Welcome to The Kachet Life, inspiring women to elevate their everyday! Born as a how to dress well on a real-life budget-project of creator Kachet Jackson-Henderson, this blog has since grown into a survival guide of sorts for every woman living in these crazy, what-the-heck times. See you on the blog!
This may come as a shock to you, but lately, it’s been a bit of a challenge to figure out what to wear! This tends to happen to me when I get in the habit of wearing the same things over and over. Usually, around that time, I turn to Stitch Fix! I love Stitch Fix because their stylists are a friendly voice in helping me build my wardrobe.
About Stitch Fix
Are you familiar with Stitch Fix? Stitch Fix is a personal styling service and stylists learn what you like to send you clothes you’ll love. Going to the mall or a department store can be so exhausting so getting a Fix is a nice change because I can try on everything at home. Stitch Fix carries women’s sizes 0-24W and XS-3X (maternity and petite, too) and all of the returns are super easy & free. I keep what I like and I send back the rest in the pre-paid shipping bag. You can drop it off at any USPS mailbox and go on about your business.
You pay $20 to have your Fix curated by a personal stylist, which applies towards anything you keep. If you keep all five of your Stylist Picks, you get a 25% discount on your entire purchase!
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Stitch Fix a few times over the years and I’m so excited that they still haven’t run out of good ideas! First, it was Stitch Fix Men… then shoes…and now, EXTRAS!
Stitch Fix Extras
Extras! All of the things that you need to help you feel “complete,” including bras, underwear, camisoles, socks, and more, all in women’s sizes XS – 3X. The price for adding Extras to your fix range from $9.50 to $65.
So what happens if they arrive and they don’t fit? It’s okay! You only pay for the Extras you want to keep. Like with the traditional Stitch Fix model, shipping is free both ways with your pre-paid shipping bag.
It gets better: your $20 Styling Fee goes towards any Extras you keep!
In addition to my traditional fix, the team at Stitch Fix gave me access to the feature early and I was able to add a few extras to my cart: a 3-pack of socks, camisole and a brief to match.
All of the EXTRAS you can add to your order!
About my Fix
So, this was one of my favorite fixes ever. Like, EVER! Like, my first fix back in 2012 was my favorite, and this might be a close second. It was super tailored to my personal style, and I attribute that to being very communicative about my style. In addition to updating my profile to reflect my current preferences and sizes, I made a note for my stylist and gave her a link to my Instagram and Pinterest accounts so she could see what I’m wearing on a daily. If you’re a little bit hesitant about your Fix, take the extra minute and LEAVE NOTES! It ensures a great experience!
I kept three out of the five pieces and would’ve kept the other two if one item had been in a different color and one in a different size.
*Note: Stitch Fix allows you to exchange items that you loved for a different size pending availability
Here’s one look:
Give me all of the peekaboo shoulders! I have a sweater that is similar to this one (I wore it in this post), and now I’m so happy to have one in black! It is perfect for day or night, but you gotta put on some cute patchwork jeans like these (they were in my fix, too) and strut your stuff!
I was obsessed with this gray overcoat with grommet sleeves as soon as I pulled it out of the box. This winter I am all about the layering, so this was a fun option! I’m wearing it with jeans but it would be equally as cute with a skirt, and it will dress up my yoga pants!
Stitch Fix Extras launch Feb. 22 and will become available to all female clients through the Spring. Add some to your next Fix!! I can’t wait to hear what you think! Thanks for visiting. xo
Just a couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of joining the Napa Downtown Association for a tour of Downtown Napa over the course of a few days and I took full advantage of it since my exploration was limited due to the Napa Valley Film Festival last fall.
There are so many ways to explore the world-famous wine region, but it’s such a special experience when you spend time in Downtown Napa. Just an hour’s drive away from Sacramento, Downtown Napa is the perfect getaway for couples or for your girls trip! I am so excited to share some of the best places to eat and drink (and play, too) in Downtown Napa!
We kicked off our trip at Compline, a new restaurant and wine bar in the near the town center. What I loved about Compline was the how the natural light filled the space. The food is all seasonal and prepared with care. They are one of the only places in Downtown Napa that offer an upscale late night eat option, staying open until midnight. Another eatery we enjoyed was Gran Electrica, which originally opened in Brooklyn. While people may go for the tacos, they should go for the entrees (chile verde, oh my)… and the cocktails! Looking for the best view of the valley with a killer sunset and libation to boot? Head to Sky & Vine on the roof of the Archer Hotel.

Hit up Oxbow Public Market
Oxbow Public Market is Napa’s public marketplace, home to many vendors and artisans. We’re so lucky that it’s located right in Downtown Napa! If you’ve ever been to the Ferry Building in San Francisco, then you’ll fit right in at Oxbow (and if you’re a newbie, you’ll be right there, too). It’s best enjoyed when you have a little time to stop at all of the eateries for a taste. My favorites are:
Downtown Napa is home to 25 tasting rooms, so you can enjoy the best of the valley right in the district! The area is very walkable, so you don’t need to worry about your car. Some of my fav tasting rooms:
The best part about tasting in Downtown Napa is the Napa Wine Tasting Card, which allows you to visit 10 of those tasting rooms and receive half-priced tastings. The card is $15 and is valid for an entire calendar year. You can pick one up at the visitor’s center or order online.
*These tasting rooms are part of the Downtown Napa tasting program
Blind taste testing at the Napa General Store
Now, you don’t have to experience blind taste testing if you don’t want to. I can’t lie, this was fun. On the second round, I guessed pinot gris and it was chardonnay!
Pairing at Brown Estate Back Bar Tasting
The back bar tasting at Brown Estate is very exclusive, as it’s only available on weekdays and comes at a premium. All tastings must be reserved online.
Tasting at Vermeil Wines
Ready to go to Downtown Napa?
The Downtown Napa Association’s website is your one-stop shop for finding all of the information on the businesses in the downtown district. You’ll also find an events calendar and guides to help you plan your perfect visit. You can also pop into the visitor center down at the riverfront (across from the Napa River Inn entrance) if you have any questions, need recommendations, or just want to say hi!
Thank you JaM Cellars for sponsoring this post. Looking for Butter Chardonnay near you? Check out their easy-to-use Store Locator! Just pop in your zip code and the Butter will be waiting.
If you’ve been part of The Kachet Life fam for a while, you know that Mother’s Day is not my favorite holiday. I’m not alone. A few of my friends who are also part of the Motherless Daughter club cringe toward the middle/end of April when all of the Mother’s Day “propaganda” (as I like to call it) comes out. I’m so proud to be partnering with JaM Cellars and Butter Chardonnay to share some ways to honor the moms who have left us in hopes of finding some inner peace during a season meant for blooming new life and energy!
Allow yourself to cry
It’s okay to cry, and I say this after I beat myself up for crying last weekend . So many of us hold it in and don’t allow for the release and it seems to only come out at the most random of times (yes I have cried in a parking lot before). But, you have to let it out, and for as long as it takes. It’s okay to miss her. It’s okay to cry for her. I still (and will) cry for mine. Navigating life without her is tough, especially since I didn’t know my mom when I became an adult. There are so many instances where I wish I could call her, or things I want to tell her since I have become a full-fledged business owner. I’ve been tested in so many ways, and I swear some of my feelings around it, only my mom would understand. I have many moments of wondering “what would she do?” and somehow finding the answer inside myself. That in itself brings tears, and it’s okay. You’re okay, and you can let others know that you are a safe space for them.
“Adopt” a Mom
Is there a woman in your life that is a mom figure to you? Let her know that she matters by doing a little something for her on or around Mother’s Day. It can be as small or as large as your feeling up to this year. Take her to lunch, send her a card, or give her a bottle of Butter Chardonnay! It is full of flavor, aromatic and the perfect price point.
You could take it a step further and ask your social circle if they know of a mother that is deserving of recognition, and do something nice for a stranger. What a gift you could give someone else who’s sacrificed to make sure their family has the best, a sacrifice that maybe your own mother made for you at one point.
Get together with others who share your pain
Celebrating memories of your mother can comfort you in ways you cannot imagine. Everyone who I consider a close friend of mine has heard at least one story about my mother or grandmother. It is very therapeutic to talk about them and even more so in a group of people who have the same hole in their heart. I get together with a group of women a couple of times a year for “A Toast to Mom” brunch and we are all in different stages of life and grief. We are between ages 27-60. Some of us lost our mothers over 20 years ago, and some of us lost her last year. We are all very different but we are all the same. That commonality is priceless and I always feel better after I leave our get-togethers.
Take the time you need for your mom. Your way.
When you are living life without your mom, and important dates come along, it’s true when they say every year is different. From my own experience, some years I have been extremely joyous and wanting to do everything I could to honor her. Other years, I’ve burrowed myself so deep in the blankets that I wasn’t sure I’d ever come out. This year, I’m feeling pretty good, and I’m going to honor her by reminiscing about my favorite times with her.
When I think of my mom, I really think about her strength and beauty. I remember how if there wasn’t a way, she always made a way. She did everything she could to make sure I had a good life, a life full of love, support, and she gave me the freedom to let me come into my own. She is worthy of every toast I could give to her if she were still here, but I’m not letting that stop me. The juicy flavor of Butter is one that I will enjoy for us because love never dies!
My mom’s wine time and Butter Chardonnay
This wasn’t always the case, but around the time I turned 11, my mom would have a glass of wine after dinner. In hindsight, maybe I, my grandmother, AND my great-grandmother were driving her crazy…because I knew not to interrupt her during that time!
I imagine if she were here, we’d enjoy laughing about those times during one of our wine nights. We’d catch up on our weeks, talk about the silly things the men of our homes have done (because I truly believe she would’ve found love), and watch How to Get Away with Murder. Like Annalise, my mother was bold and not one to be messed with. The flavors of Butter would match her boldness, with notes of stone fruit and baked-lemon and a vanilla finish that we would both enjoy.
The aromatics of Butter are delightful and present upon your first pour!
This Mother’s Day, I’ll be raising a glass of Butter Chardonnay to my mother and all of the wonderful things that made her who she was. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating the special lady in your life, and if yours is longer with us, please know that my heart is with you.
If you follow bloggers, influencers or small businesses on Instagram, chances are that you’ve seen them participate in a loop or secret giveaway. For bloggers, they can be a way to grow your following and for businesses, a way to get in front of potential customers, but is a loop or secret giveaway right for you? Here’s some information on those types of giveaways, and the good, bad, and ugly that comes with them.
First, what is a loop giveaway?
A loop giveaway is when a group of bloggers post the same photo at the same time and tag each other in the comments. They can vary between 5 and 35+ participants depending on how much the participant pays as a buy-in and the average size of the giveaway. Followers must follow each account mentioned in the caption of each photo until they’ve “looped” all the way back to the original account they follow. Depending on the organizer, the buy-in, and participants, you can garner anywhere from 100 – a few thousand followers over the giveaway period.
What is a secret giveaway?
A secret giveaway is similar to a loop giveaway but it’s done completely different. For starters, you don’t have to post a picture on your account. In fact, you don’t have to do anything, but the sponsors of the loop do. The loop organizer makes sure to have the sponsors drive traffic to their account and to follow all of the accounts they are following. The groups are usually around 15-30, depending on the host. You can get between 500 – 24,000 followers over a two day period depending on a variety of factors.
There are many reasons why someone would take part in a loop or secret giveaway on Instagram, but usually, the main reason is to grow followers on the platform and to grow them fast. Loop and secret giveaways are fast and easy ways to do so without buying fake followers in bulk. Usually, the hosts of the giveaway encourage the followers to like the last (few) picture(s) on the accounts they follow, which can boost your engagement on other posts during the giveaway period.
So, depending on your social media strategy, growing your followers can be good. Let’s be real: it’s the first thing people want to know when they measure your blog’s success (I frickin HATE that, but that’s for another post), and some brands want to see a good amount of people behind your brand. BUT, now that you have the followers, can you be so sure that they are going to stick around? Be prepared to lose about 20% or more of your new followers within a couple of days. The rest will slowly taper off, that is, unless you participate in another giveaway, get lucky and get reposted on a highly engaging account, put in a lot of work, go viral, or a combination of the previously mentioned.
Now, if they remain a follower, are they going to engage with your content, or just wait for your next giveaway? Sometimes it’s the latter and that can really affect your engagement rate, which to me and many industry experts, is the true selling point of influence to a brand. If you’re not getting the engagement that matches your following number, it can actually work against you.
Last year I participated in a handful of giveaways. One giveaway that I did two months ago was a secret giveaway. Being honest, it left me feeling odd, and not just me, but my Instagram account.
At first, I thought it was in my head, especially after a couple of my blogger friends questioned my reasons for doing a giveaway. Everyone does their own thing but the fact that my account seemed to be “dinged” for participating in one, really made me regret doing it. It took about three weeks for my account to “reset.”
A little more to chew on
If you participate in the same loop or secret giveaway group, you’ll find that your numbers won’t grow as much because most of you share the same followers as it is, which in a way, is good, because you are retaining followers. While everyone is focused on growth, many forget to keep their loyal followers engaged. Don’t forget about them! You need them!
There are so many perspectives on this, What works for someone else won’t necessarily work for you and vice versa, so take it all in and decide what the best option is for you and your blog. If you have any questions along the way, you can schedule a strategy session with me to talk through it all!
With all that I’ve said, here is where I’m at: I’m not sure how I feel about participating in another loop or secret giveaway. But whatever I do, it’ll be on my terms!
Here’s to growth on our own terms!
If you loved the post or have a question, please leave a comment! Thank you for stopping by!

I am SO happy that spring is here! It’s only going to be a few short months until summer arrives and the weddings and events start stacking up. With the change of seasons comes a little adjustment to our routines. I wanted to share a few beauty hacks with you for the season that will keep you looking and feeling your best, all tried and true by yours truly!
Use Micellar Water
You’ll be getting oilier but washing your face too frequently will start to strip your skin of its natural oils, causing some unpleasant dryness. I usually get patchy and it’s not a good look when it comes to applying makeup. For quick cleansing, using micellar water is an effective and eco-friendly way to do so! Forever a favorite in Europe, Micellar water is increasingly popular and comes in a variety of formulations. If you’re a wipe kind of girl, you are covered!
Treat Your Lips
While many may up the lip care in winter, we should really be giving our lips extra TLC all year-round! All those pretty and vibrant matte lipsticks can take moisture out of your lips, so make sure you are using moisturizing lip balm and a lip scrub, too. Also, if you’re spending a lot of time out in the sun, your lips can get easily sunburned so making sure there is SPF in your lip moisturizer.
Deep Condition Your Hair
I like to do a lot of different things with my hair over the summer, but I have to be mindful of just how much I’m doing to it. A lot of excessive styling can wreak havoc on our strands! I’m a big fan of deep conditioning on the weekends when I’m kicking back and leaving the product on my hair for an hour or two.
Keep your skin smooth with Nad’s Ultra-Smoothing Exfoliating Wax Strips
With cute dresses, tank tops and short shorts on the horizon, keeping skin smooth and sleek is non-negotiable. I have been shaving my arms and legs forever, but I was happy to learn about Nads Ultra-Smoothing Exfoliating Wax Strips.
The wax strips contain grapefruit and pomegranate extracts and are non-irritating to sensitive skin. WIN!
100% Vegan and Cruelty-Free, the 2-in-1 Buff & Wax strips gave me a nice and light exfoliation before I applied my wax strip. I waxed my arms with the strips and was amazed by the results! Even my friend today at coffee said: “Oh, wow, your skin is really smooth!” I definitely recommend that you give Nad’s Exfoliating Wax Strips a try for your at-home hair removal needs!
What are your spring beauty hacks!
I’d love hear how you stay flawless this season! xo
Spring is here, and even though the weather is a little bit unpredictable at times, I am so happy for more sunshine and longer days. CJ and I moved into a new home a couple of months ago, and I have been itching to entertain friends in our new space. Because of our busy and sometimes conflicting schedules, we still had things to check off of our list before the house was “presentable.” I finally told myself to let that notion go, and host some ladies for a spring themed brunch! Life is short. Who cares if the pictures are on the wall, right?
When’s the last time you got together with the girls for Sunday Funday? It’s so easy to default to your favorite local brunch spot, but believe me when I say that it’s easy to host one yourself! When I began preparing my menu, all of my stress went away when I decided to shop for everything at Nugget Markets. The convenience, quality and superior customer service I received empowered me to carry out my duties of hostess, as team members in various departments became my partners in entertaining!
All ready for the guests!
SPRING BRUNCH PUNCH beverage station!
About Nugget Markets
With 12 locations throughout Northern California, Nugget Markets has been committed to providing an extensive selection of quality products, exceptional service and lower prices than any other conventional grocery store for over 90 years. I’ve been going to Nugget since I was a kid! As an adult, I appreciate their commitment to offering their guests both conventional and specialty products. After taking a tour of the store, so many things that I had glanced over in the aisles started to tell a really great story. On your next visit, I encourage you to take a closer look at the tags on the shelves. Items that are organic, local (within 100 miles), gluten-free, non-GMO, vegetarian, vegan, raw, dairy free, fair trade and more, are noted! You can be sure that you are purchasing items that your guests can enjoy, no matter their lifestyle. They take the same pride and care when it comes to their Fresh to Market offerings.
About Fresh to Market
Fresh to Market is Nugget Market’s house brand. Each product is carefully sourced for quality, values, and location. I used numerous Fresh to Market items as I created my brunch spread including the flowers, the vegetables and bread used for my main dish, and the cake from their bakery. As a busy hostess, it made me feel good to know that my guests were getting the very best.
Say Hello to Spring with Fresh-to-Market flowers
Cheese boards are irresistible. Well, unless you’re lactose intolerant.
Nugget offers many different cheese board options, including this “build your own” from the Gourmet-to-Go menu. I was able to work closely with the resident cheesemonger to select cheeses and a meat that worked well with my brunch theme. The petite breakfast from Marin County Cheese, an espresso soaked cheddar, and the smoked chorizo was perfect! Because I had a marble lazy susan in my cabinet, and the presentation was already amazing, I just transferred it over… but I’ll take all of the credit.
That Asparagus and Leek Bread Pudding tho…
The gals diggin in…
When things go off without a hitch!
I threw everyone for a loop when I dropped my Asparagus and Leek Bread Pudding on the table.
Yes, you read that right: asparagus and leeks…in bread pudding!
I can’t lie, it was soooo goood, and there was none left by the end of the day. Would you believe it was my first time making it? I watched my mother perfect her sweet dessert version but never attempted any version of my own before the brunch. I wanted to prepare a main dish that would be full of flavor, rich texture and incorporated the best of the season, and that’s just what I did. My guests went back for seconds!
If only you could smell through the screen…
I couldn’t be stingy, so here is the recipe for you (and for my friends asking for it when they left).
Asparagus and Leek Savory Bread Pudding
A crowd-pleasing easy brunch recipe. Add your own creative spin by using seasonal vegetables!
1 pound Fresh-to-Market Country Breakfast Sausage
6 Fresh-to-Market Eggs
1 loaf Brioche Bread (cubed)
1 Leek (chopped)
1/2 pound Asparagus (chopped)
1 pint Half & Half
1/4 cup Parsley (chopped)
2 tbsp Unsalted Butter
1 cup Gryuere (grated)
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Ground Black Pepper
2 tbsp Mixed herb seasoning
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
While the oven heats, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet. Once coated, add the sausage and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until browned. Transfer the sausage to a large bowl.
Using the reserved fat in the pan, saute the chopped leek and asparagus, until softened and lightly browned. Add to the bowl with the sausage.
Add your bread cubes, grated cheese, parsley and 1 tbsp of the herb blend and mix well. Once well combined, spread into a prepared baking dish and prepare your egg mixture.
Whisk the eggs, half-and-half, salt, pepper and the remaining 1 tbsp herb seasoning together in a bowl.
Once combined, pour over the baking dish, evenly coating the spread.
Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top of the pudding is lightly browned and “crusty.”
Spoon, serve and enjoy!
Feel free to substitute the butter with olive oil (or your favorite oil)
If you have issues with texture, or don’t want such a rich dish, pour the batter over the bread/sausage mixture and immediately place it in the oven. If you want to evoke more richness, let it sit in the fridge for an hour+.
If you cannot find a loaf of Brioche bread, you can use the Fresh-to-Market Bakery roll packs (2) and chop them into cubes.
Some may encourage you to remove the crust from the bread. I kept mine on there for an additional crunch and for presentation (it sure looks, pretty, doesn’t it?)
Speaking of bread, you don’t have to use brioche, but if you do, you won’t be disappointed!
I used leek and asparagus because they are in season, but feel free to use whatever vegetables are in season, and handy in the fridge.
This was around the time Katrina was professing her love for Anita Baker!
That punch packed quite the “punch”
Dessert anyone? This cake was so delicious and so light! A must for any springtime fete! If you can, order 24 hours in advance.
You guys. A lot has been going on! So many great opportunities have happened to me/The Kachet Life in the Sacramento community, not to mention The Blog Bloc turned one this month! I feel like I just wrote the blog post telling you all that I was taking a leap. It’s been an exciting and fun time. But, you probably have noticed it’s been a little bit quiet around here on the website. By dedicating so much time to my events and focusing on being a great creative partner to my clients, I haven’t had much “left” for the blog. When I sat here to write, nothing came to me.
So, I walked away and tried again.
The same thing happened.
Stuck in a rut? When it came to the blog, yes, and if I’m being honest, it really hurt.
This is my baby.
I never want to let it go, but I was stuck in a rut when it came to creating content here. I’m so happy to share that I am finally out of it. It’s been an interesting journey and now, I’m going to share it with you, in case it helps you (or someone you know) if you get stuck in one.
I cried and I’m not ashamed to admit it. It started more like “I’m supposed to be creative and creating and I’m not! I’m emailing people and hearing nothing. What’s wrong with me?” The hardest thing about being an entrepreneur is keeping it pushin’ even when things are slow. When you are your brand, it’s hard not to take it personally, but it’s always good to keep things in perspective, and not block your blessings. The best things have always seemed to happen when I least expected them to, so I trusted in that, got myself together and started exploring my options.
I talked to people about it
It wasn’t long until I realized that I was in good company. Isn’t it funny how sometimes we can feel like we’re on an island, and then you encounter a couple of your peers, spill a little bit of your tea and they say, “Girl, me too.” Sometimes you need a little bit of validation! I did! Through talking about my situation, and also learning about their unique ones, it helped me put a lot of my future goals into perspective and not beat myself up for being a little stuck.
I got out of the house
And not just out of the house taking long lunches and numerous coffee dates, but I actually became a docent at The Urban Hive, a coworking space in Sacramento. Why on earth would someone get another job when they are already so busy? Well, the truth is for the first few months of 2018 I was slow from a business and starting to worry. Through this worry, I started losing confidence and didn’t want to be around a ton of people, even when The Blog Bloc forced me to. After meeting my friend Rebecca at The Urban Hive for a work sesh, I felt such good energy from the space and from the people that work there. So much so, that I immediately inquired about how I could become part of the family. Next week I was behind the front desk learning the ropes and building connections with members.
By being there during the midday, I also have a greater appreciation for those of us who are embracing that freelance/remote/entrepreneurial lifestyle and it has actually inspired me to do a few new things of my own!
I started writing, even if I didn’t finish
I have about ten blog posts that I have yet to complete. I know that’s a lot to leave hanging, but I didn’t want to “lose” any of the creative juice that I had when it was available, so they have remained in draft form. If you are a content creator, you may understand the need to get an idea on “paper,” even if it still needs work. I had to get it out and documented. Progress is better than finished or than it is perfect. Don’t worry, they won’t remain in draft form for long! I’m finishing them up and you’re going to LOVE WHAT’S COMING YOUR WAY!
Those are just a few things that helped me get out of this creative rut.
What are some ways that you have gotten out of one?
Leave your tips in the comments so we can support each other.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t go inside a Whole Foods Market store without spending some time in the beauty aisles. Many of my skin and hair care staples have been discovered there, and I’m so honored to be the #CleanBeauty ambassador for Whole Foods Market Northern California this spring, in honor of their Beauty Week sale!
From March 21 to 27, all makeup, facial care, hair care, nail polish and makeup brushes will be 25% off. Mark your calendars now because you don’t want to miss it! The sale includes products from Alba, Dr. Hauschka, evanhealy, Mineral Fusion, MyChelle, Trilogy and more. It’s a great time to take advantage of some significant savings on some great natural beauty brands.
About Whole Foods’ and Natural Beauty
Being totally transparent, I didn’t start paying attention to what goes in my beauty products until the past six months. I was excited to learn that Whole Foods Market is as mindful of what goes on our bodies as much as what goes in them. Did you know that Whole Foods bans more than 100 ingredients found in conventional body care products, including phthalates, microbeads, triclosan, BHT, and BHA? You can read more about their standards here. To maintain its natural beauty promise, Whole Foods Market created its own standards for organic labeling on personal care products, as there are no mandatory government standards for “organic” claims in the body care industry. Knowledge is power, so I encourage you to read the labels on the products you have at home to see what’s in them. Some claims may surprise you.
My Beauty Picks
Because I’ve been exploring more natural beauty options, it’s a thrill to have my Beauty Picks featured on shelf talkers in Whole Foods Market stores across the Sacramento region. Yes, if you go to a store right now, you’ll see my face and the products I love! Please take a selfie with them, and then read about them! If you have any questions about my picks or any other products, you’ll be happy to know that beauty specialists are on hand to help you with anything you need. Ask about ingredients, allergens, and even their favorite products.
The Full list
MyChelle Clear Skin Spot Treatment
This is my go-to for blemishes that appear out of nowhere, and usually before I have a big event. I apply a thin layer at night and in the morning, it’s dramatically reduced or gone!
I have been using Derma-E cleansers for months. I love how they smell, feel and rinse off. For dry skin cycles, I love the Hydrating Cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid. Right now, I’m loving the Even Tone Brightening Cleanser to keep my skin radiant.
Juice Beauty Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 30
I have combination skin and I get really oily by the end of the day. This moisturizer controls my oil and also gives me great sun protection.
Acure Mega Moisture
Treat yourself (and your tresses) with Mega Moisture. It’s ultra-hydrating and gives my hair a nice sheen.
Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Cream
When my skin needs calming, I use this cream. It’s lightly scented and gentle, but rich enough to replenish and balance my skin.
Andalou Naturals Face Masks
These are great for home and for travel. I use at least one mask a week and keep them on hand to give to my girlfriends, too!
Pacifica Rainbow Crystals Liquid Mineral Strobe Cream
This highlighter gives me life! I like to use it on my face and on my decollete on special occasions.
Zuzu Luxe Lipgloss in Mischief
I’m a lipstick lady, but I love lip gloss for a fresh and pretty look in spring! Mischief is a color that looks good on all skin tones.
I am so excited for the Beauty Week sale, and even more excited for you to take advantage of the great deals to be had.
In addition to the sale period, on Friday, March 23, stores will offer limited edition beauty bags for $20/each. Curated by the Whole Foods Market beauty team, each bag contains favorites valued at over $100! In case you were wondering, yes, I plan to get my hands on one of them, and I’ll share on Instagram on Friday. I would love to see what you get, too!
Thank you for reading and I can’t wait to see what you pick up!

After receiving the Straight Up at Drybar in Sacramento
I am so lucky to have so many options when it comes to styling my hair. Since I gave up the creamy crack in 2011, I have had the best of both worlds: curly and straight, but the curls reigned supreme. What was once my signature look now only gets play on weekends and on wash days? I love wearing my hair straight and it’s so nice to have places like Drybar around that can get me in and out in a flash. It doesn’t take me a long time to blow dry and style my hair (under an hour), but it’s nice to have someone else do it, plus, I can get some other things done while I’m in the chair, and rest my biceps, too.
I can’t lie, I have been pleasantly surprised at how easy it has been to maintain my blowouts over the past several weeks. I thought I’d share my tips in case you were looking to wear your hair curly to straight, or want some general advice on how to extend your blowout since they are such a nice treat from time to time!
I DEEP CONDITION IN BETWEEN BLOWOUTS
I believe overall hair health is important. I haven’t dabbled in supplements, but I do make sure to take extra care when it comes to conditioning my hair. I’m just going to dub myself as a crazy lady when it comes to conditioning. Lately, I can’t get enough of the Kristin Ess Reconstructive Moisture Mask and Acure Deep Root Moisture Mask. If I’m in a rush, I leave it in my hair while I’m in the shower and rinse it out toward the end of my shower. If I have more time, I make it an affair. I leave the conditioner on, place a plastic cap on my head, add my bonnet attachment to my blowdryer, and sit and watch my favorite show while the product penetrates into my strands with the heat. It has made a huge difference, so much so that my stylist commented on my hair’s condition! My other favorite hair mask is the Mudslide by Drybar.
I ask for the lightest hairspray after my blowout
Adding too much or too heavy of a product on my freshly styled hair can instantly kill the longevity of the blowout. I may have big hair when it’s curly, but my strands are very fine. Using the lightest spray (at Drybar it’s Money Maker) sets the swoops of my blowout and by pulling it back at bedtime in a clip (I am really lazy with the scarf thing), it is able to stay bouncy for a few days.
I don’t load up on products…but I do use Dry Shampoo + Conditioner
I have stretched a blowout over a seven day period by not using too many products. Don’t get me wrong, by Day 7 I may be wearing my hair in a ponytail, but as I mentioned above, the key is not to weigh down your hair with products. If you’re not washing your hair and just loading up on hairspray, serums, and oils, you’re causing a lot of buildup. When I feel like I need a refresher, I love dry conditioner. Really. It revives my hair by adding a bit of body and moisture without the weight. Detox by Drybar in Lush Scent is my favorite.
I use less heat on my hair until Day 3
Getting it good and straight when it’s in the blowdry phase is key to how flat my hair is going to lay and it starts by styling small sections of hair at a time. Once my hair is blow dried and flat ironed, I really try not to flat iron my hair more after the initial styling. It causes additional damage that makes my hair weak and dull. By day 3, some of my swoops have fallen and I may use my curling wand to add some waves to my hair. Waves and curls always hold better to hair that’s a little “dirty.”
I protect my hair from moisture
As a naturally curly haired lady, any kind of moisture, whether it’s rain water, humidity or sweat from exercise, poses a threat to my straight style! For real. And I know you know because of the response to this caption on Instagram. To overcome this hurdle, I use a Gymwrap if I am engaging in any physical activity. It was created by Nicole Ari Parker and it is seriously the only thing that has worked for me. Try it!

Y’all! I didn’t mean to have such a gap in blogging, especially after that mic drop of my last post regarding my mom’s birthday. Life has been a little bit crazy since, especially with preparations for Alt Summit! I cannot believe it is less than a week away. If you’ve been around here for a while then you know that I went last year (you can check out my recap here), and it really changed the way I looked at and thought about my business! I returned home from Alt ready to do things I had only talked about doing (for years) and did them quickly, too.
Now that I’m in the pre-Alt homestretch, I took a little time to think about why I’m so excited to return this year, and I decided to share that with you.
The Energy All Around
If you’ve been to a blog conference, then you’ll understand the silent humm of energy that fills a space. However, I believe that Alt takes it to another level. Even if you attended Alt, not a creative at all, but just surrounded by others, you’d feel the vibe. It would excite and entice you. It would spark your curiosity. They say that a smile is contagious. OK, well if you’re surrounded by hundreds of them, chances are you’re going to crack one too. Maybe a laugh as well? I’m just about out of creative energy juice from last year’s Alt, so I’m excited to refill my cup!
The Change of Scenery
“But, Kachet, you travel all of the time.” Well, if you look at last year’s travel calendar, I am behind:), but for realsies, I am looking forward to it. The change of scenery goes beyond picturesque Palm Springs and the colorful Saguaro Hotel. Alt is different. I’m looking forward to the change of scenery amongst other bloggers and other creatives from different parts of the country, in a really cool spot…with some really good food.
I made so many great friends at Alt Summit last year and I am looking forward to reuniting with them. Some I’ve kept in close contact with and others I’ve kept tabs on through social media. I am also excited to make new friends and create some great connections with people that I can collaborate with this year. There’s a lot to go around; it’s all about who you spend your time with. I’m also looking forward to getting to know some of the Alt sponsors better. A lot of them are different than last year and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about their brands and what they are looking to get out of Alt. It would be great to connect with some that align with not only my values but also with yours (since I’ll be creating content for you to enjoy).
The Challenge of Being a Speaker
I kept a close watch on my inbox when Alt announced that speaker applications were open. It took me a while to finalize my application but I made myself apply. I told myself I had a chance and I reinforced that fact by telling myself, I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. So, I applied and a couple of months went by and guess what? I got an email reply to my initial pitch email, that opened by saying, “Hi Kachet. Congratulations! You’ve been selected as a speaker for Alt Summit 2018, happening February 26th-28th in Palm Springs, California.” The first thing I thought was, “Well, I’ll be damned.” They ACTUALLY chose me! Ha! Now, I have to get myself together and SPEAK. I’m really proud of the fact that I did something that was a little bit scary, and that I’m actually following through with it. My anxiety has been higher than usual these past few months over life in general, and what seemed to be weeks and weeks away is now less than one. By this time next week, my session will be over and I’ll be there to enjoy the rest of the conference. In case you’re wondering, YES, I’m nervous, but I know that I’ll deliver, and I’m happy to be speaking with Amy, whom I met at last year’s conference. It’s gonna be good!
A reason to wear more than yoga pants every day
Look, I really love dressing up, but I really hate it too. I’ve defaulted to a uniform lately: my favorite INC leggings, black or light blue skinny jeans, an oversized sweater, and boots.
Alt will force me to wear some fun outfits and share some stylish flair that’s been a little bit dormant. The weather in Palm Springs only helps. It’ll be low 70’s and sunshine, baby!
Follow along on Instagram for ALL of the scoop next week. I will be going live many times during the event.
