Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Mirum, but any opinions expressed are 100% my own.

I love animals.  They bring my family and me such joy!   I can’t imagine not having our furry pet babies being apart of our home!

We are also not biased between cats and dogs either, we have always had at least one dog and one cat (sometimes more:)) in our home.

There is nothing more than I want for my animals is to stay safe and healthy.  The summertime can bring extra risks and I want to make sure I do all I can to make sure they are protected.

Taking Care of our Animals this Summer

The summertime can be such a fun time for all but it also has high temperatures that bring on extra challenges for our pet babies.

I have had quite a bit of experience with owning animals but I wanted to ask some of my doggie/kitty moms how they take care of their pets this summer.

There were top 5 things that kept coming up when asking my friends about taking care of their pets in the summer:

Tip 1: Make Sure They are Well Hydrated

Dogs and cats always need a good supply of water but in summer months it is even more important.  The heat can cause them to become dehydrated very quickly,  especially if they go outside or exercise with you.  Take water bowls with you when you go on a journey with them and make sure they are offered water even more often in the summer.

Tip 2: CONTROLLING FLEAS & TICKS

Fleas and ticks are a normal part of summer and pets.  Although fleas and ticks are known to be worst in the summer they can still be present year-round, even in colder climates, and can lay dormant for several months before hatching,  so it’s recommended to treat your pet each month throughout the entire year.

You can do this with PetArmor® Plus which is now available at Walmart.  I love to do my weekly shopping at Walmart, it is close to where I live and it has everything I need from groceries to pet needs.  I love that because I don’t have to make a special stop at a separate store for my animals.  As a mom of three teens, life is extremely busy and I love the convenience of a one-stop store.

The great thing about PetArmor® Plus is it is fast-acting, waterproof formula that helps break the flea life cycle by killing flea eggs and larvae for up to 12 weeks as well as kills ticks that may transmit Lyme disease.

SAVE MONEY ON PETARMOR PLUS

Right now you can get the Walmart ibotta offer: $4 off PetArmor Plus for Dogs or Cats, 3ct. (Valid March – September)

HOW TO APPLY PETARMOR PLUS TO YOUR DOG:

HOW TO APPLY PETARMOR PLUS TO YOUR DOG:

Applying the Product to Dogs:

Remove product tubes from the package.
Separate one tube from the others.
Hold the tube with notched end pointing up and away from the face and body. Use scissors
to cut off the narrow end at the notches along the line.
Invert tube over dog and use open end to part your dog’s hair.
Squeeze tube firmly to apply all of the solution to the dog’s skin as a spot to the dog’s back
between the shoulder blades.
Keep treated pets apart from each other, other pets and children for 24 hours after
treatment and until the product is dry. This helps prevent pets from ingesting the topical by
licking or grooming one another.

HOW TO APPLY PETARMOR PLUS TO YOUR CAT:

Remove product tubes from the package.
Separate one tube from the others.
Hold the tube with notched end pointing up and away from the face and body. Use scissors
to cut off the narrow end at the notches along the line.
While holding the cat with one hand, use the other hand to apply the solution. Invert the
tube and use the narrow end to part the cat’s hair.
Apply contents of one tube as a spot between the shoulder blades.
Hold the cat for a few seconds to give the solution time to be absorbed into the cat’s coat.

Tip 3: Keeping Pet Inside in Horrible Heat

Heat can be horrible this time of year for animals.  It is best to keep your animals inside when it is extremely hot.  Make sure you always have places available that have some shade when they are out.  If you exercise with your dog know its limits and don’t over exercise him/her.

Tip 4: Never Leave Pet in Car in Hot Temperatures

A car gets very hot very quickly.  It is more than dangerous to leave your furry friend in a car, especially in the summertime.

The temperature inside your vehicle can rise almost 20º F in just 10 minutes. In 20 minutes, it can rise almost 30º F and the longer you wait, the higher it goes. At 60 minutes, the temperature in your vehicle can be more than 40 degrees higher than the outside temperature.

Your vehicle can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness and even death, even when you don’t feel it’s too hot.  Cracking the window for your pet makes no difference.  So please please don’t leave them behind in the car.

Tip 5: Make Sure To Have So Much Fun With your Cat and/or Dog This Summer

The summer can give you more opportunities for fun with your pet than any other season.  There are dog parks and swimming places for your dogs that love to swim.  If you have a very active dog that likes to explore, you can take your dog hiking, camping, and much more.   If you use these tips this summer you are bound to have a blast with your pet this summer!

Memorial Day is such an important day for our nation!  It is a day and time to honor our fallen veterans who have served our country with the ultimate sacrifice!  We too often take our freedom for granted, even now our freedom isn’t what it used to be.  You hear every day in the news how it is being chipped away at every turn.  We must never take it for granted because truly in an instant it can be gone!

There are so many children who don’t even know what the day means except for the parades and yearly grill outs!  There is nothing wrong with enjoying this day together as a family but it is even more wonderful if you create a tradition or two around the meaning of this day and use it as an opportunity to teach your children.

Some Traditions to Create this Memorial Day:

Attend a Parade – Don’t just sit back and watch the parade but explain to your children the meaning of Memorial Day and show them how to honor the Vets that are apart of that parade by standing or applauding as they walk by!  These Veterans are still with us (they are the ones who made it home), it’s a great way to show your thanks as a family for all they have done!

Put Together a Care Package or Letter (drawings) for a soldier serving overseas now – Soldiers get lonely and miss their families terribly, having your children serve in this way helps them understand the sacrifice and teaches them about serving others!

Attend a Memorial Service – The city I grew up in does a service at the end of a parade where you hear a prayer and honor the soldiers with a singing of the National Anthem, it is always very moving!

Put out Your Flags – Waving your flag in your local parade or hanging it from your porch is a great way to show your patriotism and your respect for the ones who keep you safe!  It also shows a love of country.

Visit a National Memorial Site – If you live in a location that has one visit it together.  There are places like the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC or The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier or any place that honors the ones that have fallen!

Visit a battlefield – We have many battlefields you can visit!  There are reenactments and some fields that have been left untouched for history!  You can teach about the different battles or/and wars our country has been in!

Visit with Grandparents or others that have served that can share stories with your children.  My sons love to hear their grandfather tell stories about the time he was in the Marines!

Visit a Military Cemetery – Many people use this day to remember all the ones they have lost by visiting grave sites and placing flowers or just saying prayers!  Point out the military graves you see!  I realize not everyone believes or likes to visit the cemetery so this is just for the ones who feel comfortable with it!

Have Special time of Prayer – Pray for our soldiers that are currently serving and their families.  Their wives/husbands often are taking care of their children alone for huge amounts of time and everyone involved needs prayer.

Pray for the families that have lost a loved one in war or in service, this is such a hard time and they need all the prayer they can get!  Pray for our nation, if there was ever a time it needed it, is now!

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

I know what you are thinking!

Chore list for 17 to 18yr olds?

Well, I wanted to stress that just because our kids are getting to be young adults doesn’t mean they don’t need to be responsible for housework.

They won’t need chores charts and stickers but they do need to be reminded they are part of the family and still need to continue to work as one.

For a matter of fact, I often hear moms complain more about this age group than any other.

Once a child gets a job or goes to college they don’t help around the house anymore OR worse they have no school or job and just become couch potatoes.

We are seeing more and more in our culture where our young people don’t want to move out of the parent’s home until they are in their mid-20s or even 30’s!!

I’m not talking about children that are working businesses with their families and/or special needs; I’m talking about children (young adults) that feel like it is their right to laze around in young adult life!

We do them no favors by allowing this.

Once our children reach 17 we want them to be able to run a household.

They should be doing:

All of the chores mentioned in the other age groups:  Toddler/Preschooler, 6-8 Years Old, 9-12 Years old 13-16 yrs old

Their Own Laundry

Should be able to Cook whole meals and clean up

Mow the lawn & Other Yard Work

Do basic car maintenance (like checking the oil and tires)

They should keep up their room and their personal space!

They should be able to organize a budget for themselves!

They should be able to keep up with their work, activity (sports, etc) and job schedules

If your teen struggles it is ok, work with them on it!  Your job at teaching them hasn’t ended yet; they need YOU to help them become the adult they are meant to be!  These things will help them out so much in their adult lives and they will be grateful for the knowledge, maybe not right away but eventually!

Easter is a wonderful time for the family to get together, and a wonderful time to share a wonderful meal together.   As a Christian Easter has deep meaning for my family but even if you don’t share the same faith Easter is a great time of fellowshipping together and enjoying one another.

Spring is here!  The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting shorter but I love having more daylight!  If you have been reading here for a while you will know that I love family nights!  This is such a wonderful way to connect with your kids!

Your kids love the time you and your spouse focus totally on them.  No work, no phones, nothing but games, events, or just plain family togetherness.   This is such a great time to get to know your kids even more and to have great conversations! Every season I love to share some ideas for family nights and I wanted to make sure you had a good list for this spring season!

Visit a local carnival – these can be SO much fun.  My daughter wanted to go to a local carnival last year in a shopping center, honestly, I thought it would be hoakie and not really for us, I was WRONG!  We had such a great time, just keep in mind they can get expensive.  I put a limit on the kids right off,  a few rides, they may get to pick 1 or 2 games each and then one snack.  If you don’t place a limit, it will be expensive!

Plant a garden – Gardening can be such a wonderful activity to do to connect.  You get your hands in the dirt and can have great conversation while you are planting new life!  If you are not a natural gardener and the thought of planning a whole garden is too much, think about a kitchen window herb garden or square box gardening.   There are so many different options nowadays.

Board Games – Board games bring out so many great things in the family.  Well, they can bring out the bad too (but even there, we have opportunities to teach about being a gracious loser and winner, taking turns, being respectful, and more).  You can check out our favorite preschool game list!

Movie Night – I have so many memories of the great movies my family have watched together on family nights.  We always get out the blankets, make the popcorn, and cuddle in for a night of movie watching.  Now with Netflix and Redbox, it is so easy to have a great movie night!  If you are new to family nights, this is an easy one to start with!!!

Take a Scenic Drive or Nature Walk – For most of us the fall season is beautiful and the color or the leaves changing is just amazing!  A wonderful way to appreciate how creative our God is!!  Enjoy it as a family!

Play in the Rain – If it is not storming surprise your kids one day and just go out and play in the rain.  We should all do this sometime.  It’s refreshing and fun and it will create a wonderful memory

Putt Putt Golf – This is a really fun family evening!  Putt-Putt can be for all ages and you can talk and share stories as you work your way through the course.  if you can go out for pizza together that night.  Creates great times together!

Outside Activities – Go to a park and picnic, go fishing, fly a kite,  star gaze, blow bubbles and play with sidewalk chalk!  Play hopscotch and outdoor games.   Get a family softball game or throw a Frisbee.  There are so many things you can do outdoors in the spring!

Have an Easter Themed night – Paint hard boiled eggs,  make baskets together, go to a Good Friday Service or Passion Play!  Celebrate the true meaning of Easter as a family!

Clean up your grill and have your first BBQ – Nothing like the first burgers and dogs of the season. Yum!  My kids always look forward to the first grill out of the season!
