We’re doing something just a tad different today and sharing a little life update with y’all.
These last several weeks have been a little crazy around here. Last month, every time I sat in front of the computer to write a post it seemed like suddenly life happened and took me away. This month, I am hoping to be back at it in full swing with little to no life complications 🙂
As we head into the later part of the year, I want to make sure the content we are bringing you is really valuable and helpful. We have some really exciting things in store this later Summer & early Fall. So, without any additional delay, I’ll jump into a few things that have been happening in our world these last few weeks. And, a few things you can expect to see soon!
A BIG FAMILY LOSS
Of all the the little life updates, this one is the hardest to share.
Right before our trip to Hawaii a few weeks back, I took our yorkie to stay with my mom (he loves what we call ‘grandma camp’), as he almost always does when we go on vacation. I dropped him off in Indianapolis on Sunday and we very suddenly had to put him to sleep Monday evening.
It was completely unexpected. I know most of these types of things are.
I felt completely heartbroken. We had been with each other for nearly 14 years and he’s the love of my life (aside from Shawn, of course). Losing him felt like losing a child. I felt a little lost. A little empty. A little like a piece of me had dies, too.
I realize he’s just a dog and maybe only dog lovers will fully understand what a loss such as this feels like. But, with every new day I feel a bit more like myself. I cherish the memories and the days he made every gloomy day bright.
I hope to meet you again in heaven, Gizmo! You are missed more than I can say in words.
MASTER BEDROOM RENOVATION
On a lighter, happier note, Shawn and I spent all weekend putting the finishing touches on our master bedroom renovation. It’s been some timing coming and the space looks so lovely! I am so happy with the way it turned out.
We updated the space with an accent wall in a gorgeous color thanks to Easy Care Paint from True Value, changed out all of the bedding, hung window fixtures and added some special decor elements. There will be a full blog post coming later this week with all the details!
WE’RE STARTING A PODCAST!
This is likely the most exciting life update I will be sharing with y’all! We are in the process of starting a podcast! YAY! A blogger girlfriend, Candace, and I have been hard at work these last several weeks working on the title, content we want to share (which we hope you will really enjoy!), a guest list, the branding and so much more!
Before we launch (ikely the beginning of September), we want to make sure we really have all of the details buttoned up. There is so much more to come as it relates to the podcast, but I am really excited about getting things off the ground.
She and I both are scared shitless to get this thing started, but that’s why I think we both know it’s right. We have both been challenging ourselves to step outside of our comfort zones personally and professionally these last 6 months or so. And the podcast just seems right, ya know?
We have almost 50+ podcast episodes planned so more to come!
If you have been following along with us on Instagram, you may know Shawn and I chose to go vegan a few month back after our trip to Bali. A big life update for us!
In the months leading up to Bali, Shawn and I were both struggling with some minor health issues. Shawn has historically always had issues with high blood pressure and cholesterol. And I had been struggling with tired regularly, I was challenged with skin issues and feeling generally more sluggish than usual.
Over the course of time in Bali, we both ate almost entirely a vegan diet (very common in Bali). On the trip, and immediately after, I felt an incredible amount of energy, the puffiness under my eyes went away almost entirely. I was sleeping really peacefully and for several hours throughout the night. In all, I felt amazing. Better than I had in over a year+.
Similarly, immediately upon our return home from Bali, Shawn had gone for his regular wellness check-up at the doctor and is blood pressure had fallen from the upper 190’s down to 130+. At that same time a close friend had recommend I read The China Study and watch the Forks Over Knives documentary (available on Netflix).
Almost overnight, I cleared out our refrigerator and started shopping strictly off a plant based lifestyle.
I thought it was going to be really difficult at first, but it was been truly enjoyable cooking with Shawn and feeling great at the same time.
If you have been considering a similar lifestyle change, we have some more exciting news! We have a TON of really incredible recipes coming your way every week for the next few months. Including, a full shopping list of all of our favorite plant based/vegan grocery items.
I promise you will be amazed at how good everything tastes!
The Afford Anything Podcast is one of my weekly favorites. Paula gives some really incredible financial advise – including investments and how she got to over 20+ rental properties before her mid 20’s.
The podcast was started by a fellow blogger and her husband, but I like that that topics are geared towards the business side of things. Examples include how and when to build a team, how to conduct a great interview, why it’s important to invest in your website, etc.
The Shrink Next Door
While I haven’t listened to this one just yet, I have heard amazing things! Have you listened just yet? Tell me all about it!
READY TO FALL FORWARD
Ok, so I realize Summer just started, but for one reason or another, I am really looking forward to Fall this year! I know, I know!
Hear me out though. There is something I am really craving about crisp Fall air, cozy sweaters and wine by the fire, apple picking, travel to a lodge that has me really in the spirit. I am sure I’ll be kicking myself for saying all of this out loud when it comes, but the change is season really sounds heartwarming at the moment.
What do you all have planned for the Fall? Can y’all believe the kids are going back to school in just a few weeks?
HAWAII & UPCOMING TRAVEL
So, this is likely going to be an unpopular life update, but I will share a really honest review of our recent trip to Hawaii.
Two weeks ago, Shawn and I traveled to Hawaii to celebrate his birthday. If you know Shawn and I well, you know one of our favorite adventures is skydiving together. Y’all, it really is SO much fun!
Ohau has been recognized as one of the most scenic place in the United States to skydive so I booked the trip without hesitation. The skydiving itself was incredible – a full post and review to come! However, I didn’t love Hawaii as a whole.
Don’t get me wrong, I feel incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to go with Shawn. It was really great to enjoy the alone time with him – and the scenery was incredible. It was a bit overpriced in my opinion and still felt very touristy.
Now, we did stay in Waikiki which many would say does not compare in any way to Maui and some of the other smaller islands. If I could do it again, though, I may have chosen a different trip.
Later this week, I will do a full review so you have all of the details. I have always prided myself on being really honest with you all regarding our reviews so I’ll be sure to share as many of the details that comprised my thoughts next week.
I am REALLY excited though about some upcoming trips this Summer and Fall …
Next week, Shawn, my parents and myself are headed out East to Asheville and the Biltmore Restates. It’s another road trips which I am very excited about! Not to mention, I hear The Biltmore is just a stunning place to stay! I cannot wait to take you along on the journey with us!
Be sure to also send us all your Asheville recommendations!
You guys, if I am being really honest with you all (and myself), I have really let myself get out of shape these last 2 months.
As painful as it is to admit this, I have gained almost 20 pounds in 12 months, I have stopped taking great care of my body, I have not been drinking enough water … and the list goes on.
You can see the impact of these decisions in my skin tone and overall appearance.
I have been kicking things into gear with Shawn and we have been heading to the guy several times a week – even when we were dreading going or overly tired from work.
Specifically, I have been doing some high interval training on the treadmill and weight training in between. It feels great! It’s slow progress, but getting back into running and committing to taking better care of ourselves is giving me all the feels!
Many of you that have been sharing your fitness and workout journeys on Stories has been so helpful! Keep it up! You’re pushing me too!
Do you enjoy these life update posts? I’d love for you to share your honest thoughts below or shoot me an email! XO
Who doesn’t need a cute pair of palm tree shorts for vacation?
Admittedly, I think I packed almost all palm prints for our last week’s trip to Hawaii. The vacation came at just the right time for Shawn and I both. The weather was stunning and so relaxing. We will have a full blog post rounding up our trip later this week. I am really looking forward to sharing the details of this trip with y’all.
Before then, today, I’m equally excited to share with you all some of my favorite palm tree shorts and other prints perfect for the remainder of this summer.
The pieces below are really affordable, as well. Specifically, y’all need these cute palm tree shorts. The are now on sale and so comfortable. They are made of a silk-like material making them really cooling in the hot Hawaiian temperatures.
And, who can resist the bold colors and floral pattern? The tie waist is also a really fun details that draws your waistline in wonderfully.
Below are more than 15 of my favorite palm tree or palm print pieces. These pieces are adorable for either a layering piece at the office or a cute casual look for the beach. Which piece is your favorite?

TRAVEL TO BALI & LUGGAGE
You cannot purchase a one-way ticket to Bali. When you check in at the airport, they will ask for proof of your return ticket.
Also, you can book a trip to Bali for an extended stay without a Visa, but that is typically limited to 30 days. If you stay longer than 29 days, you can get slapped with a pretty hefty fine and it can make it difficult to get approved for your Visa at a later time.
I have heard there are some ways to get around this rule, such as leaving the island for 24-48 hours and returning. That can be a bit of a pain and could be costly.
As for luggage, be sure to check with your airline for the specifics surrounding carry-on and luggage rules. Shawn and I were somewhat shocked to learn we were only allowed one carry-on regardless of personal item like we experience here in the states. This was a little bit of a pain for us since we then had to spend time packing items from each of our second carry-on’s in our checked luggage. We also had to pay more for each checked bag as each bag was then overweight.
From Chicago, the flight was roughly 25 hours both ways. We had one stop on our way there and two stops on our way home. I almost preferred the two separate slights as it broke up the long flights and gave us the opportunity to walk more frequently.
Also, because Shawn and I had been sitting for such a long period of time on our flights there, our legs were VERY swollen when we arrived in Bali. Because of that, we moved about the flights on our way home which significantly reduced the swelling on our return. I highly recommend moving your legs often if you can.
Shawn and I flew Quatar Airlines for all flights. The staff and flights were both better than I was expecting. They served food and beverages on multiple occasions throughout the flight along with free wifi and movies.
What Bali travel guide for first timers would be complete if we didn’t cover money while on the island? Travel around Bali is very different than we have experienced in other countries such as Mexico. Most stores, hotels and restaurants know what to do with US currency when it comes to cash on hand. As a result, you will want to convert your USD to Rupiah (IDR). Almost no establishment we visited took USD.
When exchanging your cash at a currency exchange, be sure to choose a reputable, private bank. At the recommendation of many, including locals at our hotels, we only chose banks that were behind glass doors and in some cases guarded. For almost all occasions, Shawn and I used a local bank called BHI. You can find them all over the island. They often had the highest conversation rates, as well
It was also recommended by many not to exchange currency at the airport in Bali as the exchange rates can be lower, fyi.
We followed the same rules when taking money from an ATM machine on the island. We only chose ATM’s that were in a larger local mall or behind glass doors. It was recommended to us to never take money from an ATM that is out in the open or on the streets. Prior to our trip, some travelers before us mentioned they had their debit or credit card details stolen from ATM’s on the streets.
Also, to avoid any complications using credit cards while traveling in Bali, be sure to call your banks and credit card companies beforehand to notify them of your travel.
TRAVEL AROUND THE ISLAND
There are a number of different ways to get around the island in Bali. However, based on my experience, the preferred method is by scooter. You will find scooters for rent almost everywhere in Bali. And, it’s my most preferred method simply because of the amount of traffic on the island. It’s terrible, y’all.
While scooters are my personal preferred method of transportation, below are the most common ways of getting around:
SCOOTERS – As I mentioned, scooters are the way to go when traveling around the island, in my opinion. If you’re not familiar with riding a scooter, there can be a slight learning curve so please be sure to wear a helmet and practice on a non-busy street before you venture out into heavy traffic areas.
As I mentioned, the traffic in Bali can be terrible and really packed. You will find the majority of local travelers are also on scooters so you will often be surrounded by multiple scooters on the road.
Also, scooter drivers follow very few rules of the road as we understand it here in the US. Scooter riders, including Shawn and I, drive between cars, on the sidewalks, on the opposite sides of the road, etc. They also drive very fast at times so, again, you will need to practice. I scrapped my knees multiple times on other cars as you will get that close to them.
The cost of a scooter when we were in Bali (February 2019) was about $6 a day. We stuck with one scooter for the entire trip so we knew it was reliable. You will be responsible for purchasing your own gas or Petrol for the scooter, as well. Petrol was also very inexpensive and about $2 to fill up the entire tank.
You can purchase Petrol for almost all street vendors. They will look like very small gas tanks (like at a BP or Shell gas station) you would see in the US. Some also sell Petrol out of old liquor or vodka bottles on the side of the road. We only purchased from local vendors as an FYI.
It’s also worth noting, Shawn and I drove our scooter all over the island. We drove it from Canguu as far south as Uluwatu (about 1.5 hours) and all the way north to Lempuyand (about 2 hours). While the ride got slightly uncomfortable because of the vibration at the 2 hour mark, I was so glad we were on a scooter to see all of the amazing sites along the way. I would not have chosen it any other way.
GO-JEK – Go-Jek is the Uber of Bali. Uber was previously an option in Bali, as well, but no longer. There are a number of people who take Go-Jek regularly, but warning, you will wait in traffic so the cost could be high. Go-Jek has a tracking service AND they deliver food, as well.
BLUEBIRD TAXI – If you are looking to use a taxi service on the side of the road, many recommend Bluebird Taxi services. It’s one of the more common, reputable taxi services in all of Bali.
TIP: If you are going to use a taxi service over other modes of getting around, it’s recommended to ask the taxi driver to use the meter button. Otherwise, the taxi driver can charge you any fair they might like. You may experience some resistance at first, but typically if you tell the driver you won’t ride without the meter, they will agree.
Continuing with Bali travel guide for first timers, let’s chat about the food!
The local food in Bali is absolutely amazing! There are fewer places Shawn and I have been where the local food has been so divine. There are a ton of different places to eat with a variety of different cuisines, but I highly recommend trying the local dishes specific to Bali. To help you with some verbiage, here’s a quick glossary of common terms:
WARUNGS – Warungs are the local food shops or street vendors. You can eat at a local Warung for as little a $.75 for an entire meal. Sounds concerning? Don’t be! All of the food is likely locally sourced and very delicious. There are single families simply cooking for the locals. Try it!
TIP: When eating at a local Warung or street food vendor, I highly recommend choosing one that appears busy.
They often leave the food out for several hours during the day. As a result, you want to be sure the food is being made fresh and often throughout the day. There is something called ‘Bali Belly’ which can make you sick for a day or two+. Shawn and I were in Bali for almost 10 days and did not experience any issues. So long as you are careful to choose a busy vendor, you should be fine.
NASI GORENG – Nasi Goreng is one of Bali’s more popular dishes and stands for fried rice and chicken. And, y’all, it’s incredibly delicious!
NASI CAMPUR – If you are not interested in getting fried rice, you can choose nasi campur which is white rice.
BINTANG – Looking for a beverage local to Bali? Look no further than the Bintang. Bintang is local beer served in Bali which I would compare in taste to a Miller Lite or Budweiser.
It does get very hot in Bali so be sure to drive a lot of water. However, do not drink any of the tap water. Be sure you are buying bottled water instead.
Similarly, if you are eating at a local Warung, be sure to also stay away from lettuce when possible. Often times local vendors will wash their salads with tap water which can be..
If you have been searching for a Jamaica luxury resorts and coming up short, look no further than the Hillside House Jamaica.
This incredible house, overlooking a ten-mile stretch of the Carribean Sea, is one of the more spectacular stays Shawn and I have had the chance of enjoying. Family owned for almost 60 years, the Hillside House has been a destination of choice for high-end guests for decades. I can certainly see why it is consider one of the best Jamaica luxury resorts.
In today’s post, we will detail our experience, all of the incredible accommodations, the staff (including a butler and a chef!) and so much more! This is a post you will not want to miss!
THE HILLSIDE HOUSE EXPERIENCE
Want to know why the Hillside House is considered one Jamaica’s best luxury resorts? Just look at this incredible view!
When you arrive at the Hillside House, you are greeted by the full staff, including butler and chef, that are on-site. The staff is there to assist you with every need you and your guests may have during your stay. You will get a full tour of the house and grounds, as well as a walk through of your meal plan with Natalie, the on-site chef.
TIP: Be sure to be clear about what your party will and will not eat – including any allergies. You will also want to establish the times you want to eat breakfast, lunch and or dinner as they staff will prepare for the day in advance.
The wide open Great Room opens to a lavish veranda overlooking the ocean. At night the lights of Montego Bay across the water welcome guests of the Hillside House to stay out together, sharing drinks, laughter, and memories before retiring to their suites.
During our stay at the Hillside house, we enjoyed exquisite Jamaican meals which rival the finest restaurants on the island. Although the are is extremely safe, there is a security guard on the premises each night, allowing us to to feel completely at ease.
FOOD & BEVERAGE
The food and beverages consumed at Hillside House are an additional cost. Generally speaking, the average cost for three meals a day is approximately $35 per person per day. This generally does not cover the cost of alcoholic beverages which can also be ordered as part of the food plan.
Jamaican food is fresh and colorful, and the Hillside cook is truly outstanding. As mentioned above, upon arrival, Natalie will confirm with you about meal options and prepare a shopping list tailored to your family’s preference. She will purchase the food at a local marker and bring you the receipt.
Dining at the Round Hill Resort is also an option for breakfast, lunch and dinner which Shawn and I did choose to do a few times during our stay. This can be a great way to linger down at the beach, by the infinity pool or on the magnificent patio overlooking the bay.
The food costs need to be paid to the Chef, Natalie, in cash, as follows:
* An initial installment for food costs are paid in the first couple of days of your stay (in $US). And, the balance of food costs will be collected at the end of your stay. Depending on your needs, she may or may not need to collect a payment mid-week.
* Because she shops in the open market in Montego Bay with vendors she’s been buying from for years, she consistently gets the very best prices on fresh fish, meat, produce and fruit. In this way the cost and quality of cooking at Hillside is much less expensive than dining out.
* In addition to the cost advantages for meals at Hillside, the dining service is attentive, professional and friendly. This makes for a luxury restaurant experience in the relaxed environs of beautiful Hillside House.

In the morning, be sure to catch the incredible sunrise! You will not want to miss it!
Now, more than ever before, it’s really important to me that the pieces I purchase are really versatile and wearable for multiple occasions. Today, I am excited to share with you all 25 chic jumpsuits for work that are also just as playful and stylish for the weekend and other events.
While many of these are perfect for Summer and early Fall, several are sleeveless. Here are a few tips I use to ensure my shoulders are covered on days I need to be a bit more formal at the office:
ADD A BLAZER OR DENIM JACKET
If you don’t care to bare your shoulders at the office, but still want to style a chic jumpsuit for work, I always recommend a great blazer or denim jacket. A blazer is a great way to tie the look together more formally. However, a denim jacket is a great way to elevate the look, but on a more casual basis. I carefully choose a number of the jumpsuits below I knew would look killer with both.
Then, take off the jacket for a quick way to transition your look from work to happy hour at your favorite rooftop!
LAYER WITH A CUTE TEE OR LONG SLEEVE BUTTON DOWN TOP
Not interested in adding a blazer or denim jacket, but still want to cover your shoulders? Layer the sleeveless jumpsuit with a cute tee or long sleeve blouse. The same rule applies to this look, as well. With a quick change in the restroom at the close of your work day, simply take off the layered tee or blouse and you’re all set for date night!
Also, if you’re shopping any of the jumpsuits below, remember they often come in multiple colors and many are also available in petites and tall.
Every single month I fall more and more in love with Anthropologie clothing and new arrivals.
I’ll be honest, I haven’t always been loyal fan. For months and months I couldn’t seem to find styles I was in love with a much as y’all. Or, I would find a dress I fell in love with only to find the one look was $400+.
These last several months though, I’ve been in love. I now find myself getting really excited with every new arrival announcement. How about y’all?
Anthropologie just launched 1000+ new arrivals and there are giving me all the Spring feels. Below are more than 30+ of my picks from the launch. Everything from gorgeous tops for date night, killer Spring dresses and amazing accessories to complete your look. I hope you love these styles as much as me!
One of my favorite pieces has to be this lovely lavender chiffon dress. I purchased it before we headed out to Jamaica this past month. The floral pattern and vibrant colors make this the perfect dress for your Spring wardrobe.
Headed to a bridal or baby shower? Get your hands on this dress! You’ll be the talk of the party, I can almost guarantee it.

Anyone else loving the short suit sets trend as much as me? Both of our hands up here!
I have always been a huge fan of the short suit sets. I styled a similar look several years back and still love the look to this day.
So, when I heard the short suit trend was one of the more popular themes this Spring and Summer, I was thrilled.
Here’s what’s really great about this set – the individual pieces can be worn in so many different ways this Spring, Summer and early Fall.
WHY WE LOVE SHORT SUIT SETS:
Let’s start with this blazer. Here are my favorite ways to wear it this season:
For the office, the blazer looks amazing with a white silk cami, classic black trousers and a killer pair of black heels or sandals. If you work in a more conservative office, I’d also recommend a sleeveless white button down top.
While I love this blazer paired with these matching shorts (they fit amazing!), I also love them with an adorable pair of black silk or linen shorts, as well.
Looking for a more casual look, throw this blazer on with skinny or straight leg jeans, a classic graphic tee and this blazer. Such a fun look for a night out!
The list could go on and on. There are endless ways to style these pieces this Summer – and for so many different occasions. While the sale lasts, I highly recommend picking up these pieces. You will likely not regret this purchase!
Both of these pieces look fantastic with mixed prints, as well. One of my favorite pairings? A blue and white striped button down.
Also, or reference, I purchased a size 0 in the shorts and a 2 petite in the jacket. The shorts themselves have a more loose fit around the legs which makes them very flattering.
Today, I am sharing 20 short suit sets that will help you kill this trend this Summer! See 20 of my favorites below. Also, several are no on sale!
