Founded in 2013, Style Story is Australia’s Korean Beauty Store – an online boutique based in Brisbane, Australia. The store was founded with the goal of showcasing the best and most innovative K-beauty products to Australians, and helping Aussie beauty lovers to discover new beauty products unlike those available in Australia.
Pore perfecting Korean beauty label “JJ Young” by global powerhouse Caolion was recently featured in Slim Magazine.
JJ Young by Caolion Lab Pore Perfecting Multi Cream was featured as a 3-in-1 pore perfecting Korean beauty product.
Slim Magazine’s take:
“If you’re looking to save time with your skincare regime, this pore perfecting multi cream might be the answer. Korean beauty brand JJ Young has launched a handy three-in-one essence, toner and moisturiser that also minimises redness and targets uneven skin tone. The lightweight formula provides intense nourishment to instantly calm irritated skin and minimise any redness but doesn’t clog pores.”
JJ Young’s lightweight formula is perfect the Australian climate, hydrating and calming irritated skin without blocking pores.
The formula skips out on chemical preservatives, parabens, alcohol or testing on animals.
Slim Magazine noted:
“It contains an amino-acid complex that promotes the skin’s elasticity and tiny capsules that break apart when spread in. Star ingredients including Lavandula angustifolia (English Lavender) water – used to treat and prevent acne thanks to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, arginine – an amino acid with antioxidant properties; and aloe vera leaf juice, which soothes skin and serves as an anti-inflammatory.”

COSMO BEAUTY EXPO REPORT
STYLE STORY recently attended the Cosmo Beauty Expo 2019 held at COEX in Seoul, Korea.
We had an absolute ball discovering some of Korea’s emerging K-Beauty trends, as well as a huge range of exciting new skincare products, ingredients and technologies.
THE LATEST IN KOREAN BEAUTY
Vegan and organic skincare are making a massive impact this year, and the push towards smaller batch, handmade items is continuing. We saw hand-made face soaps, hair masks, body soaps and more, as well as plenty more new hair care and body care brands.
The soap-craze is continuing with the new breed of facial soaps suitable for a wide range of skin types. In addition to soothing, natural and even cruelty-free formulas, some of the latest Korean soapsdon’t change shape after use, others come in their own hygienic foaming nets (to contain any mess and help store them hygienically) and most of them can even be broken into smaller pieces so you only use a little at a time!
Also attending this year’s Expo were companies specialising in cosmetic packaging, accessories (like foundation sponges and makeup brushes), cosmetic production companies, home-spa equipment and more!
You may have already seen them on our Instagram stories, but we’re dying to share some of our favourite new finds from the Cosmo Beauty Expo with you!
UP-AND-COMING KOREAN BEAUTY INGREDIENTS
As always with K-Beauty, there were plenty of innovative new ingredients and technologies, including waffle textured face masks, neo-bubble face oil technology, natural aroma oils and room sprays and sheet masks made for the butt!!
NEW KOREAN BRANDS AND PRODUCTS
Some of our favourites from this year’s expo were:
“Neo Bubble” – an oil formula containing tiny capsules that dissolve on the skin.
“Butt Mask” – a sheet mask for the butt claiming to firm, lift and reinvigorate your butt skin. Would you? Could you? On the butt?!
Commleaf – one of our favourite new brands, this 100% cruelty-free brand has been making waves in the international beauty community thanks to its luxurious packaging and natural formulas brimming with K-Beauty’s favourite ingredients. With EWG certification for its plant extracts, Commleaf creates products using ingredients of natural origin that give strength to exhausted skin. Look out for:
Commleaf Rose Sleeping Mask – an ultra-hydrating overnight mask infused with 75% rose water and rose petals to replenish lost moisture throughout the day. It’s a serum-like mask that absorbs into the skin overnight while you sleep to provide your with a glow by morning. The beautiful formula actually contains real rose petals, which are beautifully absorbed upon touching your skin
Commleaf Skin Relief Soothing Toner – this skin soothing toner comes in a gorgeous glass jar that looks more like a piece of art than a cosmetic container. Infused with star ingredients centella asiatica, green tea and aloe vera it provides pore care, hydration and exfoliation for oily, acne-prone skin.
What trend are you most excited about?
STYLE STORY – Your Style, Your Story
Popsugar Social Coordinator Charisandra Perez raved about her holy grail moisturiser, gushing:
“My all-time, never-fails-me moisturiser is Belief’s The True Cream Aqua Bomb ($60). It was recommended to me by a makeup artist when I told her my woes about my weird combination skin — dry T-zone and oily cheeks — and she immediately handed me this glorious product. I haven’t used anything as hydrating or cooling since. If I could, I’d marry it because no man can ever fix as many of my problems as this has.”
WHY IT’S A CULT FAV
This ultra lightweight, oil-free gel cream is perfect for cooling and moisturising skin while also providing intensive hydration. Belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb drowns skin in moisture, with clinical tests showing a 70% increase in skin’s hydration levels after use.
Made with a blend of apothecary herbs, it is designed to correct dry skin, visible pores and uneven skin texture. It also helps to neutralize skin-damaging free radicals and improve elasticity
We love it for normal, oily and combination skin types.
Star ingredient Lady’s Mantle is an antioxidant-rich herb with pore-minimising benefits that helps to remove free radicals from the skin and aids skin turnaround. Malachite assists in neutralizing free radical activity in the skin. plantin acts like a moisturising seal on the skin’s barrier and Oat Husk attracts moisture to the skin.
The formula is free from parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, petrolatum, synthetic preservatives, dyes, fragrances, animal origin ingredients and phthalates.
You might not have heard of Dr Ceuracle but chances are you’ll know the company by its former name Lee Gee Haam or LJH cosmetics.

Backed by leading dermatologists, the brand has gone onto become a cult favourite, perhaps best-known for its sellout “LJH Tea Tree Essence Oil”.
ABOUT DR CEURACLE

K-BEAUTY’S LATEST OBSESSION – TRUFFLES
K-Beauty’s latest obsession is so luxe it has to be tried to be believed.
Truffles (and white truffles in particular) are popping up all over Korea’s latest crop of luxury skincare products. But do you need them in your routine?
In case you need additional prodding, here’s why the answer is a resounding “yes!”
Why are truffles so expensive
Found in the Italian region of Piedmont in Northern Italy, white truffles (or Trifola d’Alba Madonna as they are known in Italian) are locally known as ‘diamonds in the ground’. The rarest in the world, these truffles cost a fortune (in the region of $10,000 to $15,000 AUD for less than half a kilo) because they are almost impossible to cultivate. Not only are they hard to find, they’re also becoming increasingly harder to grow. They only stay in season from late October through December but global warming has made fewer white truffles available each year, making them a true rarity.
What makes white truffle so great for the skin?
The reason white truffles are so in demand in skincare is thanks a special enzyme called “Superoxide Dismutase” which helps to repair damaged skin, while preventing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles at the same time. In skincare products, white truffles serve as an anti-inflammatory and anti-aging agent.
Considered a ‘super food’ for skin, they are filled with numerous minerals and vitamins. Its rich Vitamin C content makes white truffle a powerful brightening ingredient, as does Vitamin B12, which targets dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
White truffle also gives a healthier complexion by repairing dry, itchy, and irritated patches.
d’Alba Peptide No-Sebum Mild Gel Cleanser is perfect for those with oily skin looking for anti-aging products that won’t cause breakouts. This cleanser effectively yet gently removes impurities and dead skin cells, and help to maintain an optimal pH balance.
d’Alba Peptide No-Sebum Balancing Toner is a hypoallergenic BHA+ peptide complex that helps to reduce sebum production, improving skin cells turnover cycle and preventing problems created by waste accumulation.
d’Alba Peptide No-Sebum Repair Cream contains calamine powder that is effective for skin soothing, sebum control and nutrition. Highly concentrated antioxidant ingredients eliminate unnecessary oil, providing light anti-aging care.
One of the K-Beauty products we were most excited to see at this year’s K-Beauty Expo in Ilsan, Korea was d’Alba Piedmont’s cult First Spray Serum.
This serum went viral in Korea after it was revealed to be the secret behind many Korean airline hostesses’ beautifully hydrated complexions. According to the hype, it’s strong enough to combat dry cabin air, which is why Korean stewardess’ love spraying it throughout their long-haul flights, and upon landing to revive their skin.
SS Founder Lauren put it to the test in Seoul’s harsh winter weather to see whether it lives up to its claims!
“It’s a serum that comes in a handy misting bottle.
The packaging is a sturdy plastic that looks like glass and has a gold mist cap. It’s functional and beautiful and works to evenly distribute the mist in a nice stream.
First Spray Serum contains exactly 100ml of product, making it a great size to travel with. I keep it in my handbag for touch-ups throughout the day and there’s no problem packing it in cabin luggage when flying. This is a massive plus for me, as I like to fly with my favourite products but often end up having to decant them, which is time consuming and can get a bit messy.
My skin dries out terribly in flight and with the direct flight from Brisbane to Seoul taking 10 hours, that’s more than enough time for that dry cabin air to wreak havoc on my skin….!”
WHAT DOES IT CLAIM TO DO?
d’Alba claims that their First Spray Serum “helps to reduce wrinkles, brighten skin and supply moisture.”
“It’s made on a base of white truffles and lotus with avocado oil. Avocado oil is rich in fatty acids, making it an excellent natural moisturiser. Other nourishing oils include sunflower seed oil, vegetable oil and soybean oil.
Sodium Hyaluronate is another humectant, which attracts and binds water to the skin. Niacinamide is in the formula for brightening and targeting pigmentation, and the signature white truffle is designed to keep skin firm and elastic.
Another standout is adenosine – a yeast-derived ingredient that functions as a skin soothing and restoring agent.
The formula is thankfully free of parabens, mineral oils, silicones, synthetic dyes and synthetic fragrances, making it perfect for my sensitive skin.”
HOW DO YOU USE IT?
“The serum has a layer of oils sitting on top, so you need to shake it first to distribute the ingredients, and then you can mist away.
I usually hold the bottle around 20cm away from my face and give it a few good sprays.
Seoul’s winter is notoriously dry and harsh, particularly on my skin, so I’m pretty liberal at applying it throughout the day. I pack it in my bag and always have a bottle on my desk beside me as well.
You can use the serum as part of your skincare routine, but I have a few other serums I’m testing out at the moment, so I use this as a mist instead.”
WHAT RESULTS DID YOU NOTICE?
“Words can’t express my love for this mist!!
If a skincare product can cut through both my naturally dry, sensitive skin and Seoul’s winter and come out on top, that product is a winner in my books. I can totally see why all the Korean air hostesses are raving about it – it’s gone straight to the top of my favourites list as well and become an absolute staple in my routine.
If you’re looking for a product to really cut through air-conditioning, heating, dry cabin air or naturally dry skin and just leave your skin soft and glowing, I highly recommend this serum.
There are plenty of products claiming to give you glass skin on the market these days – this spray serum actually delivers.”
JJ Young Pore Charcoal Mud Sheet Mask Review
Charcoal beauty products have been massively hyped lately across store shelves and social media.
With research showing that charcoal draws out bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and micro-particles to the surface of skin, it seems almost too good to be true.
I put JJ Young by Caolion Lab’s Pore Charcoal Mud Sheet Mask to the test to see if its key ingredient – charcoal – really is worthy of the hype.
WORTH THE HYPE?
With all the benefits and hype surrounding charcoal, I’ve seen some pretty cringe-worthy results myself (particularly with DIY charcoal mask attempts).
Along with my previous experiences with face masks made from clay, charcoal, mud, or other base ingredients that incorporate an earthly goodness, most of them had me take three steps forward and two steps back.
So, it was with some hesitation that I agreed to try this mask.
RISK IT FOR THE BISCUIT
With my sensitive combination skin the “charcoal” genre of skincare is a bit of a “risk it for the biscuit” affair for me. Some of the charcoal masks I’ve previously tried were too coarse for my skin or just leeched it dry of what scarce, precious oils it had left, leaving it flaky or irritated
These experiences made my realise I needed a clay mask that: 1. won’t irritate my sensitive skin 2. won’t leech all precious oils out my dry-prone skin 3. effectively helps with my pore problems
WHAT IS IT?
A charcoal sheet mask.
JJ Young claims that its charcoal mask “is a unique 3D pore tightening mask that dries to firmly fit your exact face shape. Peel it off to remove sebum and impurities and deeply cleanse your pores. It’ll leave your face visibly firmer, smoother and more hydrated”.
It claims to:
Lift sagging skin
Keep skin hydrated all day
Thoroughly cleans skin, improve elasticity, and control sebum
The stand out ingredients are Volcanic Ash,Bentonite, Betaine, Kaolin, Charcoal, Taean mud.
I also like that it contains no parabens, alcohol or chemical preservatives
HOW DO YOU USE IT?
After your cleansing routine, apply the mask so that it is even and well pressed against your face.
The mask comes in two parts (top and bottom) to help with 3D coverage. The plastic film covering one side of the mask pieces might confuse you at first, but just peel them off. Luckily, JJ Young has pictures on the back to guide you.
Leave it on for around half an hour and then remove.
When you take it off, don’t rip it off like a dramatic rendition of the Phantom of the Opera, but gently peel it from the edges. There might be some residual charcoal mud on your face, so give your face a light wash with cold water.
The mask did it’s job of giving my skin a deep, nourishing cleanse without any casualties! I experienced no redness, no irritation, and no dryness!
To my surprise, my skin actually felt hydrated and supple after use, and my pores were less of an eyesore.
This mask gives your skin a good detox, and a good skin detox goes a long way in keeping pores clean and blackheads/acne to a minimum. JJ Young is also cruelty-free, which makes this mask a win!

VEGAN FRIENDLY BRANDS

Try:
Olivarrier – ALL of their products are dermatologist-tested, cruelty-free, EWG verified, vegan, and hypoallergenic with zero toxins. Perfect for those with sensitive skin.
Vegan Glow – 100% vegan and eco-friendly, the name itself is self-explanatory. While The Vegan Glow haven’t released many products yet, we guarantee they’ll become your certified go-to brand for vegan and environmentally clean products.

Benton avoids parabens, mineral oil, alcohol, benzophenone, chemical preservatives and steroids.
Purito – The brand’s new PURITO Centella Green range is free of harmful additives, animal ingredients and animal testing. Purito itself is a 100% cruelty-free brand that uses ingredients that are EWG Green level safe, toxin/chemical-free with packaging that is environmentally friendly.
Klairs – Since 2016, Klairs transitioned their entire brand to become both Vegan and eco-friendly, though they do have some honey-based products. All the Klairs products we sell at STYLE STORY are vegan.
iUNIK – Excluding their propolis and snail products, iUnik’s minimalist style skincare products use natural, plant-based ingredients to create their toners, serums, cleansers, etc.
