In the last two years, there has been fierce competition between banks to earn your business with their rewards-card products. As a result, we’ve seen a huge increase in the number of cards that offer additional points for purchases you make with specific types of merchants. These spending categories can mean a lot of extra points if you have the right strategy, but for some, it only makes earning rewards more complicated. In today’s episode, we’ll cover the top cards for spending on Travel, Dining & Restaurants, Groceries & Supermarkets, and Gas & Fuel.

I just wanted to reach out to let you know that we just got word that the 200,000 point welcome bonus for the Spark Miles and Spark Cash small business cards are ending early in the day Monday, January 28th.

This is the biggest welcome bonus we’ve ever seen for a single card since we started tracking cards in 2013.

The major caveat, is that earning the 200,000 point bonus requires spending $50,000 in the first six months after opening your account.

Since the card earns 2 points on every dollar spent, you’ll end up with 300,000 total points if your reach the requirement for the bonus.

Southwest and Chase have teamed up for what may be one of the top offers of the year. Until now, it hasn’t been possible to get the Companion Pass with a single, personal rewards card. No need to apply for multiple cards, open a business card, or earn 110,000 points in a calendar year. This Companion Pass comes with the welcome bonus.

All three Southwest Personal cards, the Southwest Priority, Southwest Premier, and Southwest Plus are offering the Companion Pass plus 30,000 points after spending $4,000 in 90 days.

What is the Companion Pass

The Companion Pass is one of the best deals in domestic travel, entitling you to buy-one-get-one-free flights with Southwest on any route for as long as the pass is valid.

In other words, every time you book a Southwest fare, (either with cash or using Rapid Rewards points) you can bring your favorite travel companion along, and they only pay the taxes and fees—starting at $5.60 on U.S. flights.

This offer is only available until February 11, 2019, and the sooner you earn the companion pass, the sooner you’ll get two-for-one flights.

Until today, it was much harder to get this deal because it required getting both a business and a personal card, or generating a huge amount of spending on your credit card.

Signup for Just One Card and Get a Companion Pass

All three of the Southwest personal cards feature the same companion pass offer. Although it might be your first instinct to get the card with the lowest annual fee, the Southwest Priority card (with a $149 annual fee) should be the best value for most.

The reason is that this card easily provides more value than the sticker price. With the Southwest Priority Card, you’ll get:

  • A $75 Southwest airfare credit each year you hold the card
  • 7,500 Rapid Rewards points on your account anniversary
  • Four upgraded boarding per year
  • 20% back on in-flight purchases

Assuming you’ll easily use the $75 Southwest airfare credit (don’t get any of these cards if you won’t spend $75 with the airline every year), your effective annual fee is $74 ($149-75). Southwest points are worth about 1.6 cents each, so your 7,500 annual points credit should save you around $120 on flights.

Those two benefits pay for the card with about $45 in extra value. The EarlyBird Check-Ins are an added perk—worth $60-100 if you would normally buy them at $15-25 per flight.

Who is eligible for Southwest Cards?

In general, you are not eligible for this card if you have opened five or more personal credit cards in the last 24 months. You can learn more about the 5/24 rule here. Chase also added these restrictions earlier this year.

The product is not available to either (i) current Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards® Credit Card, or (ii) previous Cardmembers of any Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card who received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Cardmembers of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Business Card and Employee Credit Card products.

To summarize: You won’t be eligible if you have a personal Southwest card now or if you earned a bonus on one in the last two years.

Our Take

If you’re eligible to get this offer, you should give it some serious consideration. Southwest only serves destination in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. Hawaii is a strong possibility to launch in 2019, but those flights aren’t on sale yet.

The big win here is for folks that often travel with the same companion. Families of four or more could get even more value if both parents can pick up a card and add one of the kids as a companion.

Transferrable bank points are especially valuable because they provide multiple options for booking travel. The conventional wisdom is that you get the most value transferring to a frequent flyer program. But that isn’t always the right advice. Today, we explore how to make the right choice when you can redeem points towards the cost of a paid ticket or book an award through a frequent flyer program.
