It used to be that we would travel to shop. Unable to find our favourite designer brands in Calgary, we would forgo a lot of sightseeing, museums, festivals or workouts, instead carefully planning the shopping that needed to be done before returning home.
However, the city’s fashion offering has come a long way and now with the hotly anticipated opening of Saks Fifth Avenue at CF Chinook Centre, we can find all the fashion goodies we need to stay on-trend and maybe even, vacation-ready before we go.
It goes without saying that the brand is synonymous with luxury, and this third Canadian location has over 115,000 square feet of decadence, including men’s and womenswear. The focus at this location is on outerwear, shoes, and accessories, but the offering is extensive and there’s little chance you’ll want to leave empty-handed. We certainly did not.
But let’s talk about the menswear experience, an area where many retailers fall flat. Here are the three areas where we spent most of our time on our first visit and what we will certainly be heading back for.
The accessories. Brands include Bally, Tumi, and our favourite: John Hardy (this gets extra attention as we wear John Hardy wedding rings). While he’s not normally a hat-wearer, Aly couldn’t resist scooping up a very Don Draper – esque chapeau.
Men’s shoes. You can never have enough of them, and this is often where we START putting together an outfit for the day. Brands include Ferragamo, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Valentino. The current collection has us lusting over their luxurious sneakers and high style loafers.
Ready-to-Wear. Saks Fifth Avenue knows how to dress us for winter, bringing in a broad selection of go-to brands like Canada Goose and Moose Knuckle, but we spent much of our time in the denim department, ultimately leaving with a pair of ‘not quite ready to wear in Calgary’ white Rag & Bone jeans.
In addition to the fabulous selection, we were also thrilled to find out that Saks Fifth Avenue is a long-term partner of RBC. Clients receive 2X Rewards points on all in-store purchases when they pay with their RBC Rewards credit card. What we love about this is that points can be redeemed for, well, more fashion! You can find out more about the program and learn about their mobile app here.

Palm Springs our happy place. If you’ve ever been, you know that the moment you step off the plane and into the open-concept terminal, the desert air immediately calms you. We have been visiting Palm Springs together for over a decade, loving it not only as a mid-century design mecca, but also a place where relaxation is taken seriously.
One of the most idyllic spots to visit in “Palm” is the must-see Parker Palm Springs. The glorious boutique hotel, formerly Merv Griffin’s Resort and Givenchy Spa, was re-designed by Jonathan Adler in 2004, restoring its reputation as the “it” place to visit, stay, and of course, do some celebrity-spotting.
Take a dip in the saltwater pool. Playing up the height of the space, windows are accented with floor to ceiling striped drapery panels, and cabanas are covered in a white canvas, detailed with the light blue border. This is where matchy-matchy works. (Photo: Courtesy of Palm Springs Yacht Club)
The vibe is quintessentially Palm Springs, four-meter-high hedges, carved white blocks and oversized orange doors open up to an eclectic and retro getaway hotel with hits of the unexpected around every corner. Dare we say, it’s like no other hotel we have ever seen. Enjoy a cocktail in the bohemian lobby bar, dinner at ultra-glamorous Mister Parker, or a comfortable lunch at Norma’s. When you’re ready to take your experience to the next level – indulge yourself at the Palm Springs Yacht Club, a spa locating on the sprawling grounds of the Parker Estate.
As you enter it’s clear that every detail of this nautical-themed spa has been thought through. The lobby is grand and serene, with high ceilings clad in over-scaled shiplap, capped with crown moulding and then covered in silver and navy reflective wallpaper. The navy and off-white palette is accented with Adlers iconic furniture pieces, lighting, and artwork that add a whimsical touch to thespace. Even though every piece makes a statement, the palette is still calming and relaxing but unlike any spa we have ever experienced.

Adjacent to the reception lobby is a meditation and yoga space, a nice touch for those who were wise enough to give themselves extra time, which we did not. So, we opted to dive right into the experience.
We were given a captain’s welcome by the exceptionally good-looking staff and invited to enjoy a shot of chilled cucumber vodka before we entered – another surprising touch and affirmation that we had come to the right place.
After slipping into our white terrycloth robes and flip-flops, we started to explore the massive common area, complete with a salt-water pool plenty large enough to swim a few laps, two spas and seating areas designed to allow for quiet solitude before a treatment or a light lunch with your spa-mate.
Take a snooze or enjoy a book poolside in the perfect chaise lounges. (Photo: Courtesy of Palm Springs Yacht Club)
A dip and steam later, we were ready to go on the “Yachtsman’s Voyage” – consisting of a deep tissue massage, pore cleansing facial and scalp massage. Naturally, they were all too happy to customize the experience for your individual preference in scents, pressure, and bed temperature.
For us, the highlight of our journey was the scalp massage. Not a treatment we normally partake in, but one that left us like puddles in the hands of the therapist. There may have been some light snoring at one point, they didn’t seem to mind and even applauded our ability to “let it all go.”
Fully relaxed, rejuvenated and ready for happy hour in the lounge, we left The Palm Springs Yacht Club with a sense that maybe we just found a spa that caters to men as much, if not more, than the ladies. Try it out for yourself.
Throwing a party is a lot of work, nevermind the expense of feeding and serving you a cocktail or nine. So, we think the best way to show your appreciation for your host is to gift them generously – who knows, next year you might be invited back! Here are our suggestion for items you can purchase so you’re contributing to the party as well as leaving something behind for the host.
Check out this clip from the segment we did on CTV Morning Live Vancouver.
Grey Goose has come out with a limited edition Nordic Tube in time for the holidays, perfect for adding some French luxury to your bar and creating high-end cocktails. If your host is into scotch, treat them to a bottle of the world’s finest by Dewar’s.
Refresh your host’s decor with a holiday piece from Real Canadian Superstore, including barware, glasses, zodiac mugs and beyond.
Make sure that while you’re shopping at a Real Canadian Superstore, Loblaws, Joe Fresh or Shoppers Drug Mart that you use your PC Financial World Elite Mastercard and earn 3X the PC Points (30 points for every dollar you spend) and redeem them in the new year food, clothing, housewares or almost anything else you need.
And no gift is complete without the trusted batteries. This December Duracell has teamed up with the Children’s Miracle Network. For every package of batteries purchased Duracell will make a donation the charity with the goal of raising $150,000.
