Donated Jacket I am blessed that I periodically get sent a donated jacket from people that are not necessarily wanting anything back for it. This particular one was from a Facebook friend. I promised when it was no longer a jacket that I would donate some money to charity. The charity will be leukemia . In the last few months I have also received a very very old school teacher style brief case. I haven't decided yet what it will become, probably a few mens desk type items, pencil case, jotter mat, wallet, change holder etc. A very unexpected donated item which sits in my hubb is a Louis Vuitton classic handbag, that stopped me in my tracks when I opened the parcel. People are incredibly generous. Keep popping back for new items evolving from who knows what.

Ever wondered if you can use that old 1980's coat again? So the jacket was sourced ready to make a large tan tote. Bat-winged leather jackets are always was favourite to fashion into bags, loads of extra leather in those massive sleeves. I knew this was going to be an unusual deconstruction, I wasn't just ripping the seams apart I needed to remove some of the jackets key features, this isn't what I normally do, my bags always take on the original jacket tucks and pleats etc but for this tote my customer said she wanted it as plain as possible which is also just fine and works really well with the style of the bag. I like a challenge so the deconstruction began, I needed to remove the pleats from under the two front pockets and replace with some flatter leather from the back section. After meeting up with my customer we discussed lining choices and hatched a plan to use her daughters small hacking jacket and pretty spotty skirt teamed with her husbands jeans. These bags are always the most satisfying where the inside carries sentiment and special memories for the customer. Adding a large zip pocket to one side of the lining, as a rule I add a phone pocket but the back part of the jeans includes the back pocket suitable for the phone so job done! The hacking jacket was super cute and with cute things it's always difficult to get the scissors to it. Her daughter had long since grown out of the jacket so it was a perfect choice to re use. Mens jeans are a great choice inside for the lining too with the big back pocket, just right for a large smart phone to slip into. To finish the bag I sourced a rather nice brass buckle and made a simple plain belt.   https://youtu.be/yiGeB_xTGMc            https://youtu.be/-H0_fBlr694 https://youtu.be/sIup6ogiMtE Take a look through my gallery for the other totes that have evolved from other jackets. Here's one from a goat skin jacket. All scraps left over leather from the larger bags all get resused again into small leather accessories like these handbag pouches and earbuddys and the left over scraps from those small items gets reused the third time round and made into these necklaces Thanks for dropping by my blog, I hope you've enjoyed reading and seeing the process. If you've enjoyed it feel free to share and comment below. thank you

Repurposing Tan Mens Jacket to Hobo Today I am working on repurposing atan mens jacket to hobo. These commissions are ultimately my most favourite especially if the jacket is outdated it is super satisfying giving it a brand new life. I am not saying men can't be thoughtful or romantic but I am always surprised when a man contacts me with his own ideas for a surprise gift for his partner/wife. We agree on the most favourable jacket from my stock and I set about deconstructing. See the first video for tips on how to deconstruct your jacket ready for pattern cutting. https://youtu.be/dNIuAZEJJOc During the process of deconstruction I remove the lining and generally throw it away, whilst I love aged leather garments I am never a fan of the lining, they are usually unstable fabrics that have seen better days destined for the bin. Next stage is to lay the pattern on the separated sections of the jacket and decide which feature parts will become the different sections of the bag. For this bag I had already decided that the beautiful pockets will sit together pretty much as they had on the original coat. https://youtu.be/vrVSHof3tM8 The bottom lower pockets became the side gusset sections. All in all the bag will have all four great useable pockets to the outer part of the bag, a must for a mummy of three with plenty of little things of theirs to carry. My customer provided me his wedding shirt for the lining, I add a purse zip pocket and leave the chest shirt pocket in situ a mobile phone, also keeping the shirt buttons gives it a quirkiness too. A lovely touch and beautiful memory for his wife, I am really looking forward to her thoughts when he hands it over very soon. Here's the finished mens jacket transformed to large hobo bag. Check out the final video too. If you would like any patterns or help making your first leather bag from a garment feel free to contact me.   https://youtu.be/4CarO3TTbrc   PS: Please leave a comment and share with your friends if you found this post valuable and go across to my website for more upcycled creations from the past, from clothing and furniture etc, and 'how to' make leather bags from a jacket. Good things come to those who wait. We had spoken about the bag way back before we had even found the suitable jacket for the bag. The brief was a pewter leather, I had trawled the online sales site, ebay etc and not even come close to finding one. They are rare and I knew that it was only a matter of time before one turned up and wow when it did I was blown away, good things come to those who wait! The colour was perfect and the leather butter soft. My customer had found it in a little shop in Brighton, I knew it was going to be perfect for the bag. Here the first video I made about the jacket on Facebook Live. https://youtu.be/x1fKuyej8Og The Prada inspired bag evolving is slightly scaled down size to the normal one I usually make but it will be equally beautiful just you wait. Here's the next video showing you the next stages of the bag taking shape. https://youtu.be/kJPXuAZduRI Finally after making all the sections of the lining from the vintage Diesel shirt I sew all the outer and inner sections together, leaving the handle until last. I hope you are getting value from my videos. Here is the final one in this series for this Prada inspired upcycled leather hobo. https://youtu.be/4xYX4pI6Wy4 PS: Please leave a comment and share with your friends if you found this post valuable and go across to my website for more upcycled creations from the past, from clothing and furniture etc, and 'how to' make leather bags from a jacket. Nicole Farhi Leather Skirt Gets The Chop There has only been a couple of occasions I can recall when I have been handed a garment for upcycling and I have looked at it and thought uh oh, I really don't want to cut this one up,one being this Nicole Farhi skirt and a world war german trench coat ! When this beautiful Nicole Farhi leather skirt landed in my hands I instantly fell in love with it, I looked at it for a couple days before finally having the courage to take the scissors to it. The leather is butter soft lambs leather and the sort that is irresistible to the touch. We agreed on the style of bag the skirt will become and the pattern literally took up the whole skirt with nothing left over. This was going to be a challenge for sure, no room for error, I am so used to having the extra leather from the sleeves of a jacket to complete my bags and for this one the leather was limited. Thankfully my client supplied a rather delicious vintage leather belt for the strap it would be a perfect addition to the soft skirt leather, complete opposites but works really well. Mixing the old with the new always sparks interest, and a godsend as none of the skirt leather would be left over to fashion a strap. Adding a thin strip of the brown skirt to the edge of the belt tied them both together a treat. The lining from the skirt will also be utilised, a two tone satin, not usually my most favourite of fabrics to work with as slightly unstable when cut but it was fine with some iron on cotton to the reverse, I use the fabric backer on most of my linings to add some slight stiffness to the thinner fabrics. I start to deconstruct the skirt and decide that I will make my seams the same as they are on the skirt already, it will also take care of the fact that I have limited leather, a minimal seam allowance and apart from that it will look more in line with what I already have in the skirt seams. https://youtu.be/150o5hUUnDE And finally here's the final video of the finished Nicole farhi skirt starting its new life as a Prada inspired bucket hobo. https://youtu.be/XhuV4UZr-Zk PS: Please leave a comment and share with your friends if you found this post valuable and go across to my website for more upcycled creations from the past, from clothing and furniture etc, and 'how to' make leather bags from a jacket. So You Ruined Your Biker Leathers So you ruined your biker leathers, it doesn't have to mean the dustbin.  Here's what you can do, have them preserved and made them into something useful , an overnight bag, a laptop bag or any other type bag, maybe you got a set of leathers that are no longer good enough for wearing because you've damaged them racing or maybe they just don't fit anymore, too small, too big, maybe you've lost weight or gained weight, maybe they are out of season, what ever the reason that you no longer wear them let's talk about what we can repurpose them into. One aspect of my upcycling leather business is to make something that has sentimental value to you. Perhaps you have hung onto the leathers from a loved one that you've lost. Maybe your child rides a bike and has rapidly grown and in need of a new set of leathers and you don't want to part with them because of the memories they hold of race events etc. Unfortunately the owner of this leather jacket had a bad crash, I'm happy to say he survived and judging by the damage to certain parts of the jacket it was obvious that the quality leather jacket had done its bit in saving his life,  when it arrived with me it was evident that there had been a bad smash. The titanium shoulder pads were badly dented and road rash along parts of the leather. I know that emergency services had removed the jacket from the rider with a sharp pair of scissors rendering it no longer wearable ! Take a sneak peak of what I made a the Dainese leather jacket into here. https://youtu.be/MUaLOtnDss4 Please leave a comment and share with you friends if you found this post valuable. Aly Ashton –

Repurposing Old Harley Davidson Jacket I have a fair few hundred bags under my belt now but always wanted to have a go at repurposing an old Harley Davidson jacket into a cool weekend bag. I'd looked out for one for ages and bidded up on a few on Ebay, but they always went for more than my budget.

As if by magic I meet a guy through my Facebook page and he starts to tell me all about his Harley Davidson accessories collection including this very cool 100th Anniversary edition Jacket with the logo to the back of the jacket, within a few days of meeting him and chatting about designs etc the jacket falls into my hands. This particular jacket has caused me to be hesitant with the scissors, there was to be no random joining sections together, I knew that each panel needed to be bang on to incorprate all the emblems neatly, You'll see what I mean later on in the post.Check out the first of the 3 videos below for some more chat about the jacket from minute 3.31.

https://youtu.be/aOeaIfkBKDg The In between Stage So after a few exchanged Facebook messages we agree on the basic design. My customer especially wanted to keep the memorable labelling in the lining with it being the 100th anniversary piece. I don't normally like using lining but this one was pretty special and reused it too. I've made this style of bag many times before in different dimensions to suit the particular jacket, for this one I adjusted the gusset shape and width. The front and back panels were smaller than normal deeper gusset to make it into a roomy weekend bag. It's still hand luggage cabin sized so really super useful. The sections coming together in the part 2 video here. https://youtu.be/zuIb6_oLW38 Finally the finished weekend bag is here https://youtu.be/kpHURpe6XjI Please share, comment and ping me your questions Aly Ashton - Saving items from landfill everyday of my life ! What !! it's NOT Leather I love being handed someones old jacket to make it into something special, the excitement of checking out the leather for the first time and seeing what features the jacket has to reuse in the bag, on first contact with this jacket it was a brief exchange, from their car boot to my own, I discussed their requirements and tucked it away in my schedule for a few days. (keep following the videos in their order as there's a twist in the tale !!)     https://youtu.be/2K1IBBb7zU8 When the information comes from a reliable source that the jacket is 'leather' I had no reason on first contact to disbelief him, he had no reason to state it was something that it wasn't but the truth of the matter is he was duped at the point of sale, and worn it for some time believing it was leather. I myself had only handled it for a few minutes so hadn't closely inspected it, but as soon as the heavy fleece and brushed cotton lining was removed, it revealed the jacket to be something other than leather , I could not believe it but was some sort of waxed cotton, gorgeous never the less but definitely NOT  Leather. Dilemma, my customer is expecting a cool new leather holdall overnight bag from his leather jacket thats not leather, how do I break the news to him. And even more embarrassing I have dismantled the jacket to make it unwearable and may not be actually useable for the job. https://youtu.be/0odO7jqGSjw Ok , all is well, my customer is surprised the jacket isn't leather and so was I but we hatch a plan to mix the waxed jacket material with a really old leather waistcoat and I am excited how it all comes together. Taking the fab pockets and the elbow pads to form the front and back of the bag , it is starting to shape and using the old waistcoat to add as an element of leather to it works well. https://youtu.be/eKe6TMuUGZg As you can see from video 3 the weekend bag/holdall is a really simply pattern, very few pattern pieces but like most bag making the preparation takes far longer than the actual sewing together of the bag. Here is the final video and finished pics of the bag. Feel free to message me if you would like any help with your project. https://youtu.be/S8k7SycOTe0 PS: Please leave a comment and share with your friends if you found this post valuable and go across to my website for more upcycled creations from the past, from clothing and furniture etc, and 'how to' make leather bags from a jacket.
