After DC’s Wonder Woman, The CW’s Supergirl and more recently Marvel’s Captain Marvel became huge successes, there is no denying that audiences want to see more stories of female empowerment. While these examples are aimed at an older demographic, Warner Bros. Animation is targeting a younger generation with the reboot of DC Super Hero Girls. The relaunched series by the Emmy-winning Lauren Faust recently premiered with DC Super Hero Girls: Sweet Justice and currently has new episodes airing every week on Cartoon Network. Bringing new musical life to the beloved characters of Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Bumbebee and Supergirl is composer Michael Gatt. You may have heard Gatt’s work on Syfy’s fan favorite Blood Drive, for which he garnered recognition for his eclectic score. In the below exclusive interview Michael discusses everything from the character’s signature sounds to scoring the series like a film.
-Did you ever go back and listen to the themes from the original Wonder Woman series or recent film to get inspiration for the Wonder Woman character in DC Super Hero Girls?
The show is such a fresh take on these characters, the goal was to do the same with the score. For Wonder Woman, the idea was to play in to her Amazonian Princess heritage as a warrior as well as royalty. Additionally, in the movie we find out that Diana is “only” 317 years old! Thus for her scenes, we are often leaning into ancient instruments like the Shofar, Duduk, large drums and often use high flute to sting her moments and play her theme. There are no direct references to existing musical takes on her character with the exception that the eminently talented Rupert Gregson Williams also used Duduk in the Gal Gadot Wonder Woman film.
-The same for The CW’s Supergirl. Do you ever watch that show just to listen to the score and see how the other composers are scoring these same characters?
Kara/Supergirl has a ton of attitude in the show, a rebel and a rocker, so she is scored with rock, pop punk vibe…loud guitars, drums and bass. In the Sweet Justice movie she even plays a flying V guitar…Again no reference to existing scores for her.
-You are currently scoring the DC Super Hero Girls series and you also scored the film DC Super Hero Girls: Sweet Justice. Musically, did you approach these two projects differently even though on is a tv show and the other is a film?
There was a lot of collaboration between myself and Lauren, Jenn and other creatives in service of Lauren’s overall vision for the show and the score. Along with each character having their own theme, they also have their own signature instrumentation and genre. We would spot a scene or just talk about the characters and throw out ideas for how to approach them. Then I would send back music and we would start again, with new ideas or revisions, repeating the process until we felt like we had it just right.
This actually started with The Late Batsby, a theatrical short that played in front of the Teen Titans Go To The Movies film. In it we hear what has become Batgirl’s signature 60’s surf band sound, with big brass stabs and lots of fun guitar. For Bumble Bee we do 8 Bit Electronica, Zatanna, EDM and so on.
-Is there some sort of DC guidebook that everyone who works on DC projects shares, so the brand stays cohesive?
I don’t personally know of any guidebook, with that said, my experience has been everyone involved with the show is extremely well versed in all the back stories and crossovers of the DC Universe canon. Having been a longtime fan of DC comics before working on the show, I thought I was already pretty knowledgeable, yet every time I go to an episode spotting session, I learn something new.
-Did you have any input on the opening credit song of DC Super Hero Girls?
I did not have any input on the opening credit song, that said, I love it!
Kay, Michelle and Dan knocked it out of the park.
I have historically always scored the main title for any film or series I do the underscore on, so I was really keen to hear what the show decided on for the opening credit.
I was an instant fan when I heard the track.
-In the episode “Meet the Cheetah” there is everything from synths to what sounds like an African flute. What is that Amazon sounding instrument that is the cheetah’s theme? Is it ever hard to transition these very different sounding instruments/tones without it being to jarring?
I loved that episode and it’s a great example of how each episode of the show is like a standalone film. While I’m always leaning into the themes and sounds that we’ve established for the show, unlike most serial television scores there is very little or no reuse of score from one episode to the next, each one is a blank page. The Cheetah episode is a great example, calling for everything from haunted horror, to exotic world instrumentation and hero moments in their individual themes. For example, during the scene when the score is playing up Cheetah on the hunt and Bumblebee has her “hero time!” moment, the score breaks into her signature 8 bit electronic sound.
As for the instrument you asked about, when Barbi is inside her Dad’s trophy room, I leaned into all kinds of world instruments like the Dundun, Dholak and there is a wood flute sting as well which gets revisited throughout the episode.
-DC Super Hero Girls is aimed at a younger demographic. Does this affect your score at all?
The show is very smart, funny and for me tracks across all demographics.
I score the show like a film…sometimes we are playing things for comedic purposes, like a soap opera esque cue, but overall we stay in a very cinematic space, with epic fight music and dramatic/emotional underscore that is very sincere for heartfelt moments. As well, I do plenty of “source” music for the show, music that sounds like a song but is actually score to picture.
Speaking of songs, I also get awesome opportunities to write songs with Lauren at certain points in the series. Such as the “Greatest Team” song that appears in the Sweet Justice movie. It comes on the radio while Babs is reeling from what seems like the dissolution of the team. She goes on to sing along with track and really fun.
-Each of the character’s themes are very different. Do you have a favorite?
It’s funny, I have a new favorite each week, I really do enjoy them all. They’re so well written and the character design and art direction are just amazing and then there’s the incredible voice acting. Everyone on this show just brings it, so it’s hard not to just be totally into whatever characters I’m currently scoring. The same goes for the score in each episode. For the #HateTriangle episode there is a demonic choir underneath Star Sapphire, her character is already so outrageous, scoring her that way was super fun and makes me laugh every time, conversely I had a lot of fun scoring Hal portraying another version of himself in the same episode. Cut to the #Beeline episode, which is all about Bumblebee and playing up her 8 bit sound….that said, in that same episode, I got to score a villain role call, a band Kara was seeing at a club, some chill music Z was listening to while reading, Jess picketing a restaurant, and even the music coming from inside the restaurant and on and on making for an extremely rewarding experience. Then there’s #BurritoBucket which is all about Batgirl and her surf music sound/theme only in this episode we also went full mariachi with her sound as she is trying to balance being a super hero with keeping her job at the Burrito Bucket restaurant.
I only ever watched the first film in The Substitute series and it had been a few years since then; I thought now seemed like a good time to watch all of them and do a piece on the franchise.
So take out your textbooks and and turn to page one; school is now in session and remember no copying as there will be a test later…

Plot: Inner-city Miami schoolteacher Jane Hetzko (Diane Venora) gets her knee broken when she stands up to the school’s gang leader, Juan Lacas (Marc Anthony). Her boyfriend, mercenary combat specialist Jonathan Shale (Tom Berenger), goes undercover as a substitute teacher to take down the punk, but soon discovers that Lacas is merely an underling for the real criminal mastermind. Assembling the team from his last jungle raid, led by his right-hand man, Joey Six (Raymond Cruz), Shale declares war.
I always thought The Substitute could have been a spin-off from the Sniper series with Tom Berenger’s Beckett returning home to find out his local school has been over taken by drug dealers and criminals. As it happens it isn’t anything to do with Sniper and Tom Berenger plays Jonathan Shale, a mercenary who goes undercover at a school after his woman is attacked. Berenger always has a military bearing on screen so he is perfectly cast as the mercenary turned “teacher” Shale.
The first of 4 movies, this is the only one to star Berenger with Treat Williams taking over the sequels. The 90’s had other movies like this with the likes of Dangerous Minds where students from the wrong side of tracks are shown they can live a better life and that crime isn’t always the only option.
The Substitute is pure 90’s action movie greatness and although it may stretch credibility it is still an awesome action thriller with Berenger at his badass best and Marc Anthony suitably evil as the student from Hell Juan Lucas.
This is a minor spoiler too so if you haven’t seen the movie before then read no further.
It was refreshing to see Ernie Hudson play a rare villain as the corrupt high school principal as he’s always been one of my favourite underappreciated actors. The Substitute has a great supporting cast too including William Forsythe as Shale’s former team mate who may or may not be nuts. It’s a bit of a who’s who of 90’s action cinema as we have Raymond Cruz and Luis Guzmán who are part of Shale’s crew and when they all come together to take down the bad guys at the end it’s incredibly satisfying and genuinely explosive.
Diane Venora plays Shale’s girlfriend Jane and is a very appealing character; he is strong yet vulnerable and funny too coming across as one of the most believable characters.
It has an awesome 90’s hip hop soundtrack too including Guerilla Funk by Paris which was one of my jams growing up.
It isn’t short on action with Shale taking on Lucas and his goons throughout so we get fights and shoot-outs at regular intervals; a scene in the library is one of the stand out moments. My main question while viewing was are schools in America really like this? If so then they have a serious fucking problem but I imagine it’s taking a few liberties in terms of realism; my biggest threat in school was wondering if I had too much ketchup on my roll and sausage. Anyway, it still keeps the tension up and moves along at a good pace so you’re never bored for a second.
I was slightly disappointed that at no point do Shale or his men say “Class dismissed!” or “the PTA has disbanded, motherfucker” which feels like a missed opportunity.
Overall, The Substitute is classic 90’s action with Tom Berenger doing what he does best, plenty of tension, action and a satisfying finale. If you haven’t seen it then it’s time to register for class.
The Substitute 2: School’s Out (1998)

Plot: A mercenary with a chip on his shoulder, Karl Thomasson (Treat Williams) poses as a teacher at an inner-city school to exact revenge on the gang members who murdered his brother. As Thomasson investigates the killing and tries to keep his estranged niece, Anya (Susan Pratt), safe, he begins to realize how dysfunctional and violent the urban school environment has become. Even with support from fellow soldier Joey Six (Angel David), Thomasson is seriously outnumbered as he seeks vengeance.
So now we move on to the Treat Williams years and the second Substitute movie subtitled School’s Out which is practically the same story as the original but it lacks the swearing and violence (for the most part) of the first film. Where the first movie had an impressive cast the only recognizable faces in this one are Williams, Guru and BD Wong and it’s sadly inferior in every way.
I do like watching Treat Williams on screen but I find that he has too friendly a face to be a believable mercenary badass and he’s no substitute (ho ho) for Tom Berenger. I prefer him in the latter two movies though and his character becomes more interesting as it progresses.
Spoiler warning again so if you haven’t seen the movie then stop reading now.
BD Wong is one of my favourite actors and it was great to see him shine in Gotham as Hugo Strange but in The Substitute 2 we get to see him as another villain and he’s particularly nasty too; one scene has him beating up a woman interrogating her for information then shooting her in cold blood which was the toughest scene of the movie. He was one of the best things about it and he has a relatively satisfying fight with Williams for the finale. We also have Gangstarr rapper Guru (RIP) who is one of the main bad guys and was also pretty mean especially when he is beating a guy with a baseball bat.
This movie really lacks the exciting action scenes of the first entry and feels lower budget and sadly rather forgettable. We don’t really get to know any of the students as well this time around so we never really care what happens; if someone dies we then have to go to IMBD to see who the character was…
What this has in its favour is a shorter runtime (90 minutes) so it moves quickly and has a decent payoff at the end. Treat Williams is a sympathetic enough lead as he searches for his brother’s killer and tries to bond with his niece but it just lacks the same impact as the original movie.
Overall, The Substitute 2: School’s Out has its moments and a fun villain in BD Wong but it lacks the larger action scenes of the first entry and is unfortunately not all that memorable.

Plot: Mercenary Karl Thomasson (Treat Williams) comes to Long Island to pass along a medal to his dead friend’s daughter, college English teacher Nicole Stewart (Rebecca Staab). When Nicole is attacked by student football players who are afraid she might fail them, Karl acts as her substitute teacher to discover who was behind the beating. Investigating the campus, he learns that football coach Bill Braden (Scott Wilkinson) is giving his team steroids and will stop at nothing to achieve success.
The third entry in the series is easily Treat Williams’ best and real step up after the average second movie. This ups the nudity, swearing and violence quotient which as we all know makes for a better action flick. Williams has some good old fashioned one-liners too but once gain no one says “class dismissed!” What’s wrong with you people?!?!
This time Karl (Williams) goes undercover at a college after his friend’s daughter who is also a professor at the school is attacked. There are really only 2 scenes set in the classroom that feature Karl as the rest of the movie has him and his crew beating up and taking out local criminals and mobsters.
It’s really just an excuse for an anti-steroids message as three bullying jock assholes think because they play football the rules don’t apply to them due to their corrupt drug dealing coach.
The action in this one is pretty hard R with one scene having Karl sticking a knife through the bottom of someone’s chin and there is no shortage of fight scenes either. Karl is at his angriest in this movie and during the finale he repeatedly drives a car into the bad guy’s legs just to make sure he won’t be a problem in the future.
We are also introduced to Claudia Christian’s hard ass merc who has to pretend she’s an air head waitress in a bar as she tries to get more info on local criminal Tony who is attached to the mob. I used to have such a crush on Claudia in the 90’s especially when I first saw her in Arena. This movie also has a wet t-shirt contest in it which is another point in its favour.
Overall, The Substitute 3 remains Treat William’s best entry with a decent bodycount, regular fight scenes and good pace however, the 4th movie is also entertaining so let’s get into that now.

Plot: In order to uncover a white supremacist group at a Southern military academy, former commando Karl Thomasson (Treat Williams) joins the faculty of the school. As Thomasson determines which cadets are involved in the racist organization, he falls for the beautiful Jenny (Angie Everhart), who also works at the academy. When Thomasson realizes that the school’s violent racist streak extends to its administration, the tough teacher is forced to take action.
So now we reach the end of the series and my biggest question remains is anyone even still reading this? Whatever, I’ll keep going…
You may think the fourth entry of a franchise may be terrible but this is actually pretty decent mostly because of the cast. Treat Williams returns for the last time as the amiable Karl Thomasson but now he faces off against the best villain of his trilogy with Patrick Kilpatrick (Death Warrant) playing a deranged neo Nazi at a military school who is polluting his students minds with hate.
Thomasson gets real pissed in one scene as he takes on one of his redneck students in class and frankly beats the shit out of him after he spouts some racist nonsense. Although released in 2001 the story is still very relevant in today’s climate which adds to the film’s tension.
It doesn’t have the budget or set-pieces of the third movie so it’s not quite as good but Kilpatrick never fails to play a convincing villain and is menacing as Hell any time he is on screen with that piercing gaze of his.
Angie Everheart also co-stars and her topless scene is good enough reason to tune in; we also have the underrated Bill Nunn (RIP) and Simon Rhee who also choreographed the fight scenes.
There is no shortage of action even if it is smaller in scale than previous entries and the final fight between Williams and Rhee is pretty satisfying.
Overall, I’m bored talking about this series now so I’ll just say if you enjoy the other Treat Williams entries then this is an adequate finale with Patrick Kilpatrick as the scene stealing villain and a few interesting fight scenes.

I think it would have been cool if we had a Substitute movie with both Berenger and Williams but sadly it was never meant to be. So I’ll just finish up by saying class dismissed… was that so hard?
I feel like this movie doesn’t get enough praise from people and I consider Eliminators one of Scott Adkins’ most entertaining films.
Eliminators tells the story of a former U.S. federal agent (Scott Adkins) who must abandon his witness protection program and come out of hiding when his London home is invaded. Now, he has to evade a world-class assassin (Wade Barrett AKA Stu Bennett) and save his daughter’s life.
It’s worth watching for the fight scenes alone and the beatdowns between Adkins and Bennett are priceless with Bennett’s assassin Bishop a worthy opponent to Adkin’s skilled ex- federal agent Thomas. Bishop is an absolute beast in this movie towering over Thomas during the fights as they punch and kick each other in brutal fashion where you get the feeling there is a genuine fight for survival.
This tension keeps the plot moving as Thomas tries to evade Bishop, the cops and anyone else who gets in his way as he attempts to save his daughter from her embittered grandfather (James Cosmo) who wants Thomas dead as he blames him for his daughter’s death. You can see the granfather’s point and you can never go wrong with the legendary James Cosmo in the role. He isn’t a total monster and you almost empathize with him giving the movie a little more depth than you’d maybe expect.
It’s not just Bishop Thomas has to contend with as there are fight scenes every few minutes with some original locations with one highlight being Adkins taking on two goons in a cable car over London.
Speaking of which Eliminators also has a nice sense of style making London look rather glamorous which is a pleasant change.
Eliminators is definitely more of an under the radar Adkins film that may not have the same fanbase as the Boyka movies but if you haven’t seen it then give it a watch as it is packed with action and Stu Bennett/Wade Barrett is a really entertaining villain.
A new Dante Lam film is always something to celebrate and his latest action epic is The Rescue which is described as an $80M thriller about a sea rescue during a typhoon. The movie stars Eddie Peng and is set for release in 2020.
As announced earlier this week, one of the world’s top stunt coordinators, Emmy-winning Shauna Duggins has signed on to helm her directorial debut in Guardian, the gritty action drama written by The Temp Agency scribe Cory Byam.
The move marks the latest bookmark for Duggins after became the first female stunt professional to win an Emmy in 2018 for her work on Netflix’s GLOW. Her stunt credits include a wide-range of Hollywood film & T.V. hits like McG’s Charlie’s Angels, HBO’S Game Of Thrones and Universal’s Fast/Furious franchise.
In the vein of The Professional and Man on Fire, Guardian tells the multi-layered story of a top assassin who becomes the reluctant guardian for the son of the last man he killed – entangling himself in a mob power struggle and an unexpected crisis of conscience.
Voltage Pictures, whose CEO and Academy Award winning producer Nicolas Chartier (The Hurt Locker) broke the news for the trades a few days ago, is joining Wonderland Sound & Vision with McG and Mary Viola producing.
Dominic Rustam will also produce for Voltage whose Jonathan Decker will exec produce with Wonderland’s Steven Bello, alongside Duggins’ long-time collaborator Brian Machleit, who will take an active role on set.
Machleit brings a wealth of experience to any set, having served as stunt coordinator on several Academy Award-winning and box office successes such as The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, Avatar, The Aviator and Training Day.
“My partner Brian and I are excited to take our collaboration with McG to the next level on Guardian, a film that explores the unlikely bond between an assassin and the child he’s grudgingly sworn to protect through a journey jam packed with groundbreaking action and heart wrenching emotion,” said Duggins. “We couldn’t be happier to be working with the prolific team of Voltage and Wonderland.”

Voltage and Wonderland previously partnered on last year’s body positive romantic-comedy, I Feel Pretty, starring Amy Schumer which grossed $100m at the worldwide box office.

Debuting film director Joe Zanetti is stepping into the lion’s den with his feature, the conspiracy thriller Killbird, being officially selected for official competition at the Dances With Films Festival. The movie will screen on June 23 at 12:30 p.m. at the iconic Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California. Killbird is a conspiracy thriller with an intriguing political twist that seems so real and possible. “It’s a film that gives the
viewer a punch to the gut,” says director, co-writer and coproducer, Joe Zanetti. “It’s meant to shock; it’s meant to raise questions – what is truth? Where is individual agency in our times, and who can we trust?”
Elysia Rotaru (Arrow, Supernatural), Stephen Lobo (Continuum, Smallville), Aaron Douglas (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Imposters, Battlestar Galactica) and Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica, Man of Steel) star.
In search of help on a birdwatching trip gone wrong, Taylor Crane (Elysia Rotaru) comes across a remote cabin where she meets Riad Bishara (Stephen Lobo), a recluse supposedly on the run from the CIA. Paranoid and seemingly unstable, Riad soon concludes that Taylor is a government agent and holds her captive. As she struggles to escape, Taylor soon comes across a prisoner in the cabin and uncovers what appears to be a deadly cat and mouse game between U.S. government agencies. Likewise, Riad learns that she may well be working against him as a CIA plant. Their lives depend on uncovering the truth about one another before it is too late.
Based out of Los Angeles, Joe Zanetti is thrilled to bring his first feature film, Killbird, to the public. Zanetti has produced and directed a number of critically acclaimed short films, including The Chase
and The Slumber Party, which showcased at the Atlantic Film Festival. He was also selected for the JETS program at EFM in 2018 and a Praxis Centre Screenwriting Lab in 2010 and has worked as a
Production Executive at East of Doheny and Aurora Productions. He managed film slates and supervised production on the PBS documentary Grey Gardens: From East Hampton to Broadway and has a number of feature films in development, including Lex Talionis (Samaco Films & Synergetic Distribution), HAX and Relapse (Earth Orbit Productions & Frozen Fish Productions). When he is not producing film, Zanetti produces video games. He has worked with companies such as Scopely, Capcom, Ubisoft and Warner Brothers on next-gen products, including the hit Warner Bros title “Batman: Arkham Origins” and “Star Trek: Fleet Command”.
“As a proud independent filmmaker, I am so thrilled to premiere Killbird at Dances With Films,” Zanetti says of his film’s inclusion in the festival’s program. “I worked with such a dedicated Canadian cast and crew, who were willing to jump on my crazy rollercoaster ride to create an ambitious conspiracy thriller on such a low budget. Hollow Point is the latest actioner from director Daniel Zirilli and stars Luke Goss, Juju Chan, Jay Mohr, Michael Pare and Bill Duke. It is produced by Dilan Jay who is apparently the 1st Sri Lankan-American film producer and lead actor to hit Hollywood.
Dilan’s lead role in Hollow Point makes him the first Indian/Sri Lankan to star in an American action film. Hollow Point is currently being distributed world wide and is written by Chad & Evan Law and Daniel Zirilli.
Plot: When his wife and daughter are senselessly murdered a grieving man finds himself caught up in a war between a group of charismatic vigilantes and the crime that infests their city.
