Answers About Summer Landscapes In Maryland

Landscapes in Maryland take a little extra abuse than ones in other parts of the country. Hot and humid summers along with dense clay soil means that our landscapes require a little extra TLC. The following are answers to some of the most asked questions from our customers.

How often should I water my lawn?

Watering a lawn is important for the grass plants that make it up to thrive, but just as important is watering your lawn correctly. Once the hot, dry season hits, lawns need to be watered about 2-3 times per week, even if it rains a little. If it rains a lot, back off to accommodate.

For information on how to water a lawn correctly, visit our blog 7 Things To Know About Water Your Lawn

What about watering my flower pots?

Flower pots are a special case when it comes to water requirements. Unlike plants that are in garden beds, plants that are in pots are fairly exposed to the elements. Additionally, most soil medias used in potted gardens are designed to drain well. Because of both of these factors, plants in pots dry out very fast. Water flower pots daily. It is recommended to water them until water seeps out the bottom of the pot. Also, make sure you are watering the root system, which actually takes up the water for the plant. Leaves do not absorb water.

What should I do about my spring bulbs?

Your daffodils, tulips and other spring bulbs looked fantastic in the spring. Now what is left is bunches of foliage that is slumping over and making your garden look sloppy. Unfortunately, these leaves play an important role in creating

energy for the bulb to use next year. Patience is key here. Wait until the leaves turn brown before cutting them off.

How should I handle my perennials that look overcrowded?

What a joy it is to see full grown perennials, until they are overgrown. Now your garden looks unruly. Good news! Most perennials can be divided which means you will have a less crowded garden and additional perennials to plant elsewhere or to give to friends as gifts. Perennials such as daylilies, hostas, helleborus and peonies all divide well. Dividing perennials is a simple task.

To find out how to divide perennials, see our blog post How To Divide Perennials

When should I prune Azaleas?

Azaleas are a spring blooming shrub. This means that they begin developing flower buds for the following year soon after they complete blooming. Having said that, there is about an eight week window in which it is safe to prune azaleas without risking next year’s blooms. Generally, that means that azaleas can be prune into early August. Of course, if you do not mind missing the flowers next season, they can be pruned at any time.

When should I apply lime to my lawn?

Lime is used to help adjust soil pH into a range (6.0 – 6.5) that turf grass can best utilize available nutrients. This is necessary because our soils are naturally acidic and sometimes go below the acceptable pH range. Lime is not a pesticide nor is it a fertilizer, so it does not cause growth that could be damaged by drought or heat. Therefore, it is safe to apply lime any time of the year when the ground is not frozen. Always have a soil test done before applying lime so the correct amount can be applied.

Try These Deer Resistant Sun Loving Annuals

You know the frustration. You spend hours of valuable free time (not to mention a few hard-earned bucks) picking out annuals, preparing the garden bed, planting the annuals, mulching them in, and watering them, only to have them munched down to the ground before the next morning. Frustrating is the polite way of saying how you fell upon discovery. Deer do not care how hard you worked or how much you spent. All they see is a nicely laid out salad bar to feast upon.

The fact of the matter is, you planted what they like to eat. Sorry, the truth hurts. Choosing the correct plants is a key to having successful annual flowers in deer populated areas. Although no list is fool-proof (deer will eat anything if they are hungry enough), the following sun loving annuals have been fairly reliable to gardeners over the years.

Sun Loving Annuals We Love A Few Tips When Planting Annuals In Deer Populated Areas
  1. Even though deer may not prefer a particular plant, they may choose to taste it in passing. Do not be alarmed if you notice some bites taken out of a plant or two. If they liked it, they would have eaten the whole plant.
  2. Deer lift their head when they chew in order to keep an eye out for predators (ironic, the only predators in most areas are Fords and Chevrolets). You may find some plants left sitting on top of the ground when the deer decided it was not a tasty plant. Simply tuck the plant snuggly back into the ground and water it.
  3. It is always a good idea to apply some deer repellent on newly planted plants. This helps train the deer to stay away.

Give Your Garden Some Pop With These Beautiful Spring Annuals

There are lots of really interesting and beautiful spring annuals available in garden centers these days. The colors and textures can make any garden or flower pot simply “pop” with interest. So, why stick with the same ones every year? Now it the time to try some of these underused and very beautiful spring annuals.

Creeping Jenny

A great annual to use trailing over the rim of flower pots but also great in shade gardens. The lime green foliage really adds a splash of color. This is the perfect plant for window boxes and to provide a splash accent to any container.

Angelonia

This upright, somewhat bush annual is noted for its long summer bloom of small snapdragon-like flowers. Plants typically grow 12-18” tall. Foliage is slightly aromatic. Bloom from late spring to early fall in narrow terminal spikes (to 8” long). The two-lipped flowers are somewhat reminiscent of snapdragon. Cultivars are available in white, blue, light pink and bicolor flower colors. Deer do not eat!

Cosmos

Cosmos is a popular, low-maintenance, late-blooming, showy annual that typically grows 2-4’ tall with medium green, threadlike leaves. Blooms are 2-4” diameter with red, pink or white rays and yellow centers bloom freely from early summer to frost. Use a mix of the different colors available for a dazzling burst of garden color. Deer do not eat!

Gryphon Begonia

Not your grandmother’s Begonia. The foliage on this annuals is spectacular. Large, tropical-looking leaves, variegated in silver and green, prove just how dramatic foliage plants can be. A great choice for adding color and texture to beds or containers in shade to part shade

Bacopa

Here is an ideal plant to use around the edges of your flower pots. Available in white, pink and blue, its trailing habit looks fantastic draping over the sides. Bacopa will bloom and brighten your landscape well into fall.

Iresine

For glossy, bright red foliage, you can’t beat this plant. We use it to compliment other flowers as an accent or back row in garden beds and flower pots. Its color shows best in full sun. It typically grows to 2’.

Ivy Geranium

Ivy Geraniums provide a fantastic burst of color to any planting, and are particularly useful in potted gardens as they tend to trail rather than clump like other geraniums. Available in pinks and reds, this annual will give you season long brilliant color.

There are so many other interesting spring annuals flowers out there so there is never an excuse to having a boring garden. Explore and try new combinations. You’ll be glad you did.

Easy Tips For Keeping Your Home Landscape Maintenance On Schedule

For all of you do-it-yourselfers, out hats are off to you. Keeping up with all of the tasks involved in home landscape maintenance is a big undertaking. But, if that is what you are committed to, we offer the following tips to help make it easier.

Keep It Simple

Elaborate landscapes can be stunning but what good are they if you do not have the time to maintain them. Less elaborate landscapes can also be quite beautiful, and far less demanding from a landscape maintenance standpoint. There is no reason one cannot have all the features of a grand landscape; form, texture, interest and color, without the headaches. Using the right plant in the right place is the first place to start. Using plants that mature as close as possible to the desired size, choosing the correct plants for the light exposure, and making sure that soil moisture (too much or too little) is adequate for the chosen plants are all things to consider when making selections. Getting these cultural factors right are the first step to reducing time spent on home landscape maintenance.

Stay Ahead Of The Weeds

Weeds are the one plant you can always count on to thrive in your garden. What is the best way to keep them from taking over? Stay on top of pulling them. It is far easy and less disruptive to pull weeds when they are small and have not yet developed a solid root system. The older the weed, the more established the root system and the harder it is to fully remove them. Many weeds will re-grow from snapped off roots left in the ground. Devote a little time each week to walking around your gardens and removing small weeds that have grown since the last visit.

Hand Prune vs. Shearing

Believe it or not, hand pruning shrubs can often be faster than pruning with shears. This is because when you hand prune, you may only be triggering one node (the place on a branch where new leaves and shoots can grow from) versus triggering many nodes when shear pruning. The more nodes that are triggered, the more growth likely to occur after pruning.

The other reason hand pruning takes less time is that there is less clean up work to do afterwards. Leaving dead debris on plants or on the ground provides a starting point for insects and fungal diseases from which to attack your plants. Hand pruning only results in minimal debris which can easily be tossed onto a tarp or into a waiting wheelbarrow. Shear pruning produces much debris which must be raked out of the plant and off the ground under the plan. Much more work.

Inspect Often

Taking a close look at your plants often can head off damage and work later. Examining for insects pests and fungal diseases, and catching them early, means less work later. Catching problems early and treating them results in less replacement work down the road.

Use Ground Covers

It takes a lot of work to mulch a garden bed every year and keep it weed free throughout the season. One solution to this is to plant ground cover plants where possible. Ground covers naturally spread to cover wide areas, meaning less space that needs to be mulched each year. Ground covers also grow into a thick mass of plants, squeezing out space weeds could grow in. Some favorite ground cover plants include Pachysandra, Periwinkle, Blue Rug Juniper and Liriope.

If you ever find that home landscape maintenance is just too much work and you only want to enjoy your landscape, give Allentuck Landscaping Company a call. We have several home landscape maintenance programs to choose from.

Tips For Creating The Perfect Front Foundation Garden

Consider this. The front foundation garden is the dressing on your home. It is the first thing people notice about our home, and probably the first thing you notice when you come home. It can be boring, or, with a little  thought and planning, it can make your home shine.

A Layered Approach

This may seem like common sense but, the larger plants should go in the back and the smaller plants in the front. It is often best to use dense evergreen shrubs along the back row. These will provide a backdrop to the detail plants in front. Some good plants to consider for this are Otto Luyken Cherrylaurel, Boxwood and Densiform Yew.  Remember to keep the plants far enough away from the actual foundation to allow for future growth, space to work and air flow. This is a good time to remind you to make sure the soil grade is sloping away from your house for good drainage.

Lead Them To The Front Door

Now that you have the base of your foundation foundation garden down, it is time to work on getting the eyes of passer byers, and your guests for that matter, to the front door. This is done in two parts. First, choose a plant with some height to go on the corners. This can be an upright evergreen (Arborvitae, Spartan Juniper), a multi stem small tree (Kousa Dogwood, Crape Myrtle), or a large deciduous shrub (Nandina, Viburnum). In order to make room for this, it will probably be necessary to push the bed out in this area. Doing this will also give the garden shape a nice serpentine form. The second part is to plant something eye catching at either side of the front door so that the entrance is clearly noticeable. This can be a plant with interesting foliage color (Pieris, Dwarf Nandina) or a plant with a different form than the foundation shrubs (American Boxwood, Sky Pencil Holly).

Now For Some Fun

Now that you have the backbone of the front foundation garden in, it is time to add some detail. This is when you get to add flowering shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, ground covers, rocks, gravels and annuals. Be creative. Find color combinations and textures that you like. Give the garden bed some curves to break up the squareness of your house. As with all plantings, choose plants that will thrive in the light that is available and that you have time to properly care for.

Drainage Problem Solutions To Solve Most Drainage Problems

Finding the right drainage problem solution is an important step to solving what can become a major headache on any residential property. Drainage problems can cause expensive property damage, damage to landscaping and lawns, and even potential health issues. Drainage problem solutions often involve a multi-pronged plan using several different methodologies. The first step in identifying which drainage problem solution is right for an situation is identifying where water is coming from, and where it is going.

Solving drainage problems usually comes down to a few simple rules. Water always runs downhill and water will always find the easiest way to get to where it is going. The key to solving drainage problems usually comes in facilitating those two rule.

There is no one magical way to solve most drainage problems. The solution usually involves a combination of the following methods.

Grading For Results

The first step in deciding which drainage problem solution to employ involves making sure water is moving in the desired direction. This involves studying the grade and topography of the site. Making sure water can move away from a house or out of a low area is a good starting point. Remember the rules above; water always travels down hill. Creating slope away from a home makes sure that water moves away from it. Adding quality soil against the foundation can solve this. It may be necessary to temporarily lift and set aside existing plants, or, an opportunity to re-landscape the foundation. Making sure patios and other hardscape surface also slope away from the house is also important.

French Drains and Flow Wells

Sometimes there is just nowhere for the water to go. Low areas and depressions present a unique challenge to solving a drainage problem. The solution is to remove the water from the surface and help the water soak into the ground. French Drains and Flow-Wells are excellent drainage problem solutions for this. They are essentially gravel trenches or pits constructed just under the surface to act as holding areas for excess water. The water soaks through the ground surface into these areas until it can permeate further into the ground.

Downspout Pipes

There is a lot of water that is shed off a roof in a rainstorm. It is funneled into the gutters and then down the downspouts. Connecting underground pipes to the downspouts and daylighting them far from the foundation prevents a lot of water from ever coming in contact with the foundation. A little caution; water flow out of the pipe can cause erosion or even accidently flood your neighbor’s property. Use good judgement when deciding where the pipe will exit and consider using a pop-up emitter to help dissipate the outflow.

Create A Dry Stream

Sometimes you just have to go with the flow and the best solution is to just help what is happening naturally. Water always finds its path down a hill and along the way it can cause erosion and rutting. One of the best ways, and possibly most attractive, is to create a dry stream. A dry stream is created by using gravels, rocks and boulders to line the path that water follows. Occasionally some excavation is necessary to make this path more efficient. A dry stream is also an opportunity to introduce interesting plants into the landscape.
