You’re good at what you do, and you may be wondering about possible next steps in your career. If you’re a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or licensed vocational nurse (LVN), you may have wondered about the process to become a registered nurse (RN). Is this the next step for you?

Converting from an LPN to an RN

First, you may be wondering about the differences in duties between the two roles. Registered nurses supervise LPNs; they can do all the same duties, but RNs can also develop care plans, oversee patient admissions and discharges, perform life support procedures, and manage a facility or hospital floor. If you are prepared for additional capabilities and responsibilities, this may be a good move for you.

If you’re an LPN, you can complete a bridge program to become an RN. If you earn an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN), it will take approximately 12 to 18 months.
