Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly is surprised not to see likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Subman Gill in the one-day for the tour of West Indies. Ganguly, in his early morning tweet, expressed surprise over the non-inclusion of the duo in the squad.

There are many in the squad who can play all formats ..surprised not to see shubman gill ..Rahane in the one day squad..

— Sourav Ganguly (@SGanguly99) July 24, 2019

Rahane wasn’t in the scheme of things for the one-day squad. It was last in January 2018 that he played an ODI on the tour of South Africa. He was later dropped from the squad and has not been in the frame to make a comeback.

Although he was tipped to be team India’s number four batsman last year by skipper Virat Kohli. Ambati Rayudu had replaced him in the squad for England tour but was himself replaced by Suresh Raina after he could not clear the yo-yo test.

As far as Shubman Gill is concerned, he was in the scheme of things and is in the waiting list. Chief selector MSK Prasad had talked about Gill after the squad announcement.

Also, there was no spot left as India recalled Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey. None of the regular batsmen took a rest and hence, there was no place for Gill. He will definitely be in the squad in the home season when few of the regulars will take rest. Shubman Gill. Getty Images.

He will remain in West Indies as Gill is a part of India A squad for the unofficial Tests against the hosts. He recently shone in the one-day series that India A won 4-1.

India tour of West Indies kicks off next month with Florida hosting he first two T20Is of the series. The action will return to Caribbean islands when Guyana will host 3rd T20I and 1st ODI of the series.
Later, India will play two more ODIs and two Test matches against the hosts.

West Indes have also announced their squad for the USA leg of the series. Carlos Brathwaite will take over the captaincy back in the shortest format of the game.

Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard made their comebacks to the T20I side. There was no Chris Gayle in the side as he has opted to play Global T20 Canada.

Speculations are high regarding MS Dhoni hanging his boosts after featuring in the recently-held ICC World Cup 2019 in the United Kingdom (UK).

The veteran cricketer Dhoni has recently made himself unavailable for the Windies tour. However, the recent reports maintained that Virat Kohli had requested Dhoni to defer his retirement.

Also, it suggested that Dhoni might continue till the 2020 T20 World Cup scheduled in November in Australia.

Recently, many thought ‘Mahi’ is mulling over retiring after the twelfth edition of the World Cup.

The right-handed batsman had amassed 273 runs in eight innings at an average of 45.50.

In the recent past, Mahi had struggled in the middle-order. The slow-starter had managed to score runs at the World Cup which included a fine half-century in the semis against New Zealand at the Old Trafford in Manchester.

MSD changed his mind: MS Dhoni (Image Credit: Google)

Recently, the chief of selectors MSK Prasad had maintained that they’re looking at young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant.

To talk about the perception, many felt that it is the time for Dhoni to bid adieu to farewell. Dhoni had three ICC titles under his belt since 2007 T20 World Cup.

Also, the sources revealed that Dhoni had changed his mind after having a conversation with Kohli.

In the recent past, Kohli had backed Dhoni while asserting the veteran’s presence in the team had benefitted Team India.

“It was only after Virat (Kohli) advised Dhoni not to quit immediately that the latter changed his mind,” a statement quoted a source close to Kohli.

The main idea has been to groom to Pant during the Windies tour. Also, Dhoni had given his inputs to Delhi-based batsman.

Furthermore, the report revealed that Kohli believes Dhoni is fit. It further added Dhoni could make an entry in the Team India if Pant suffers any injury.

“Virat feels that Dhoni has no fitness issues and can continue till the T20 World Cup next year if required by the team. The logic is that while grooming Pant, the Indian think-tank does not want any other wicketkeeper in the team. And, if Pant suffers any injury or loss of form during this time, then Dhoni can easily come in without any issues,” the source concluded.

The 38-year-old Ranchi-star had played 350 ODIs, 90 Tests and 98 T20Is since 2004.

Apart from Kohli, the other Indian batsmen who have previously officially been ranked No. 1 in Test cricket are Sachin Tendulkar, Rahu Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, and Dilip Vengsarkar. He is even ahead of Gavaskar on the all-time tally of points with 934, 14th overall in the list in just 67 Tests.

If Kohli delivers a performance similar to the one in Edgbaston in the second Test at Lord’s, then he can break into the top-10 by going ahead of Matthew Hayden, Kallis and AB de Villiers. All those players have highest points tally was 935 each. Donald Bradman (961) and Steve Smith (947) are the two batsmen sitting on top of this exclusive list.

Anil Kumble, the ICC’s technical committee chairman, is a board member of the advisory committee of Euro T20 Slam. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has no idea about Kumble’s role in this league.

The Euro T20 Slam 2019 will be the inaugural edition of this tournament that will run from 30th August to 22nd September. Ireland (Cricket Ireland), Scotland (Cricket Scotland) and the Netherlands (Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond) national cricket boards have combinedly set up this T20 league.

The ICC has already set up a group to monitor the global unstructured T20 leagues. However, the ICC has no clue about Anil Kumble’s joining in the Euro T20 Slam. Since 2012, the former Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble is the chairman of ICC’s technical committee.

While some believe that Kumble has followed the necessary protocols, but the ICC has ultimately no idea about this.

As per the report of Times of India, a source claimed, “He [Kumble] may have followed the necessary protocols for all you know. But the thing is, the events
monitoring group could’ve certainly benefitted from the intelligence. They didn’t have an idea.”

The TOI report further added that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also has no idea about this league.

Anil Kumble recently praised the global T20 leagues Anil Kumble (Image Credit: Google)

Recently, Anil Kumble has lauded the T20 leagues and wished to see more Indians like Yuvraj Singh in the foreign T20 leagues. The ICC has likely noticed Kumble’s those comments.

ICC wants to know some crucial answers

The ICC desperately wants to know the answers of two big questions – who are the investors and who are earning from these leagues.

An experienced ICC member claimed, “Honestly, if something is not done about it, this could turn out to be pandemic in multiple ways. Nobody who is in charge of running these so-called systems in place has an idea of who is behind the inception of these properties.

“And it all boils down to two questions that nobody has answers. First, who is putting money into these leagues? Second, who is earning from these leagues? There’s no answer to both these questions and that’s what is dangerous.”

Recently, on 19th July, the Euro T20 Slam organisers organised a players’ draft in London. Around 700 players from 22 countries participated in this players’ draft. Many big names have joined in this league as the players or coaches. Former South African cricketers Herschelle Gibbs and Lance Klusener, and the former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori will play the head coach roles in this league.

In the first edition of this league, six teams will participate. These teams are Dublin Chiefs, Belfast Titans, Edinburgh Rocks, Glasgow Giants, Amsterdam Knights and Rotterdam Rhinos.

India’s veteran cricketer Harbhajan Singh has hailed the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) following the successful launch of Chandrayaan-2 on its second Lunar Mission on Monday (July 22). Overall, his latest tweet had witnessed a mixed response on social media.

The debate on social media had witnessed referring Harbhajan’s tweet as utter ‘bigotry’ whereas some have thrown defended the Punjab-based star for his tweet.

The 39-year-old off-spinner Harbhajan has lauded ISRO for its mission to the moon.

In his tweet, Harbhajan had maintained that some countries have the moon on their flags, whereas, some have their flags on the moon.

Besides, Harbhajan had listed as many as nine countries in the first line by maintaining that these countries have moons embossed on their flags. It includes Pakistan, Maldives, Malaysia, Libya, Tunisia, Mauritania, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Algeria.

Harbhajan Singh also drew flak for his latest tweet: Photo Credit: AFP.

The ‘Turbanator’ also added that the United States of America (USA), India, Russia and China had their successful campaign on the moon.

In one of the responses, activist Kavita Krishnan had deemed Harbhajan’s tweet as a ‘bigoted story’. She had also posted a Nepal flag by adding it subsequently bears crescent moon.

Kavita stressed that Harbhajan should learn from Sri Lankan cricketers.

“May I disturb this bigoted story of yours with some reality? This is the Nepal flag, also with the crescent moon on it. Literally ‘flagging’ all ‘Muslim’ countries, is the essence of Islamophobic baiting & profiling. Wish you should learn from Sri Lankan cricketers & rise above this,” Kavita tweeted.

Also, Shehla Rashid, who is the General Secretary for newly-formed Jammu and Kashmir’s People’s Movement (JKPM), had retweeted a comment. The JKPM political party came into being in March 2019.

Also, Shehla had retweeted comments which had questioned Harbhajan.

However, it is not new; the same tweet has been doing rounds on the internet in the past.

Since 1998, Harbhajan had featured in 236 ODIs, 103 Tests and 28 T20Is.

Here’s how they had responded over Harbhajan Singh’s  tweet over Chandrayaan-2’s Success:

Take it easy and don’t forget to apply this. pic.twitter.com/GuIZ1Ud7jJ

— Krishnakumar (@krishna_k82) July 23, 2019

What a shame, open bigotry. Reaching moon is not the best indicator for development. Some countries with moon on their flags are much ahead on HDI than others who have flags on moon.
During a proud national moment, you must add a communal angle, no? Pathetic

— Jaini /উজ্জয়িনী/ اجینی (@IchbinUjjaini) July 23, 2019

Harbhajan Singh just needs to stick to cricket and nothing else. #DumbFuck

— Anees Hackim (@AneesHackim) July 23, 2019

Madam ji- Aap ko bigotry kahan nazar aa gayi ?
just saw your profile and got my answer. you are a communist. Enemy of humanity.

— Colonel Ajit Singh Bhinder (@ajitbhinder) July 23, 2019

I think this statement of @harbhajan_singh shows the sheer deprivation in his thoughts and a rising bigot.

— Shahana Munazir شاہانہ (@MunazirS) July 23, 2019

Tell me who designed India's flag ? When you talk about other country flag ? @abs261

— Ram (@RamShanbhoge) July 23, 2019

Congrats & our flag will also be on moon very very soon

— Zoraiz Aftab (@ZoraizAftab2) July 22, 2019

Congrats & our flag will also be on moon very very soon

— Zoraiz Aftab (@ZoraizAftab2) July 22, 2019

New India. Where we celebrate our achievements by mocking others. What a shame. How easily Indians can spoil a happy cheerful mood in a second!!

— एकता (@UnityZstrength) July 23, 2019

Shame on you @harbhajan_singh .

Your Tweet is in bad taste and shows Indians in a bad light.

You are not a True Sportsman.
You are a Communal Person

I hope @bcci takes action against
You for your Communal Tweet and stops yours Pension .

Shame on You.

— Ashish Joshi (@acjoshi) July 22, 2019

Was this supposed to be funny? https://t.co/ZoAe12KPQz

— Umar. (@Umar__A7) July 23, 2019

Hmmm I wonder what all these countries have in common? Makes you think what the real message is here…think it starts with 'b' and ends in 'igotry'? https://t.co/wEKJ4kBsyy

— Mudassir (@mudassir_05) July 23, 2019

In conclusion, it is a remarkable achievement for India in space.

Later, he scored 8* in the Super Over which also had a tie result. Finally, England won that match on the boundary countback rule.

Later, Stokes’ name entered the nomination for the upcoming New Zealander of the Year award.

Stokes reveals why he is not the right person for this award

Ben Stokes feels flattered on this nomination. However, he thinks that he is not the right person to win this trophy as he helped England to win this trophy.

Stokes’ management firm has recently released a statement where the all-rounder claimed, “I am flattered to be nominated for New Zealander of the Year. I am proud of my New Zealand and Maori heritage but it would not sit right with me to be nominated for this prestigious award. There are people who deserve this recognition more and have done a lot more for the country of New Zealand.

“I have helped England lift a World Cup and my life is firmly established in the UK – it has been since I was 12-years old.”

Ben Stokes believes Kane Williamson should achieve this award

Ben Stokes feels that the New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is the right member to win this award. Stokes called Williamson a “Kiwi legend”.

Stokes further added, “He would be a worthy recipient of this accolade. New Zealand, fully support him. He deserves it and gets my vote.”

Kane Williamson’s 578 runs in 2019 CWC is the most runs for a captain in a CWC season.

The all-time legendary Lasith Malinga called curtains on his ODI cricketing career. He is all set to bid adieu to the ODI format of the game after playing the first ODI game against Bangladesh back home. However, the good news is that he would continue in the shortest format of the game.

Team skipper Dimuth Karunaratne confirmed the same on Monday to reporters. All the 3 ODIs will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on July 26, 28 and 31. Even though Malinga was named in the squad for the 3 games, Karunaratne said that the bowler had told him that he would only be playing the first match.

Lasith Malinga is retiring – Dimuth Karunaratne

Speaking at the team’s press conference in the Sri Lankan capital, Karunaratne confirmed the 36-year-old fast bowler and the former captain would only appear in the first game. Malinga was named to the 22-man Sri Lanka squad for the series.

Twitter

“He is going to play the first match. After that he is retiring. That’s what he said to me. I don’t know what he said for the selectors but for me he said he is playing only one match,” said Karunaratne.

He will leave as Sri Lanka’s third-highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket with 335 wickets in 219 innings so far. Only Muttiah Muralitharan (523) and Chaminda Vaas (399) have taken more wickets than Malinga in ODIs for Sri Lanka.

Since his 2004 debut against the United Arab Emirates, Malinga has played 225 ODIs and his unusual Slingy action and an ability to bowl yorkers have made him a formidable bowler in limited-overs cricket.

Perhaps, Lasith Malinga is eyeing to play the T20 format of the game across the globe. He would likely to retire from the T20 International Cricket after the conclusion of upcoming ICC T20I World Cup 2020.
