I know I’m a little late to the party, but hey … at least I showed up!  One of the recent stars of Instagram is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Eyeshadow Palette.  Released last year, the Norvina Palette with its stunning shades and pretty purple packaging, has become a social media darling.  After seeing how beautiful the colors were in person, I decided to purchase it and put it to the test.  Is the Norvina Palette all hype?  And how does it perform on Over 40, mature eyes?  Let’s find out!

Shades & Packaging

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Palette was named after the president of the brand, Claudia Norvina Soare.  Claudia is the daughter of the company’s Founder, Anastasia Soare.  This palette comes packaged in a pretty purple velvet palette with a large mirror and includes a double-sided brush.  Believe it or not, the brush is actually pretty good.  Normally the brushes that come with makeup palettes … well, let’s just say they generally get tossed into the trash straight away!  This palette includes fourteen shades, seven mattes and seven metallics.  I have to say, the shades are absolutely gorgeous.  They are a mixture of warm and cool tones ranging from bold and bright to pretty pastels.

The Norvina palette includes the following Matte Shades: (Bottom Row in the photo below)

  • Base (Matte eggshell)
  • Soul (Matte wisteria)
  • Incense (Matte dusty terra-cotta)
  • Love (Matte mid-tone cool pink)
  • Volatile (Matte warm charcoal)
  • Eccentric (Matte dark burnt orange)
  • Passion (Matte deep garnet)

And the following Metallic Shades: (Top Row in the photo below)

  • Dreamer (Metallic pink champagne)
  • Summer (Foiled golden topaz)
  • Wild Child (Duo chrome frosty pink with a magenta shift)
  • Rose Gold (Metallic rosewood)
  • Celestial (Duo chrome plum with a violet shift)
  • Dazzling (Cool-tone bronze with a violet shift)
  • Drama (Duo chrome aubergine with a cool bronze shift)
The Norvina Palette contains 14 beautiful shades with 7 mattes (bottom row) and 7 metallic/shimmers (top row). Formula & Application

As someone with more mature eyes, I am thrilled to see that half of the shadows in this palette are matte!  As a general rule of thumb, I prefer to use matte shadows in and above the crease and shimmers on the eyelid and under the brow bone.  Although I don’t like rules for what we can and cannot wear in makeup over a certain age, let’s be honest…  Shimmer draws attention to and “highlights” the area that it’s placed. I don’t know about you, but I am not really into highlighting my crepey eyelids and hoods.

A darker matte shadow placed in the crease opens up mature eyes and makes them appear less hooded.  Shimmer on the lid, corners of the eye and under the brow bone brings the light and focus where it needs to be to make the eyes appear bigger, brighter and more youthful.

The formula of the eyeshadows in the Norvina Palette is creamy for the most part, although a few of the shimmer shades are not as creamy as the rest.  The matte shades apply effortlessly and blend out well using eyeshadow brushes.  The consistency and texture of the metallics and shimmers make using a brush a bit more difficult, I recommend using your fingers to apply them and blend as needed.

Be warned, these eyeshadows have A LOT of fallout!  Be sure to tap your brush off before applying and apply your eyeshadow before your foundation or hold something under your eyes to catch the fallout.

The shadows in the ABH Norvina Palette are highly pigmented.  A little goes a long way, especially with the metallics and shimmers.

Wear Test & Looks

I tried multiple combinations of the shadows from the Norvina Palette using a matte shade all over the lid and in the crease and shimmer/metallics in the inner corners of the eye, under the brow bone and the center of the lid. The color payout from the shadows is good, however, I did find that applying an eye primer first greatly increased the color intensity and wear time.  The wear time was around 6-8 hours without an eye primer.  Using my tried & true, Too Faced Shadow Insurance Eye Primer , the wear time was a good 8-10 hours.

Here are a few different looks you can create with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Palette along with the eyeshadow brushes I recommend using with this palette.

Eyeshadow Brushes that work well with this Palette:

It Cosmetics Airbrush All-Over Shadow Brush #119  (For applying shadow all over the Lid)

Sephora Collection Pro Featherweight Crease Brush #38 (For applying shadow in the Crease)

Dior Backstage Small Eyeshadow Blending Brush N22 (For applying shadow in the Outer Corner)

Sigma Beauty Tapered Blending Brush E40 (For all over Blending)

For a Pretty Lavender Look:

Base Soul Dreamer Celestial
  • Apply Base all over the lid.
  • Using a crease brush, apply Soul into the crease blending inwards from the outer corner.
  • Apply Dreamer to the inner corners of the eyes and under the brow bone.
  • Apply Celestial to the center of the lid, pressing in with fingers.
For a Bronze/Gold Look: Eccentric Passion Rosegold Dreamer
  • Apply Eccentric Just above the crease.
  • In the crease and outer corner, apply Passion.
  • Apply Rose Gold to the inner corner lid and center of the lid and a light coat on the outer corner.
  • Apply Dreamer to the inner corners of the eyes and under the brow bone.
For a Soft Neutral Look: Bare Love

First of all, let’s take a moment to send a huge kudos to Covergirl!  In November, 2018, Covergirl announced they were now 100% Cruelty-free, becoming the first Beauty Brand of its size to earn the Leaping Bunny Cruelty-free Seal.  This is a huge win for cruelty-free advocates and let’s hope that the other major beauty brands will follow suit.

Covergirl has had a lot of foundations over the years.  When I was in high school, I wore Covergirl Clean Makeup Liquid Foundation in the shade Creamy Natural.  That foundation has been around since the company was founded in 1961 and it’s still a favorite of scores of women today.  It’a funny, I can’t remember a thing I learned in Algebra in High School but I know exactly what makeup foundation, blush & lipstick I wore!  Priorities, right?

Now that we’ve got that bit of trivia out of the way, let’s move on to Covergirl’s newest foundation, TruBlend Matte Liquid Foundation.  I recently picked it up and have been testing it to see how performs on Over 40, mature, less than perfect skin. Let’s take a look!

The Claim

The claims on this foundation are pretty big!  According to Covergirl, TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is “a matte formula that isn’t drying or cakey. TruBlend Matte Made’s formula is developed with flexi-hold technology that creates a strong, yet flexible film on skin for durability and comfort, while the mattifying powders absorb oil and minimizes pores for a soft matte, flawless finish. Up to 12 hours of wear. 12 HR COMFORT MATTE PORE MINIMIZING OIL CONTROL TRANSFER RESISTANT ALL IN 40 SHADES”.

Formula & Packaging

Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is a liquid foundation that comes packaged in a glass jar with a pump.  The consistency is a creamy texture that is not too thick or too runny.  The formula is oil-free.

CoverGirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is a creamy, liquid formula that comes packaged in a glass jar with a pump. Ingredients

Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is a silicone based foundation with 3 of the first 10 ingredients being silicones.  This foundation does contain talc and fragrance (the fragrance is not heavy and quickly goes away after application).  While I personally do not have an issue with talc, there are some people who find it drying and have an issue with it clogging pores.  TruBlend Matte Made does not contain alcohol and unfortunately, there is no Spf protection in this foundation.

Shade Selection

TruBlend Matte Made Foundation’s shade selection is excellent for a drugstore brand with a broad range of 40 shades to choose from.  The shades are broken down by skin tone into four categories and coded as follows:  (L) Light, (M) Medium, (D) Deep and (T) Tan.  I picked this foundation up in the shade L20, Light Ivory and it’s a perfect match for my fair to light cool toned skin.

Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation is available in a whopping 40 shades ranging from Light to Deep and both warm, cool and neutral tones. Application & Coverage

TruBlend Matte Made Liquid Foundation is a creamy texture that blends well and melts into the skin.  I applied 1 pump using a blending sponge and true to the brand’s claim, this foundation dries to a flawless, matte finish.  1 pump provides light to medium coverage.  To build to full coverage, I would suggest using 2 pumps.  The foundation did a good job of evening out my skin tone, covering redness and it did not settle into fine lines, wrinkles or pores.

The Wear Test

On Day 1, I tested this foundation without a primer using a sunscreen (Bare Republic Mineral Face Lotion SPF 30) underneath.  I applied using the L’oreal Infallible Blend Artist Foundation Blender (pictured above).  The wear time was very good.  After 6 hours, the foundation looked good with no blotchiness or shine.  After 8 hours, there was some wearing off and redness around the nose but overall the coverage still looked good.  At 12 hours, coverage had worn off around the nose and chin and some redness was showing through.

On Day 2, I used the same sunscreen and added a Primer.  I used a new favorite, Milk Makeup Blur Stick Matte Primer and applied the Foundation using the same L’oreal Foundation Blender.  The foundation applied easily over the primer with a smooth finish and no settling into pores, fine lines or wrinkles.  At 8 hours, the coverage was looking great with no shine and no redness.  At 12 hours, some redness was showing through around the nose but overall it still looked pretty good and still no shine!

On a side note, Covergirl claims this foundation is “Transfer-proof”.  It is not.  It does transfer onto clothing and phone screens. That being said, I have never discovered a foundation that was transfer proof and I wish Brand’s would just stop making that claim.

Price

$11.49 USD for 1.0 oz.

Final Verdict

Overall, this foundation is very impressive.  Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation’s creamy texture blends well and dries to a flawless matte finish.  It doesn’t settle into pores, fine lines or wrinkles and has excellent wear time of up to 12 hours using a Primer underneath.  Let’s have a look at the Pros & Cons.

Pros:

  • Doesn’t settle into pores, fine lines or wrinkles
  • True to Covergirl’s claim of a matte finish
  • Stays matte throughout the day
  • Medium to Full Coverage covers redness and evens out skin tone
  • Wears well with or without a primer
  • Wears well under sunscreen
  • No drying alcohol in the ingredients
  • Affordable Price
  • Excellent Shade Range
  • Pump Dispenser

Cons:

  • Requires a Primer to achieve the Brand’s claim of 12 hour wear time
  • Is NOT transfer proof as the Brand Claims
  • Contains Talc which some find drying and irritating to the skin

I think this is an excellent foundation.  If you’re looking for an affordable, liquid foundation with a matte finish, light to full coverage with good wear time and no issues with fine lines, wrinkles or pores, this may be the one for you!  I would definitely put this in the Top 5 of drugstore foundations that I’ve tried.

I must admit, I was skeptical about buying this palette.  After all, Khloe Kardashian is just 34 years young and her BFF, Malika Haqq is just 35.  And I’m, well… let’s just say a few years beyond that.  But this year I vowed to be fearless and BECCA’s highlighters & blushes are normally perfection, even on mature skin so I decided to go for it.  That being said, I headed straight to Ulta and purchased the Bronze, Blush & Glow Palette from BECCA’s new BFF Collection with Khloe Kardashian & Malika Haqq the day it came out.

The Bronze, Blush & Glow Palettes are part of Becca’s collaboration with Khloe & Malika who are lifelong best friends.  There are two palettes available, one from Khloe for fair to medium skin tones.  The other from Malika for medium to dark skin tones.  I purchased the Made with Love by Khloe Palette for my light skin and I’ve been using it every day for the last couple of weeks.  Let’s dive right in to a bit more about this palette including whether or not it gets a thumbs up for Over 40, mature skin!

Lifelong best friends Khloe Kardashian & Malika Haqq collaborated with BECCA Cosmetics to create the BFF Collection which includes the Bronze, Blush & Glow Palettes. What is It? Packaging & Shades

The palettes are both full faced palettes that include a highlighter, two blushes and a bronzer.  Can we just take a moment to appreciate how beautiful the packaging of these palettes are?  The gorgeous gold case (Khloe’s Palette is gold, Malika’s is silver) is pretty enough to leave on the vanity and the little heart on the front of the palette that reads #BECCABFFS is just adorable!

The palettes are described as “An easy to use, all-in-one face palette. The sheer, buildable shades are infused with light technology to softly scatter and reflect light to smooth the look of skin and create a natural, lit-from-within glow. Everything you need to bronze, blush and glow!”

The Made with Love by Khloe Palette includes:

  • Soft Matte Bronzer in Koko Bronze – a neutral medium tan.
  • Soft Focus Highlighter in Glow Up – a warm creamy, vanilla.
  • Radiant Blush in Fierce – a warm peach.
  • Radiant Blush in Fabulosity – a cool pink.

Made with Love be Malika Palette includes:

  • Soft Matte Bronzer in Bestie Bronze – a warm tan.
  • Soft Focus Highlighter in Dusted – a peachy pink.
  • Radiant Blush in Make Me Blush – a golden rose.
  • Radiant Blush in Yes Girl! – a warm, vibrant coral.
The packaging of the Bronze, Blush & Glow Palette is so pretty! How cute is the little heart in the center that reads #BECCABFFS ? Formula & Application

The formula of the Khloe & Malika Bronze, Blush & Glow Palette was designed using light diffusing pigments and light reflecting pearl to create a lit from within glow.  The satin matte bronzer contains blurring pigments to smooth the complexion.  Both palettes are paraben free.

The powders of the bronzer, blush and highlighter are quite creamy and blend effortlessly to a flawless finish.  The Bronzer is a satin matte finish that can be used for contouring the cheeks, forehead and jaw line or used all over the face.  The color is perfect, a light tan with no streaking.

Both Blushes are sheer with a radiant finish.  One is a warm peach and the other a cool pink.  I’ve been blending the two together and the result is a beautiful pinky-peach shade.  Apply the blush to the applies of your cheeks and blend upwards.  A couple of swipes provides a sheer pop of color and a fresh-faced radiant glow.  The formula is buildable for those who prefer more color.

The Highlighter in this palette is true to what you would expect from BECCA Cosmetics who are known for their gorgeous highlighters.  This is not an “in your face” highlighter but it does provide a smooth, soft, natural looking glow.  Apply the highlighter to the cheekbones, under the brows and down the bridge of the nose for a glowy lit from within look.

I experienced no settling into fine lines or wrinkles with any of the products in this palette and the wear time was quite good at around 6-8 hours.

The formula of the powder in the Khloe Made With Love Palette is creamy and blends like a dream! Final Take

Overall, I really love this palette.  The shades are gorgeous and the bronzer, blush & highlighter are blendable and buildable with no streaking or blotchiness.  I think this is one of those rare formulas that works for any age – whether you’re 21 or 65 or somewhere in between!  Not only is the packaging pretty but functional as well.  This would be a good palette to travel with as it is lightweight and includes everything you need for your face.  I’ve even used this on my eyes.  A swipe of the highlighter across the lid and a bit of the bronzer in the crease is all you need to wake up your eyes (well maybe a swipe of mascara too!).  I have a feeling I’ll be using this palette a lot this winter and spring!

Can you believe this is my first Beauty Empties Post?  After 20 months of Blogging, I figured it was about time to take a trip through my trash and have a look at the makeup and skincare products I used up this month and whether or not I will be repurchasing them.  So here we go, let’s have a look at these eight products that make up this month’s Empties!

Thayers Alcohol-Free Cucumber Witch Hazel Toner

This product is a staple in my nightly skincare routine.  I use Thayers Alcohol-Free Cucumber Witch Hazel Toner right after cleansing before applying the rest of my skincare serums, lotions & potions!  This all natural toner’s main ingredient is Witch Hazel, a natural astringent that reduces inflammation and decreases oil and redness in the skin.  Other notable ingredients are Aloe Vera Juice, Cucumber Extract and Glycerin which work together to sooth the skin by reducing puffiness and irritation, diminish clogged pores and help retain moisture.

If you’re looking for an affordable, all natural toner, this is a great option.  I have already repurchased this and always have one of these on hand! In addition to the Cucumber Formula, this is available in Lavender, Rose Petal and Unscented.

Price:  $7.00 – $10.00 USD

Repurchase: YES

Beauty Empties From Back Left: Thayers Cucumber Witch Hazel Toner, Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Pore-Refining Treatment with 2% BHA, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45, La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra-Light Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50, Bare Minerals Original Foundation, Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM, NARS – Radiant Creamy Concealer, Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist. Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Pore-Refining Treatment with 2% BHA

This liquid solution from Paula’s Choice Resist Daily Pore-Refining Treatment with 2% BHA contains 2% BHA (Beta hydroxy Acid).  It works to improve the visible signs of aging, unclog pores and diminish their appearance and smooth the skin’s surface.  I purchased this because I was looking to incorporate an alpha or beta hydroxy acid (AHA/BHA) into my skincare routine.  AHA’s are recommended for people with normal to dry skin and BHA’s are better for people with normal to oily or combination skin.

While this was a good product that caused little to no irritation, I probably will not be repurchasing it.  I have since found an AHA product that I love and use once per week.  Drunk Elephant’s Sukari Babyfacial has become a Holy Grail for me. It’s a once per week treatment that you leave on for 20 minutes and it leaves your skin glowing!

Price: $33.00 USD

Repurchase: NO

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45

I am a big believer in sunscreen.  I use it every single day on my face and every part of my body that is exposed.  This ultra sheer formula for the body from Neutrogena is lightweight and non-greasy and won’t irritate sensitive skin.  While I liked it a lot, I have found one that I like better and will probably not repurchase this right now.

If you’re curious, Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance Lotion SPF30 is the one I am currently obsessed with.  I love the sheer, lightweight formula.  It leaves a subtle glow on the skin and smells amazing!

Price: $8.99 USD

Repurchase: NO

La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra-Light Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50

This all mineral sunscreen for the face is a bit pricey but so worth it!  It’s non-greasy, doesn’t irritate sensitive skin or eyes and wears well both under makeup or on its own.  La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Ultra-Light Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50 is oil free, paraben free and fragrance free.  It is water resistant up to 40 minutes.  I always have a bottle of this close by!

Price: $33.50 USD

Repurchase: YES

Bare Minerals Original Foundation

I’ve been using this mineral foundation from Bare Minerals for over 20 years.  While I have tried other mineral foundations, nothing compares to this.  I don’t wear this every day but it is my go to foundation for days around the house or casual days out and about.  It’s lightweight, blends like a dream and doesn’t contain any junk!  If you’re looking for a foundation that is good for your skin, provides light to medium coverage, covers redness and imperfections and blends flawlessly, this is it.  I will continue to repurchase this unless something else comes along to knock it off the throne!  The shade selection is not bad either, with over 30 shades.  I wear fairly light and love the original formula.  There is also a matte formula available for those with oily skin.

Price: $29.00 USD

Repurchase: YES

Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM

This formula from Peter Thomas Roth contains Retinol at 1.5% and is infused with Vitamins C & E.  It helps to gently exfoliate the skin with a continuous burst of retinol all night long.  It addresses the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin tone and texture.  Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM is oil free and fragrance free.

I generally include a retinol product in my nightly skincare routine.  This is a good one for anyone with sensitive skin and I love the consistency of this serum.  It almost feels like an oil and it sinks right into the skin with no residue left behind.  I’m not repurchasing this right now because I’m currently testing some other retinol products.  However, I definitely see another bottle of this one in my future!

Price: $65.00 USD

Repurchase: YES

4 favorites from my Beauty Empties that I will be repurchasing! NARS – Radiant Creamy Concealer

Beauty gurus, beauty bloggers and celebrities love this concealer.  According to NARS, the Radiant Creamy Concealer “instantly blurs any dark circles or imperfections that your foundation doesn’t fully catch.  Enriched with moisturizing Vitamin E, this lightweight formula hydrates on contact and helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines with a single stroke.”

For me, this concealer was a bit too luminous.  I actually felt that is enhanced fine lines.  Perhaps it works wonders on younger skin, but not so much on over 40, mature skin.

Price: $30.00 USD

Repurchase: NO

NARS – Radiant Creamy Concealer

This multi-tasking Skin Mist from Tatcha is one of my absolute favorites.  You can see my full review of this product HereTatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist can be used as a Primer, to set your makeup, to refresh throughout the day, as a moisturizer… this list goes on.  With Squalane, Red Algae and Tatcha’s anti-aging HADASEI-3 Complex, this milky liquid spray gives the perfect glow.  Just one spritz on each side of your face and you’ll be looking like a Kardashian in no time! By the way, this is a favorite of Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and numerous other celebrities!

The only negative on this product is the price.  It is quite expensive at $48.00 for 1.35 oz.  However, there is a smaller bottle available for $20.00 and the large bottle lasts several months with daily use.  This is worth the splurge if your budget allows!

Price: $48.00 USD 1.35 oz bottle.  $20.00 0.4 oz bottle

Repurchase: YES

And that’s a wrap for this month’s Beauty Empties!  Have you tried any of these products?  What products have you used up recently?  I would love to hear what products you are using.  Let me know in the comments.  As always, I appreciate you stopping by and reading!

You’ve had one of the moments where you think to yourself, “Why didn’t I think of that?”, Right?  This is one of those moments!  Say hello to LBK Nail Lacquer Polish and their patented flip-up cap that lets you test the nail polish color against your skin tone!  The special flip-up cap looks like a nail tip.  It is painted with the actual nail lacquer so that you get a true color swatch.  Simply flip-up the nail and slide your finger underneath to see how the color will look against your skin tone.  Brilliant!

Who else is thinking… YAY!  No more sneaking a swipe of the nail polish on the store display & hoping nobody saw you doing it?? OMG Why didn’t I think of that? The patented flip-up cap from LBK Nails is brilliant!

LBK Nail Lacquers comes in 46 beautiful shades and 4 brand new shades that have just been released as part of their Holiday Collection.  There is also a topcoat and basecoat.  I recently had the opportunity to try 4 shades from LBK, Sweet Carolyn, a true blue red, Danyelle’s Desire, a beautiful hot bubble gum pink, Nancy So Fancy, an eye-catching pink and Kylie, a soft french pink.  There’s an interesting story behind the names of the polishes.  More on that in a minute.

But first, a bit about the brand, the polishes and how they perform.

LBK Nail Lacquers are 7 Free.  If you’re not familiar with the term, you’re going to love it.  7 free means that the polishes are made without 7 potentially harmful chemicals quite often found in nail polish.  LBK Nail Lacquers are all made without Toluene, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, TPHP and Xylene.  The brand is also 100% vegan and cruelty-free.

How beautiful are these shades?  From Left to Right: Sweet Carolyn, Danyelle’s Desire, Nancy So Fancy and Kylie.  LBK Nail Lacquers are 7 free, 100% Vegan and Cruelty-free!

All of the Nail Lacquers are packaged in a glass bottle with a standard brush.  The formula is highly pigmented, easy to apply and dries quickly to a beautiful gel like finish. The polish wore well with no streaking and I found the coverage lasted a good 7-10 days.

If gorgeous shades, the unique flip-up cap, a 7 free, vegan and cruelty free brand aren’t enough reasons to love this polish, here’s another!

The letters LBK in the brand’s name stand for Love by Kemeny, named after the brand’s owner.  He chose the name because of his love for people and wanted it to represent hope and to remind consumers that the company’s bottom line is making customers happy.

There is special meaning behind the names of the nail lacquer shades as well.  They are all named after inspirational women in the owner’s life.  Many of the names reflect hardships that women have overcome.  For example, the shade Daniella’s Resolve (a beautiful baby blue pastel) is based on losing a child to SIDS and being able to overcome it and help other women in their struggle.

I love this.  It’s a rare find in the beauty industry.

LBK Nail Lacquers retail for $9.50 for 0.45 oz.

To see the beautiful selection of shades and to purchase LBK Nail Lacquers, visit their website at LBKNails.com

Disclosure: “I received this product for free from LBK Nail Lacquers.  Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the company.”

Have you tried LBK Nail Lacquers?  What’s your favorite nail polish shade?  As always, I’d love to hear from you.  Please leave your comments below.  As always, I thank you for stopping by and reading and really appreciate your time!

Matte Foundations are front and center and on trend right now.  Nearly all of the major beauty brands have included a matte formula foundation in their collections.  They all look and sound fabulous but let’s face it, the models wearing them are normally twenty something with perfect skin!  I recently picked up No.7 Beautifully Matte Foundation and put it to the test to see how it would perform on Over 40, less than perfect mature skin.

Ready for the results?  Let’s take a look.

The Claim

No7 describes their Beautifully Matte Foundation as “all day velvet matte perfection with a lightweight feel.

“Achieve the appearance of flawless matte skin with a velvety soft finish and no powdery flatness.   Oil free, this unique foundation containing fine oil-absorbing powders, minimizes the need for touch ups by controlling shine all day long.  Developed to glide effortlessly onto the skin and instantly transform the appearance of your complexion.  Blemishes and flaws are concealed and pores appear minimized, leaving you with even-toned skin that looks perfectly smooth and velvety soft all day.”

Formula & Packaging

No7Beautifully Matte Foundation is a liquid foundation that comes packaged in a glass jar with a pump.  Although it is considered a liquid, the texture is not thin and runny but rather a thicker gel-like consistency.  The formula is oil free, hypoallergenic and includes an SPF15.

No7 Beautifully Matte Foundation comes packaged in a glass jar with a pump and is available in 14 Shades. Ingredients

No7 Beautifully Matte is a silicone based Foundation with several of the top 10 ingredients being silicones (Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane & Phenyl trimethicone).  Other notable ingredients rounding out the top 10 are Water, Glycerin, Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate & Titanium dioxide (active sunscreen ingredients) and Alcohol Denat.

Alcohol Denat is considered one of the “bad” alcohols.  It can cause dryness, skin irritation and breakouts.  I try to avoid it as much as possible because generally, on Over 40, mature skin,  we want to avoid ingredients that are drying. If it is way down on the ingredient list (beyond #7 is the general rule of thumb), then it probably isn’t a high enough percentage to have any effect on the skin.  Unfortunately, it is #4 on the list in No7’s Beautifully Matte Foundation.  This is a con for me right off the bat.

On a more positive note, all of the products in No7’s line are cruelty free which I always appreciate!

Shade Selection

Beautifully Matte Foundation is available in 14 Shades ranging from the lightest shade, Cool Ivory to the deepest called Chestnut.  Shades are broken down into five categories – Light, Medium, Deep/Tan, Tan and Deep.  I purchased this foundation in the shade Cool Ivory and it is a perfect match for my fair to light skin tone.

No7 Beautifully Matte Foundation is silicone based with 3 of the top 10 ingredients being silicones. Application & Coverage

I started with 2 pumps of No7 Beautifully Matte Foundation which I applied with a BeautyBlender sponge.  The foundation is a velvety texture and blends very well.  2 pumps gave me light to medium coverage.  It covered most of my redness and did a good job of evening out my skin tone.  True to its claim, it quickly dries to a matte finish and didn’t settle into pores or fine lines and wrinkles.  To bring this foundation up to full coverage, you would need 3-4 pumps.

No7 recommends dotting the foundation onto your face and then blending into the skin with a foundation brush.  I tried applying with a foundation brush, beauty blender sponge and my fingers.  The BeautyBlender sponge worked the best for an even, smooth finish.

The Wear Test

I tested this foundation on two days, one day without a primer and the second day with a primer.  I used my go to Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector SPF50 Sunscreen on both days and applied the foundation using a BeautyBlender sponge.

On the first day, I applied sunscreen and NO primer.  Since this foundation does dry to a matte finish, I did not use a setting powder over top.  The wear time was about 6 Hours before I started noticing it was becoming a bit patchy on my nose and chin.  At 6 Hours, it was also starting to appear a little shiny in the t-zone areas.  There was no settling into pores or fine lines on most of the face.  By the end of the day (around 12 hours of wear time), the coverage had worn off on my nose and chin.  It was patchy in several areas of the face and still shiny in the t-zone.

On Day 2, I applied sunscreen and a primer.  I used Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer the Original which works well with this foundation as they are both silicone based.  Using the Primer provided a very smooth finish with no cakiness and no settling into fine lines or wrinkles on most of the face.  I applied a light dusting of setting powder to my t-zone to see if it would eliminate the mid-day shine.  I used Cover Fx Perfect Setting Powder in Light which has become one of my new favorites!

After 6 hours, the Foundation was looking good with no settling into lines or wrinkles, no visible pores and little to no shine.  Apparently the primer & setting powder made a difference!  After 12 hours, it had worn off on my nose with some redness showing but everywhere else still looked good.

TIP:  On both days, I noticed a small amount of settling into fine lines under the eyes.   I would recommend using this foundation sparingly in the area around and underneath your eyes to avoid it looking dry or cakey.  If you need additional coverage in this area, use a concealer or brightener.

Price

$17.99 USD for 1 oz.

Final Verdict

Overall, this is an above average foundation with a good shade range for a drugstore foundation.  It is lightweight, blends easily and provides light to medium coverage.  It dries to a matte finish and doesn’t settle into pores, lines or wrinkles.  Let’s have a look at the Pros & Cons!

Pros:
  • True to the Brand’s claim of a Matte Finish
  • Does not settle into fine lines or wrinkles on most of the face
  • Provides smooth coverage that evens out skin tone and covers redness
  • Shade range is pretty good for a drugstore foundation
  • Includes an SPF15
  • Wears well over sunscreen
  • Wears well with other products
  • Pump bottle packaging
  • Price is affordable
Cons:
  • Requires a Primer to achieve 12 hour wear time
  • Alcohol Denat high on ingredient list
  • Settles into fine lines under the eyes
  • Requires a setting powder to prevent shine in t-zone
  • May be drying for those with Dry Skin

If you have normal to oily skin and prefer a lightweight, light to medium coverage foundation, this may be a good one to try.  While it won’t make it onto my holy grail list, I will continue using this foundation on days when I’m going for a lightweight, natural look.  This is one of the better drugstore foundations that I’ve tried.

Have you tried No7 Beautifully Matte Foundation?  What foundation would you like to see me test and review in the Foundation Over 40 Series?  Let me know in the comments!  As always, I really appreciate you stopping by and I would love to hear from you!

If you think that shimmer shadows, smokey eyes and bold colors are taboo for women over 40, think again!  The creator of b-glowing BEAUTY has something to say about that!  Frustrated by largely being ignored by the beauty industry, Lisa King decided to do something about it!

From Lisa herself:

“You see, post-40, the products of my past no longer worked for me. They felt drying, accentuated my wrinkles, and made me feel older than I was. I needed something that flattered my skin, but I wasn’t ready to sacrifice my sense of style for the boring, barely-there makeup made especially for mature women. The product I was searching for didn’t seem to exist—so, I decided to make it myself.

b-glowing BEAUTY is makeup for women like me. It’s for women who feel ignored by the beauty industry—women whose wants, needs, and desires aren’t being addressed. It’s not about fixing flaws—it’s about finding what works for you, and letting yourself GLOW.”

I don’t know about you but I’m shouting out a big Hallelujah, Amen to that!

The first product in b-glowing BEAUTY‘s line is the Illuminate + Shine Palette and I was recently given the opportunity to try it.  Let’s take a look at what it is and how it performs on Over 40, mature skin.

From the Company:

The Illuminate + Shine Palette is a rule-breaking, Age Embracing eye and face palette. From its innovative ingredients to its complementary colors, everything is designed to brighten and flatter mature eyes.  Filled with a brightening primer, highlighter, and eight pigment-packed shadows, this palette brightens, blurs, illuminates, smooths fine lines, and nourishes skin.

Packaging & What’s Included in the Palette

The Illuminate + Shine Palette palette comes packaged in a beautiful pink zippered case which is perfect for travel.  It includes a mirror and a flap that covers the highlighter and eye primer so that powders from the eye shadows don’t mix with them.  When you are done with the palette, you can remove it and use the zippered case as a clutch or to hold jewelry when you travel.  It is really pretty enough to display on your vanity!

The Palette contains eight beautiful eye shadows, both matte and shimmers, an eye primer and a cream highlighter.
Click To Tweet
Brighten + Perfect Cream Base Eye Primer can also be used as a redness reducing concealer on fair to medium skin tones.  The Inner Glow Cream Highlighter is used for brightening the complexion and adding a lit from within glow.

The products are infused with MicroVector Plump GABA-HYA—a moisture-rich blend of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other ingredients to help plump, hydrate and smooth the skin.

How pretty is this pink case? When you are done with the palette, remove it and reuse the clutch! Formula & Application Eyeshadows

There are eight Powder eye shadows included in the Illuminate + Shine Palette and I must say the colors are gorgeous.  The shades are wearable for an every day look or glammed up for an evening look.  These shadows are highly pigmented and very versatile.  The neutral colors work on all skin tones and you can mix and match them to create a variety of looks.

There are two matte shades, four satin shades and two shimmery shades:

  • Ethereal – Matte
  • Ella – Satin
  • Halcyon – Satin
  • Baroque – Shimmer (a gorgeous purple)
  • Silhouette – Matte
  • Cashmere – Satin
  • Vintage – Satin
  • Rococo – Shimmer (a beautiful gold)

The shadows apply effortlessly using any eye shadow brush and they blend perfectly.  There is very little fallout and there is no settling into creases, fine lines or wrinkles.  When used in combination with the eyeshadow primer, the wear time is a good 10-12 hours.

TIP:  For a higher color payout with the shimmery shades baroque & rococo, use your fingers and gently press the shadows onto the eyelid. I found this worked better than the brush with these two shades.

These eight eye shadow shades are not only gorgeous but wearable for everyday or an evening out. Mix and match to create multiple looks! Eyeshadow Primer/Base

In my opinion, the Brighten + Perfect Cream Base is the star of the show in this palette!
Click To Tweet
This eye primer is a pink nude tone and applies like a dream onto the skin.  It smooths and brightens, evens out the skin tone on the eyelids and extends the wear time of the eye shadows.  More importantly, it doesn’t crease, crack or settle into fine lines & wrinkles.  The primer doubles as a concealer on fair to medium skin tones to brighten and cover any redness or dark circles.

I hope that the company releases this eye primer as a standalone product in the future.  It is really fantastic!

Top: Inner Glow Cream Highlighter; Bottom: Brighten + Perfect Cream Base Highlighter

The Inner Glow Cream Highlighter is a pretty, universal shade that gives a subtle lit from within glow to your skin.  The creamy formula is easy to apply and blend.  I just tap it on with my fingers and then blend with a beauty blender sponge.  It didn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles and the result is a natural looking, radiant glow that is perfect for Over 40, mature skin.

Price

b-glowing Beauty Illuminate + Shine Palette retails for $48.00 USD.

Final Thoughts

I love the fact that this palette was created specifically for Over 40, mature skin BY someone who actually has mature skin!!

Overall, the palette is a really good value considering you get eight eyeshadows, an eye primer and a highlighter.   I recently took this with me on a weekend trip and it was perfect.  Basically the only other thing I needed was a blush and foundation.  And the beautiful pink packaging is an added bonus.  If you’re looking for a good quality, multi tasking palette, definitely give this one a try!  b-Glowing recently released another palette, b-glowing Enhance + Glow Eyeshadow Palette and I can’t wait to try it!

To purchase the Illuminate + Shine Palette or the new Enhance + Glow Eyeshadow Palette, visit my Amazon Shop Here and click on the Makeup category.

Disclosure: “I received this product for free from b-glowing Beauty.  Although the product was a gift, all opinions in this review remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the company.”

As always, I thank you so much for reading and really appreciate you stopping by.  Please take a moment to leave your comments below.  I’d love to hear from you!
