If you’re an enterprise looking to digitally transform, it’s important to prioritize your specific business outcomes first. The technical solutions should come secondary. After all, they’re there to support your goals, not influence them. Otherwise, focusing too much on infrastructure can hinder your chances of long-term, transformative success.
There are several key technologies on the market that lend themselves to digital transformation. These include things such as software-defined data centers (SDDC), hybrid cloud and hyper-converged computing. But adopting these technologies in the right way is critical. Enterprises shouldn’t just pick products based on the type of technology they’re looking to adopt. They need to focus on what their end goal is.
This challenge is at the heart of VMware and Hitachi’s partnership. Together, we’ve considered the integrations that enterprises need today to make it easy to meet performance and availability needs tomorrow. In other words, we focus on the technical aspects to ensure that they align with your business ambitions.
Together, Hitachi Vantara and the native integration of the entire VMware software stack provide five Unified Compute Platform solutions that can make it easier and faster for enterprises to accelerate time to business value. Our partnership has fueled as-a-service propositions that can enhance the efficiency of web and digital applications, as well as smart devices.
Case study: Supercharging Centrica’s growth
One such business that has benefitted from our world-class expertise and best-of-breed solutions is Centrica, the largest organization in the supply of electricity and gas to businesses and consumers in the UK, Ireland and North America.
The company needed a proposition that was designed specifically to automate and orchestrate any application in a ready-to-use platform. It also wanted to switch from a capex to an OpEx model to adapt to its changing business needs.
Centrica required a SDDC proposition that could extract the best out of the hybrid cloud, and so it switched over to VMware vRealize with Hitachi Enterprise Cloud. With Hitachi and VMware’s expertise in data management, Centrica could seamlessly move data between on-premise and cloud-based apps. It could also gain the benefits of a public cloud environment while still run on a private cloud internally.
The joint VMware and Hitachi solutions were implemented by Cognizant, a systems integrator. The results have been newly standardized and automated processes for Centrica. These are driving service virtualization and is shortening the organization’s path to digital transformation.
To find out more about Centrica’s journey and its benefits so far, come along to Hitachi NEXT 2018, a premier event for the digital revolution. It’s to be held from September 25th to 27th at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, California. You’ll get to hear from Sunny Sahajpal, EMEA Strategic Alliances Manager at VMware, and Neil Lewis, Cloud Services Strategist – EMEA at Hitachi Vantara.
VMworld US has long been the source of some of the biggest news in our industry, and this year’s edition, taking place in our 20th year, was no different. From extending our digital foundation to the Edge and IoT, to digital transformation stories and blockchain, and a conversation with Malala Yousafzai, the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, VMworld 2018 was the event at which VMware demonstrated how we’re helping our partners and customers to accelerate their innovation.
Like any major event, there’s so much to cover. To help, we’ve pulled together our top highlights as an introduction to what was discussed at our biggest ever event.
Extending digital foundation to the Edge and IoT
As the world of edge computing and IoT becomes more distributed, billions of connected devices require increasing levels of compute at the edge, which needs to be secured, managed and automated. To that end, on Tuesday we announced that we are developing a framework that extends the VMware hybrid and multi-cloud environments to the edge. This will help customers by providing local intelligence and compute from the data center to the cloud and on to the edge, building on our network edge investments.
Open source blockchain
Who isn’t talking about blockchain? It’s the buzz word promising to disrupt everything from finance to shipping. But it means a radical overhaul in mindset as well as technology. That’s why we announced Project Concord, a highly scalable energy-efficient engine for decentralized trust infrastructures, digital consensus and contract execution. You can find out more in the Office of the CTO’s blog post.
How we’re helping our customers on their digital transformation journey
As part of our general keynote, we heard from customers on their digital transformation experiences. A key takeaway of the session was the economic value delivered to enterprises who are on this journey. Conversations with IT leaders from the Brink’s Company and National Commercial Bank of Jamaica centered around the power of software-defined technologies in storage and networking, modern app development, as well as the best way to embrace Hybrid Cloud. There was also insights into the role of digital workspace technologies in improving the end-user experience for both employee and customer, which included tech leaders from DXC and Adobe.
Monetising the cloud
We are nothing without our partners – supporting them is critical to our ability to help our customers on their digital transformation journey. With multi-cloud environments becoming ever more prevalent, helping partners make sense of the myriad options available, and ensuring that customers are getting the right solution for their business requirements, is critical. That’s why just before VMworld we announced an increased effort in helping partners monetise the cloud. You can find out more by reading the thoughts of Louise Ostrom, vice president for network and security in EMEA at VMware.
Supporting the Malala Fund
As part of the general keynote on Tuesday, Sanjay Poonen, chief operating officer, Customer Operations, VMware, hosted Malala Yousafzai. As part of this, we will be supporting the work of the Malala Fund to advocate for girls’ education. To give as many people as possible the chance to hear Malala speak, we hosted one hundred high school students from Basic High School and Legacy High School in the Clark County, Las Vegas school district to watch the conversation. In addition, Dell Technologies announced that it is donating computers to both High Schools to further students’ access to technology.
Wishing you’d made it along but couldn’t justify the trip across the Atlantic? Don’t worry, VMworld Europe is only a couple of months away. Taking place in Barcelona from 5th November, attendees will be able to hear more from both global and regional customers, get hands on in the ever-popular labs, and connected with peers and colleagues from across the industry. We’re gearing up to open the door on security excellence with customers and partners alike at Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit, 10-11 September. Will you be joining us in London this year?
Security & Risk Management are a focus for all enterprises aiming to meet the pace and scale of the digital era. As businesses embrace new fast-evolving technologies, methodologies and tools, they need to develop increased resilience to thwart cyber-attacks, mitigate risk and drastically reduce the likelihood of data breaches. Join us at this years’ Gartner Security & Risk Summit for the opportunity to learn from VMware and industry experts about new threats, emerging technologies, how to address the Security & Risk skills gap and enable digital business in a world of escalating risk.
IT Security is Dead – Long Live IT Security!
In the modern datacenter or cloud, traditional network perimeter security models don’t provide enough visibility or control any longer to address the increasing sprawl of applications and users. In a digital business, IT organizations can be challenged to secure the interactions between users, applications, and data in an extremely dynamic environment.
A new approach to security design and deployment is needed. Security needs to become intrinsic to the infrastructure itself, rather than a bolted-on afterthought, and in a world where employees are now likely to be using multiple devices during their working day, we need to manage secure access and identity rather than use end-point devices as a proxy for user identity.
Join Richard Bennett, Head of Advisory Services for VMware in Northern EMEA on Tuesday 11 September at 12:00-12:30, to hear why transforming security in conjunction with good cyber hygiene is becoming a critical pre-requisite for business success. Transforming both networking and security is a vital part of meeting the digital expectations both users and the Board have. What’s more, this transformed infrastructure not only has to deliver secure business apps today, it also has to be flexible enough to be able to accommodate those not even yet on the horizon. This session explores the evolving role of security to both enable and protect business, the benefits of delivering a transformed ‘Virtual Cloud Network’ and critically, why this is all futile without improved cyber hygiene.
So, what else is on our agenda for this year?
VMware embeds security into the virtualization layer in which applications and data already live (providing foundational security services that are as flexible as the applications and data they protect) and into the enterprise mobility management platform that controls user access and delivers an optimal user experience.
This approach puts VMware software in a unique position within the infrastructure. From here, our technology provides new secure end-user engagement models and a deep insight into the interactions between users and applications, along with the context to understand what those interactions mean.
