What is a cleanse and why would anyone need to do one? Cleanse Myths:
1. Toxins are not real. This is a big myth. There are so many different toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Pollution, pesticides, medications, plastics, body lotions, antibiotics, herbicides, artificial chemicals, food dyes, and processed foods, just to name a few. As these toxins slowly build up in the body, they get deposited into your fat cells which makes it extremely difficult for you to excrete them. Once your cells are somewhat compromised, they may stop working as efficiently as they should. What can happen? Weight gain, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, aches and pains, low energy and more. Getting rid of toxins can do wonderful things for your health.
2. Our bodes are designed to handle anything we throw at them. Yes, we do have wonderful detoxifying organs such as the liver and the kidneys. We have a wonderfully efficient lymphatic system. Our skin does a great job at sweating. However, since most people are micronutrient deficient, these organs don’t receive the nutrients required for optimal function - especially when you consider how many toxins you are exposed to. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, “Oxidative stress is the total burden placed on organisms by the constant production of free radicals in the normal course of metabolism plus whatever other pressures the environment brings to bear (natural and artificial radiation, toxins in air, food and water; and miscellaneous sources of oxidizing activity, such as tobacco smoke).” Oxidative stress can lead to free radicals which can then lead to damaged cells. That can bring disease and illness.
3. We excrete whatever we don’t need. The body doesn’t allow toxins to circulate freely because it would create negative health reactions. So, therefore, the toxins are stored in fat cells to keep them “out of the way.” Once they are stored in fat cells, they must be transformed into a different form so that they can be properly excreted. You may have heard that people must drink a lot of water when they are doing a cleanse and that is absolutely true. Once those toxins are released from the fat cells, they must be eliminated quickly. If not, you can experience negative side effects such as nausea, headache or rash. Not to worry, drinking water and eating lots of fiber is usually the best way to prevent that from happening.

The Stomach Bug. Few things inspire more fear than hearing that the Stomach Bug is going around. And it is. The good news is that there are many things you can do to try to prevent your family from catching it. They are all easy, inexpensive and doable. And, they can all be implemented into your lifestyle on a permanent basis so that you are always ahead of the game and not simply waiting for viruses or bacteria to strike! So, what do to? 1. First, start with something that is so easy yet most people don't do. WASH YOUR HANDS AS SOON AS YOU GET HOME. Yes, right after you take off your shoes, (that is also another way to prevent illness) go directly to the sink, lather up with lots of soap and warm water, and scrub those hands. Make sure the rest of your family does the same. 2. Drink a lot of water. It's really important to keep yourself hydrated all the time - it helps to maintain healthy cells and provides a positive environment so that your organs can work effectively. 3. Incorporate foods that strengthen your immune system into your diet. Key foods include garlic, onions, turmeric, ginger, cruciferous vegetables, mushrooms, dark leafy greens, berries, citrus fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, beans and whole grains. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, “Oxidative stress is the total burden placed on organisms by the constant production of free radicals in the normal course of metabolism plus whatever other pressures the environment brings to bear (natural and artificial radiation, toxins in air, food and water; and miscellaneous sources of oxidizing activity, such as tobacco smoke).” Oxidative stress can lead to free radicals which can then lead to damaged cells. That can bring disease and illness.
3. We excrete whatever we don’t need. The body doesn’t allow toxins to circulate freely because it would create negative health reactions. So, therefore, the toxins are stored in fat cells to keep them “out of the way.” Once they are stored in fat cells, they must be transformed into a different form so that they can be properly excreted. You may have heard that people must drink a lot of water when they are doing a cleanse and that is absolutely true. Once those toxins are released from the fat cells, they must be eliminated quickly. If not, you can experience negative side effects such as nausea, headache or rash. Not to worry, drinking water and eating lots of fiber is usually the best way to prevent that from happening.
This is why I like to host a Spring Cleanse every year! Winter is a time for storage - our bodies try to stay warm, we are drawn to heartier foods (think beef stew, roasted chicken) and less movement. Once it starts to get warmer, we search out greens (there is a reason fresh spinach is so prominent in March and April!) and try to get outside more. Spring is a natural time to engage in a cleanse - start to rid the body of stored toxins, ditch harmful habits and cravings, and focus on a healthier lifestyle.
