real focal point. However, there is some consideration about placement, as thicker area rugs can actually be a hazard. Typically this isn’t much of a problem, but keeping area rugs away from any entryways and walkways is a good idea. Having some clearance around your rug helps with people seeing the area rug before you walk on it. Just be careful to make sure any furniture that goes on your area rugs is entirely on it, otherwise it can lead to wobbly furniture.

2. Apartment Entryways

This applies to any of the entryways in your apartment but especially in the ones in your living room: keep them clear. This allows easy access and lets you walk around without having to worry about bumping into any furniture.

3. Wall Clearance

Sometimes when we’re organizing a room, we have a tendency to push everything up against walls in an attempt to make the most of a space. There are a few issues with doing this though, as it can make a room feel uninviting and empty. No matter the size of a room, you want to put around 12 inches between the wall and furniture. Plus, putting furniture you sit in too close to a wall can result in scuffs and scratches on the wall.

4. Maintaining Walking Space

Most interior designers recommend the three-foot rule. What that means is leaving three feet of walking room throughout your living room. This prevents people from bumping into furniture and feeling claustrophobic.

Sensitive to noise coming from your neighbors? These three tricks may help you cut down on noise in your apartment.

No matter how numerous the benefits of living in an apartment are (and there are plenty!), you always run the risk of having to deal with unwanted noise in your apartment. Whether you’re facing a busy street or just have loud neighbors above, below, or beside you, it’s no wonder that so many apartment residents are looking for ways to reduce outside noise—especially for those of us who work during the night and are trying to sleep during the day! Give these three tips a shot to see if you can get rid of excessive noise coming into your apartment.

1. Blocking Outside Noise

When it comes to outside noise like traffic or kids playing near your apartment, your best bet is to find something to cover the windows. Something like triple-paned glass would certainly help, but that’s simply not a feasible option for most apartment residents. Instead, try heavy, thick drapes around your windows. The thickness of the material should be helpful in keeping all that pesky noise down so you can get the peace and quiet you need.

2. Blocking Neighborly Noise

Strategically placing furniture can help cut down on the noise between apartments. Try putting a bookcase up against a wall or you can even look into acoustic panels with art on them that help absorb some of that sound while still looking stylish. As for noise coming up through your floor, using area rugs—and even doubling up on them—can help absorb some of that noise coming from your below neighbor. If neighbors are the cause, you can always talk to them about the issue as long as you’re respectful and reasonable.

3. Coping With Noise

If all else fails and you’re still struggling with noise pollution, one idea is to try to cover it up. This can mean something as simple as leaving a fan running or leaving a TV with the volume set low enough that it’s not obtrusive, but you can also try a dedicated white noise machine. White noise is constant noise that’s meant to help you sleep easier, stress less, and focus on things other than your noisy neighborhood.

Stop stressing about being unproductive in your apartment and give these tips a shot instead.

These days, more and more people are working from home, enrolling in online classes, or just trying to take some time to better themselves and learn a new skill or two. That’s why there’s also a push for people to be able to set up their own home office, whether it’s a dedicated room or just a corner in another space, to be productive and get work done. None of that is very helpful if you’re spending your time in your apartment getting distracted by other things, however. Here are a few tips for staying on task when working from your apartment.

Use Lists

If you’re not sure what you need to do in a given timeframe, it can be all that much more difficult to actually get it done. Plot out some time to make a list of everything that needs to be done and then, once that list is completed, rewrite it in terms of prioritization. This way, you know what tasks are most important to get done, and what smaller tasks also need to be finished but may not be as critical. Prioritizing helps you keep your mind on what’s most important.

Create an Apartment Workspace

Not all of us have the luxury of having a dedicated private office. Sometimes, you just have to work with what you’re given, and in the case of your apartment, that may be a key way to increase your productivity. Having an area, even if it’s just a seat at your dining table with all of your work-related materials, can really help put you into the mindset of productivity.

Minimize Distractions

Part of creating that workspace is the atmosphere—and that means reducing your available distractions as well. Turn the TV off, put your phone in a drawer, keep your browser tabs work-related, and you will find yourself working much more efficiently. It’s good to take breaks at times to quickly rejuvenate and get your mind back where it needs to be, but trying to do work with distractions around only compromises your productivity and can make you frustrated with where you’re at.
